2011 Numerical Roster In charge of athletic media relations at his alma mater since January of 1989, Doug Ireland coordinates publicity efforts for Northwestern’s 14 intercollegiate sports teams through local, regional and national media outlets in print, broadcast, television and the internet.

He also serves in the volunteer role of chairman of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. Ireland assumed that post in April 1991. His 1992 Demon Football Media Guide won “Best in the Nation” in FCS Division from the College Sports Information Directors of America. A 1997 story on Joe Del-aney, “The Guy We Called Joe D,” won a national second-place award in a COSIDA writing contest. Ireland has won numerous awards as SID from the Louisiana Sports Writers Associa-tion. He was recently awarded the Distinguished American Award” by the S.M. McNaughton Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.    Several of his assistant SIDs and graduate assistants have advanced to prominence in media fields. Former NSU sports information staffers under Ireland include Bruce Ludlow, assistant commissioner of the Southland Conference for media relations; Bill Magrath, media relations manager for the Sports Business Daily; Mike Morrison, co-editor of the ESPN Information Please Almanac; Daucy Crizer, assistant AD and business manager at Lamar; Erik Cox, SID at Lamar; Dart Volz, former SID at Southeastern Louisiana; Melissa Reynaud, former as-sistant SID at LSU; Kenny Lannou, SID at Kansas State; and Troy Mitchell,  SID at Henderson State. Dustin Eubanks, NSU’s director of NCAA compliance, worked in the NSU SID office as a graduate assistant and for two years as the fulltime assistant. And Adam Jonson, NSU’s former ticket manager, was a student and graduate assistant in the SID office. In 1981-82, while an undergraduate at Northwestern, Ireland worked as chief of the Shreveport Times Natchitoches Bureau, coordinating news coverage of an eight-parish region along the Red River. From 1982-85, he was assistant SID at Southwestern Louisiana, working with a men’s basketball program that made three straight postseason tournament appearances. He won CoSIDA publications and writing awards while at USL. Ireland was the sports editor of the Natchitoches Times in 1985-86 and attended graduate school at Northeast Louisiana before joining the Alexandria Town Talk sports staff in 1987. In 18 months at the Town Talk, he covered both NSU and LSU sports and won 15 writing awards from the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association.    In 2001, the LSWA presented its prestigious Mac Russo Award to Ireland for his contri-butions to the organization. In 1999, Ireland was awarded honorary membership in the Graduate N Club at NSU by the university’s group of athletic lettermen for his service to Northwestern and its athletic program, and in 2003 he was given full membership. He was appointed by President Dr. Randall Webb to serve a two-year term on the inaugural Univer-sity Planning Council in 1997-99.   A member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and a student government senator while completing a journalism degree from Northwestern, Ireland was editor of the student newspaper “Current Sauce” as a sophomore before going to work for the Shreveport Times. He was an all-district baseball player and the student body president at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, where he was a wingback for the Tigers’ 1977 Class AA state football finalists coached by Don Shows.

After a two-year absence from the Southland Con-ference postseason tournament, the 2011 version of the Northwestern State Lady Demon soccer team will look to return to the slate that it has been so successful over the years. A unit that returns 22 starters and 7 players with playing experience is one of just two Southland teams to have won four conference tournament champion-ships. And the fact that the Lady Demons will host the 2011 tourney gives the team more motivation to hoist that fifth trophy. “Hosting the Southland Conference tournament is a tremendous honor,” said 13th-year head coach Jimmy Mitchell. “The Southland has developed into one of the most competitive conferences in the country. From top to bottom, anyone can beat anyone on any day. “When the tournament kicks off, there will be teams that won’t qualify that could potentially win it. This balance makes for an exciting race to see who will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.” This Lady Demon team is stacked with a quality senior class that has tremendous talent, character, and work ethic. “This year’s seniors have been mainstays in our program for a long time,” said Mitchell. “I truly be-lieve it is time for them to shine and bring our program back into contention for the league title.” Aside from the experienced senior class, a large sophomore class, who as freshmen in 2010 gained valuable experience with as many as seven newcomers positioned in the starting unit, will be called upon to widen the talent level on the field. Coach Mitchell’s thoughts on the team:

“With the return of 2010 starter sophomore Jes-sica Danku in net, the Lady Demons start the year with much more experience than the previous season. “Jessica showed tremendous improvement in 2010 and with her height and ability in distribution, she could join a long list of great goalkeepers that have played at NSU. “Competition makes one better and Jessica will not be without plenty of competition. “Junior Christian Marks showed tremendous im-provement and much more composure in the spring and is poised to possibly step into the regular starting role herself.

“Christian has great athleticism and determination. If she is lacking one thing, it is the experience that was gained much of that this past spring. “Junior Sam Furlow, who is coming off of an in-jury, has the most presence and command of the goal-keeping box and will be looked upon to give leadership to the position. “If she can recover in time from surgery in the off-season, she could challenge for time in the net as well.”

“The defense will be led by senior Camerron Ma-son at the center back position. “Camerron is solid as a rock on the back line and is a composed player who makes players around her better. “She will be joined on the back line with sopho-more returning starters Jade Theriot and Shannon Danku, who stepped in during the 2010 season and played well as true freshmen. “Junior Marissa Lees was moved to the back line in the spring and brought an attacking presence to the field that is much needed. “Sophomore Danielle Harding possesses tremen-dous speed and athleticism and played much more

composed in the spring and should be a factor when the starters are named. “Alex Rios, a freshmen from Fort Worth who has international playing experience with the Mexico Na-tional team, will push for playing time immediately as well. “After suffering through a 2010 season playing three and four players at a time without college experi-ence at the defensive position, the 2011 season appears to be much brighter. “We expect great things from this position. We have prided ourselves on quality defense for years and we should be back to our high standards in 2011.”

“The midfield will be anchored by seniors Rachel O’Steen and Haley Cheshier to begin the 2011 cam-paign. “O’Steen possesses an unbelievable work ethic and competitive desire. “She will be expected to lead the charge at this po-sition along with Cheshier. “Haley has the physical strength and technical ability to be a force. “Junior Theresa Halle will also be looked upon at the defensive midfield position to challenge for a start-ing spot. “Sophomore Ashlee Savona, who missed much of the conference season while competing for the Guyana National Team at the World Cup Qualifying Tourna-ment, will add flair and creativity to the attacking mid-field position. “Midfielder Taylor Mulnix played well in the spring games and will push for time as well. “She has great technical ability and good vision. “Three freshmen will be looked upon to play sig-nificant minutes in the midfield - Destiny LaRue, Julia Ranalli, and Chelsea Schaefer.”

“Missing senior Meghan Hunter due to an ACL in-jury during the 2010 season was a big blow to us, how-ever, she is ready to return and will provide a scoring punch for the for us this season. “Senior Kayla King was limited by injuries last season and should be more explosive and dominate in 2011. “Sophomore Haleigh Altenburg has shown the ability to score goals and became more comfortable

with the college game in the spring. “Sophomore Yanci Johnson came alive towards the end of last season and will be called upon to beat players on the dribble. “Sophomore Alexandria Jackson is in the top tier of athletes to have ever played at NSU in terms of overall athleticism. “If A.J can learn to use her athleticism to her ad-vantage, she will be special. “Junior has shown flashes of brilliance and if she stays healthy, she can be a factor for us as well. “One of the most pleasant surprises that came out of the spring practice was sophomore Rebecca Furlow who improved tremendously. “She has the ability to score goals and with her play, has gained the confidence of the coaching staff. “Redshirt freshmen Cassidy Browning, and true freshmen Nicola Saunders and Alex Petermann, all have the ability to step in early and play for us. “We have a great problem here. We have tough decisions to make each day on who should be starting and getting playing time at this position. “This depth will provide for great competition dur-ing the preseason and should push us to a higher level. “We are confident that we have the pieces at the forward position to be a scoring threat on our oppo-nents.”

JIMMY MITCHELLHEAD COACHGARDNER-WEBB, 1990 • 13TH SEASON AT NSU • 20TH OVERALL In 12 seasons at Northwestern State, Jimmy Mitchell has trans-formed the Demon soccer pro-gram into one that is recognized

as a serious threat every year in and out of conference play. Bringing a determined mentality to the field, Mitchell is highly regarded by his coaching peers in the Northwestern State athletic department as well as around the Southland Conference and state. In addition to being looked at for his affable demeanor, he is re-spected for the achievements of the Northwestern State soccer program under his leadership. “For the young women in the Demon soc-cer program, and for their familier, Jimmy has been a stroung and steady figure and an outstanding head coach,” said Demon director of athletics Greg Burke. “He’s a friend to everyone in our department and a sup-porter of all things Northwestern. He is relentless in his efforts to continue improving Demon soccer and his list of achievements speak for themselves.” Mitchell has taken the Lady Demons to three NCAA tournament appearance in his tenure at North-western State. This feat makes NSU the only team in Louisiana to earn three NCAA Tournament berths. The first came in 2000 after winning the Southland Confer-ence regular season and tournament titles. Conference tournament titles took the Lady Demons to the postsea-son in both 2002 and 2005. The 2000 season team that celebrated NSU’s first NCAA tournament appearance also celebrated becoming the only Louisiana team to ever reach the NCAA tournament. The same team also became the first Southland Conference team to win both regular season and tournament title. With a 15-8 overall record and 10-2 conference mark, the Lady Demons were de-feated in the NCAA tournament by Montana who went on to beat Washington in the second round. That year, the Lady Demons set the Southland Conference records for wins, conference wins, goals (56), and corner kicks in a game (19) and season (129). The 2000 team also set 19 team records and 29 other individual records. Before losing in the NCAA tourna-ment, the Demons won nine consecutive game, match-ing another school record. They also extended a home winning streak to 13 games, another school mark. The 2000 squad placed five players on the All-SLC first team and for on the All-Louisiana. Shannon

Tenney was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year. The 2001 season was plagued with injuries to several key players which caused the Lady Demons to have a losing record for the first time since Mitchell took over in 1999. In 2002, five first team All-SLC selections again came from the NCAA tournament bound Northwestern State team. The Southland Conference Player of the

Year (Katie Priest) and Freshman of the Year (Heather Penico) also came from the Lady Demons. Priest and Penico also represented NSU on the All-Lousisana first team while three other Lady Demons earned honorable mention. After posing a 12-5-5 overall record and tak-ing another Southland Conference tournament title, the 2002 Lady Demons took an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament to College Station to face Texas A&M. Mitchell led the team to a third place SLC finish in 2003 and a second place finish in 2004. The 2004 team also made an appearance in the SLC postseason tournament. In 2005, Mitchell steered the Lady Demons to their third Southland Conference tournament title and thrid trip to the NCAA Tournament. The postseason was a repeat of 2002, traveling to College Station and being defeated by Texas A&M. In 2006, the LadyDemons posted a 9-9-2 re-cord and finished fourth in the SLC. Mitchell’s squad bouncedback in 2007 with a record of 11-7-2 while play-

ing possibly the toughest schedule in school history. In the 11 wins, the Lady Demons defeated in-state rivals Centenary, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, South-eastern Louisiana, Louisiana-Lafayette, Nicholls, South-ern, and tied SLC champion McNeese State. Mitchell’s team received public recognition from the NCAA for its perfect APR of 1.000 of the multi-year rate in 2004 and 2006 and was well above the national average for the 2008-09 year. The NCAA annually rec-ognizes college sports teams from around the country that scheme an APR score in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The APR is a point system based on scholarship athletes’ eligibility and retention for a pre-determined time period. It is essentially measures how well institutions, and individual sports, are doing in ad-vancing their student-athletes toward graduation. Before coming to Natchitoches in 1999, Mitch-ell slated seven years of head coaching experience with a 73-57-3 overall record. Just one year prior to taking the reigns at NSU, Mitchell led his Belmont Abbey team to a 20-4 record and an NCAA Division II Elite Eight ap-pearance. That team was eliminated from the the NCAA field by Lynn University which went on to win the na-tional championship that season. Mitchell also served as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte from 1994-1995 when the 49ers were ranked in the nation’s top 10 first-year programs in Division I. While Mitchell can boast numerous team honors, he also has several individual honors on his shelf. He was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2002 and Louisiana Coach of the Year this same sea-sons. In 1998, he was named Coach of the Year for the Carolina-Virginia Conference after his team swept regular season and tournament titles and advance to the brink of the NCAA Final Four. He earned that same honor in 1996

when his Belmont Abbey team posted a 13-8 record from 4-12 in the 2005 season. Mitchell recieved a contract extension prior to the beginning of the 2007 season. His multi-year deal joined him with men’s basketball coach Mike McConathy as the only multi-year deal in school history. “The high level of performance athletically and academically by our women’s soccer and men’s basket-ball teams represent the ideal of what we aim for at North-western State Uniersity,” said Burke. “Mike and Jimmy are extremely dedicated, loyal, and passionate about the welfare of their student-athletes, and they are deserving of this token of appreciation from the university. The Lady Demon Soccer Complex has also un-dergone transformation with Mitchell at the helm. Lights were added to the field before the 2004 season and an im-proved playing surface was laid. New concession facili-ties and restrooms were added while new leisure areas along the fence of the playing field spruce up the en-tire complex. A new entrance area with gates is aes-thetically pleas-ing and provides handicap acces-sibility. And the lastest addition was the construc-tion of a two-lev-el, air contitioned press box in 2010. With these and other improve-ments the Demon Soccer Complex has become one of the premier soccer facilities in the region. The Mitchells have settled in Natchitoches with their beloved Boykin Spaniels: Mattie, Rusty, and Sassie. Glenda, who received her docorate degree in August of 2003, is a teacher at the Louisiana School for Math, Sci-ence, and the Arts, an academically accelerated residential high school serving some of the state’s elite young minds. The Mitchells have two sons- Brody, who was born March 13, 2006 and Cole, April 30, 2008. When he’s not coaching or cheering for other NSU teams, Coach Mitch-ell enjoys outdoor sports such as fishing and duck hunt-ing.

Darren Back returns to NSU for the second year with 11 years of coaching experience and nine years of playing experience (two college and seven in semi-pro action).

At Northwestern State, Back’s duties include being the Lady Demons’ recruiting coordina-tor as well as the goalkeeper’s caoach. In his first season Back helped the Lady Demons to an 8 win season while coaching two Southland All-Conference selections (Rachel O’Steen and Sarah Sadler) and helped Jessica Danku to a Goalkeeper of the Week award in 2010. Danku, a true freshman at the time, started in 17 of 20 games with a saves percentage of .766 with a record of 7-7 with three shutouts and contributed to three other shutouts. Before arriving on campus, Back coached for a season at Lenior-Rhyne University of the South Atlantic Conference and helped guide the team to an 8-6-4 record. He coached two-all region, three all-conference, and two NCAA All-Southeast Region players. Prior to his stint at Lenoir-Rhyne, he was the assistant director of coaching at the Catawba Valley Youth Soccer Association for a year and was the North Carolina Olympic Development Program assistant coach at that same time. His coaching stops also placed him as head coach for the Elite Soccer Academy and Golden Touch Soccer Academy. As a player, he participated in professional tournaments including the F.A. Youth Cup, F.A. Cup and F.A. Vase. Back joined the Lenoir-Rhyne men’s soccer program as a junior transfer from Derby Uni-versity in 2006. He played two seasons as a midfielder and helped anchor the midfield during the Bears’ historic 2006 season where they finished with a school record 19-1-1 mark. For his career, he scored six total goals with three of them going in as game-winners. He was named the team’s co-captain as a senior in 2007. In 2006, he helped lead the team to a South Atlan-tic Conference championship and to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament where they lost 5-3 on penalty kicks to Lincoln Memorial. A graduate of the University of Derby in England with a bachelor’s degree in sports science in 2005, Back earned his master’s degree from Lenoir-Rhyne in business administra-tion in May 2008. Back is married to the former Kristy May of Long Beach, California.

Jordan Monty is beginning her second season as a member of the NSU soccer program, serving as assistant for this year’s Lady Demons and will be working primarily with the attacking players as well as having a key role in recruiting. In her first season with the Lady Demons she coach two Southland All-confer-

ence selections in Rachel O’Steen and Sarah Sadler. She was also able to coach the first player in Northwestern State soccer history to play on a

national team (Ashlee Savona). Savona led the team in points and goals, and was second on the team in assists. Monty, a native of Mesquite, Texas, comes to NSU after serving four years on the East Tennessee State soccer squad where she was named the 2006 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year and a four-time All-Atlantic Sun player, including first team honors as a senior. She finished up her career at ETSU ranked No. 2 as the school’s all-time career goal scorer with 23. The daughter of Garry and Vickie Monty, Jordan earned her bachelor’s degree in sport management at ETSU and is pur-suing her master’s degree in sport administration at NSU. Her father was a very successful high school football coach in Texas. “She has coaching in her blood,” said head coach Jimmy

Mitchell. “I believe Jordan has a chance to be a very successful coach at the college level. The sky is the limit in her coaching career.”

Colene Bonnette returned to Northwestern State in 2007 after a two-year hiatus, and serves as the women’s soccer and men’s basketball administrative assistant. The Lake Charles native spent two years as the administrative assistant for sports information prior to accepting a job off campus. Colene is very active in the Natchitoches community, serving as a member of both the Les Amie Service Organization, where she is a sustainer, and the

Service League of Natchitoches. She enjoys scrapbooking, traveling and spending time with her family. She’s married to Matthew Bonnette, NSU’s associate sports information director, and the cou-ple has two daughters, Haley who is 11 and a sixth grader at the NSU Middle Lab School, and Katelyn, who will turned 8 in November and a second grader at the NSU-E Lab school.

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions. What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12 member uni-versities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar State College of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College), the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into its fifth decade of existence. On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as the league membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi expanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city in Texas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innumerable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage. In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists of Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the Univer-sity of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos. All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 current students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. Famous alums from Southland Conference schools include former President Lyndon B. Johnson (Texas State), former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), retired U.S. Central Command General Tommy Franks (UT Arlington), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), country music star George Strait (Texas State), Major League Baseball stars Hunter Pence (UT Arlington), Kevin Millar (Lamar) and Ben Broussard (McNeese State), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (UT Arlington). The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international business and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the New Orleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to the home of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found in the Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions also draw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, Baton Rouge, Austin, and Shreveport. The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, ten-nis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. In January 2011, the Southland Conference, in conjunction with the city of Frisco, Texas and Hunt Sports Group, played host to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in Frisco, which has been home to the conference office since 2006. The game will be played at Frisco’s Pizza Hut Park for at least the next two seasons. Frisco was named the fastest growing city in the nation in 2010. Southland Conference football ranks among the best Football Championship Subdivision leagues in the nation, and enjoys an annual expectation of competing for the national championship with multiple teams advancing to the NCAA playoffs each year. In 2002 and 2003, McNeese State finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation, and advanced to the 2002 national championship contest, the sixth such title game appearance since the league joined the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) in 1982. All told, Southland teams have played in 93 Division I playoff games in 29 years, winning 43 of the contests.

Dr. Randall J. Webb stated when he became Northwestern State University’s 17th president in July of 1996 that his primary objective would be to help make his Alma Mater the best institution it could be. It is apparent after 15 years that Webb is achieving that admirable goal. Enrollment has reached record levels

during Webb’s tenure as president and exceeded 10,500 for the first time in history in the fall of 2004. Webb has also been at the forefront in recent years of moving the university toward higher admission standards, which has resulted in some enrollment declines but in the enrollment of students with greater academic potential and aptitude. Retention has increased at the university, the average ACT score of students has gone up, and high school student leaders are enrolling in Northwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantial increase in the number of high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at the university. External funding for NSU has also increased dramatically under Webb’s leadership. In the first capital campaign in its his-tory, the university received $32.7 million to far exceed its goal of $18.84 million. That funding included the establishment of numerous endowed chairs and professorships to enhance academic programs at the university. In addition to the private funding, Northwestern has received more grant monies in recent years from state and federal agencies and private foundations than at any time since its founding in 1884. Webb has also expanded the university’s outreach by spear-heading the development at NSU of the largest electronic education and distance learning network of any university in Louisiana. NSU offers courses and degree programs to students across the nation and world through Internet and compressed video. Millions of dollars have been obtained during Webb’s presidency for new and renovated facilities. A new $6.9 million Well-ness, Recreation and Activity Center opened on the campus in 2005; and Morrison Hall, the Family and Consumer Sciences Building, and Williamson Hall have been completely renovated and restored. A new Student Services Center on the site of the former West Caspari Hall will be complete early next year. Over $32 million in construction by a private company has added two modified residence halls to the campus in recent years. Funding has also been obtained to rebuild the East Caspari Hall and replace the underground electrical distribu-tion system. Northwestern academic programs and athletic teams con-tinue to receive positive national recognition. The Computer Informa-tion Systems program, for example, won five consecutive national championships in academic competition in systems analysis, and the NSU men’s basketball team defeated Iowa in the NCAA national championship tournament. A former center on the Northwestern football team, Webb is an avid supporter of the university’s athletic programs and has held positions of leadership at the national level in intercollegiate athletics. He has served as chair of the board of directors of the Southland Con-ference and has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Executive Council and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors that oversee all major policy decisions by the governing body for major college sports. He currently serves as the Southland Conference representative on the NCAA Presidential Advisory Group. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and busi-ness education, Webb earned a master of science degree in math-

ematics from NSU in 1966. He received a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research. Webb was a member of the faculty of Longwood College in Farmville, Va, from 1966 until 1974. He served as Director of Higher Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department of Education from 1974 through 1976. He moved to Southeastern Louisi-ana University in 1976 and in 13 years there held positions as director of institutional research, EEO officer, registrar and member of the mathematics faculty. He became Dean of Instruction and Graduate Studies and professor of mathematics at Northwestern in 1989. In that position, he was responsible for campus-wide policy development, planning, advancement, and review of both graduate and undergraduate programs. While Webb was in that position, graduate enroll-ment increased by 35 percent, and internal fund-ing for faculty research increased by 200 percent. As dean, Webb proposed the concept for NSU’s successful Fresh-man Connection Program and served as a member of the writing team for a grant proposal that resulted in a five year, $1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention. He also chaired the steering committee for NSU’s Self Study for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He has been active in the community as a member of the board of directors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchi-toches, the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, the Natchitoches-North-western Symphony Society, Rotary Club, and the First Baptist Church. Webb and his wife Brenda have two daughters, both honor graduates of Northwestern. Tamara and her husband, former NSU All-America baseball pitcher Reggie Gatewood, live in McKinney, Texas, withtheir children Tyler and Ava. Lauren is married to former outstand-ing NSU baseball player Nick Simokaitis, and they live in St. Louis with their sons Nicholas and Benjamin.

Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the Northwestern State athletic program. Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but always taking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role player. Beginning his 47th year on the university’s staff, Pierce’s impact on NSU and the city of Natchitoches can’t be measured as easily

as Ripkin’s Baseball Hall of Fame statistics, but they are equally indelible. He begins his 21st year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. A significant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce works closely with athletic director Greg Burke and all NSU coaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a championship level week after week, month after month and year after year. Pierce is an avid tennis player who has been a member of USTA teams that have won more than a dozen state championships, five regional titles and one national champion-ship. Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce had already served his alma mater, adopted hometown and state with distinction. In his role as vice president, he oversees

university operations in athletics, alumni and development, public and media relations and assists President Dr. Randall J. Webb in governmental affairs activities. Many of those duties were his since the 1970s as he worked under four previous presidents as North-western advanced from NAIA to NCAA College Division to NCAA Division I athletic status in 1977.

A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for the Demon football team during his college years, working closely with legendary coach Jack Clayton. After earning his journalism degree, Pierce went to work for the New Orleans Times Picayune, serving as a reporter and editor. He was named executive sports editor at the age of 24.

In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches and returned to NSU as sports information director. He was promoted to news bureau director two years later and assumed additional responsibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and other areas through the years.

He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility in Prather Coliseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an en-tity created in 1958. He established annual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decades later, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice president forced him

to step aside from the volunteer post. He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America, 1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He is a past president of the Southland and has served the conference through other offices and committee positions. In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana’s 20 most influential sports figures by the Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Grambling football coaching legend Eddie Robinson. His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-Star Productions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and on the NSU campus. The movie’s impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to resonate more than two decades later. Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana’s higher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master of ceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Pierce is a member of the Journal-ism Department faculty. He is the author of one book and editor of two others and has written thousands of editorials, columns, features and other articles for newspapers and magazines. Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. He has two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twins Evan and Amanda, 22, and Miranda, 11, and two stepchildren, Nicholas and Natalie.

Faculty Athletic Representative, Jody Bis-coe, is associate professor of Psychology and Addiction Studies at Northwestern State, teaching in the undergraduate and graduate

programs. Since 2006, he has served as Faculty Ath-letic Representative for NSU. This role includes the chair of the NSU Athletic Council. When it comes to NSU Athletics, I believe Michael Jor-don said it best, “Talent wins games, but team work and intelligence wins championships.” For the last several years, the athletic program has been consistent in want-ing to create an environment for its student-athletes that afford them the opportunity to be winners on the field of competition and in the classroom. This is accomplished in four fundamental ways: 1) The athletic administration remains focused on the mission of providing student-ath-letes a competitive environment both academically and on the field; 2) Coaches who are committed and desire a positive team experience for their student-athletes; 3) Faculty who are committed to creating a learning envi-ronment that is conducive to all students’ academic suc-cesses; and 4) The Demon community that supports col-lege athletics is one of the most supportive and unified environments both in academics and athletics. When meeting with recruits and their parents who visit campus to decide if NSU is the place to achieve their academic and athletic goals, I provide them a few keys to success. Make sure your priorities are right, have good character, focus on academics, be competitive ath-letically, and fun. If you keep them in that order, you will be fine here at NSU. Recently, a parent asked me how we all do what we do given today’s economy and still provide a winning environment. We accomplish things, taking a phrase from the legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, ‘We have to be flexible but we don’t lose our focus.’ Our Athletic Department focus has been “Great Traditions - Brighter Futures.” Jody’s married to his wife, Veronica (Roni), an avid runner, and daughter Roxy is a senior co-captain on the varsity cheerleading squad and Lady Tiger basketball team at St. Mary’s School. All are devoted Demon fans!

Cary Bruno is the Assistant Academic Coor-dinator with oversight of the following sports: Freshman Football, softball, volleyball, men’s

track and cross country, women’s track and cross coun-try, and women’s basketball. Cary is also the Director of the Enhanced Academic Program, a program that men-tors academically underprepared student-athletes. Bruno also assists Carrie Crowell with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which is designed to assist with the transition phase of college to work. Bruno was a member of the Demon Softball team from 2005-2009. During her time at Northwestern State, her most memorable honors include the esteemed Southland Conference Steve McCarty Citizenship Award as well as being selected as the Southland Conference Softball Student Athlete of the Year in 2008.

Greg Burke

Director of Athletics At the outset of his 16th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he’s done in his adopted hometown. Burke has been athletics director at Northwestern since Aug. 29, 1996, when his first day included speaking at the annual NSU/Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon. Burke is the longest serv-ing AD at any Louisiana institution. He has steered NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing a program that has fielded championship caliber teams in nearly all of the school’s NCAA Division I sports. Last year, he was included among 29 winners of the Under Amour AD of the Year Award presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He was also among four winners chosen to be involved in a Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal panel discussion on current Division I athletics issues. Joining NSU’s Burke were Purdue’s Morgan Burke (no relation), Samford’s Bob Roller and

Lee Fowler of North Carolina State, with the transcript of their discussion distributed to national media by the Sports Business Daily. Burke just completed a term as the 2010-11 president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association. Burke’s 15 years as athletic director include 32 Southland Conference regular-season or tournament championships, 54 All-American and Academic All-American student athletes, and three U.S. Olympic competitors. Seventeen NSU teams have taken part in NCAA or WNIT postseason competition. Under his guidance, Northwestern State has led all 13 public institutions in Louisiana, and all 12 Southland Conference institutions, in the NCAA’s Academic Prog-ress Rate and Graduation Success Rate reports. The school’s athletic facilities have undergone nearly $7 million in improvements in the past four years. NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only) Southland Conference member in the league’s five decades of history to sweep football, men’s basketball and baseball championships in the same athletic year. It’s been done only once in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in 1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80. Those accomplishments have come with one of the more modest athletic budgets in the state and conference. Burke’s management skill and fundraising ability have been pivotal. Burke generated a $2 million series of sponsorships for new scoreboards installed for 2008-09 at all NSU athletic venues and spearheaded the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues. Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them to national prominence in subsequent positions. Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU. Two, basketball’s Mike McConathy and soccer’s Jimmy Mitchell, guided Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in their second seasons and have been back to postseason since. NSU’s 2006 basketball team scored one of the most memorable upsets in the history of March Madness, coming from 17 down to stun No. 15-ranked Iowa 64-63. Burke has selected head coaches who have subsequently been hired by Alabama, Florida, Missouri, New Mexico, Kentucky, Virginia, Mississippi State and Wichita State. From his first day on the job, Burke has stressed the importance of having a balanced athletic program. To that end, tremendous competitive strides have been made in women’s athletics under his guidance. The NSU soccer program was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach the NCAA Tournament and remains the only one with multiple appearances. Volleyball set attendance records and has made its best-ever showings in conference play in recent years. In softball, NSU posted the nation’s most im-proved win total in 2010 regular-season play under second-year coach Donald Pickett, and moved among league contenders in 2011. The Lady Demons joined Stanford as the only women’s tennis programs in the country in 2010 with only one regular-season loss, while sweeping Southland regular-season and tournament titles and making a first-ever NCAA Team Tournament appearance. While on-field success by Demon and Lady Demon teams has been a source of pride for NSU supporters, Burke is equally proud of the tone which has been set within the NSU athletic program as it relates to academic achievement and community service. The academic accomplishments are reflected annually in the NCAA’s APR and GSR studies. Community service by NSU student-athletes, coaches and staff more than doubled to over 5,000 hours in 2009-10 and remained at that level in 2010-11. Burke spearheaded the adoption of the slogan “Great Tradition, Brighter Future” for NSU Athletics, and the creation of NSU Athletics “Cornerstones” for student-athletes: “Academic Achievement, Personal Responsibility, Competitive Success … Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Day!” In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America Football Foundation’s Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award and that same year, was also tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakers of 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper’s editorial staff. He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater, Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community service and professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni honored since the award was instituted in 1982. In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans, addressing members of the College Athletic Business Managers of America and also participating in a panel discussion of “Fundraising from an Athletic Director’s Perspective” speaking to the National Association of Athletic Development Direc-tors. Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Championships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel which makes recommendations to the NCAA Board of Directors on key issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and concurrently served a term on the eight-member NCAA FCS Committee that admin-isters the national playoffs.

At the outset of his 16th year as director of athletics at Northwestern State, Greg Burke has received national acclaim for the job he’s done in his adopted hometown.

Since his committee term expired, Burke has served as a site supervisor for Football Championship Subdivision playoff games across the nation and he is regarded as one of the country’s premiere advocates of FCS football. In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rating, “fully certified,” from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirming that Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformity with operating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership.
