Mayor welcomes all visitors As the mayor of Columbus, I would like to extend to you our

warmest welcome on behalf of the city and its citizens. Spring

is a delightful time of the year here in Mississippi, and the new

season provides the perfect backdrop for our citys Pilgrimage

and the visitors it brings.Columbus rich history is alive year-round, reflected in our

numerous antebellum homes that attract thousands of visitors

each year. While you are with us at this time, I also invite you

to meander our tree-lined streets, enjoy our historic downtown

and explore the many recreational opportunities we have to

    offer.

We are home to Mississippi University for Women - with

an historic campus worthy of note itself - that offers an

unparalleled education at a tremendous value.

Columbus has been chosen and featured as one of the Dozen Distinctive

Destinations in the United States and is proud to be the home of Columbus Air Force

Base, which has the distinction of training one third of our nations Air Force Pilots.

We are experiencing tremendous economic growth. Columbus is a city that preserves

its past and promotes its future.I invite you to enjoy your stay in our city and urge you to allow us the opportunity to

earn our distinction as the Friendly City.

    Robert Smith

Pilgrimage continues historicpreservation in 71st year As director of the

    Columbus Spring

    Pilgrimage it is

    my privilege to

    welcome you

    to our beautiful

    town. We

    really have been

    anticipating your

    visit.

    For more than

    17 years the

    Columbus Pilgrimage to homes, gardens,

and churches has been named one of the

    Southeast Tourism Societys Top 20

    Events. This designation would have

    been impossible without the homeowners,

the volunteers and supporters of the

    Columbus Cultural Heritage Foundation,

    the Columbus-Lowndes Convention

and Visitors Bureau and Mayor Robert

Smith and the employees of the city

of Columbus. We are proud to have

been recognized among the top tourismevents scheduled around the Southeast,

said Nancy Carpenter. Also, our recent

designation as one of Dozen Distinctive

Destination by the National Trust for

Historic Preservation was made in part

    because of the historic preservation

    by the homeowners, the downtown

businesses and the preservation of the

    Tennessee Williams Home which serves

as our Welcome Center. The National

    Landmark properties, Waverley and

Riverview, three designated historicdistricts, significant African-American

    Heritage sites, the Riverwalk, the

    Tombigbee River and Mississippi

    University for Women also contributed

    to this award. Columbus impressive

    collection of historic homes includes

an example of virtually every Southern

    architectural style from the mid-1800s

to the mid-1900s. We are prepared to

showcase our city during our Pilgrimage

    event, Carpenter added.

    Columbus takes great pleasure in

hosting visitors from around the world.

We offer a true taste of Southern

hospitality, and invite our guests to returnoften, she said.

    Nancy Carpenter

The Spring Pilgrimage in Columbus is not only

an outstanding way to remember our past but an

opportunity to show off one of our most beautiful

Mississippi communities. And as an economic

development tool, the Pilgrimage brings thousands

of tourists to Columbus and northeast Mississippi,

who stay in hotels, eat in local restaurants and shop

at our unique stores. It is truly an excellent event

that promotes our state and heritage.
