2011 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Fulton County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism (FCCC&T) is pleased to announce the 2011 Chamber Board of Directors. The Chamber elects new leadership each December, with the term year running annually from January 1st to December 31. The Fulton County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Board is made up of selected members of the community, who volunteer their time and resources to support and promote our local county. The board of directors, executive committee and community liaisons attend monthly meetings, provide direction for Chamber staff, volunteers, coordinate community activities, implement policies and procedures and manage the finances of the Chamber. The FCCC&T also works to promote the interests of over 120 member businesses and individuals by helping them connect with prospective customers, promote products and services, succeed in business through increasing sales, saving money, and becoming leaders in the Fulton County community.

We are very pleased to have such an accomplished group of individuals, in such a diverse group of industries, representing the Fulton County business community. We are enthusiastic about the contributions they will make to the future direction of the Chamber, and their willingness to lead in the promotion and growth of business in Fulton County.

Each board member serves a three-year term. If any position is vacated during the term of service the seated board members are charged with appointing a member to fill that position. A Director so elected to fill a vacancy shall serve for the unexpired term of his or her predecessor in office or for the newly created term. Board meetings are currently held the second Tuesday of every month.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we step into this new decade together may we be

strong. Faced with a world of uncertainty and many challenges

we continue to move forward.

This year Fulton County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism

celebrates 60 years of service to our beloved Fulton County.

Grateful are we for all who have helped pave the way. Equally

grateful are we for those who are and will help shape the

way. May the challenges that lay ahead open many windows and

doors of opportunity.

As we move forward together throughout each day may we be

reminded of our most important asset. That asset being the

combined strength of each of us who make up over 600

businesses operating in Fulton County.

As we advance forward we focus upon membership growth and

greater serving the needs of all our members and businesses.

Please join together with us as we seek innovative ways of

stimulating the Fulton County economy. Ideas and suggestions

for moving our county forward are greatly encouraged and

welcomed.

Thank you for being an important voice in our County and

may we truly work together in making Fulton County an even

greater place to live and work.

Appreciatively

Dwight Washabaugh

The Mercersburg Veterinary Clinic, Inc. was established in 1983 by Dr.’s David A. Burrows

and Roger A. Horst as Burrows and Horst Veterinary Services on Oakwood Drive, Mercersburg, PA. The practice was mainly a bovine practice specializing in Dairy Production Medicine. The practice operated out of Dr. Burrows’ home for 14 years before moving to 218 North Main Street in October of 1997. Because of this move, the practice began offering more services for companion animals. This resulted in a period of rapid growth and increase in support staff. It was at this time that the practice changed its name to the Mercersburg Veterinary Clinic. On December 31, 1999, Dr. Burrows retired from practice. Dr. Horst took over the practice and operated as a sole practitioner for 2 years. In January 1, 2002, the practice became an S-corporation hence the current name Mercersburg Veterinary Clinic, Inc.

Did You Know? A few facts about The Alleghenies

Over 50 million pretzels are made daily at Benzel’s Pretzels in Altoona.

The Juniata River is known as the best trout fishing stream in Pennsylvania.

The Lower Trail runs from Williamsburg to Water Street and is the only Pennsylvania Rails-to-Trails, now a 16.5 mile recreational trail, where you can travel the progress from Indian path from canal channel to railroad corridor.

Each year, after finishing years of studying, tests & nightlife at Penn State, hundreds of seniors hike Mount

Nittany as their final task as a Nittany Lion.

The Berkey Creamery, at Penn State University Park, is the largest university-run creamery in the country.

In the early days, The Alleghenies were labeled "Allegheny” by the French & “Allegany” by the English.

The Juniata River Valley is made up of two counties, Juniata & Mifflin.

Raystown Dam is operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a flood control dam protecting populated areas from flooding from Huntingdon, Pennsylvania to the mouth of the Susquehanna River as it flows into the Chesapeake Bay.

Youth Program Celebrates Business

Thirty-two years ago the business community in our state decided to take the bull by the horns. In 1979 a marvelously innovative program was born to teach our young people (juniors and seniors in high school) about those issues that face business people every day. Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW), internationally acclaimed for its excellence, now annually graduates more than 1,400 students with a vastly improved understanding about free market economics and how economic opportunity is so integrally tied to personal freedom.

Each summer, PFEW holds four, one-week individual sessions in July and August. The focus of the week is to group the participants (strangers at first) into “management teams” of senior executives who have inherited imaginary “companies.” These teams, under the guiding hands of “executives-on-loan” called Company Advisors, operate their firms for a computer simulated three-year period of time. To add a sense of reality, they are competing against two other student “companies” manufacturing and distributing the same product. These fledgling corporate executives are faced with decisions that any real-life business person confronts daily. They work with balance sheets, statements of income, market share surveys, etc., etc., and must also react to a variety of external factors as well. Oil embargos, inflation, union strikes, are but a few of the “unknowns” that these young entrepreneurs must deal with as they operate their businesses. Sound familiar?

PFEW is designed to give every participant, in broad brush strokes, an idea of what is germane and pertinent to the business world of today. Each day’s activities include four to five presentations from world-class business people from a list that reads like who’s who in Pennsylvania. The students hear about: Business and Finance, The Role and Relationship of Business and Government, Taxation, Business Ethics, Labor Relations, and much, much more.

The Chamber is proud to support PFEW to give our local students an eye-opening experience like none they have had. We encourage our local companies and civic organizations to provide sponsorships for our students and, if possible, volunteers for the sessions. (PFEW is completely a product of the private sector.) Every student attends PFEW on a fully tax-deductible $525 scholarship (the actual value of the scholarship exceeds $1,500) which is provided by a local firm. All scholarship providers are recognized and thanked in a variety of ways for their sponsorship and each student wears the name of their sponsor throughout the week. Each graduate also corresponds with his or her sponsor following graduation to report on the program and what they learned. PFEW is also an approved organization through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

If you would like to learn more about this award-winning program and how you can help, you can visit their website at www.pfew.org or contact John Trombetta, president of the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education at (814) 833-9576 ext. 106 or e-mail him at [email protected]. PFEW is open to all current sophomores and juniors in Pennsylvania and information on attendance as well as program applications can also be found on the website. Thank you for your support!
