Any member who brings a guest will receive one raffle ticket for a Windy Brushes Gift Certificate. Bring three guests, receive three raffle tickets! The art exhibit features members’ works painted in the last year. If works have already been shown in Chapter Display in the course of the year, please bring them again; they are always appreciated! The 27 th anniversary of Windy Brushes will be celebrated at the May meeting. The 2011 Dedi- cated Service Award will be bestowed at this meeting. It is Windy Brushes’ highest form of recognition of a deserving member. It is an honor reserved for one who is nominated by fellow members for outstanding and consistent contributions of time and talent to the Chapter and promotion of decorative painting. Congratulations and thanks to the 2011 Dedicated Service Award recipient and thanks to all who took time to nominate a member. Evonne Einoris will teach the July 9th Paint-In Seminar. It is a wood textured Heidi England Santa painted on a tall mini sled. It is truly a beautiful project. The Board wishes to extend the invitation to all members in good standing to enjoy this seminar free of charge as a way of thanking everyone for Chapter support throughout the past year. A charge of $25 per attendee will cover the two large tubes of the wood texture material. The Chapter will pick up the expenses of venue rental and costs, pattern packet, teacher stipend, and lunch. The Board members have volunteered to bring salads for lunch. Debi Gajewski is selling the sleds to the Chapter for $2 each. Details are in the pertinent article in this newsletter. A sample will be displayed at the May meeting and registration will be taken then as time will be needed to order the wood texture. Sincere thanks to Ann Johnson who has volunteered to decorate a table at the SDP conference banquet. Also, thanks to Camille Anzelmo, Toni Girten, Ronni Benedetti, Chris Wood, Catherine Plomb, Edna Devore, and Barb Marshall who have volunteered to paint decorations for another table. I wish at this time to say a very special thank you to Toni Girten for editing, printing, and mailing the newsletters. It is a time consuming job but one which is deeply appreciated by all of us. Thank you, Toni! If you have signed up to have you newsletter mailed and have not been receiving it, please let me know at [email protected] . I print the envelopes and try to keep the list updated. We are all looking forward to gathering at the May 14 th meeting at Chandler’s. Don’t forget to bring a painted item for bag raffle and your painted works to exhibit. Sincerely, Dorothy Carbonara

SHUTTERFLY—WINDY BRUSHES PICTURES Toni has set up a Shutterfly.com account for Windy Brushes of Northern Illinois, which allows all our members to have access to photos from past meetings, seminar photos, etc. This gives everyone the ability to download photos for use in our newsletter and for chapter mem-bers to access the photos. The photos are online, so it does hold the files on the website and doesn't take up space on anyone's hard drive, except those you choose to download. It also al-lows you to select the size of each photo that you wish to download.

Thank you to our Webmaster, Jim Rupany I would like to thank and acknowledge our Webmaster, Jim Rupany (husband of our member, Bev Rupany) for his support of our chapter. Jim does a great job of keeping our website up-dated. We will be revising the website as an ongoing project, when time allows. Toni.

Vintage Books—Debbie Cole, Chair Members and guests, bring all your books, magazines and patterns, recycle them to another painter! Lots of great ideas, lots to choose from for your next project.

SDP LIASION UPDATE Ann Johnson SDP ELECTIONS & BYLAWS REVISIONS The Decorative Painter magazine, Issue 1, 2011 includes Proposed Bylaws Amendments. The 2011 Slate of Officers along with their biographies is also printed in this issue. An Absentee Ballot to vote for the officers is printed on Page 115 of Issue 1 - please vote and to insure that your vote counts, be sure you read the instructions carefully on how to submit your ballot. According to the bylaws only the Slate of Officers may be voted on by absentee ballot. If you will be attending conference and the annual meeting, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR SDP 2011 MEMBERSHIP CARD with you. You will need to show it to receive a ballot. If you’re asking “What does SDP do for me?”: Ask yourself the following questions - Where does the network of travel teach-ers come from (along with the abundance of their patterns and books)? What influenced the availability of short handled paint brushes? What influenced the manufacture of bottled acrylics, mediums, fabric paints, and surfaces? How many of your friends are tied to decorative painting? No SDP! No chapters!??? No seminars? SDP BLOGS Have you signed up to receive SDP Blogs? Articles covered in the blogs just within the last 2 months cover: lessons & infor-mation on colored pencils and center of interest in paintings; brush cleaning tips; health tips for artists; conference information. So if you haven’t signed up yet, do so soon.

SPD UPDATE – by Ann Johnson

Membership Card

In order to save on postage fees and better utilize your membership dollars, we are sending

your 2011 SDP membership card with Issue #1

of the 2011 Decorative Painter magazine in-

stead in a separate mailing like we’ve done in

the past. Issue #1 will mail in late February. All

chapter presidents have been notified about this

change. If your president has any questions about this change in policy,

she is welcome to email [email protected].

ADD SOME BLING TO YOUR WARDROBE Add some eye-catching splash to any outfit with this fashionista

painter’s necklace! It includes a generous 32″ double silver plate chain. The stylish heart- shaped pendant acts as a

focal point to the dangling charms. A faux pearl and crystal bobble, two paint brushes, and a rhinestone-encrusted

palette makes this a CHARMING gift for only $18!

Make A Donation-The economic situation has had a devastating effect on not-for-profit organiza-tions. SDP in no exception. The stock market tumble has reduced our investment reserves. We have

had to lay off employees and are still looking for cuts to make our budget balance. Consider giving

a one-time donation* to help us through the hard times. How much is up to you. $5, $10, $25,

$50, $100 or more. If every member could give only $5 extra this year, it would make an enormous

difference. Don't hesitate because you cannot give a lot, do what you can. Send donations to:

2011 Windy Brushes Proposed Budget Due to the weather and illnesses in February, there was a very low turnout at the board meeting, therefore, the budget was not

presented for board review, and was tabled for the next board meeting in April, which was reviewed at the April board meeting and the proposed 2011 WB budget is included in the current newsletter. The WB 2011 Proposed Budget will be presented at

the May 14, 2011 WB chapter meeting at Chandler’s for chapter membership approval. The proposed 2011 budget is contained in this newsletter for review. Note: I will be in Wichita from May 12 –May 22 and will be unable to attend the May

2011 Windy Brushes Christmas Party Co-Chairs: Billie Morrow and Ann Johnson

The plans for the Windy Brushes Holiday Party are underway. It will be at Chandlers in Schaumburg. As with past Christmas parties, we are asking for our members to take part, decorating individual tables with their creativity. Each table will have a different theme. Attendance Contest Members who attend Windy Brushes Chapter 2011 meetings will have their name put in a box for each

meeting they attend in 2011. A name will be drawn from that box for a prize at the Christmas Party.

Proposed Increase in Chapter Membership Dues for 2012 At the April 2011 Windy Brushes board meeting it was discussed and proposed to be voted on by our chapter members in good standing at the May 14, 2011 chapter meeting that our annual Windy Brushes membership be increased from $15.00 to $20.00,

effective for 2012 chapter membership. Camille Anzelmo-Membership Chair and Toni Girten-Treasurer

Publicity – Kathleen Crow The Arlington Heights library asked for new pamphlets. Chapter Display – Kathy Miller Thanked members for the items on display. There will not be a chapter display in May as we’re having our art show. Parliamentarian – Billie Morrow Advised that we’re proper. Ann Johnson presented proposed revision in the seminar standing rules.: MOTION: A motion was made by Camille Anzelmo and 2nd by Toni Girten as follows:

“Seminar teachers shall receive a per diem of $25.00 per day to cover dinners and sundry expenses. In-house te4acher’s provisions shall be negotiated at the time of contracting. Chapter will not be re4sponsible for any expenses incurred after the conclusion of the final day of the seminar unless negotiated at the time of the contraction or any additional expenses due to a natural disaster or an Act of God, unless negotiated at the time of the contracting.”

The reason for the motion is that we all know that in this day and age, lawsuits are becoming very prevalent. If the chapter pays for liquor and the teacher or the seminar chair is involved in an accident, there is real potential for a lawsuit naming the Chapter as a defendant. If this were to occur, the very least the Chapter would have to do would be to hire an attorney to defend the Chapter. Worst case, would be a judgement that would bankrupt the Chapter. There is also a very real possibility that any suit could also name the officers and the seminar chair personally (we are not bonded or covered by insurance!!). Discussion was held. Nancy Simpson motioned to approve and 2nd by Camille Anzelmo. Motion approved. MOTION: A motion was made by Camille Anzelmo and 2nd by Toni Girten as follows:

“Teacher’s transportation fee shall be paid from their home/studio address, unless special arrangements are made at the time the contract is signed. (i.e. if teacher will be teaching for 2 chapters back to back, splitting of transportation fee may be negotiated) Mileage4 reimbursement shall be based on IRS publication 17 or from www.irs.gov. allowed business expense mileage reimbursements in effect at the time of the seminar. Commercial transportation will be provided to and from the airport at arrival and departure.”

Discussion was held. Chris Lee motioned to approve and 2nd by Debi Gajewski. Motion approved Caring & Sharing – Barbara Marshall Read letter she received from St. Joseph’s Carmalite Home for Children thanking the club for the boxes. Asked members to bring in supplies. Lending Library – Doris Burdick Asked members to complete questionnaire to identify items that they would like to see in the library.
