Dear Foundation Supporter,

I am deeply grateful to each one of you who has donated money to support our efforts this school year. Making Willow Glen Middle & High the BEST they can be is my passion, for I truly believe these schools offer the best start to life a child can get. It is gratifying that so many of you share and support this conviction. Thank you!

As you read through this report, I hope you’ll enjoy discovering the many wonderful initiatives the Foundation has supported this year. Two things stand out for me:

Firstly, the Foundation has infused more money into the schools this year than ever before - almost $90,000. This is a huge accomplishment and we have every right to feel proud.

Secondly, our spending this year was guided by a specific desire - to enhance the schools’ “Climate, Culture and Classrooms.” We award funds to initiatives that help maintain a vibrant school community, encourage respectful students and equip classrooms to optimize learning. From motivational assemblies to motivational T-shirts; state-of-the-art science equipment to humble daily planners; visiting authors to visiting professionals… our schools have benefitted from our efforts.

The Foundation Board and I look forward to working with you next year. In spite of a rather bleak forecast of reduced State funding to schools, I know that, with your support, the Foundation can continue to make a difference at Willow Glen Middle & High.

Very gratefully,

working with you next year. In spite of a

Allocation Highlights – Climate, Culture & Classrooms!

A Career Day volunteer tells WGHS students about the education for and responsibities of his profession.

Dream Big. WGHS Career Day.Co-sponsored by the Willow Glen Foundation, WGHS hosted the 7th bi-annual Career Day on Thursday, March 3rd which featured over 130 career professionals who volunteered their morning to inspire students. Students were exposed to a wide range of career options and resources to assist them in setting academic and professional goals. The day also reinforced the importance of high school achievement in reaching future goals.

Nationally recognized youth speaker, Richard Santana, challenges students to believein themselves and the choice they make for their future.

Our Choices Matter. WGMS Inspriational Assembly.Richard Santana, through his nationally recognized performanceentitled “Homeboy Goes to Harvard”, challenges students tocritically assess their perceptions and recognize how they influence work relationships, effectiveness, and productivity.

Mr. Santana shares his story as a third generation gang memberwho went on to earn a Master’s degree from Harvard. He demonstrates to students and educators how he accomplished the change that occurred in his life — the change that can occur in anyone's life.

Smart & Stylish. WGHS Honors Shirts. All 624 honors students, those who earned 3.0 GPA or higher on their first semester grades, were rewarded for their hard work with a free, ultra hip T-shirt.

The shirts were designed by Jef Wind, WGHS’s popular ceramics teacher, and donated by the Foundation. The take home message? It’s cool to be smart! “I had no idea the WGH had

600+ honors students. Wow.”WGH Parent

Love of Reading. WGMS Author EventsThe Foundation, along with Hicklebee’s Bookstore, continues to sponsor special author assemblies at the middle school, which introduce students to talented and popular youth fiction writers. Our two authors this year were both literature heavyweights.

In October, Rick Riordan, New York Times best-selling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, spoke to a standing room-only crowd in the WGHS cafeteria. The Foundation purchased 120 tickets so any middle school student interested could attend the evening event free. The Foundation also purchased 25 copies of Mr. Riordan’s latest book, The Last Hero, for classroom use.

In November, two-time National Book Award finalist author Laurie Anderson spoke to 8th graders, sharing her love of American History and discussing her new book Forge. The Foundation also purchased copies of Forge and its prequel Chains for each 8th grade Language Arts classroom.

Ms. Anderson spoke about her new book, Forge, along with its prequel, Chains.

“ I can’t thank the Foundation enough! The set of 9 PASCO Spark Data Collection Stations is making such a difference in my chemistry classes.

Here’s just one example, AP Chemistry students are titrating commercial vinegar to determine its concentration and find the dissociation constant for the acid.

Prior to receiving the new equipment, we were not able to do this lab because we didn’t have reliable pH meters to collect data. The Spark stations not only provide the equipment we need but also allow us to graph the data while it is being collected and print the results. The students are very excited about the new technology and what it is able to do.

Now that I have a taste for what the equipment can do, this summer, I’m going to develop labs for my Chemistry 1-2 and Honors Chemistry classes.

Thank you again for your commitment to both students and teachers!”

Ms. Green, WGHS Chemistry Teacher

Bring Instruction to Life. Classroom Equipment. The Foundation encourages teachers to ask for instructional tools that they think will further engage students. This year, we funded a range of technology including:

• 14 document cameras for math and foreign language classrooms;• 40 double needle valve gas fittings for science labs so students could work in smaller groups for more hands on experiments;• PASCO Spark Data Collection Stations; and • 2 Apple i5 iMac Computers for Yearbook and Photography classes.

The Foundation bought 2 Apple i5 iMac Computers that willbe used by students to edit digital photos and put together the yearbook.
