Head Coach

Head Coach Gary Rundles brings 34 years of coaching experience into a Tiger program that carries high expectations into every season.

A year ago, the UWA skipper led the Red and White to a 26-17 mark, and his squad had five of its members land on the All-Gulf South Conference Team.

The 2009 campaign saw Rundles guide the Tigers to a 38-16 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II South Regional along with a conference tournament appearance. The berths marked the sixth GSC tournament appearance and the fourth regional bid for UWA while under the direction of the Chatta-nooga, Tenn. native.

In 2008, Rundles directed UWA to a 45-13 record, a berth in the GSC Baseball Tournament and an appearance in the NCAA South Central Regional in Cleveland, Miss. The 45 wins tied the school record set in 2005. Under Rundles guidance, a GSC- and school-record 12 Tigers were named to the All-GSC teams. UWA also had two All-Americans and three all-region players.

In 2007, Rundles led the Red and White to the Gulf South Conference East Division crown and a berth in the GSC Baseball Tournament. The Tigers compiled a 41-16 record and earned a spot in the GSC Tournament Championship Game. Un-der his mentorship, seven Tigers were named All-GSC with one named to the All-South Central Region Team. In 2006, Rundles guided the Tigers to a 42-22 record, including a runner-up fin-ish in the GSC Tournament and a berth in the South Central Regional.

From his beginnings as a coach and teacher of the game at Central High School in Harrison, Tenn., to his current status as one of the most well-known coaches in the Southeast, Rundles attacks every season with a burning desire to succeed and a firm belief in fundamental baseball.

He came to West Alabama from Carson-Newman, where he built and maintained one of the most solid programs in all of the land over a 13-year career. Rundles posted a record of 372-277 at Carson-Newman while winning five conference titles and finishing runner-up on four occasions. He guided the Eagles to a Division II College World Series berth in 1999, earning Con-ference, Region, and Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association “Coach of the Year” honors. He also led Carson-Newman to the NAIA World Series in 1993 and has been named Conference Coach of the Year on six separate occasions.

For Rundles, a long, success-filled coaching career began at Chattanooga Central (Tenn.) High School in 1977. Over an eight-year stretch, he compiled a record of 171-72. In 1985, Rundles departed for his alma mater Carson-Newman, where he served in the capacity of graduate assistant, and later as assistant coach. After two seasons on the Eagle staff, he was promoted to head coach.

Today, Rundles brings the same tireless work ethic in recruit-

ing, motivating and teaching the game to West Alabama. A firm believer in dedication and discipline, he leads by example and achieves success through hard work. He also served a term as the chairman of the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee.

Rundles, 54, is a native of Chattanooga, Tenn. He is married to the former Joan Lambert of Jefferson City, Tenn. They have three children, Alley (20), Megan (25), and a son Richard (28), who plays professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Scott Claybrook is in his first season at the

University of West Alabama.

He comes to the Tigers after spending three years on the staff at Faulkner Univer-sity where he served as the infield coach and assisted with hitters. The team went 39-21 a year ago, making the NAIA tournament for the first time and finishing the season ranked 16th in the nation.

Claybrook played for Faulkner for two seasons during which he recorded 12 saves as the team’s closer, and he also was a part-time infielder. He helped guide the team to 96 victories over the span of the two seasons he was an Eagle, and in 2003 Faulkner was a co-conference champion and finished third at the NCCAA national championships.

Following his time at Faulkner, Claybrook spent a pair of seasons at UWA where he hit .333.

Anthony Hayes is in his first season at the

University of West Alabama.

He joins the staff at UWA after spending a year at Lake Erie College where he worked with the team’s outfielders and hitters while serving as the recruiting coordinator. Under his guidance, the team broke the single-season records for home runs and runs scored while racking up the most wins in program history.

Hayes played collegiately at Charleston Southern University where he was an all-Big South Conference selection and served as the team’s captain during his senior year in which he hit .310. His time in Charleston followed a strong tenure at Columbus State Community State College where earned All-American honors from the NJCAA.

Following graduation from Charleston Southern, he played one season with the At-lantic City Surf in the Can-Am League before returning to join the coaching staff at his alma mater.

Zane Adams beings his first season on the

UWA coaching staff after spending one sea-son on the team.

Prior to his arrival at UWA, Adams played at Union University and Dyersburg State Community College … Finished with an 8-2 record in 92 innings pitched wit 68 strikeouts Named Second Team All-Conference last season with the Eagles.

David Steed returns for his fiftth season as assistant coach at The Uni-versity of West Alabama. His respon-sibilities include working with hitters, recruiting, and weight training.

The Starkville, Miss. native comes from Arkansas Tech University where he was responsible for working with the hitters during his five years. He coached five all-region and 13 all-GSC hitters.

Before becoming a coach in the collegiate ranks, he played two years at Meridian Community College where he received All-Amer-ican, all-region and team MVP honors. He was also part of the first MCC team to make it to the Junior College World Series, where he was named to the World Series All-Tournament Team.

He left MCC after being drafted by the Dodgers in the 15th round. During his nine year professional career, he played in the Dodgers, Angels and Rangers organizations with 4 of these years being played at the AAA level.

While at UWA, he has coached seven all-GSC hitters, one All-American and three all-South Central Regional players. In 2008, the Tigers set a new GSC record by having 12 players on the All-GSC team.

David is married to the former Lynda Hill from North Little Rock, Ark. and they have a 9-year-old daughter named Cameron.

In 2007 with the Red and White, Tiger hurlers posted a 3.51 ERA for the season, which stood as third best in the Gulf South Conference, while boasting the second best opponent batting average at .248.
