On September 3, 2009, ribbon cutting ceremonies took place for the newly opened $1.5 million Frank L. Flautt Golf Center, located next to the Tiger Softball Complex on the Uni-versity of Memphis' Park Avenue Campus. The facility provides both the Tiger and Lady Tiger golf teams with state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor areas. The center includes a 400-yard driving range, complete with two teeing areas, two putting greens, and a chipping green. Inside, both teams have locker rooms with individual player lockers as well as study, kitchen and lounge areas. Both areas also have indoor hitting bays to be used during inclement weather.

Her scores of 71-67 (138) set a new 36-hole individual scoring record and helped lead Memphis to its two-lowest rounds in program history (291-288). Lady Tiger golf has claimed four titles since Novem-ber 2009. Memphis started things off by winning the UAB Fall Beach Blast in November, and fol-lowed it up with another victory at the South Alabama Lady Jaguar Invitational in March. In 2010-11, Memphis returned all five play-ers from the squad that won in South Alabama. The Lady Tigers started off the sea-son by winning the Bobcat Invitational by 34 strokes and new program records for low 18 (288) and 36-hole (579) totals and then defended their title at the UAB Fall Beach Blast with rounds of 292-300.

Winning Ways

Academic ProwessMemphis posted a 3.76 team GPA in Spring 2010, set-ting a University of Memphis record. The Lady Tigers also earned the C-USA Sport Aca-demic award, given to the men’s and women’s teams with the highest cumulative GPA. Marissa Steen was named to the C-USA All-Academic team and four Memphis golfers (Steen, Glavin, Mathews, and Hodgson) earned NGCA All-American Scholar honors. The Lady Tigers continued the tradition this fall, posting a 3.72 team GPA.

Coach Harrelson returned all five players from a team that fin-ished fourth in the C-USA Championship in 2010, so the bar was set high for the 2010-11 Lady Tigers. Memphis responded with a resounding 34-stroke victory in the season-opening Bobcat Invitational. Junior Marissa Steen led the way by posting scores of 71-67 en route to earning the second indi-vidual title of her career. Her 67 in the second round was a career-low and the lowest score of anyone under Harrelson. The Lady Tigers weren't satisfied, however, as the squad would go on to finish in the top five in four events in the fall, including an-other team victory at the UAB Fall Beach Blast. Steen again led Memphis, this time posting scores of 73-70 amidst soggy conditions to help the Lady Tigers defend their title for the second consecutive season. Coach Harrelson also brought back the Memphis Women's In-vitational after an eight-year absence from the Lady Tiger schedule. The event was an overall success as Memphis finished second in the 18-team field. In 2009, Harrelson welcomed three newcomers after losing just one returnee. After struggling to a 14th-place finish in the season opening Lady Paladin Invitational, Harrelson led the Lady Tigers to three top-5 finishes. After posting back to back third place finishes at the Lady Red Wolf Classic and the CSU Wendy’s Invitational, Mem-phis finally broke through to win the UAB Fall Beach Blast. Led by freshman Sarah Mathews’ rounds of 74-73, the Lady Tigers posted team totals of 300-295 (the lowest two team scores under Harrelson) to capture the first victory under Harrelson and the first for the pro-gram since 2007. After taking over a program that only had four returning schol-arship players in August of 2008, Harrelson led the 2008-09 Lady

Tigers to four top-10 team finishes. Harrelson worked on laying the solid foundation for future success of the women’s golf program. A graduate of Briarcrest High School, the former Beth Walthal signed a volleyball scholarship with the University of Alabama before declining the offer and choosing to attend the U of M. She arrived on campus in 1982 and played for Coach Diane Hale during the fall season. After redshirting for a year, she made the transition to golf in 1984 and received the team’s Most Improved Player award following the 1984-85 season. As a senior, Harrelson was selected as captain of her team and posted the team’s lowest scoring average. After graduating with a journalism degree, Harrelson participat-ed on the Futures Tour for two years before moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., to work as an assistant professional at the TPC of Scottsdale during the winter and at Stonebridge Golf Club during the remain-der of the year. In 1987, the talented player won the Memphis area Women’s Golf Association Tournament and the Double Eagle Golf Tourna-ment. She was also the medalist in the 1988 Tennessee State Tour-nament. She returned to Memphis permanently in 1990 and accepted a full-time position as the assistant pro at Stonebridge Golf Club. She became the golf instructor at Stonebridge in 1991 and held that position until 1998 when she moved to Quail Ridge Golf Club in Bartlett as the golf instructor. While working at Stonebridge Golf Club, she earned her PGA Class A membership into the Profes-sional Golfers Association in 1995. Harrelson was inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame in 1999. Later she was inducted into the Briarcrest High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. She and her husband, Tim, have three children; daughter Megan, who is a junior at the U of M;daughter Grace, who is a student at Briarcrest; and son, Jon.

In her third season as the head coach of the University of Memphis women’s golf team, Beth Har-relson continues to build the program into a national force. Prior to being named head coach of the Lady Tigers, Harrelson was an instructor at Memphis National Golf Club, as well as the head coach

of St. Mary’s High School.

1977-79• The University of Memphis women’s golf program

began in 1977 under current Associate Athletic Director Lynn Parkes. With a handful of tryouts, Parkes started a program that today is one of the most respected women’s golf programs in the country. That first Lady Tiger team consisted of Theresa Simi, Gloria Carkeet, Cindy Gabel, Kathy Whitetree, C.C. Chamberlain and Sydney Forrester.

• In the second season, Parkes awarded three scholarships and that number increased to 10 scholarship players in 1979-80. The first scholar-ship Lady Tiger golfers included Monice Madden, Jackie Worley and Elaine Heroux, a junior college transfer.

• The 1978-79 team participated in eight events and placed in the top 10 in four of the eight tourna-ments. The team won the TCWSE (Tennessee College Women’s State Finals) in 1979. Mary Ann Bailey had a season low round of 78, and she also qualified for the USGA Women’s Amateur. Karen Young was signed in 1978-79 and became an impact player for the Lady Tigers. The team cap-tured their first team championship in the TCWSF Tournament.

• In 1979-80, Maureen Danehy and Susan Hundley became Lady Tigers. Hundley had just won the Indiana Long Driving competition prior to signing with the University of Memphis.

1980-89• By 1982-83, Kathy Vendetti was added to the

already strong Lady Tiger golf team. She imme-diately made a name for herself and before she graduated, set virtually every U of M golf record. The Lady Tiger team placed in the top 10 in all four spring tournaments in 1983. They were fifth in the Troy State tournament for their best finish of the spring. Vendetti had a 78.8 stroke average and posted a low round of 74 in the Carrier/Memphis State Women’s Tournament. In her 26 rounds that year, 16 were in the 70s.

• Sally Andrews, a well-known local golfer, joined Memphis as assistant golf coach in 1983-84 and helped Parkes mold an even stronger team. Ven-detti led the Lady Tigers, placing third at the Ala-bama Intercollegiate. She was joined by Renee Schafer and together they fired more rounds in the 70s. Vendetti had a season low round of 72 at the Furman Intercollegiate and a 75 at the Lady Seminole and the Carrier/Memphis State Women’s Open. Schafer also had a low round of 75 at the Memphis tournament.

• Beth Walthal and Leslie Folsom were looked up to as leaders for the 1985-86 Lady Tiger team. They led the squad to a fifth-place finish at the Kentucky Lady Kat Intercollegiate and the Metro Conference Championships.

• In 1986-87 Andrews took over for Lynn Parkes as head coach, when Parkes was elevated to As-sistant Athletic Director for Women’s Sports. An-drews inherited a team made up of Angie Barker, Cynthia Brooks, and Folsom, and added the first international players to the team in Beatriz Cow-man of Chile and Heather Lee from Canada. She also inked Gia Kronske of Clearwater, Florida.

• In 1987-88 Parkes’ sister, Christi Parkes, was joining forces with Cowman, Lee and Kronske to post impressive scores. Parkes had a 75 in the Metro Conference Tournament. Cowman, a na-tive of Santiago, Chile, had a 76 at the Southern Intercollegiate, while Kronske finished 16th at the Hudson Invitational with a low round of 75. Lee was fourth in the Memphis Women’s Intercollegi-ate, while Barker finished tied for seventh in the Metro Conference Tournament with a three-round total of 235. The squad won the UAB Lady Blazer Tournament in the spring of 1988, the team’s first NCAA sanctioned tournament title.

• Cynthia Brooks was named the Most Improved Player for the Lady Tigers in 1988-89. Cowman continued her assault on par, firing a 74 at UAB’s Lady Blazer Tournament. Kronske was seventh in the Metro Conference and sixth at the Tiger-Tide. She received All-Metro Conference honors and finished the season with a 79.4 stroke aver-age. Lee had rounds of 73-74 at the True Tem-per/Memphis Women’s Open and led the team in stroke average with a 78.7 average per round.

• The Lady Tigers placed second in the UAB Lady Blazer Tournament in 1989-90 with Cowman, Kronske and Lee leading the team. Cowman had a 74.2 stroke average in the fall and placed fifth in the Kentucky Lady Kat Invitational. Both Kronske and Lee carried stroke averages in the 70s.

1990-99• Lori Brock came on board as the Lady Tiger head

coach in 1991-92 and under her tutelage, captured just the second official tournament championship in the history of the program. The Lady Tigers won the Nebraska Women’s Intercollegiate. The golf team also placed second in the Peggy Kirk Bell hosted by Rollins College and were fourth in the prestigious Tiger-Tide and South Alabama Inter-collegiate.

• In 1993-94, the Lady Tiger golf team grabbed the spotlight with its outstanding play. Led by Allison Bell and Kim Hunt, the Lady Tigers captured the first Great Midwest Conference women’s golf championship. Bell was the medalist and Hunt placed second, and head coach Lori Brock was named Coach of the Year. Alissa Lauder was the medalist in the NTU/SMU Invitational Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Golf Championships, where she placed 27th in a field of 102 golfers.

• The 1994-95 Lady Tiger golf team again swept through the Great Midwest Conference tourna-ment, held at Farmington Country Club in Mem-phis, winning by 47 strokes over its next closest opponent. Junior Melissa Isham claimed medalist honors with teammates Marie-Louise Hviid and Allison Bell tying for second. Isham was named to the All-GMC team, as were teammates Hviid, Bell and Cristi Fernandez. Hviid was also named GMC Newcomer of the Year and head coach Lori Brock received Coach of the Year honors.

• Lori Brock left the University of Memphis in the summer of 1995, and Debby King was hired as the new Lady Tiger head golf coach. King led her new team to its first championship of the Mem-phis Women’s Intercollegiate Tournament in Sep-tember and two additional top-five finishes in fall events.

• Under the direction of Debby King, the Lady Ti-gers captured their second tournament title of the season. Memphis won the rain-shortened Lady Panther Invitational, while Melissa Isham fired a 69 to earn individual medalist honors. Through the course of the 1995-96 season, the Lady Ti-gers wrapped up five top-five finishes and earned a spot in the NCAA Regionals for the first time in school history. Freshman Naima Ghilain was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year.

• The Lady Tiger golf team had the finest season in school history in 1996-97. Led by newcomer Amanda Moltke-Leth, the Lady Tigers won the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate to open the season. They closed the fall season by winning the Lady Panther Golf Classic in Atlanta and then ended the spring schedule with their third tour-nament victory, this time in the Conference USA Championship. Moltke-Leth took medalist hon-ors in the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate, the Lady Panther Golf Classic, and the Duke Spring Invitational en route to being named the Confer-ence USA Freshman of the Year. Debby King won Coach of the Year honors and all five Tiger team-mates - Kim Hunt, Amanda Moltke-Leth, Naima Ghilain, Meredith Thomas and Valerie Luehrs - were named to the All-Conference USA Team. The Lady Tigers received their bid to the NCAA Regional Championships and placed eighth.

• The 1997-98 Lady Tiger golf team continued with their nationally ranked play, as the team received their third-consecutive bid to the NCAA Champi-onships. The Lady Tigers had seven top-10 tour-nament finishes in nine tournament starts and placed 10th in the NCAA East Regional in Dur-ham, North Carolina. Amanda Moltke-Leth and Naima Ghilain were both named to the All-Confer-ence USA team.

• The 1998-99 Lady Tiger golf team made it four in a row when the team received another bid to the NCAA Regionals. The Lady Tigers travelled to Co-lumbia, South Carolina, for the NCAA Regionals and were led in play by Natalie Tucker, who tied for seventh at The University Club. On the year, Tucker won the individual title at the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate and finished third in the Conference USA Championships. She had seven top-10 finishes in the 10 tournaments in which the Lady Tigers competed. Naima Ghilain ended her career with Memphis by placing fifth in the Con-ference USA Championships and again being named to the All-Conference team, an honor she received all four years at the U of M.

• The 1999-2000 Lady Tiger golf team spent the fall introducing a number of young players to the game of college golf. Senior Valerie Luehrs led the squad with a second-place finish in the Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate. The highlight of the fall for the Lady Tigers was a trip to Hawaii to partici-pate in the Rainbow Wahine Fall Golf Classic. The team travelled to the islands and spent an enjoya-ble week playing in this prestigious college event. The trip marked the first time in the history of the program that a Lady Tiger golf team had traveled outside the continent for play.

2000-presenT• The 2000-01 Lady Tiger golf team enjoyed an-

other outstanding season. With a youthful squad, the Lady Tigers won the Conference USA Cham-pionship and received their fifth bid in six seasons to the NCAA Regional. Tiger freshman Meaghan Francella won the C-USA individual title and was named the Freshman of the Year. She was also named to the All-Conference and All-Tournament squads. Marianne Ruud was named All-Confer-ence and All-Tournament, while Jennifer Jaszek earned All-Tournament honors.

• The 2001-2002 season opened with former head coach Debby King leaving the U of M to start a pro-gram at Notre Dame. Katie Rump, an outstanding collegiate and amateur player from the Memphis area, was named as the interim head coach and led her team to a tournament victory in its first start of the season. The Lady Tigers went on to win the Edwin Watts/Carolina’s Classic, where junior Mar-ianne Ruud also captured the medalist honors for her first collegiate tournament victory. The Lady Tigers received their sixth invitation to the NCAA Tournament and participated in the East Regional in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sophomore Meaghan Francella received an individual invitation to the NCAA Championships.

• The 2002-03 season became another of change for the Memphis women’s golf team. Sheryl Maize, the head coach at Augsburg College in Minnesota and a noted teacher of the game, was hired as the permanent head coach replac-ing Katie Rump, who served as the interim coach for one year. Maize immediately won her first tournament, The Memphis Women’s Intercollegi-ate, and led the squad to three top-five finishes in the fall of 2002. The Tigers were third at the Louisville Lady Cardinal Cup and fourth at the Beacon Woods Invitational.

• Due to circumstances beyond their control, mem-bers of the Lady Tiger golf team and their head coach faced yet another change for the 2003-04 season. Maize returned to the state of Florida af-ter an extended family illness and was granted a year’s leave of absence to take care of family matters. Former NCAA official and South Carolina women’s golf coach Donna Noonan took over the team on an interim basis and coached the Lady Tigers.

• For the fourth-straight year, the Lady Tigers brought in a new coach. Jenny Bruun replaced in-terim coach Donna Noonan for the 2004-05 sea-son. Bruun came to Memphis after two years as the assistant coach for both the men’s and wom-en’s golf teams at Campbell University. A first-year head coach, Bruun inherited a young team with only one junior along with six sophomores and one freshman.

• Sophomore Stacey Tate led the Lady Tigers in the 2004-05 season with the program’s first individual title since 2002. Tate earned medalist honors at the Lady Eagle Classic and was selected the C-USA Player of the Week.

• Tate’s three first-place finishes were only some of the highlights of the 2005-06 campaign. Tate went on to set new school records for 18, 36, and 54 holes as well as posting a stroke average of 74.1, beating the previous school record by 1.7 strokes. As a team, the Lady Tigers roared to victory at the Lady Eagle Invitational, their first tournament victory since the 2002 Memphis Women’s Inter-collegiate.

• Memphis started off the 2006-07 season strong. After starting the year by finishing sixth at the Badger Women’s Golf Invitational, the Lady Tigers never finished lower than fifth the rest of the fall. A win at the Wildcat Fall Invitational followed by back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Lady Pala-din and Lady Jaguar Invitationals gave Memphis three consecutive top three finishes. The Lady Ti-gers climbed as high as No. 38 in the nation in the Golfstat fall polls and Stacey Tate was named one of GolfWorld Magazine’s Top 50 Female Players to Watch. The Lady Tigers capped off a success-ful spring by winning the conference champion-ship earning a trip to the NCAA West Regional in Utah. Senior Stacey Tate finished second at the conference tournament and was named first-team all-conference. Junior Dawn-Marie Co-naty and Rachel Larson were named third-team all-conference.

• After consecutive 11th place finishes to begin the 2007-2008 campaign, the Lady Tigers placed 5th at the Johnie Imes Invitational led by freshman Alexa Porter’s eighth-place finish. Junior Rachel Larson finished 12th at the Pat Bradley Champi-onship and Porter placed 15th. Larson earned her second-consecutive All-Conference USA Third Team honor and Porter was named to the C-USA All-Tournament team after tying for second in the C-USA Championship.

• Under first year head coach Beth Harrelson, the Lady Tigers entered the 2008-09 campaign with three newcomers and only five players on the roster. The young group continued to improve throughout the fall, closing out the fall with two consecutive top-10 finishes at the Lady Red Wolf Classic and the Ross Resort Invitational. Sen-ior Rachel Larson and freshman Marissa Steen both notched two top-20 finishes in each of those events, including a fourth-place showing by Steen at the Lady Red Wolf Classic. In the spring, the team competed in four events, posting two top-10 finishes, including an eighth-place finish at the Conference USA Championship.

• After struggling to a 14th-place finish at the sea-son opening Lady Paladin Invitational, the Lady Tigers rebounded with four consecutive top-10 finishes to close out the fall. Led by Leslie Grabe-man’s performance that would garner C-USA Golfer of the Week accolades, Memphis finished T3 in the Lady Red Wolf Classic. In the next week, the Lady Tigers posted their second-consecutive third-place finish after being led by rounds of 76-74 from freshman Alex Aläng. In the final event of the season, Sarah Mathews posted rounds of 74-73 to tie for second individually and lead Mem-phis to a title at the UAB Fall Beach Blast. The vic-tory was the first under second year head coach Beth Harrelson and the first for the program since the 2007 Conference USA Championship. Mem-phis struggled to a 15th place finish in the Hur-ricane Invitational in its first event of the spring, but bounced back by claiming victory in their next tournament, the USA Lady Jaguar Invitational. Marissa Steen carded scores of 75-73-74 to earn medalist honors and lead the Lady Tigers to their second victory of the season. Steen also received C-USA Golfer of the Week honors for her perfor-mance. Memphis then finished sixth at the Cincin-nati Spring Invitational, where it posted scores of 312-308-305. Memphis narrowly missed claiming its third title of the season at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic, instead finishing second. Aläng led Mem-phis with a third place individual finish and earned C-USA Golfer of the Week honors. In the C-USA Championship, the Lady Tigers posted their host-ed tournament total of the season (895) and the third lowest in school history to finish fourth.

M clUB hall of faMe

During the short 29-year history of the University of Memphis Lady Tiger golf program, there have been numerous outstanding players and several have been inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame. Kathy Vendetti, who played from 1980 through 1983, was the first Lady Tiger golfer to be installed in the Hall of Fame. Vendetti was inducted during ceremonies in 1994. Beth Walthal-Harrelson was voted into the prestigious Hall in 1999. Walthal-Harrelson was a stellar performer for the U of M from 1983 through 1987 and is now in her third season at the helm of the Lady Tiger golf program. The latest inductee into the Hall of Fame was Kim Hunt-McNeil, who was a member of the Hall of Fame class of 2001. Hunt-McNeil, who is married to former Tiger golfer Sam McNeil, played for the Lady Tigers from 1993 through 1997. She was an All-Conference USA selection in 1996 and won the Conference USA medalist title in 1997. Hunt-McNeil also helped the Lady Tigers to the team championship in ‘97.

When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, “We fight like Tigers.” The nickname was born. More and more the nickname “Tigers” was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use “Normals” or the “Blue and Gray” when referring to the University. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the “Teachers” or “Tutors.” The Tiger nickname would return, but not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis. For over 35 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been a Bengal Tiger named TOM. TOM attends all Tiger Football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year. TOM travels in style in a custom-designed, climate-controlled trailer, always with police escort. As one of only two universities in America with a live tiger mascot, The University of Memphis is unique in its Tiger Tradition. As a project of the Highland Hundred, no public or University funds are used to provide for TOM’s needs, and no University resources are required in his care. TOM is a powerful and majestic symbol of the University of Memphis, and his presence presents constant opportunities to educate Tiger fans young & old through the preservation of one of the world’s most recognizable endangered species.

The first Tiger, TOM, was procured by the Highland Hundred Football Boosters in 1972 and served the U of M faithfully for nearly 20 years until passing away in February of 1992. The Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University in a ceremony at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on November 11, 1972, during a football game against the University of Cincinnati. TOM had initially been named ‘Shane’ at the suggestion of the breeder’s daughter. Once in Memphis, though, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries were submitted. The list was ultimately reduced to two choices, Shane, and TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis. TOM won. In the fall of 1991, the Highland Hundred Tiger Guard received TOM II as a gift from Tom and Carolyn Atchison of Florence, Alabama. TOM II would serve with pride for 17 years through 2008, passing away on October 15th of that year.

Shortly after TOM II’s death, the Tiger Guard began the search for a new tiger to serve as TOM III, and a stroke of good luck was realized in a discussion with the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center in Rock Springs, Wis. Faced with three new cubs born August 31, 2008, after an unexpected pregnancy at their facility, founders Jeff Kozlowski and Jenny Meyer offered to donate one of their young tigers to serve as TOM III. TOM III was introduced at a press conference on November 17, 2008, and the Tiger Guard officially presented him to the University on November 22 during a football game against UCF.

The University of Memphis’ official school colors of Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.

the Logo

The University of Memphis’ official logo was redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis, Tenn. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping Tiger coming out from behind the letter. The new logo is an “M” with a leaping Tiger coming up over the center of the “M.”

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million resi-dents, while retaining the charm and down-to-earth feel of a small town. Downtown Memphis recently realized a building boom valued at $2.3 billion which transformed the heart of the city. One of the most visible projects was the construction of AutoZone Park, the downtown ballpark which is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320-seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the Na-tional Basketball Association and the Univer-sity of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for conces-sion stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have per-formed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the en-tertainment center of Memphis and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music of-fered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississip-pi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekend-long event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival which also includes the World Championship Bar-becue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such artists as

the MarKeys, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Museum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jer-ry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of His-torical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located down-town is the beautiful Orpheum Theater which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a ma-jor distribution hub with two interstate high-ways intersecting the city. Memphis is also home of FedEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis International Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial passenger flights originate from Memphis International each day.

For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its inception as a normal school dedicated to the education of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologically-savvy graduates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mission while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennessee, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universi-ties; they come here to study subjects that are offered nowhere else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recog-nized and respected throughout the academ-ic and scientific communities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most historic and productive periods. From the fac-ulty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environ-ment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto year-book was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s of-fices. In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931 the students created a campus newspaper, The Tiger Rag; and in 1935 the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became pres-ident - the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950 graduate studies were initiated, and in 1954 the school switched from a quarter to

a semester system. In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first African American students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Center and a 12-story library. In 1983 MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by anoth-er name change and another building boom. In 1994 MSU became the University of Mem-phis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was completed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctor-al-extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s largest city, it is the flagship of the Ten-nessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, The University of Memphis has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five state-approved Centers of Excellence.

Dr. Shirley C. Raines became the 11th president of the University of Memphis on July 1, 2001. She is the first woman to hold the presi-dency of the University, which was founded in 1912. The University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a high research university, with approximately 22,000 students and 2,500 employees. Previous to her appointment at the Univer-sity of Memphis, Dr. Raines was Vice Chancellor for Academic Services and Dean of the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. While at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., she received the Distinguished Faculty Member award and has received two research awards from the Eastern Educational Research Associ-ation. She is the author of 14 books and numer-ous journal articles and is widely regarded as an expert in teacher education and early childhood education. During the years of Dr. Raines’ tenure at the University of Memphis, the following build-ing projects have been completed: the FedEx Institute of Technology, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management, the Student Activities Plaza and fountain, the clock tower, University Services Building with new bookstore, additions to the Carpenter Stu-dent Housing Complex, the renovation of Wilder Tower, which is devoted to student services. Just in the last year, grand openings have been held for the Law School, which was relocated to the historic downtown location on the Missis-sippi River, the new University Center and the Living Learning Residence Complex. Improvement to athletic facilities have also been a priority with the construction of the Ath-letic Training Facility, Tiger Softball Complex,

FedExPark, Frank L. Flautt Golf Center, and upgrades and renovations to the football train-ing facilities, Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium and the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Described in The Commercial Appeal as “powerful, prepared and personable,” she has become known for her effective work in building productive partnerships on and off the campus. This emphasis has enabled the University to realize significant increases in annual giving to the University. Establishment of the University of Memphis Research Foundation along with the University’s focus on engaged scholarship in the community has facilitated an increase of spon-sored research grants and contract awards by almost 100% since the beginning of Dr. Raines’ tenure in 2001. Major focus areas of her work with students include an increased emphasis on the retention of students, expansion of the University’s Honors and Emerging Leaders programs, the establishment of a guaranteed internship program for qualified students, living learning residential and curricular learning com-munities throughout campus. Dr. Raines served on the board for the NCAA for the past five years and chaired the Presidential Task Force Oversight and Monitor-ing Group while also serving on the Board of Directors of C-USA. While Chair of the Board of Directors of C-USA, Dr. Raines led the confer-ence through realignment. The April 2009 issue of Business TN, included her on the magazine’s list of the 100 most powerful people in Tennessee. Dr. Raines earned her Doctorate in Educa-tion and her Master of Science degree from the

University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Her Bach-elor of Science degree is from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She also completed the Management Development Program from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has returned to Harvard for the past three years as a keynote speaker for the Institutes for Higher Education addressing new university presidents and chancellors. A native of Bells, Tennessee, she is mar-ried to retired professor, Dr. Robert J. Canady. In his retirement, he is a stained glass artist and a private pilot. Bob and Shirley are the parents of four adult children and four grandchildren.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last eight years and played for the Men’s Basket-ball National Championship title in 2007-08. In addition, for the last 11 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 30, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 15 total C-USA cham-pionships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tournament champion-ships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the wom-en’s soccer program claimed four consecutive league championships from 2007-10. Johnson is currently spearheading his sec-ond major capital campaign which benefits nearly every area of the Tiger Athletic Department. In-cluded in the $12.9 million project is a new ad-dition to the Athletic Office Building, a weight room and turf practice field for Tiger Football, a redesign of the Tiger baseball stadium that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the completed golf practice facility, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basketball practice facility, a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms and the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame to honor Tiger athletes. Johnson’s first capital campaign was previ-ously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign in-cluded a new 8,000-square-foot football and bas-ketball office complex addition, a new basketball

practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete renova-tion of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholar-ship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Di-rector’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members un-der Johnson. A significant revenue source for Ti-ger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Properties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the partner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promotions and sponsorships, as well as the official athletic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Tigers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M entered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Tiger athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, John-son leads a department that set a school record with 51 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher during the spring 2010 semester. For the most recent academic year, which in-cludes fall 2009 and spring 2010, 339 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA and eight had a 4.0 for the year and 33 others had a 4.0 either in the fall or spring. For the spring 2010 semes-ter, the athletic department as a whole posted its highest GPA ever with a 2.94 and 23 student-athletes garnered a 4.0 GPA. In May 2010, 48 athletes earned their degrees, marking the larg-est group for one ceremony since 2002 when the athletic academic services department began keeping record.

Before taking over Tiger Athletics, Johnson was responsible for directing a Temple program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nationally-visible programs in men’s basketball and football. He was named Temple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previously led the depart-ment at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant at Mankato State Univer-sity from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 sea-sons after serving as an assistant coach at North-ern Iowa (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Univer-sity of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s de-gree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Committee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three chil-dren: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchildren and one great grandson.
