The 24th annual National American Indian Science & Engineering Fair and EXPO (NAISEF) took place in Albuquerque in March 2011. The only national science fair of its kind, NAISEF was hosted by AISES March 24-26 and welcomed students from Florida to Alaska, with over 200 student projects in STEM areas from animal science to engineering and mathematical science to biochemistry. This year’s NAISEF also included engaging, hands-on opportunities on the EXPO floor.

When not exploring the demonstrations, or participating in a written math competition, NAISEF participants had the chance to demonstrate professionalism in presentation research, as scores of judges from corporations and other partners queried the students in depth about their projects.

During the podcasted awards ceremony on Saturday, March 26, over 70 special awards (see page 3) were presented by judges from corporate and community partners in categories awarding students for innovation, perseverance, sustainability-focus, and other attributes, the judges selected six Grand Award Winners who will compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles May 8-13, 2011.

The Grand Award Winners were Micah Hill, Courtney Jackson, Antonio Morsette, Ivan and Nicholas Rajen, and Cassan-dra Roy. Because two of these awardees previously qualified for ISEF in their state science fairs, the two alternates, Alec Lamirande and Preston Jackson (a team), and Raquel Redshirt will get the chance to compete at ISEF as well.
