On September 11, we will reflect upon one of the most dramatic and tragic events in US history. Ten years ago, on that date, nearly 3000 Americans lost their lives in the cowardly attack on our nation by terrorists. Since that day, American and coalition forces have been fighting the War on Terror on many fronts and over 6000 brave men and women have given the ultimate sacrifice as they fought to keep America and other countries in the world free from those with evil agendas.

The 2011 Lee College Volleyball Team is dedicating this season to the victims of 9/11 and their families, to the courageous men and women in the US military and coalition forces that have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their lives for freedom.

Ten years ago, the student athletes on the 2011 Lady Rebels Volleyball roster were in elementary schools. Their innocence of childhood was compromised with the witnessing of tragedy, war and fear. These experiences have been a part of their development and have been an influence into the young women they have become. And now, as they enter into the portion of their lives where they can exert positive influence on others in the world, this next generation of leaders wants to do their part in helping to heal from the past and shape the future.

Coach Tracie Johnson Head Coach, Lady Rebels

Tracie Johnson, now entering her 24th year as the Lady Rebel’s head coach, heads the Lee College volleyball team. Coach Johnson joined Lee College in 1988 after a successful two-year stint coaching volleyball, basket-ball and track for the Sheldon Independent School District.

Coach Johnson graduated from Lee College in 1984 with an associate of arts degree, and then received a bachelor’s of arts degree in teaching (with an emphasis in physical edu-cation) from Sam Houston State University in 1986. Coach Johnson earned a master’s of science in physical education from Texas Southern University.

During her tenure at Lee College, Coach Johnson has increased the competitiveness of the program to a national level. Coach Johnson’s leadership has awarded the Lady Rebels six trips to the NJCAA National Tour-nament (1997,1999-2003).

Coach Johnson’s devotion to the Lady Reb-els has earned her an AVCA Regional Coach of the Year Award in 2001 and six NJCAA District Coach of the Year awards (1997, 1999-2003). Additionally, Coach Johnson has led the Lady Rebels to the Region XIV playoffs 20 times in her 23 years of coach-ing. Coach Johnson’s career record at Lee College is an impressive 579-309 (.652), the second highest win total among all active NJCAA coaches.

Hess spentoneyearas theDirectorofVolleyball Operations at California State University-Fresnoin2008.Inthatcapacity,shewasresponsibleforthe implementationofon-court trainingactivities andforvideo/statisticalanalysis.HessalsohasexperiencesastheassistantvolleyballcoachatFresnoCityCollege(2005)andasHeadGirlsandBoysVolleyballCoachatWawonaMiddleSchool(2006),bothlocatedinFresno.AtFresnoCityCollege, theteamwenttotheTop8 intheCaliforniaStateTournament.HessalsohascoachedUSAVolleyball teams at the juniors level with FresnoVolleyballClubfrom2004-2009andwithTexasEastsideVolleyballClub(2010).

As a devoted student, Hess earned her Bachelor’s De-gree in Kinesiology (option in Exercise Science) fromCaliforniaStateUniversity. Shecompletedhergradu-ateworkatCaliforniaStateUniversity-Fresno,earningaMaster’sDegreeinKinesiology(SportsAdministrationspecialization).

AtLeeCollege,Hessisinvolvedwithallaspectsofthevolleyball program, including recruiting, technical sup-port, scouting and game analysis, involvement withcamps, monitoring of the student-athletes’ academicprogress,conductingpracticesandhandlingadministra-tivetasks.HessalsoservesasakinesiologyinstructorwithGooseCreekCISD/LeeCollegeintheImpactEarlyCollegeHighSchoolatLeeCollege.

The Lady Rebels play in a state-of-the-art 26,000 squarefoot arena with seating to ac-commodate 1,500 raging Rebel fans. The facility features a 3,800 square foot wellness center, indoor walking track, VIP and conference room, concession areas, and locker rooms fit for visiting teams, official students and employees.

Lee College athletes and students can use the Wellness Center by joining classes that will help develop the body and strength they choose to have. The Wellness Center pro-vides a variety of weight lifting equipment as well as treadmills, stationary bikes and stepper machines.

Along with the Wellness Center, the Gymnasium has a complete weight lifting facility that will accommodate the needs of anyone who likes to use free weights.

SpoRTS aRena & wellneSS cenTeR

abouT The volleyball pRogRamSince 1977, the Lee College volleyball program has competed in the NJCAA, Division 1 level. During this time period, the program has devel-oped into one of the nation’s elite junior college programs.

Since 1988, Tracie Johnson has led the Lee Col-lege volleyball program and developed teams that compete for the Region XIV and NJCAA Na-tional championships, year in and year out. Coach Johnson’s program consistently seeks young women who excel on the court and in the class-room. Realizing that collegiate athletic success is no substitute for lifetime goals, the program at Lee College stresses the pursuit of academic suc-cess foremost. As a result, Lee College adminis-trators and faculty traditionally have recognized the volleyball program as consistently possessing one of the highest grade point averages among all scholarship groups on campus.

In 2010, the Lady Rebels finished their season with a respectable 6-4 conference record and an overall 16-13 record. Faced with a tough sched-ule, the team went 2-10 against nationally ranked schools. The most difficult foe the Lady Rebels lost to in the season that was not nationally ranked was Laredo Community College and the season’s final loss was to them in the first round of the Region XIV playoffs. The Lady Rebels finished 3rd place in both the conference and the region standings.

The home team is excited about their chances at success in 2011! With a stellar group of incom-ing freshman ready to join the four sophomores, Coach Johnson feels she has a well-rounded and fundamentally sound team that should prove to be worthy competition to any NJCAA school in the country.

Dr. Michael Murphy Lee College President

Dr. Michael Murphy became the 8th Pres-ident of Lee College on January 5, 2009. He served as President at College of Du-Page from which he retired as President Emeritus in 2004. Prior to serving in Illinois, Murphy was President at St. Louis Com-munity College in Missouri. He came to Lee College after serving as a consultant for the Association of Community College Trustees. For ACCT, he became an Interim President at three institutions over the last three years. He has also served as a fac-ulty member and dissertation advisor to graduate students at Walden University.

Murphy earned two Master’s degrees; one in Student Personnel and another in Business Administration. He received his Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from Indiana University. In addition, he also holds a Certificate in Educational Management from Harvard University.

Since coming to Lee College, Dr. Murphy has placed a high priority on learning about the college and the community, both of which he describes as among the most open and friendly he has ever ex-perienced.

Roy Champagne Athletic Director

Roy Champagne is entering his 3rd year as Athletic Director and his 19th season as the head basketball coach at Lee College. As Athletic Director, Champagne will help guide the athletic programs by bringing experience and innovativeness to the Lee College Athletic Department.

As head Basketball coach, Champagne has a career record of 161 - 197 (.449) and has built a strong foundation that will enable the Runnin’ Rebels to soar to new heights. As well as being head coach, Champagne has been active in the Loui-siana AAU circuit since 1987. He success-fully led his AAU 17-and-under squad, Team Acadiana, to a state championship and ranked 6th nationally in 1987.Before accepting the head coaching job at Lee College, Champagne served as an assis-tant coach for two seasons with the Rebels.

Champagne received his bachelors in General Studies from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1993. A native of Virginia Beach, VA, Champagne was raised in Louisiana. He graduated from St. Thomas More Catholic High School in La-fayette, La. Champagne and his wife, Mi-chelle, have two children, Catherine and Carson.
