A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
On behalf of the Edmonton Jazz Festival Society, I would like to welcome you to the 2011 Edmonton International Jazz Festival. The lineup for this year’s festival is as strong and diverse as ever. 2011 brings 10 days of jazz presenting over 200 musicians from around the world at 8 venues, ranging from free outdoor events to the Winspear stage. We are pleased to welcome back both the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis, as well as Madeleine Peyroux. The return of both of these great artists is a credit to all involved as the Edmonton International Jazz Festival is securely back on the international jazz map as one of the best!
New this year is the addition of 12 shows within walking distance of the Yardbird Suite at the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre. This new Cabaret Series has been added to the list of shows you can also gain access to with a $99 Johnny Jazz Pass. In 2011, there are a total of 37 shows accessible with this pass; that’s less than $3 per show!
Also new this year, 6 exciting free lunch hour concerts being presented in our ‘Works With Jazz’ series in Sir Winston Churchill Square, a new collaboration presented in part by The Works Art and Design Festival.
Great efforts from many people contribute to the creation and delivery of this annual festival. On behalf of the entire festival board of directors, staff, crew and volunteers, we hope your experience with the 2011 Edmonton International Jazz Festival is a GREAT one.

The Edmonton Jazz Festival Society (EJFS) is dedicated to connecting regional audiences with provincial, national and international jazz artists. By providing professional and supportive environments, musicians from across the globe are able to perform, collaborate, and celebrate jazz music with the people of Edmonton.
Since 2005, the EJFS has presented and promoted initiatives such as the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, Edmonton Jazz Orchestra and the Jazzworks Educational Outreach Program to support the jazz tradition in Edmonton.

jazz, avant-garde incorporates ensembles with more
of an arrangement. Soloists still explore freedom from
conventional rules. Sometimes difficult to tell where the

Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews’ Verve debut album, Backatown (Verve Forecast April 20), is the work of a rare artist who can draw both the unqualified respect of jazz legends and deliver a high-energy rock show capable of mesmerizing international rock stars and audiences alike. With such an unprecedented mix of rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul, he had to create his own name to describe his signature sound: Supafunkrock! Andrews is the kind of player who comes along maybe once in a generation, and Backatown is the latest, clearest proof that his artistry is as singular as his raw talent. The album title comes from the locals’ term for the area of New Orleans that includes the Tremé [pronounced Tre-MAY] neighborhood in the city’s 6th Ward, where Troy was born and raised—getting his nickname at four years old when he was observed by his older brother James marching in a street parade wielding a trombone twice as long as the kid was high. The cultural backdrop of the Tremé—the oldest black neighborhood in the U.S.—is at the very root of Troy’s music, on top of which he’s built his own sound. The streetwise, gritty feel of the term underscores the difference between the stereotype of the New Orleans jazz musician and what this audacious young artist and his cohorts are going for, and pulling off.

Award-winning performer Krystle Dos Santos is a soul and jazz singer-songwriter and definitely an artist to watch for. Dos Santos’ self-titled debut CD recently took home Urban Recording of the Year at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. Her unique blend of dance beats, funky grooves and soft, jazzy soul have inspired comparisons to modern Soulstresses Sade, Joss Stone and Jill Scott, as well as the jazz greats of the past suchas Etta James and Billie Holiday. With an eclectic live show sometimes combining electronic elements or a full live band, Dos Santos provides a performance not to be missed.

Curtis Macdonald is an alto saxophonist and composer based in New York City. He graduated cum laude from the New School University in 2007 where he immediately became faculty. Recently, he released his debut record, Community Immunity on Greenleaf Music. Growing up in Canada, Curtis began performing when he was nine years old. Eager to further refine his craft, he ventured to the Banff Centre for the Arts where he participated in several residencies alongside ongoing apprenticeships in New York City. Today he can be seen leading his ensemble, composed of world-class improvising musicians, throughout New York City’s most respected jazz and creative music venues.

Jack Semple is one of those rare guitar players who leaves a crowd speechless, one of those players who leaves a crowd in total astonishment, in absolute awe of what they have just experienced. Listening to and watching Jack play fills one with a sense of having witnessed an event in time, one not soon to be forgotten. Jack Semple is a guitar players guitar player. An absolute virtuoso of his art form, Jack plays with unparalleled feeling and total technical control. Now did I mention the man can sing? Jack has a set of pipes that are smooth as silk and as raw and jagged as rocks cutting through an ocean shoreline. His vocal talents alone are an event to behold. Semple has played from Vancouver to Montreux, has worked for CBC radio and TV, won a Juno award, and shared the stage with a wide range of top artists, from Martha Reeves to k.d. lang. He was the 1992 national winner of the Much Music “Guitar Wars”. If you can’t get to see him perform near you then I highly recommend getting a copy of his most recent CD release entitled “Tribute to Lightfoot”. Composer/pianist François Bourassa, 2007 Oscar Peterson Prize recipient (given by the Montréal International Jazz Festival) leads one of Canada’s most successful jazz ensembles with André Leroux (saxes), Guy Boisvert (bass), and Philippe Melanson (drums). Their latest recording in a catalogue of critically-acclaimed CD’s, Rasstones (Effendi), won the OPUS (Quebec) award. A previous recording (Live at the Top of the Senator) won Canada’s highest recording honor, the JUNO, and his Indefinite Time garnered him a FELIX, Quebec’s highest recording honor. Numerous tours have taken him all over the world, from festivals and concerts in Europe, to the US and Canada, Russia, India, China, Korea, Japan and Mexico.

Peter Bröetzmann (Germany, reeds) - the living legend of the European new jazz. He has exemplified European improvised music for over 40 years and participated in countless international collaborations. Recent projects include Die Like a Dog (with William Parker, Hamid Drake and Toshinori Kondo), his homage to Albert Ayler, the Chicago-based Bröetzmann Tentet and many more. His first album Machine Gun released in 1968 still represents the reference for the musicians and critics. Considering his 40-year career and more than 100 albums, but also many current projects, Bröetzmann is still one of the most influential figures of the new music.

Is this yet-another revisiting of Gershwin’s classic Porgy and Bess, immortalized by many greats? Not quite... Médéric Collignon, notoriously, is not one to follow the tracks of others. Known for his shouting, his deliberately trashy bouts and his flashes of genius, he has taken on this monument, without real irreverence, taking Miles Davis’s version as a starting point, but as we could expect, with some insolence. Backing him is a power trio (named Jus de Bocse in jest) which sounds like a big band. The result is disarming, and has attracted a lot of reactions. It is a kind of artificial, multicolored opera, dense and powerful.

Songstress Madeleine Peyroux is known to her fans for intimately arranged covers of the early American blues and jazz repertoire. She began as a teenage busker, honing her vocal and guitar skills on the famously quaint, acoustic streets of Europe, where she molded her style on the cornerstones of jazz: Billie Holiday,
Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. Amidst an oddly sparse recording career beginning in 1996, she is most known for her 2005 release ‘Careless Love’ (Rounder Records), produced by Larry Klein ( Joni
Mitchell, Herbie Hancock) who fused Peyroux’s personal and vulnerable take on more modern material, i.e., Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, cult legend Elliott Smith, with that of her beloved torch songs and early blues.
Peyroux took a turn into uncharted territory with her last album, ‘Bare Bones’, a collection of self-penned compositions and co-writes with heavy hitters such as Joe Henry and Steely Dan’s Walter Becker. She toured until mid
2010, including a triple bill with Diana Krall and Melody Gardot in Australia, and is now keeping behind the scenes in preparation for a return to the studio. Producer Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Joe Henry, Chocolate Genius, Norah Jones) is set to hold the reigns this time, and the album will be all new compositions. “I have been building on the relationships I developed in co-writing, and something new has taken hold of me,” Peyroux says. “This project is meant to be a wider dreamscape than previous recordings. I’m interested in exploring tougher sounds, even ugly sounds... trying to find something more raw than the voice that I have now, and in the accompaniment that I have become used to.”

Sophie Hunger was born in 1983 in Bern and spent a large part of her childhood in London and Bonn. In 2006, Hunger recorded her first demo in her living room, called it “Sketches On Sea” and sold several thousand copies. Hunger started sharing the stage with jazz greats such as Erik Truffaz, the industrial pioneers The Young Gods and the French vocal artist Camille. Her stage presence is ultimately what led to her breakthrough. “She’s Laura Marling, Beth Orton and Björk in one folk-rocking package” (The Guardian, UK), “breathtaking concert”(Musikexpress, DE), “excellent” (Le Monde, FR). The first studio album, “Monday’s Ghost”, was released in the spring of 2009, climbed to number one in the Swiss album charts and achieved gold status. In consequence, Hunger and her five-member band traveled all across Europe that year, where they played over 100 concerts.

She has played in Canada, United States and France. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO), comprising 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today, has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988. Featured in all aspects of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming, this remarkably versatile orchestra performs and leads educational events in New York, across the U.S. and around the globe; in concert halls; dance venues; jazz clubs; public parks; and with symphony orchestras; ballet troupes; local students; and an ever-expanding roster of guest artists.
Wynton Marsalis (Music Director, Trumpet) is the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Mr. Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12 and soon began playing in local bands of diverse genres. He entered The Juilliard School at age 17 and joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Mr. Marsalis made his recording debut as a leader in 1982, and has since recorded more than seven jazz and classical albums which have garnered him nine GRAMMY® Awards. In 1983, he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz GRAMMY®s in the same year; he repeated this feat in 1984. Mr. Marsalis’ rich body of compositions includes Sweet Release; Jazz: Six Syncopated Movements; Jump Start and Jazz; Citi Movement/Griot New York; At the Octoroon Balls; In This House, On This Morning; and Big Train. In 1997, Mr. Marsalis became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. In 1999, he released eight new recordings in his unprecedented Swinging into the 21st series, and premiered several new compositions, including the ballet Them Twos, for a 1999 collaboration with the New York City Ballet. Mr. Marsalis was instrumental in the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center, which raised over $3 million for the Higher Ground Relief Fund to benefit the musicians, music industry related enterprises, and other individuals and entities from the areas in Greater New Orleans who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina. He led the effort to construct Jazz at Lincoln Center’s new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall, opened in October 2004, the first education, performance, and broadcast facility devoted to jazz, which Mr. Marsalis co-founded in 1989.

Atomic was established in 2000 and already after their first two studio albums, Feet Music (2002) and Boom Boom (2003), both their growing audience and music reviewers alike began to perceive them as an original flavor with an entirely individual energy that few Scandinavian jazz groups could match. Even though initially thought of as a sort of rebellion to the quaintness of the “Scandinavian Sound” which had become exemplified by Norwegian artists on labels such as ECM, Atomic found themselves becoming a new sort of unique sound on their own. An explosive blend of American free-jazz with European characteristics is how some reviewers have described them. Or better yet, “part academic lecture, part a fun night out on the town” is how the band describes themselves, and is what makes their sound truly Atomic.

Gypsophilia’s danceable mash-up of gypsy jazz, klezmer, funk, indie and more is in full force on their 2-time East Coast Music Award-winning album Sa-ba-da-OW! (#1 for 2009 on national campus charts). The band has been busy touring festivals across Canada, recording music for film, and is just about to release its third record, produced by Montreal’s Howard Bilerman. Halifax-based Gypsophilia is a group of seven young performers whose music straddles the jazz and indie worlds. The band started in 2004 as a Django Reinhardt-inspired project, but soon found itself mixing gypsy jazz with klezmer, funk, classical music, indie rock, and bebop, writing its own tunes and playing to sold out crowds.

Since moving to Europe, Gary has given over 100 concerts and three, 15-city tours with his “Gary Guthman Quartet” and “The New Swing Orchestra” as well with Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras. For the last 10 years, Gary Guthman has been orchestrating, arranging and composing for symphony pops, television and radio, and is becoming recognized as one of the leading orchestrators for theater, stage and cabaret performers. Gary’s most recent creation was his highly acclaimed “Master&Margarita” written and orchestrated for Symphony Orchestra and performed by renowned Polish harpist Malgorzata Zalewska.

Mark began his career at age nine as a gifted classical pianist but by age fourteen had started a second career playing the drums. By the time he was 18, the drums eclipsed the piano as Mark’s voice for musical expression, and it wasn’t long before Mark was playing with fellow Canadian and jazz icon, Oscar Peterson. It wasn’t long before Mark’s reputation as a superb musician resulted in a constantly ringing telephone. Singer and pianist Andy Bey was the first to call. Bey describes Mark as ‘an intelligent, immensely talented young musician with a curious mind and a listening ear.’ The next call was from saxophonist Dewey Redman, and soon there were performances with Diana Krall, Joe Sample, Patti Austin, the Backstreet Boys, Quincy Jones…the list goes on.

One artist, two distinct but interwoven concepts: this is the captivating logic behind Double-Booked, pianist Robert Glasper’s third album for Blue Note, following up Canvas (2005) and In My Element (2007). An artist who “unfailingly gets the feeling right” (New York Magazine), Glasper has made waves throughout the music world as leader of both the acoustic Robert Glasper Trio and the electric, hip-hop-oriented Robert Glasper Experiment. With Double-Booked, the 32 year-old Houston native puts his enviable versatility front and center, emphasizing these different hemispheres of his musical brain at the same time. Career-wise, this creates a constant balancing act, and on occasion literally being double-booked, appearing with the Trio and the Experiment on the same night.

PJ Perry is considered to be Canada’s finest saxophonist. His intimate musical knowledge of the great 20th century composers, such as George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and Duke Ellington, delights pops audiences all over the world. PJ Perry has done it all. He has shared the spotlight with Michel LeGrand and Dizzy Gillespie. As lead saxophonist on the highly successful 1980’s TV series In Concert, PJ played for such luminaries as Ray Charles, Henry Mancini, Aretha Franklin, and Tom Jones. Recently, Mr. Perry was a featured soloist on the hit 2010 Broadway production of Come Fly Away, highlighting the songs of Frank Sinatra and the choreography of Twyla Tharpe. Mr. Perry currently makes his home in New York City.

Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is not yet 40. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to New York City to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, Bobby Watson. Since then, McBride’s list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he’s worked with the best of the very best - Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, Roy Haynes, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny. In the R&B world, he’s not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he’s extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he’s collaborated with the Roots, D’Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he’s worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet.

This “hot” band with a “Hot Mama” at the helm enjoys playing various styles from classic jazz, blues, big band sounds of the swing era, gospel, traditional,and dixieland jazz. They’ve made their niche performing in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Germany, Holland and all over the United States. Rollanda and her band played the Victoria Hot Jazz Festival for 3 years, the Calgary International Jazz Festival for 2 years. Rollanda has successfully put together the Edmonton International Jazz Festival’s “Opening Night Gala” for the last four years. Rollanda is surrounded by Edmonton and Calgary’s top musicians. They’ve recorded 3 CDs.

young jazz professionals and exceptional high school students.
Under the direction of Joel Gray and Kent Sangster, this summer outreach
program provides an inspired setting for collaboration, development and learning through mentorship. Selected performers from the 2011 Edmonton International Jazz Festival line-up have committed to share
their knowledge and experience by leading seminars on various topics including, but not limited to performance, composition, professionalism, and the business of music.
