Dakota County and the south-of-the-river area host some of best parks, attractions and com-munity festivals in Minnesota. Inside this guide, that we at Thisweek Newspapers call Com-

munity, are resource lists that we hope people will find informa-tive and will encourage them to experience all there is to offer in the area. We designed the guide to be

a resource for both visitors and local residents to help them find all the area’s hidden gems, along with those that are more well known. We hope readers will keep it next to their phone books and computers as it includes infor-mation about events, attractions and much more in the coming year.

For more information about the local communities, contact one of the chambers or visitors bureaus listed inside. For questions and comments about editorial or advertising content, contact Thisweek News-papers at 12190 County Road 11, Burnsville, MN 55337; (952) 894-1111, or [email protected].

BECOME IMMERSED IN THE SWEET COMFORT OF A SEMIRURAL VILLAGE

On the edge of the well-de-veloped and fast-paced sprawl-ing metro area lies what has become one of the region’s best-kept secrets: Farmington. It was once a small town serving area farmers. Farming-ton’s late-19th century roots shine through upon a single visit to its historic downtown in the southern end of the city. Visitors will find a slow-paced, classic grid layout peppered with friend-ly faces, plenty of mom-and-pop shops and pleasant parks. Old-fashioned Victorian homes and bungalows offer an idyllic way to live in the eminently walkable

older part of town. Farmington often feels like the rural small town of its incep-tion, but there is also a faster-paced, modern suburban side.

The city’s north end features many recreational and commer-cial amenities but also a newer, more diverse housing stock for those looking for something

more contemporary or larger than what is available near the historic downtown. Biking and walking trails abound, connecting both parts of this dichotomous town to its various parks, schools and retail centers. Rambling River Park, which is situated on the Vermil-lion River, is the hub of this vast network of trails. Farmington is also a commu-nity active in its schools. High school sports are among the centers of activity. At Farming-ton’s new high school residents can take in a football game on a chilly autumn night or an excit-ing basketball game during the long winter months. Whatever your inclination — serene small town vibes or quiet suburban neighorhoods — Farmington has much to offer in the way of a positive lifestyle ex-perience.

The Exchange Bank Building is a product of the Late Victorianperiod design vocabulary and shows the influence of the Romanesque and Italianate styles, according to the city’s Heritage Preservation Commission.

Over the past century, Lakev-ille has quietly made the transi-tion from farming village to bus-tling, 38-square-mile city that 55,000 people call home. But in the midst of major growth, Lakeville hasn’t lost its small-town appeal. The combi-nation of being a suburb and a small city allows Lakeville to of-fer an historic downtown featur-ing small boutiques and a classic five-and-dime store, as well as suburban amenities such as Su-perTarget and a Brunswick Zone XL party and bowling center. There are ample food op-tions for visitors and residents of Lakeville, from mainstream res-taurants, such as Applebee’s and

the Green Mill, to small, locally-owned shops like the Mainstreet Coffee Cafe, which offers wraps, sandwiches and salads. For those who look for a night on the town, the Lakeville Area Arts Center offers a wide variety of performing arts, and clubs such as Babe’s offer live music and stand-up comedy. To add to the ambiance, Mainstreet Coffee Cafe becomes a wine bar at night, serving the best of vint-ners the world over. Outdoor enthusiasts will en-joy taking advantage of Lakev-ille’s well-known and ample park space, which features biking and walking paths, beaches and sports amenities. Even an his-

toric World War II jet at the Vet-eran’s Memorial in Aronson Park. In addition to Lakeville’s his-toric downtown, the city boasts three other major retail areas

and a number of hotels. As the southern gateway to the Twin Cities, Lakeville offers a plethora of opportunities for a fulfilling life.

City Parks Farmington | Lakeville

FARMINGTON Farmington boasts 42 city parks throughout town with 786 acres of green space to enjoy. Evergreen Knoll Park, 626 Heri-tage Way, offers a swimming pool, volleyball, new state-of-the art playground equipment designed for toddler, preschool and school-aged children, large shelter, picnic tables and restrooms and running water. Rambling River Park, 17 Elm St., offers the city’s largest park with 58 acres of green space that includes tennis courts, a sand vol-leyball court, fishing in the Vermil-lion River, ice skating and warm-ing house, playground equipment, baseball and softball fields, and bike trails. North Creek Park, located at Upper 182nd Street and Dunbury Avenue, has a lighted hockey and ice rink, warming house and wooden area. Prairie Waterway Greenway, 821 13th St., offers 95.4 acres of walking and biking trails that are

ideal for rollerblading, fishing off a dock, and a large gazebo shel-ter with picnic tables that can be rented for parties and celebrations. Depot Ways Arts Park, located in the heart of downtown Farm-ington at County Highway 50 and Second Street, is an art sculpture park that is highly unusual for a city this size. The city designated

the public space located near the railroad tracks at the corner of Second Street and Highway 50 as an arts park in 2000 and today nu-merous sculptures and art pieces done by local students enhance a brick path that winds its way around flower gardens and shade trees. City park or shelter rental is

available from May 1 to Oct. 1. Picnic shelters can be reserved for family gatherings, company picnics, reunions and other group events. Drop off a completed res-ervation form with fee payment at City Hall, 430 Third St. For more information on Farm-ington city parks, call Farmington Parks and Recreation at (651) 280-6850 or log onto www.ci.farmington.mn.us.

Golf Courses Dakota County There are plenty of golf courses in the south metro, where golfers of all experience and proficiency levels can play. Courses range from holes with beginner and casual golfer dis-tances to championship flight de-signs. While this is not a comprehen-sive look at all area courses, it is a sampler that should provide a good starter kit. Those who are looking to get in a few swings and a little confi-dence booster can find it at cours-es such as the Apple Valley Golf Course, Birnamwood in Burnsville or Rich Valley Golf Course in Rose-mount. These courses offer nine-hole rounds that provide a neighbor-hood golf experience. The holes are forgiving, some-times, with their shorter distances or wide fairways. Because of this, the courses play host to a wide range of golfers from youngsters to seniors and everyone in be-tween. Birnamwood is a nine-hole, par-27 public golf course that is owned and operated by the city of Burnsville. Apple Valley Golf Course, which is privately owned, is a nine-hole executive-length golf course that can help those looking to play target golf. Rich Valley Golf Club is an 18-hole executive-length golf course in Rosemount and has an addi-tional nine-hole layout. The course has a few strategically placed trees, water and sand traps. It pro-vides a step up in challenge while still offering the executive length. Another short course is Cleary Lake Golf Course, part of the 1,045-acre Cleary Lake Regional Park, southwest of Burnsville in Scott County. It has a par-3 length, 9-hole golf course and driving range. Among the public diamonds in the rough in the area are South-ern Hills Golf Course in Farming-ton, Valleywood Golf Course in

Apple Valley, Parkview Golf Club in Eagan and Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings. Southern Hills is an 18-hole, par-71 course measuring longer than 6,300 yards and is billed as offering both fun and challenge for golfers of all skill levels. A creek that bisects the course comes into play on many of the holes. The terrain undulates, with the back portion of the course mostly on a raised section that makes for some blind shots. Valleywood is a championship 18-hole course with ponds, dog-legs and a healthy dose of woods. The course requires good man-agement, as the long ball is only sometimes rewarding. Fairway positioning is at a premium at Val-leywood. Parkview bills itself as the “First to Open, Last to Close” for two reasons. One is that the course often is the first to open in the spring and the last to close in the fall. The fully-public 18-hole course also earns the title because it is one of the few golf courses in the metro that host “Glow Golf.” The night rounds are played with a special ball that glows in the dark. The course features gentle hills and a wide variety of trees, 18 bunkers, a lake and pond. Emerald Greens is located just outside Rosemount’s eastern bor-der with Hastings. With 36 holes of champion-ship golf, Emerald Greens has flat and undulating sections. It has signature holes scattered through-out the course, such as the pond-protected par-3 and a hole with a postage stamp-shaped green. Golfers looking for the full country club feel need look no further than the south-of-the-river area. Boulder Pointe Golf Club in Elko New Market opened to the public in August 2002, and touts itself as having greens and turf conditions that compete with the best in the metro area.

Designed by golf course archi-tect Kevin Norby, this 18-hole, par 72 layout with multiple tees offers a unique challenge to golfers of all skill levels. It has 185 acres of roll-ing terrain, wooded areas, natural wetlands, and water hazards on 14 different holes. Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakev-ille features stately pines, pristine wetlands and is accentuated with seven ponds, which create chal-lenging water hazards. This 18-hole, par-71 course has three sets of tees ranging from 4,805 to 6,306 in yardage and of-fers gently rolling hills and natural reclaimed Minnesota wetlands to challenge all levels of golfers. Willinger’s Golf Club south of Elko New Market in Webster has daily-fee golf on 18-holes that tests golfers’ abilities in a scenic, natural environment. There is plenty of water, expan-sive bunkers and mature forest. The course measures 6,809 yards from the tournament tees. Four sets of tee boxes per hole enable golfers of all levels to enjoy the course. The Meadows at Mystic Lake, an 18-hole championship golf course, is billed as the Midwest’s most spectacular golf destination.

Golf Digest ranked it last year as one of the top 10 new courses in the country. Golfers experience bent grass fairways, tees and greens, 13 holes with water, 80 bunkers, 20 fountains and large greens. The Wilds Golf Course in Prior Lake, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, has 150-foot el-evation changes, water in play on nearly half of the holes, and more than 70 strategically placed bun-kers. Making the course playable for golfers of all levels, there are four tee boxes to choose from and gen-erously wide fairways. Legends Club in Prior Lake features a 30-acre lake, cascad-ing creeks, scenic wetlands, deep ponds and dramatic topography, Legends is more than a stun-ning 18-hole daily-fee golf course; the 7,046-yard, par-72 layout pro-vides a haven for native plants and wildlife. Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville is built on 180 acres of rolling hills with shining ponds and mature trees. This 18-hole championship course provides enjoyment for golfers of all abilities with five sets of tee markers. Heritage Links Golf Club in Lakeville is an 18-hole, par-71 championship golf course. The front nine has a links feel to it with water and rolling terrain, accord-ing to its Web site. The back nine is more wooded, lined with trees, water, bunkers and great elevation changes. The course has 45 bunkers, and water comes into play on 16 of 18 holes. Heritage Links has four dif-ferent sets of tees, ranging from 5,145 to 6,672 yards. Lost Spur Golf and Event Cen-ter, 2750 Sibley Memorial High-way, Eagan, has a nine-hole golf course, a new banquet facility for 250 guests, a practice facility, full-service golf shop, lounge with bar and snack service and professional lessons, clinics available.
