To address this need, the peak national industry body,

the Australian Security Industry Association (ASIAL) has

established the Security Industry Leadership Program 2011.

Designed specifically for managers and business owners in

the security industry, the program will focus on developing

the skills of the industry’s future leaders. Featuring an

exceptional teaching faculty, the three-day program will

provide practical and interactive insights into the key

factors to successfully managing and growing a security

business.

The program will focus on developing practical skills that

you can apply at a personal, business and national industry

level. These include an understanding of how to:

> communicate effectively

> develop high performance teams

> drive change

> brand and differentiate the product or service you offer

> manage conflict

> identify the key elements that the underpin the

financial health of your business

> use key principles of financial management to make

effective business decisions

You will also be exposed to the diversity of the security

industry and some of the issues facing the industry.

The strategic goals of the program are to strengthen

succession management and to provide practical learning

opportunities for future leaders in the industry.

Who should participate?

The program has been tailored to meet the needs of

managers in medium-large security organisations. If you

have a passion for the security industry and want to make

a difference, then this program is for you. Participants will

be drawn from all sectors of the industry regardless of your

length of time and experience in the industry.

The private security industry is a dynamic and

rapidly growing sector of the Australian economy.

With annual revenues of about $6 billion and over

150,000 employees the security industry is constantly

evolving and growing. As it grows, one of the key

challenges facing the industry is attracting and

developing its future leaders.

Summary: Strategy and marketing will look at the skills

needed to position yourself successfully in a changing

environment by understanding and satisfying the

current and future needs of your customers against a

complex competitive environment.

Topic areas covered include:

Introduction to strategy:

> Examining the change agenda, and introducing the concept of corporate

strategy.

Analytical tools

> Introducing and applying some analytical tools - SWOT, PESTEL, Porter’s 5

Forces, McKinsey 7S and others

Competitive Analysis:

> Provides a framework for analysing competitors. Includes reference to the

strategic importance of Game theory.

Cultural Analysis:

> Although not obviously a topic associated with strategy, one of the key

reasons for the failure of implementation of strategy is the mismatch

between the strategy and the culture in which it is executed. This session

looks at corporate culture and uses the cultural web as a tool to audit

culture.

Segmentation targeting and positioning:

> The marketing “trifecta”. This session looks at the rationale behind market

segmentation and possible means by which the security industry might

segment its customers. It then explores the nature of positioning

> Looks at the rationale of pricing

Branding

> Explores the importance of the corporate brand and how companies

manage their brand equity.

Summary: Finance is the lifeblood of any business. An understanding of cashflow and the financial levers behind it is central to all managers success. This session will explore the key elements of finance, giving participants a series of tools to understand the financial health of their business

Introduction: Finance for Managers

> Overview of the program. Why business managers need to keep the accountants honest and

know something of accounting.

Understanding the Accounting Concepts

> Accounting as a measurement system to assist business managers. Understanding the

matching concept and accrual accounting, assets versus expenses, profit versus cash. Why

you, as a manager need to understand these differences.

> Overview of the major accounting statements: Balance Sheet; Income Statement; Statement

of Cash Flows.

How You Are Performing

> Review of companies. Analysis of the annual report, ratios, trends, comparison to the

industry and the general market. Making comparisons. KPI’s and drivers. Looking at sample

financial reports from ASIAL member companies.

Frameworks for Improvement

> Du Pont Analysis as a simple framework to improve returns on investment. How to use it to

focus actions.

Logical Decisions

> Understanding fixed and variable costs. Logical decisions and break-even analysis. Should

we open a new territory, should we take on an extra staff member or client and so on.

Summary: The ability to lead and manage people effectively is a key skill for all managers and an important predictor for a successful managerial career. This session will look at core techniques for effectively managing and leading people and give participants the opportunity to practice their skills via a range of interactive and challenging activities. Participants will have the opportunity to lead and manage each other during the activities and get feedback on their performance from their peers as well as the session leader.

Chris Clark is a strategist, who teaches

corporate strategy and strategic

marketing at Macquarie University,

including fifteen years teaching on

the MBA program of the Macquarie

Graduate School of Management,

where he was until 2006 the Director

of Corporate and Executive Education.

From 2002-2004 he was director

of the MBA program. He is also a

consultant to some of Australia’s

leading companies, across a wide

range of industries, who draw on his

presentation, problem solving and

facilitation skills.

He has been an academic and

consultant since the early 1990’s. Prior

to this he held senior senior marketing

positions with Canon Australia and

Fisons Pharmaceuticals. He was

originally a practising veterinarian.

Raised and educated in Sydney and

the UK, he holds a B.V.Sc from Sydney

University (1979), an MBA an MA

(Management Research Methods) and

a PhD from Macquarie (on the success

factors of strategic retreats)

Graham Godbee has been a lecturer

in finance at Macquarie University

Graduate School of Management and

remains Visiting Fellow in the Centre

for Money, Banking and Finance at

Macquarie University

He has held executive management

positions in large corporates in the

roles of business development,

marketing and finance.

Graham has been a director of several

companies in Australia and overseas,

including Australian Print Group, one

of the largest printers in Australia.

He is currently running programs he

designed for financial institutions such

as Capital Finance, Commonwealth

Bank, ANZ National Bank and ING and

Westpac on understanding companies,

their management and boards.

In the past few years, he has facilitated

workshops and conducted work with

boards and senior management for

a number of companies, including

Dairy Farmers, MMI, Graincorp,

Amalgamated Holdings, MunichRe,

Thomsons Publishing, Dyno-Nobel,

Chartered Secretaries Association,

Australian Jockey Club, Newcastle

Jockey Club, Inchcape, CSR and ING.

For many of these clients the focus

has been on achieving new sources

of revenue, how to achieve stretch

targets in sales and the launch of new

products and services.

Graham has a Bachelor of Arts

(Economics), Diploma of Education,

Master of Business Administration

and PhD (on organisational distress

and renewal).

Associate Professor Peter McGraw is

Director of the Labour-Management

Studies Foundation and a faculty

member in the Department of

Business, Faculty of Business and

Economics at Macquarie University.

He teaches and researches in the

broad area of managing people and

runs executive education programs

on leadership, change management

and negotiation. Peter was a faculty

member at Macquarie Graduate

School of Management for 13 years

where he taught on the MBA program

and was Director of Executive

Education. He has also worked as

an academic at the University of

Technology, Sydney and in employee

relations roles in Australia and the

United Kingdom.

Peter has almost 30 years of

experience as an academic, consultant

and corporate educator. He has

published around 40 peer reviewed

academic articles, co-authored

several books and written numerous

book chapters, reports and conference

papers. Throughout his career, he has

been consistently ranked as a top

teacher and has won a Macquarie

University Outstanding Teacher

Award. He is also very well known as

a corporate educator and has worked

with over fifty of Australia’s best

known companies as well as a range of

international, public sector and non-

profit organisations. Recent clients

have included: Allied Mills, Graincorp,

Pfizer, Qantas, Reserve Bank of

Australia, Toll Holdings and Veolia.

Peter has an undergraduate degree

from Leicester and an M.A. from

Warwick Universities in the UK. He

is currently completing his PhD at

Macquarie
