As an artistic medium, photography is a great way to express yourself. Photographers try to depict

something they’ve seen or imagined in a unique an interesting way. Most of them, however, will

see something pretty and record it on film or a sensor without even thinking of improving what they

see in the frame. But what is that extra something that makes photographs truly remarkable and

make the viewer take notice? Are the exotic locations and the strange people you visited? Is it the

vibrant colours? Spectacular scenery can carry the image, but it’s not enough. In order to create

a compelling image you need more. In this workshop, Yannis demonstrates certain design and art

direction techiniques and assigns excercises that help students discover what it truy takes to make

an image you can be proud of.

2. Location Description

The historic Venetian town of Hania & Western Crete & its landscapes, culture & peoplesThe city or Heraclion, Knossos. Several noteworthy villages and areas inside the Island.

Crete

Called by the Greeks themselves ‘The Great Island’, Crete is a remarkably special place, an area of outstanding natural beauty, imbued with a strong sense of history. Western Crete is able to astound the photographer even more than other parts of the island. Chania, the ar-ea’s capital, has the most picturesque harbour in Greece, backed by a labyrinth of Venetian and Turkish alleyways winding down to the waterfront. There are Minoan remains, Turkish mosques and minarets, and at every turn, fascinating glimpses of the city’s 16th century walls, impressive ramparts, bastions, archways, and domes.

The capital of the Chania Province, our “base camp” city will amaze the photographermore than other parts of the island. Chania Town, with its labyrinth of Venetian and Turkish alleyways, has the most picturesque harbour in Greece.

Join photographer, art director and native Greek Yannis Souris and explore the many hidden facets of this fascinating area. From Minoan burial chambers, to a carpet weaver at work on his 400 years old family loom. Glimpse some of the traditional villages untouched by time, surrounded by the rugged White Mountains, wander around quaint mediaeval backstreets and alleyways.
