Dear Members:

As we move into fall, I was reflecting on the incredible number of juniors that we have as part of our membership. Based on the latest data, we have close to 750 members that are under the age of 18! I think that is wonderful! I also think we (the club and us as members) have a special obligation to our juniors at

the club. We are fortunate to touch them in their growing and formative years, not just for one season or one class, but on a sustained basis over 10+ years in many cases. This makes me ponder, what is the nature of MacGregor Downs Country Club’s obligation and commitment to these 750 juniors?

Certainly, there is a minimum set of expectations that we should be providing and living up to. Our first and paramount expectation is a safe and healthy environment – both for the juniors and peace of mind for us adults who leave our children to the care of the club – whether that be at the pool, in Kid’s Club or a Junior Golf clinic. Hopefully, we are living up to this everyday 365 days a year!

But, beyond a safe and healthy environment, what else should MDCC provide? Here is my wish list:

1. A place to make lifelong friends.

2. Excellent instruction to learn both skills and sportsmanship relating to our three sports of golf, tennis and swimming.

3. A focal point for competition against other clubs, teams and junior tournaments (in all three sports).

4. A fun, exciting and energizing place to swim, play tennis, play golf and other activities centered around MDCC.

5. High quality meals that these young people will enjoy eating (with a nice variety of healthy choices as well).

6. Life skills to help prepare them for the world past high school.

7. Contact and interaction with adults that are highly successful in their field – that are role models.

Send me an email at [email protected] with your thoughts (if you would put Junior in the subject line, I would appreciate it). Based on these responses, I’ll provide an update on the website about what you think we should be providing.

Thank you.,

OCTOBER

BOOK: The Lotus Eaters

AUTHOR: Tatjana Soli

DATE: Thursday, October 6

SYNOPSIS: A unique and sweeping debut novel of an American female combat photographer in the Vietnam War, as she captures the wrenching chaos and finds herself torn between the love of two men.

On a stifling day in 1975, the North Vietnamese army is poised to roll into Saigon. As the fall of the city begins, two lovers make their way through the streets to escape to a new life. Helen Adams, an American photojournalist, must take leave of a war she is addicted to and a devastated country she has come to love. Linh, the Vietnamese man who loves her, must grapple with his own conflicted loyalties of heart and homeland. As they race to leave, they play out a drama of devotion and betrayal that spins them back through 12 war-torn years, beginning in the splendor of Angkor Wat, with their mentor, larger-than-life war correspondent Sam Darrow, once Helen's infuriating love and fiercest competitor, and Linh's secret keeper, boss and truest friend.

Tatjana Soli paints a searing portrait of an American woman’s struggle and triumph in Vietnam, a stirring canvas contrasting the wrenching horror of war and the treacherous narcotic of obsession with the redemptive power of love. Readers will be transfixed by this stunning novel of passion, duty and ambition among the ruins of war.

GOLF

October Golf News Now that Fall is officially here, there is no better way to spend your leisure time than on the golf course and at the club. Come out and enjoy the spectacular colors of the trees as the leaves start to turn and enjoy a round of golf.

We are now an official PGA Family Course. We now have a golf course within a golf course that offers a short course experience and makes the game more enjoyable for our junior golfers. We have special tee markers that create a 2200 yard course and a 3800 yard course. Now our junior golfers will have more fun by shooting lower scores. This is a great way to spend time together as a family. ForeTees…the on line tee time system. Did you know that you can go mobile and make your tee time? It’s very easy. You must login to ForeTees on your computer and go to the “Settings” tab to create a user name and password for mobile. Once you have created your credentials, you can access ForeTees via the mobile login at http://m.foretees.com/macgregordowns. If you need mobile instructions, they are located on ForeTees in the upper left hand corner where it says “mobile help”.

Course CarePlease repair your ball marks and any others that you see on the greens. A properly repaired ball mark will heal faster. If you would like to know how to properly repair a ball mark, please see one of our professional staff. When filling your divots on the golf course after a shot, please fill them with sand and then step on the sand to level it out with the playing surface. If you

are a walker and don’t have a walking sand bottle and someone in your group is riding in a cart, please use the sand bottle from the cart to fill in your divot. After playing a shot from a bunker, please rake the bunker and any the disturbed areas in the bunker. After finishing please leave the rake in the bunker so that the handle is resting on the edge of the bunker and not sticking all the way out. When leaving the rake in this position it helps eliminate a ball getting stopped by the rake.

Tip from the Pro shopFrom the Practice Tee…VISION– whatever target your mind sees last is the one you’re going to find, so make sure you are thinking about the right one.
