Dear Possible Contestant:

We are excited that you are considering becoming a contestant in the 2011 Miss Georgia Cotton and Miss Georgia Cotton Outstanding Teen Pageant, which will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011. This is a great way to earn some scholarship money and possibly go on to compete for Miss Georgia or for Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen which will be held in June, 2011 in Columbus, Ga.

Because the Miss America rules do not permit the charging of entry fees for the Miss contestants, only Teen Miss Contestants are required to pay an entry fee of $150.00 which may be secured by a sponsor or sponsors. We encourage you to get sponsors. A sponsor can be an individual, business, organization or club. Sponsors will be listed in our program book and will be recognized at the pageant.

The National Platform of the Miss American Organization is the Children’s Miracle Network. In conjunction with the Miss America Organization, the Miss Georgia Cotton contestants will be asked to raise $100.00 each in donations for the Children’s Miracle Network. Information about this will be attached to this letter. All monies donated for this cause are tax deductible and will be sent to the Miss America Organization.

Another award that will be given at the pageant is for the Miss Georgia Cotton Congeniality and the Miss Georgia Cotton Outstanding Teen Congeniality. You and your peers will have the honor of voting (during the pageant) for a girl in the Miss division and a girl in the Outstanding Teen division who has been the friendliest, kindest, and most sportsman like throughout the pageant.

The pageant will begin with an opening number and each contestant (Miss & OT) will introduce themselves at this time. Opening number is casual attire and the colors are black & white. Example: White top and black bottom or black top and white bottom. Choose your own casual attire as long as it is tasteful (example: slacks, skirt or dress).

Enclosed is a talent request form that needs to be turned in with your application. No two contestants can have the same music, so the first one to submit the talent request will be the one that will be permitted to perform the selection in question. The postmark date on your envelope or delivery date to me will determine when the form was submitted. You may mail your talent CD-R to me or bring your CD-R (No CD-RW-these will not work) to Mary Walker 1411 Rutland Road, Tifton, Georgia 31793. No exceptions! Please be sure to have two copies made, one for us and one for you to practice with for the pageant. Please note: Talent time is limited to a total of 90 seconds which is the same as the Miss Georgia Pageant.

All contestants need a black & white or color head and shoulders photo for the program book. It doesn’t matter since our program is printed in black and white. Photo may be mail to Mary Walker 1411 Rutland Road, Tifton, Georgia 31793 or email to [email protected] by Monday, January 31, 2011.

No Orientation will be held.

Registration Instructions for Local Pageant Contestants:

Congratulations on becoming involved with the one of the nation’s leading achievement programs and the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 Million in scholarship assistance.

Page 12: 2011 Miss Georgia Cotton Paperwork - A Miss Georgia Official Preliminary

Beginning in 2007, Miss America has developed a National Platform and has partnered with Children’s Miracle Network – an alliance of children’s hospitals. Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals across North America. Each year the 170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals provide the finest medical care, life-saving research and preventative education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries of every kind.

This National Platform starts at the Local Pageants with the 2011 pageant year (these locals may take place in calendar year 2010 or 2011 with the winners going to the State 2011 Pageant).

How to register as a contestant of a local pageant

Each contestant is asked to register on-line at www.MissAmerica4Kids.org. At the bottom of the first screen is a button labeled “New Contestants - click here”. Press that button and you are on your way. It will take you 5 minutes to register. After you click the New Contestants button you will get a screen like this:

Eleven lucky steps to registering for the National Platform:

1. Fill in all the data lines that have an asterisk at the beginning of them. All the data.2. You have choices as shown in the dropdown boxes where it asks you to “Select.”.3. The Pageant State is where you are competing in a pageant.

Page 13: 2011 Miss Georgia Cotton Paperwork - A Miss Georgia Official Preliminary

4. The Pageant year is 2012. (These pageants have winners that will go to the Miss America 2012 pageant.)5. Title Competing For: is the title of the pageant you are currently, for this specific pageant, competing for. You are asked to return to this like when you enter the next pageant and change this name to the pageant that you are then competing for. You may have multiple pageants that you enter. 6. Your expected minimum goal is $100 for each local pageant level but you may select a higher goal. This minimum local pageant goal of $100 is for the National Platform which is very similar to the personal platform that you may have. 7. Fill in everything with an * in from of the line.8. Upload a picture (if you want to, this is optional).9. Then click on Save to save and file the data.10. You will get to a page that tells you that you have saved the data.11. Next, click on “Send emails” on the left hand side and enter email addresses to send to your friends and family. (Hint: send one email to yourself at your own email address, then when you get that email from the system, add a personal note to that email and forward this email to as many as you like within your own email system. This way you will know who you sent the email to.)

The funds raised are under your name and roll-over to qualify you for future pageants within this Pageant Cycle. For example, if you raise $500 then you are pre-qualified for 5 local pageants. But, for each pageant you compete in you must update your profile on MissAmerica4Kids.org to reflect that newly entered pageant name. If you win local pageant #2, then the $300 excess ($100 was used for each of the 2 local pageants leaving $300 left over) is applied to the State Pageant minimum goal of $250 and you have already met that goal and are qualified for the State Pageant automatically.

It is as simple as that. You may track your progress and see how you are doing. The more emails you send, the more funds you raise for both of these great organizations. Yes, these funds are for both entities – the donations help increase the future scholarship fund at the Local, State and National Levels, as well as go to supporting the children’s hospitals.

So, please take 5 minutes and go to MissAmerica4Kids.org and register for the pageant you will be competing in. If you elect to compete in additional local pageants simply return to MissAmerica4Kids.org and update your pageant you are competing in (select the next pageant you are entering). Good luck and enjoy the priceless experience you will have.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity and Inclusiveness

Page 14: 2011 Miss Georgia Cotton Paperwork - A Miss Georgia Official Preliminary

It is imperative that this nation face and embrace its cultural diversity. While many people have talked about this issue, I believe that most of them have only paid lip service to the true necessity of what needs to be addressed related to this issue. There is a false truth in merely accepting and tolerating cultural diversity. I intend to prove that in order to accept and understand people of other cultures; one must be willing to step out of a personal cultural comfort zone and identify the origin of their prejudice. I will specifically focus on three areas: Children, Communities, and Businesses.

The title of Miss America, combined with the national media already looking at the surface of this issue, will allow me to create the national awareness that must exist. Currently, the term “Cultural Diversity” is well known in the halls of institutions of higher learning and, perhaps, even in the public school classroom because of the need for some to be politically correct. But, in order for us to make a true change in attitudes and behaviors of Americans, we must move beyond talk and into action and policy changes.

My plan is to motivate the media and to partner with the National Conference for Community and Justice. This organization has chapters in every major city in the nation and, in many cases, those chapters have community leaders involved who can, with encouragement and challenging, bring this issue out of hiding and into the public light in each of those communities.

Obviously, the media and the NCCJ already exist. However, what is lacking is a lightening rod to draw attention to this issue. This is where the Miss America Organization steps into the lead. What better role is there for Miss America than to be an agent of change in organizing our nation to accept our differences and to create an environment that values each person on individual characteristics rather than on stereotypes or assumptions?

For years, Miss America was seen as a young woman who cut ribbons and appeared in parades. It is time for “Miss America” to step out of the convertible and lead the parade. Our country’s ethnic make-up is changing rapidly and our citizen’s fear of terrorism can explode already existing, but deeply hidden prejudices. I want to be the leader that this nation needs.

This nation needs this issue addressed now and through the already existing NCCJ and its local and state organizations combined with the power of Miss America, we can make a concrete difference now, which will change the direction and the future of our nation.

Instructions for Typing the Contestant’s Platform Statement

Please remember. This is your opportunity to explain to the judges what your chosen platform is and why it is important for the Miss America Organization to embrace this platform. In addition, it should explain how your platform will further the Miss America Organization “brand” to the public. This ONE (1) page, single-spaced document combined with the Contestant’s Resume, will comprise your entire application for this job. The judges will receive exactly what is submitted. Any items submitted that do not fit the established criteria will be returned for correction only once. Any items that do not meet the criteria or are submitted after the deadline will not be given to the judges. If your Platform Statement arrives on the day of the deadline, but does not meet the criteria, there will not be time to return it to you; therefore, it will not be given to the judges. The contestant may explain the lack of judging materials during her interview, if she so chooses.

What you write will be what the judges know about your platform, your role in successfully dealing with this issue, and the role the Miss America Organization may play in your plan.

8. This essay may include some of the following items (this is not to be meant as an exhaustive list): A clear definition of the platform and the specific issues you wish to address A plan on how you have or will create awareness of the platform The way in which you have or will change attitudes regarding the issue The way in which you have or will change behaviors related to this issue The way in which your platform issue will move the Miss America Organization

Talent: Pop Vocal / “Fallen”

Scholastic Honors: Recipient of National Coca-Cola Scholarship; Recipient of the Metropolitan Urban League National Scholarship; Dean’s List; Member of the President’s Leadership Council at the UCF

Leadership Roles: Created and implemented a comprehensive Cultural Diversity Education Curriculum for grades K-12 in twelve Public Schools; University Student Body Senator; H.S. Sr. Class Pres.; College Sorority President.

Accomplishments: Recipient of the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to Community; Recipient of the National Conference for Community and Justice Humanitarian Award; Performer, Grand Ole Opry in Nashville; Piano Performance scholarship at State University.

Interesting Facts: First person on either side of my family to attend college; Youngest of five children with a 13-year gap between me and my next oldest sister and an almost 20-year gap between the oldest and myself.

Employment: Internship with a Law Firm; Internship with local ABC television affiliate; Student Assistant at State University.

How has the world you come from shaped your dreams and aspirations? I come from a loving, supportive family that has always taught me to work hard for the things I want to achieve. Growing up, my parents always encouraged us to get involved with our local community and help those who were less fortunate than us. They tried to instill good values in us and to always guide us on the right path. I think it is because of these lessons my parents taught me that I want to make a difference in today’s world. I aspire to be a woman of great influence, preferably working in the non-profit sector, where I can apply my talents for the greater good and help to change people’s lives. One person truly can make a difference, and I am on my way to proving that cliché. I also dream to one day have a loving family of my own, with beautiful children in whom I can instill the same core values that my parents gave to me.

Of all the ways you could succeed in your life, why have you chosen to succeed in the Miss America Pageant?Along with providing the financial assistance for young women to fulfill our educational goals, the Miss America Organization gives us the opportunity to bring national attention to a cause dear to our hearts. If I were to become Miss America, I know that my voice would be heard as a spokesperson for my personal platform, as well as the national platform. Raising awareness of important social and political issues has always been important to me, and Miss America provides the perfect arena for that.

What social issue, other than your platform, will have the greatest impact on your generation and why?Although I’m not sure I would consider it a social issue, I think technological advancements will have the greatest social impact on my generation. Technology is changing everything – the way we communicate, our lifestyles, access to information – it’s all right at your fingertips! That can be a double-edged sword. I believe we run the risk of losing both interpersonal and language skills due to the ease and speed of communicating electronically. I believe our educators should address this issue immediately, or it may, unfortunately, have the greatest impact on my generation and every generation to follow.
