March 2011 Newsletter

FROM THE PRESIDENT,

AMWA INDIANA

CHAPTER

March 2011

Dear Chapter Members:

It is my great pleasure to pen my second letter to members

of AMWA Indiana Chapter. Over the next 4 months, we

will bring to your attention issues and events that we have

planned for the members.

Since 2011, the Chapter has organized three networking

events. Two events were held at the Milano Inn Restaurant:

a lunch only on 21 Jan with 10 members, and a lunch with

a speaker on 25 Feb with 11 members. Our speaker, Mr.

Brad Maurer, a corporate business attorney with Baker &

Daniels LLP in Indianapolis, gave interesting information on

Intellectual Properties such as trademarks, contracts, and

copyright (see the article on Page 2). The third networking

event took place on March 21 at the Claddagh Irish Pub in

Indianapolis, where 8 members enjoyed dinner on a warm

spring night.

Upcoming chapter events include a meeting at the Ruth-

Lilly Medical Library at IUPUI scheduled on April 1 (see the

announcement on the right) and an event at the

Indianapolis Zoo in May/June. Lastly, a dinner is planned in

June/July at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville.

Please remember to register for the Indiana-Ohio Valley

chapter conference to be held on April 29-30 at the

Creekside Conference & Event Center in Gahanna, OH.

For more details on the conferences, visit the website:

http://www.indianaohiovalleyconference.blogspot.com/.

We will continue to expand the global outreach by forging

strong relationships with other AMWA chapters in the

country. I’ll work with the Officers so that we may take

advantage of the new technologies and modes of

communication to spread our medical writing/editing skills

to a broader public. Visit the Chapter website at:

http://www.hoosieramwa.org/.

Till next time, I hope to see you at one of the Chapter’s

exciting events.

Podcast available for the last chapter

meeting

Eleven chapter members gathered on February 25, 2011 to

learn how they could use intellectual property to build a

medical writing practice. During lunch at The Milano Inn

(Indianapolis), Brad Maurer, an intellectual property

attorney and partner at the law firm Baker and Daniels,

presented “Trademark, Copyright, and Contract 101.”

In brief, a service mark is an indicator of a writer’s

professional reputation. It can increase sales of writing

services by giving potential clients confidence in

expecting a desired result. Copyrights give a writer the

option of denying, or conditionally allowing, potential

client’s use of an original work. The writer can increase

sales by separately selling or leasing different methods of

using the work to one or more clients.

The podcast for the meeting is now available at the

chapter’s website. You can listen to the podcast at

http://www.hoosieramwa.org/resources.php, view the

slides (e-mailed to all chapter members on 2/25/2011), or

contact Mr. Maurer ([email protected]). Also take

a look at a website http://www.keepyourcopyrights.org/

that helps writers proactively manage their copyrights.

About AMWA:

The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) is a national

organization for writers, editors, and other professionals in

medicine and science. The association was founded in 1940 and

has regional chapters throughout the United States and Canada

and members in 26 countries throughout the world. Through an

extensive educational program, various publications, and

unparalleled opportunities for networking, AMWA encourages

and enables its members to extend their professional expertise.

Willingness-to-Serve

Whether you are a new member or have been part of AMWA for years, we welcome your interest in becoming involved in any of the numerous volunteer opportunities within the organization. As new leaders take on assignments at the national and local level, they need up-to-date information from members who would like to take a more active role in AMWA. No matter how small or large the role(s) you select, we value your contribution to AMWA’s success. You can fill in the appropriate information on this form-enabled PDF, save it and e-mail it back to AMWA, or you can print out the form, fill in the information, and mail it back to AMWA. AMWA’s volunteer leaders and officers are not reimbursed for their time. However, they derive significant benefits, including additional opportunities for personal and professional growth, the camaraderie fostered by forging closer ties with their AMWA colleagues, and the satisfaction of helping AMWA meet the needs of its members.
