Meet the CoachAdam Martel is the Head Coach of the Men’s Volleyball team. Martel took over the reins of the Saints’ program in 2010. Prior to Emmanuel, Martel coached at the University at Albany, Suffolk University, Boston College and Boston University. As the head coach at BU, he guided the Terriers to one of the best finishes in the program’s history and a national ranking as high as 29th. The team achieved a 29-9 record and placed two players on all-tournament teams. In his role with the BC Eagles, Martel worked with the setters, outside hitters and serve-receive offense for the women’s program. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and helped the Eagles bring in a top-30 recruiting class in 2008 and a top-50 recruiting class in 2009. While at Emmanuel, Martel coached the Saints to a program-record for wins in a season in 2011.

Throughout his coaching career, Martel has been heavily involved with club volleyball, having coached SMASH Volleyball Club’s 15s and 18s teams to multiple tournament victories over the course of 2006 and 2007, including a first-place finish at the East Coast Championships and Long Island Big Apple tournaments. He coached the 2007 boys’ high school scholastic team to a gold medal in the Massachusetts Bay State Games. He also coached for the North Shore Juniors Volleyball Club, where he led its top-18s team to the best finish in club history and for Peninsula Juniors Volleyball Club, where he led its top-18s team to many tournament victories and a ranking as high as 35th in Northern California.

In 2008, Martel was invited to work with the USA Olympic Development High Performance program, where he served as a court coach and helped evaluate and train athletes in the USA Olympic team pipeline. Martel has directed and worked many camps and clinics, received his Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory Certification (IMPACT) and is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. A graduate of Merrimack College, Martel received his degree in communication and business administration.

FacilitiesThe Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium is home to the Saints for both practice and competition. With bleacher seating for up to 1400, game nights become the place to be for the EC Superfans, the dance team and the cheerleaders. The Yawkey Center also includes a state-of-the-art training facility, as does St. Joseph Hall. Both fitness centers are updated with new platforms, racks, free weights, and plate-loaded equipment. St. Joseph Hall also includes a separate cardio room.

Teams that win a GNAC Championship receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, newly established for 2012. GNAC colleges with participating men’s volleyball programs include: Albertus Magnus College, Emerson College, Johnson & Wales University, Lasell College, Mount Ida College and Rivier College.
