CHUCK: Ladies and gentlemen, the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival is

proud to bring you an original Arabian Nights tale – Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Banou.

Mystery, enchantment, thrills, suspense, romance! The 2011 Musical Pageant will

begin in just ____ minutes. At this time, we ask the concessions and attractions near

the Pageant Stage and Casbah Area to please dim their lights and turn down their

sounds for the duration of our performance. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

We also take this time to let our audience know that strobe lighting effects are used in

this production. Thank you, and enjoy the show!


Ensemble humans cross audience concrete

apron in caravan style carrying baskets in two MUSIC NOTE: Opening Instrumental Procession Music

groups SL to SR and SR to SL with ensemble

dancers weaving between them until they

hit the center apron. Ensemble humans

continue cross as dancers remain for brief

routine. On stage, human and enchanted

dancers perform separate routine with humans

not “seeing” enchanteds. Other enchanteds –

featured singers and featured players move

around stage as well preparing to sing and act

out the Scheherazade back story. MUSIC NOTE: SCHEHERAZADE NIGHTS (Tune of Arabian Nights from Aladdin)

At beginning of story music, featured singers are

positioned on palace stairs as featured players

take positions to relay the story in pantomime.

FPs are enchanteds dressed to mimic humans

using simple costume pieces and props.

Scheherazade enters from SL to SC in overly

regal manner. Looks on in increasing emotion

as story unfolds before her.

FEATURED SINGERS - ALL:

They tease and excite

Go off and take flight

They shock and amaze

Neath Arabian moons

Scheherazade speaks

Of Sultans and sheiks

Of geeks and of goons


Gather round, here a tale

Of a queen who regaled

And her name was Scheherazade

How she came to be queen

Is a sight to be seen …

Or heard, anyway it’s odd

On palace balcony platform (SR), Sultan and wife

are lovey-dovey but she moves to side and flirts

with someone on stage as tattletale spots her

and tells the Sultan to look. He is furious and

snaps for the executioner who grabs the wife

and drags her off to the pit stairs wielding his

axe.

FEATURED SINGER – Michelle Bachman:

Seems the sultan’s first bride Had someone on the side

And her secret was not kept tight

When the sultan was told

Well his anger took hold

And he had her beheaded that night

Sultan moves behind to T carrying the crown he

takes from first wife as she is dragged away. He

is distraught looking at crown and next womentil he finally gives in and puts the crown on her,

kisses her, calls for executioner, and grabs the

crown as executioner drags them down stairs

wielding axe. Scheherazade is appalled center

stage.

FEATURED SINGER – Maricela Cardenas:

Sultan wanted a bride

But as hard as he triedHe had issues with trust – who knew!

So he’d marry each day

And before each could stray

She would find herself dead – it’s true!

Vizier walks up ramp with line of potential

brides who, one by one, have the crown put on

their head, kiss Sultan and are dragged down

the stairs. Scheherazade gets idea, dons a bridalmask and runs off to the pit ramp via SL ramp

underneath. As chorus happens, players duck

into pit momentarily.

FEATURED SINGER – Alexis Safoyan:

More and more women died

To appease Sultan’s pride

Scheherazade did not like this trend

Though it could mean her life

She’d be sultan’s next wife

And would force all the killing to end

Dancers (both sets?) take the stage in

choreographed movement. Maybe enchanted

dancers shadow the others?

Scheherazade speaks



As the story resumes, Sultan comes back up and

a crown pops up from the pit from the last bride

killed. The next bride is married and killed while

Scheherazade pushes her way to the front of the

line to speak to her father.

FEATURED SINGER – Shantee Lands:

Just to save his own life

Vizier found each new wife

Though he knew all too well their fate

Just imagine his fear

When his daughter, the dear

Scheherazade stepped to the plate

Scheherazade and her father argue until he

relents and lets Scheherazade marry the Sultan

FEATURED SINGER – Summer Prim:

Though he laid down the lawIt did not help at all

She insisted she had a plan

So he finally gave in

Though it was with chagrin

He agreed she could marry that man

Scheherazade gets married and is about to be

dragged off when she has the light bulb moment

and begs for just a second.

FEATURED SINGER – Marlene Zarata:

With the wedding night through

What’s a new bride to do If she wanted to keep her head

She must think of a way

To live through each new day

With sultan not wanting her dead

She starts telling a story motioning to the stage

as players take the stage running across like one

is chasing many. Just as the villain reaches the

others and is about to swing a sword,

Scheherazade stops (the players freeze). Sultanfrantically tries to get her to go on but she just

yawns and looks at her wrist (watch). They go

to palace balcony.

FEATURED SINGER – Juliann Namson:

What Scheherazade did

Was to spin a great tale

That she would not complete that night

But she promised that more

Would be worth waiting for

And the sultan agreed she was right

Scheherazade and Sultan are on the balcony as

she is telling the stories out on the stage as

players come in sequence to direct center to

create a quick action and move to a side.

Oh, each night after night

She’d intrigue and delight

With adventures beyond the pale

With suspense and romance

Mixed with fun and some chance

There’s no way that her plan could fail

Continue stepping into center spotlight one at a

time and moving off

until in a tableau to finish the song with the

singers

Players leave the stage, singers remain on stairs

They’re the stories we love

Now known as the tales of

ENCHANTED 1: Where is she? Scheherazade should be done telling tonight’s story by now!

ENCHANTED 2: I can’t stand the wait. I need to hear how last night’s story ends.

ENCHANTED 3: Yeah, and what the next story is.

Noor-Jehuan comes flying out of palace SL door

and down stairs to stage excitedly. ALL: Finally!

Moving down the stairs toward Noor-JehuanENCHANTED 4: What’d ya find out?

Banou enters from SL Arch – aloof but obviously

curious herself – she stays off to side NOOR-JEHUAN: Oh it is reaaally good.

Also moving down toward Noor-JehuanENCHANTED 1: So, is you-know-who in the whole story.

NOOR-JEHUAN: Oh, yeah. She’s the staaarrr!

Banou preens and enters as though she has no

idea what is going on. The rest come down and ENCHANTED 2: Speaking of you-know-who – here she comes.

disinterest NOOR-JEHUAN: Hello, Banou

Playing boredBANOU: Hello, Noor-Jehuan, I suppose your back with another one of Scheherazade’s brilliant

stories. Whomever, er whatever could it be about?

ExasperatedENCHANTEDS: You, of course, Banou.

BANOU: Really. Tell us all about it.

Getting excited again.

They all exit SL Ramp to blind enchanted domain

entrance to get in place for Scene 3.

NOOR-JEHUAN: Well, as always, it picks up where she left off last – right after Zaman’s wedding

where the three princes of Arabia were talking of marriage to princess Nouri of India. . . .




SCENE ONE – AUDIENCE APRON, MAIN STAGE AND PALACE STAIRS

Real actors for this year start to enter the stage

as it transforms to the story in real time. MUSIC NOTE: Transition to Market music

Sultan, Sultana, Princes, Nouri, Grand Vizier and

Council members enter Palace Balcony as

Ensemble humans become crowd outside

SULTAN: So, it is settled. As my sons are otherwise equally suitable – and equally eager – to be

the husband of the beautiful Princess Nouri of India, they will compete for her hand.

SULTANA: Oh, I know. Why don’t they each go off to different parts of the world in search of

treasures that reflect their infinite love and devotion for Princess Nouri. They could go for a

year and whoever returns with the rarest item most worthy of giving the Princess shall win the

contest and her hand in marriage.

Awkward Silence by allSOUND CUE: Cricket Sounds

SULTAN: Uhh, yes, thank you dear. Let’s leave this type of thing to the men.

SULTANA: Yeah, left up to you, you would probably just have an archery contest.

ALL MEN: YEAH!

SULTAN: Prepare for the archery contest.

SULTANA AND ALL WOMEN: Oh, brother!




SCENE TWO – ENCHANTED DOMAIN

Fairies are “seeing” into the world of the

humans (i.e., looking off into audience) ENCHANTED 5: Look what the human’s are doing now!

ENCHANTED 6: It’s a contest of some sort.

NOOR-JEHUAN: Banou, isn’t that one the human that you were flirting with at Zaman’s

wedding?

Pretending indifferenceBANOU: Oh, that was so long ago, I’m sure I don’t remember.

ENCHANTED 7: Sure you do, you told me that you were going to marr. . .

In a reprimanding manner

Collecting herself and becoming indifferent and

calm again.

BANOU: I said, I don’t remember.

And why would I care.

NOOR-JEHUAN: Because if your human wins the contest, he will marry the Princess and not you.

BANOU: I’m sure that . . . umm, fate . . . will make sure the right thing happens.

Under breathNOOR-JEHUAN: Yeah, fate - - - right!




SCENE THREE – MAIN STAGE, DOMAIN OF THE ENCHANTED, AUDIENCE

Sultan, Sultana, Grand Vizier and Council on

stairs in typical pattern. Hassan, Ali and Ahmed

line up USR; Nouri on curved SC palace landing

SULTAN: Remember, whoever shoots his arrow the furthest shall have the honor of marrying

the beautiful Princess Nouri. Good Luck!

PRINCE HASSAN: Luck, this is going to take more than luck to make sure I win.

MUSIC NOTE: CUPID

PRINCE HASSAN:

Now I don't mean to bother you but I'm in a mess

There's danger of me losing all of my happiness

To marry Princess Nouri that is why I exist

And this you can fix

Hassan draws arrow and shoots as this piece is

being sung. Arrow falls far short

Dancers do something to reflect flying arrow.

Hand motion, Chinese yo-yo, dowel streamers?

CHORUS:

Oh, Cupid draw back his bow

And let his arrow go

Straight to his lover's heart for him.

Ali steps up to shoot nextPRINCE ALI:

SULTAN: It is humanly impossible to shoot the arrow that far.

SCOUT3: Well, then it seems to have vanished.

PRINCESS NOURI: So who is the winner?

COUNCIL #1: We all know that we saw Ahmed’s arrow go farther than the others.

SULTAN: My good Vizier. As you are the keeper of the laws of this kingdom, I will let you decide

this matter as you deem most appropriate and fitting.

VIZIER: Well, your majesty. As you know, much of the law is a matter of proof. As we do not

have any proof with regards to where Ahmed’s arrow actually went, I believe that the right

thing to do is to deem his arrow disqualified and declare Ali the winner.

SULTAN: So be it! Ali shall marry Princess Nouri.

Crowd disperses. CROWD: Yeah!

Ali helps Nouri down and they stroll downcenter stage to top of T PRINCE ALI: Really!? But I thought you couldn’t decide which of us you wanted to marry.

PRINCESS NOURI: No, my father refused to let my choice be known. He was afraid of offending

your father and insisted that the decision be made by a contest.

PRINCE ALI: So I guess Cupid really did step in to help.

PRINCESS NOURI: He may have helped with the arrow, the rest is up to you.

PRINCE ALI: So what did you have in mind?

arrow stops on T facing audience. PRINCE AHMED: I don’t understand where that arrow could have gone. As good an archer as I

am, it is beyond imagination to think that even I could have shot this far. I suppose fate hadother plans for me.

Banou pops out from SL ramp and pulls arrow

comically from bra and places it down stage. BANOU: (whistle or other alerting sound)

Ahmed sees something on the ground and goes

to it. Picks up the arrow and faces audience PRINCE AHMED: What? This is my arrow. But how did it get here?

Banou creates the enchanted opening which

moves into place – she enters it as Ahmed sees LIGHT CUE: ENCHANTED OPENING LIGHTED

it and enters into the Domain of the Enchanted

and looks around in awe at the beauty An enchanted opening? This wasn’t here a moment ago. There must be a reason I was led here

– let’s find out!

PRINCE AHMED: What is this magical place?

Banou comes behind him – startles himBANOU: This is the domain of the enchanted. Home to fairies, genies, and mythical creatures of

all kinds. I am Queen of the fairies, Perie Banou. But you may call me Banou.

PRINCE AHMED: Sorry to intrude, the door was . . . wait, I know you. You were the one across

the room at Zaman’s wedding.

BANOU: You do remember. I knew you would come looking for me and choose me for yourown without any interference.

refusing to get married until Ahmed is found and both he and Hassan are happily betrothed.

And then there is her.

What is a Sultan to do?

GRAND VIZIER: If I might be so bold to suggest. Perhaps the royal sorceress might lend a hand

with respect to Ahmed’s whereabouts.

SULTAN: I suppose that would be a start.

Sorceress enters without being called singingher musical signature song SOUND AND MUSIC NOTE: Crash/Bang followed by ONJ Magic underscore

Sarafina enters SR Ramp to DSC as she sings SORCERESS SARAFINA:

few months?

PRINCE AHMED: No, it’s not that at all! I love you more than anyone has ever loved!

BANOU: Is there someplace else you’d rather be than with me?

PRINCE AHMED: No, it’s just that I can’t help thinking of how worried my parents must be since I

just disappeared. And, I miss them.

BANOU: So you would rather be with them than here?

PRINCE AHMED: That’s not what I’m saying, but I wouldn’t mind visiting them and letting them

know that I am alright.

BANOU:But what if you go and find you don’t want to come back?

PRINCE AHMED: That could never happen – I love you more each day that I am with you.

BANOU: You say that now, but how do I know that won’t change?

where my arrow might have landed; I even reached the foothills of Agrabah before I had

decided to give up my quest.

Richard pulls out arrow and shows it to crowd.

PRINCE AHMED: As I said, I was giving up my search – after all, it would have been humanlyimpossible for my arrow to have reached that far, let alone farther – when suddenly I caught a

glimpse of something shiny in the brush below Casbah Crag. As I went to investigate, I was

awestruck to find my arrow.

Nouri runs to Ali – they embrace PRINCE ALI: So I suppose you are the true winner of the contest after all.

PRINCE AHMED: No, that is not why I came back and it is not what I desire. You won the contest

fairly brother and it is you who belongs with Princess Nouri.

Runs to hug Ahmed PRINCESS NOURI: Oh, Thank You Ahmed!

Looking suspiciously at Ahmed’s entourage GRAND VIZIER: Certainly it didn’t take you all these months to find your arrow and return here.

Whatever else could have occupied you so.

Ignoring Vizier’s insinuation and speaking

directly to his parents PRINCE AHMED: Father, I beg you to understand that I now know that the mystery of my

arrow’s disappearance was merely fate interceding to my advantage. It led me to my true love;

though I humbly ask that you let the specifics of what happened to me remain a mystery. Do

not be offended at my silence; just know that I am happy and content with my fate. The only

thing that has weighed heavily on my mind is that I knew my family would be worried about

what became of me. Letting you know that I am fine is the reason for this visit.

SULTANA: Visit? You are not here to stay?

PRINCE AHMED: No, mother, destiny has created a new place for me. But with your leave I will

come occasionally to visit.

SULTAN: Son, I will honor your desire to remain silent as I am presently content that you are

happy and that I shall see you from time to time. Now go – you and your traveling companions

should rest and prepare yourselves for a welcome feast this night.

With brothers, Nouri and Nouri’s parents; crowd

disperses leaving Sultan, Sultana, Vizier, Council GRAND VIZIER: Sire, surely you are not leaving the matter as it stands?

SULTAN: The matter?

GRAND VIZIER: The issue of where Ahmed has been and what he has been doing for months?

COUNCIL MEMBER #1: And why he is dressed in even finer clothing than he ever wore here?

COUNCIL MEMBER #2: And what’s up with that entourage?

SULTANA: Are you implying that our son is not to be trusted?

COUNCIL MEMBER #1: We would never say that . . .

GRAND VIZIER: But a man in your position must be vigilant in your caution. Ahmed’s

appearance and entourage certainly suggest that he is risen far in stature and power since he

left. Could his ambitions have risen as well?

GRAND VIZIER: Your majesty, if I might make a suggestion to ease our concerns?

perhaps wisdom dictates that we know more than Ahmed is prepared to tell. To this end, I

GRAND VIZIER: Technically, you promised not to make him tell anything; it is the Sorceress that

will be prying.

SULTANA: That is a distinction without a difference.

ReluctantlySULTAN: Very well, have the Sorceress do her thing.

Council Members exit Castle SL GRAND VIZIER: Go explain to Sarafina what we want from her and have her make a plan.

Sorceress enters from pit ramp toward Casbah

Crag where Ahmed found his arrow SORCERESS SARAFINA: Ah, there it is – Casbah Crag. This place must hold the key to where

Ahmed goes. I see nothing obvious, but as a Sorceress I know that obvious is not always the

necessary test. It is about time for Ahmed to return to visit his father once again. I will wait and

see if I can tell where he comes from.

Inside Domain of Enchantment, Ahmed is

preparing to return to his father BANOU: As always, I will miss you while you are away. Enjoy your time with your family, but

hurry back to me.

PRINCE AHMED: I am never far from here even when I am away for you keep my heart safe with

yours.

BANOU: Speaking of safe, take care in your travels today, I have an uneasy feeling that

something is amiss.

They kiss and Ahmed exits with entourage PRINCE AHMED: Banou, you worry too much.

As the enchanted entrance opens, Sorceress

stirs into action and lies in brush DSL feigning ill. SORCERESS SARAFINA: (groans)

Ahmed rushes to help SarafinaPRINCE AHMED: What troubles you good woman? Are you hurt? Ill?

SORCERESS SARAFINA: I was traveling to the village and was overtaken with fever and pains so

that I could go no further than I sit.

PRINCE AHMED: How may I help? Can we get you to the village?

SORCERESS SARAFINA: You are kind, but I fear that I cannot last that journey even if carried. But

do not concern yourself with the problems of an old woman, if it is my lot to perish here, it is

something I must accept.

Richard tries to help her but is hopelessly weak;

others readily grab her and carry her into

enchanted opening.

PRINCE AHMED: Well, I need not accept it on your behalf. There is help even closer than you

imagine. Allow my aides and I to escort you to where you may find comfort and be alleviated of

your pains.

As he gets into the domain stairs.

They enter – Banou is waiting – knowingly.

PRINCE AHMED: Do not be alarmed at what you will see within, though it is beyond what you

may have conceived in your wildest imagination, you shall be in no danger.

BANOU: I see my worries were not entirely ill-founded.

PRINCE AHMED: What’s that my love?

BANOU: Oh, nothing.

PRINCE AHMED: This woman is ill and needs . . .

SORCERESS SARAFINA: Ahmed is living in the Domain of the Enchanted where fairies, pixies,

elves, genies, wizards and witches, and mystical creatures of all sorts reside. And, Ahmed’s

“true love” is none other than the Queen of the Fairies, Perie Banou.

Forgetting herself and going into mother mode.SULTANA: Is she nice?

Following wife’s lead SULTAN: Is she rich?

SULTANA: Is she pretty?

GRAND VIZIER: I think you are missing the point. Can’t you see what this means?

SULTAN AND SULTANA: Um, nope!

GRAND VIZIER: Ahmed is even more powerful than we feared. If he has all that magic at his

disposal, what happens if he uses it against you.

SULTANA: Ahmed would never do that!

GRAND VIZIER: So you think. We must find a way to know for sure where his true allegiance

lies.

SORCERESS SARAFINA: If I might interject a possible test?

SULTAN: What kind of test?

Banou. If he refuses, the fear that Ahmed may be plotting something might be justified. If he

agrees but Banou refuses to help, she might kick him out or he might leave her. In either event,you might win your son back and will know that his allegiance remains with you.

GRAND VIZIER: What if he agrees . . .

COUNCIL MEMBER #2: . . . and succeeds?

SORCERESS SARAFINA: Ah, that means that you will see firsthand the type of power he has at his

disposal and we must create increasingly difficult challenges in order to gauge the full extent of

his new power and whether his allegiance has limits.

SULTAN: What do you propose as a first challenge?

seemed anxious and pre-occupied. What happened while you were there?

PRINCE AHMED: I have not been able to bring myself to talk of it because it involves a request

that my father has made.

FearfulBANOU: He wants you to stay in his kingdom and no longer return to me?

PRINCE AHMED: No, it’s not tha. . . .

BANOU: He wants to you go off and fight in battle where you may be lost to me forever?

PRINCE AHMED: No, he . . .

BANOU: He has found you another bride and is pushing you to marry her?

PRINCE AHMED: No, he wants me to bring him an apple!

BANOU: Huh! Has he no apples in his kingdom?

PRINCE AHMED: No, I mean, yes he has apples, but he wants a special apple.

BANOU: The old woman! Would this special apple have healing powers?

PRINCE AHMED: Yes, how did you know?

BANOU: My dear Ahmed, remember that old woman who was sick that you brought to me?

PRINCE AHMED: Yes.

PRINCE AHMED: Yes.

BANOU: Your father’s request confirms what I had suspected. That woman was not ill and, in

fact, was sent here to find out where you go when you leave your father. She is the Royal

Sorceress of your father’s kingdom. The apple that your father requests is the very same apple

that was used to “heal” her sickness.

PRINCE AHMED: I can’t believe my father would do such a thing. I have been tricked and will

not honor his request.

BANOU: Do not be angry with your father. I am sure that his motive is love for you and makingsure that you are all right. Everything else is just bad advice from his council.

PRINCE AHMED: So what should I do?

Knowing nod to Noor-Jehuan to get apple BANOU: You love me – I know this. And I love you. Trust me when I say that there is nothing

that I cannot and would not do for you – or your father.

SULTAN: Perhaps he cannot satisfy the request after all.

COUNCIL MEMBER #1: Although, if they refused his request outright and kicked him out, he

would have returned already.

COUNCIL MEMBER #2: Unless he’s too embarrassed to come back.

GRAND VIZIER: Or the request has angered the enchanted creatures and they are preparing a

battle against us as I feared.

SULTANA: What if it angered them and Ahmed has met a terrible fate as a result. My poor baby,Ahmed.

Comforting herSULTAN: There, there, I’m sure Ahmed is fine and will return shortly.

SORCERESS SARAFINA: I predict that the Sultan is correct and that Ahmed will return with the

apple. In that case, we must be prepared to test the limits of the fairies’ powers and Ahmed’s

allegiance by asking for something even more fantastical.

SULTAN: What did you have in mind?

Ahmed walks in (from balcony entrance not

from patio) at that moment with the apple. SORCERESS SARAFINA: Well, . . . .

She smothers him with kisses SULTANA: Ahmed, you’re back!

Squirming and breaking away.

He is asking the Sultan but looking directly at the

Vizier and the council.

PRINCE AHMED: Ah, there you are father! Here is the healing apple given to you by the

generosity of my beloved Banou, Queen of the Fairies. Is there more you desire?

Council squirm as Sorceress whispers in Sultan’s

ear. All try to hear her EF Hutton style. SULTAN: What? That can’t possibly exist.

SORCERESS SARAFINA: That is the point!

PRINCE AHMED: What is it father? Ask me anything.

Cautiously describes creature keeping eye

contact with Sorceress to ensure he is getting it

right. She reassures and leads him ala charades

SULTAN: We would like you to bring us a troll-like creature of great strength to help us in

battles. The creature should have long arms with a hammer for one hand and long claws for the

other and have feet made of stone with horns protruding from the toes and a long tail and

snakes growing out of her body at the head and chest. Oh, and an 8” mole on her cheek with a

long braided hair extending from its tip.

Dumbfounded

Ahmed steps away and others start to examinethe apple when he turns back to confirm

PRINCE AHMED: I’ll do my best!?

just told Banou of the latest request. PRINCE AHMED: I know, it sounds ridiculous, but that’s what they asked for. If it is too much, I’ll

understand.

Banou is amused and is devising a way to use

this request to teach them a lesson. BANOU: Oh, it is not too much, I assure you. I know of one whose looks and demeanor can

match those that you have described and would willingly accompany you to your father’s house.

PRINCE AHMED: Really!?

BANOU: Yes, but I must warn you that such a character would react very badly to ridicule of any

kind by anyone. Your father and all others must be advised of this beforehand.

PRINCE AHMED: I will make sure of that, though I trust that they will behave since they made

the request in the first place. Hopefully, this request will finally satisfy their curiosity and will bethe last.

BANOU: Oh, I’m fairly certain it will be the last request they dare make.
