Well, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since.

Birth of a CountyOn February 4, 1836,

both the House and Sen-ate passed a bill to form the county from western

Bartholomew, eastern Monroe, and northern

Jackson counties.

What’s in a Name?Brown County was

named for Gen. Jacob Brown, who defeated

the British at the Battle of Sackett’s Harbor in the

War of 1812.

Old LogsNashville was originally known

as Jacksonburg and Banner C. Brummett was appointed

County Agent in 1836 to lay out Nashville in lots to be sold at auction. You can still see his

cabin in town today.

There’s nothing wrong with a little wining

By Tom Lotshaw

For close to a century, Brown County has been known as an arts colony — a rural haven for

painters, potters, jewelers, sculptors and other artisans to connect with na-ture and draw on it for inspiration. Over the past three decades, wine-makers have been giving people an equally artistic reason to visit the area. “There were nine wineries in Indi-ana back when we went into business in 1986,” said Cynthia Schrodt, who owns and operates Brown County Winery in Gnaw Bone with her husband, David. “Now there are 55 wineries that are licensed, and we heard last week there’s maybe a couple more opening this month and 10 more by the end of the summer,” she said. Brown County Winery will celebrate 25 years in business with a special one-day party in the works for Saturday, July 30. The award-winning winery has grown from a one-man operation in a home garage into a full-fledged winery that makes about 35,000 gallons of wine a year. The business also maintains a retail outlet in downtown Nashville. Brown County Winery’s impressive growth tracks a statewide trend of more and more people starting wineries and finding success. “There’s a handful that are our size or bigger. Then there’s a ton that are quite small,” said David Schrodt. Schrodt got his start in 1982 as a vineyard manager and winemaker at Oliver Winery in Bloomington, the state’s oldest and largest winery. “When we started in the 1980s, no-body took Midwestern wines serious-ly. It was a really hard sell, no matter what the wine quality was. I think the wines are much better received now,” he said. Nashville’s other wine outlet, Cha-teau Thomas Winery, likewise has grown over the past three decades. “We make 40 to 50 different kinds of wines a year. You might say I’ve

Page 21: 2011 Brown County Summer Almanack

Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide • Summer 2011 21

never met a grape I didn’t like,” said Dr. Charles Thomas. Thomas founded the winery in 1984 in the south side of Indianapolis, open-ing a satellite retail outlet in Nashville in the 1990s. “There are just a lot more people out there who have always wanted to do something artistically, and have decid-ed to do it. A significant percentage of them have made their money in other fields and taken that money and started a winery,” Thomas said. “You see the same thing in Cali-fornia. There are all kinds of oil men and doctors and so on who have retired and started a winery. It’s not only the draw and romance of having a winery, it’s the challenge of trying to make a profit.” Given the area’s natural charm and slower pace of life, Thomas said he’s surprised there aren’t more wineries in Brown County. “Brown County and Nashville in particular are places where there’s a lot of charm and romance, nostalgia, and people wanting to go down and enjoy something and not worry about the cares of the world,” he said. But every year in April, the county does get a lot more wineries visiting for the Indiana Wine Fair in Story, about 13 miles south of Nashville. This year was the ninth year for the festival — now the largest event in the state featuring only Indiana wines. “If there is a center of the Indiana wine region, it would be right where we are,” said Rick Hofstetter, owner of

the Story Inn and founder of the Indi-ana Wine Fair. He dreamed up the festival about 10 years ago, over a glass of wine. “About 70 percent of the wineries in the state are within 50 miles of Story, all the way down to Madison, as the crow flies. You end up with a region that has probably 28 or so wineries,” Hofstetter said. The festival draws wineries from all over the state. Last year close to 5,000 people came out to sample and buy wines. “Our rooms are booked through 2013,” Hofstetter said. The local wineries are operating at the top of their game, he said. “They’re making world-class wines. They’re tru-ly good wineries. I don’t think Califor-nia has a big edge over us. They used to, but not anymore.” And for the rest of the year, all of the

With so much to offer and so much surrounding it, Brown County makes a perfect destination for the wine lover. “It’s a wonderful, bright future, and it’s just beginning,” Hofstetter said.

Gifts of BeautyBy Megan O’Bryan

At the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, two of Brown County’s most valuable assets come to-

gether: nature and art. Nestled in 211 acres of Brown Coun-ty landscape, the former homestead of famed Indiana artist T.C. Steele and his wife Selma offers visitors a window to the beginnings of Brown County’s arts tradition. The Steeles bought the property in 1907. There, they constructed their home, The House of the Singing Winds. A year later, additions doubled the size of the house. Over time, a pair of studio buildings, a garage, guest cot-tages and other outbuildings – includ-ing a small number of remote painting shacks – joined the original home on the property. The couple surrounded the house with elaborate gardens, planted trees and developed trails that remain in place today. Even before it became a state prop-erty, the Steeles’ homestead was a pop-ular draw for visitors hoping to meet Steele or experience the vistas show-cased in his art. Selma kept the property open to visi-tors after her husband’s death in 1926. Shortly before her own death in 1945, she donated the estate and a number of artifacts and paintings to the state, with the intent that it become a place of edu-cation and enjoyment for the public. Today, visitors can take guided tours of The House of the Singing Winds and

the Steeles’ Large Studio. They offer not only the opportunity to experience Steele’s work, but a taste of Indiana’s art history and a view of the life the couple led there. Guests are welcome to wander the gardens and follow five hiking trails across the property. Many of the vistas portrayed in Steele’s art are still recog-nizable today. Outside of regular tours, special pro-grams and seasonal events are hosted at the site throughout the year. Additionally, the 92-acre Selma Steele Nature Preserve gives guests an opportunity to view rare and endan-gered plant species.

Megan O’Bryan is a reporter for the Brown County Democrat, the county’s only newspaper and publisher of the Brown County Democrat.

Enjoy Brown without a lot of GreenBy Barney Quick

Brown County’s obvious attractions are far from its only reasons to visit. Its hills and hollers are replete with

inexpensive, unexpected and less-noticed forms of fun. For instance, for a $4 pan-rental fee, you can be a gold prospector. A creek runs be-hind the Gatesville Country Store at 4525 Salt Creek Road and, according to proprietor Robin Stevens, it’s an inexhaustible source of the precious metal. “Every time we get a rain, it’s always fresh,” she says. The arrangement is informal, like everything at this classic gen-eral store. You rent a pan and head down to the creek bed. No permits are needed for ac-cess, since it’s private property. The store itself is brimming with charm: a retail area with an accent on fishing and hunting accessories, a down-home dining area, and a steady stream of regulars and neighbors. A great way to combine two of the county’s main charms, nature and history, is to visit The House at Stone Head. The Stone Head, a distance-marking statue erected in 1851 at the junction of Bellsville Pike and State Road 135, figures prominently in the area’s lore. While the house behind it is now a bed and breakfast, the gardens, trail and nature preserve compris-ing most of the property are available for all to enjoy as a casual stop on a day of wandering. Photographer Susan Showalter’s 105-acre Goat Hill Farm at 2900 Shepherd Road is a source of inspiration to artists and hikers around the region. While the Handmade in Brown County Gallery and her studio are the first things one sees there, a visitor can spend hours exploring the woods beyond. Contact her at 988-7830 to arrange for an especially delightful day in the less-traveled parts of the area.

If you prefer an adrenaline rush with your nature experience, there is the system of moun-tain biking trails in Brown County State Park. The price of park admission ($5 for in-state vehicles, $7 for out-of-state vehicles) is all that’s required to avail oneself of the switch-backs and narrow passages of a trail network that the March 2009 issue of Bike magazine deemed one of North America’s 33 best. Stop by www.browncountymountainbiking.com and watch the mounted-camera video of the descent from Hesitation Point to the valley below at breakneck speed for a sample of the thrills in store. It’s not every unincorporated town that boasts a combination coffee shop and gallery specializing in African art, but such is the case with Helmsburg, home of the FigTree. One can even take in entertainment, from community radio theater to performances of the FigTree Fellowship Players to string bands and singer-songwriters, at various times. Owners Glen and Thomi Elmore developed a love of certain African cultures during trips to that continent, and have made a point of providing a venue for the works of painters and sculptors they have befriended. The gallery also hosts exhibits by American artists working in various media. In the customary Brown County fashion, the El-mores have seen to it that just relaxing with a cup of brew and a pastry and wide-ranging conversation with regular patrons is a special experience. For details on the FigTree’s cur-rent offerings, visit www.figtreegallery.com. Helmsburg is also the site of a heartwarm-ing testimony to the entrepreneurial spirit, For Bare Feet. In the mid-1980s, fifth-grade teach-er Sharon Rivenbark bought a sewing machine and set up shop in tiny quarters in Nashville’s Antique Alley to make socks. Since the late 1990s, her now-nationwide operation, which has licensing agreements with several profes-sional and college sports leagues, has been

situated on State Road 45, in a facility hum-ming with production, shipping and market-ing activities. The company offers tours by appointment. The cost is $4 for children and $7 for adults. For more information, consult www.forbarefeet.com. Another Brown County comfort-food-and-coffee establishment with free music in an in-timate setting is the Muddy Boots Café at 136 N. Van Buren St. in Nashville. Most of the acts appear on a regular basis and have developed followings. Try a few and see which combi-nation of players and audience has the vibe that suits you. The music happens six nights a week. In addition, Tuesdays are craft nights. The staff boasts several artists whose works are on display there. For more a calendar, menu and more, go to www.muddybootscafe.com. On the second Saturday evening of each month from now through December, the Art Alliance of Brown County hosts an Art Walk through Nashville. As is the usual case in this area, food is involved as well. Eleven galler-ies and nine restaurants participate. The res-taurants offer discounts on the evenings of the walk as well as the next day. The galler-ies stay open until 8 p.m. and often offer re-freshments and music. Media exhibited on the walk include paintings, pen and ink drawings, sculpture and jewelry. For participating ven-ues and a map of the walk, visit www.artal-liancebrowncounty.com. While major events and places attract throngs of tourists each year who are willing to spend some money for special experiences, a bit of wandering around reveals to a curious visitor that Brown County’s main charms are its simplest and least costly.
