The 2012-13 season will be Teague Moore’s second season as the head wrestling coach at American University.

In his first year at American in 2011-12, Moore led the Eagles to a program-

record third-place finish at the EIWA Championships and a 19th-place result at the NCAA Championships. AU crowned two EIWA Champions, earned six EIWA placewinners, and sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, recording two All-Americans.

In the classroom, Moore’s Eagles finished with a 3.32 team GPA, the third-highest in Division I wrestling. A NWCA-best five student-athletes were named to the All-Academic Team,

which included Daniel Mitchell’s 3.95 cumulative GPA, the second-highest in the country.

Prior to arriving at American, Moore was the head coach at Clarion in Clarion, Pa., for five seasons. He led the Golden Eagles to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 Eastern Wrestling League Championships and the program’s first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference

Championship since 1994. He was named the 2011 PSAC Coach of the Year.

“We are very excited to welcome Teague Moore to American University as the new head coach of our wrestling program,” Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill stated at the time of Moore’s hire. “Teague has the skills, experience and drive to lead our student-athletes to continued success on the mat and in the classroom. His values are in alignment with our institution’s principles of commitment to academic and athletic achievements.”

Moore sent eight student-athletes to the NCAA Division I Championships in five years at Clarion and this season was one win shy of crowning the program’s first All-American

since 2005. Sophomore James Fleming won the 157 lbs. title at the EWL Championships and was named the Outstanding Wrestler, marking Clarion’s first EWL Champion since 2005 and first “OW” since 1980. Moore’s squad also boasted this year’s PSAC “OW” in 197 lbs. sophomore Alex Thomas and three PSAC Champions.

Moore inherited a team coming off a program record fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in 2011. American returned two All-American’s in Ryan Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa, two EIWA Champions in Flores and Matt Mariacher and nine of 10 starters from a team which won a program record 14 dual meets in 2010-11. Moore replaces Mark Cody, who after nine seasons at American, was named the head coach at Oklahoma.

“I am grateful to the American University Athletics Department for their support and confidence with this decision,” commented Moore when he arrived at American. “AU’s wrestling program has proven to be a strong national contender with a very successful record in academics. Both of those elements have been the key to my approach and focus. I’m eager to continue building upon the recent successes of the American program.”

Moore was a four-year starter at Oklahoma State under Head Coach John Smith, winning the 1998 118 lbs. NCAA Championship with a pin of Michigan State’s Dave Morgan in the finals. A three-time All-American, he also placed third in 1999, fourth in 1997 and qualified for Nationals as a freshman. Moore was a two-time BIG XII Champion and runner-up as a senior, and currently ranks 18th in Cowboy history with a career record of 118-25.

He was a three-time member of the National Team, earning a silver medal at the 2003

World Cup and placing second at the 2002 World Team Trials. He also took third place at the 2003 World Team Trials, 2003 U.S. Open National Championships and 2004 U.S. Open National Championships.

Prior to being named head coach at Clarion, Moore spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant at Harvard. In 2003-04 he was the director of film and facilities for the Oklahoma State program which won the 2004 NCAA Team Championship, BIG XII Championship and National Duals Championship. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping the Sooners to a third-place finish at the 2003 NCAA

Championships, after beginning his career as an assistant at Pittsburgh.

Moore was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008. Wrestling for North Allegheny High School he was a three-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association placewinner and 1995 State Champion. He was also a three-time Pennsylvania State Freestyle Champion, three-time Junior National Freestyle Champion and National High School Champion in 1995.

The 2012-13 season will be Kyle Borshoff’s third season on the American University wrestling coaching staff and his second campaign as a full-time assistant coach.

In 2011-12, American recorded a program-record third-place finish at the EIWA Championships. Two Eagles -- heavyweight Ryan Flores and Matt Mariacher (141 lbs.) -- were crowned conference champions and Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa (157 lbs.) earned All-America honors. Borshoff worked closely throughout the season with Mariacher and Sanjaa, who combined to register a 48-15 record on the campaign.

Borshoff served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010-11, helping American to its best season in program history. American placed fifth at the NCAA Championships and crowned three All-Americans, with Flores becoming just the second Eagle to reach the NCAA Finals. American placed fourth at the EIWA Championships as Steve Fittery, Flores and Mariacher each captured individual titles. The Eagles’ 14 dual meet victories set a record for most wins in a season.

American also excelled in the classroom in each of the last two years. The team was ranked second in the country in combined GPA in 2010-11 (3.48 GPA) and finished third in 2011-12 with a 3.3.32 mark. Six Eagles were named NWCA

Academic All-Americans in 2010-11, setting a new NWCA record, and adding five more in 2011-12.

Borshoff graduated from the Kogod School of Business in May 2010 with a degree in business administration. He was a two-time All-American as an Eagle, a two-time Midlands Placewinner and three-time NCAA Qualifier. He graduated with a career record of 102-39 and currently ranks fifth in career wins, fifth in career falls, fourth in career technical falls and sixth in career major decisions.

In his last season with the Eagles, Borshoff earned his second consecutive All-America honor by placing eighth at the NCAA Championships to become one of only four student-athletes in American history to earn multiple All-America honors. He finished the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 28-8 and a dual meet record of 16-0, and recorded four tech falls and four falls. Borshoff placed fifth at the EIWA Championships and seventh at the Midlands Championships as a senior, and was ranked as high as third in the InterMat College Rankings.

Borshoff earned his first All-America honor in 2009, placing seventh at the NCAA Championships and recording a 33-7 overall record. He finished third at the EIWA Championships and fourth at the Midlands Championships. Borshoff first qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman after a fourth-place showing at the EIWA Championships, making him the first true freshman in American history to qualify for Nationals.

The 2012-13 season will be Pete Friedl’s second season on the American University wrestling coaching staff.

In 2011-12, American recorded a program-record third-place finish

at the EIWA Championships. Two Eagles -- heavyweight Ryan Flores and Matt Mariacher (141 lbs.) -- were crowned conference champions and Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa (157 lbs.) earned All-America honors. Freidl worked closely

throughout the season with Flores, who was ranked No. 1 in the country at heavyweight for 16 straight weeks during the campaign.

Friedl came to American after one season as an assistant coach at Appalachian State. Friedl helped guide two Mountaineer wrestlers to the NCAA Championships.

Friedl was a standout collegiate wrestler at Illinois where he was a four-time NCAA qualifier (2003-06) and three-time All-American (2004-06), placing as high as third at 184 lbs. in his senior season. He captured the Big Ten conference championship in 2005, leading the Ilini to the team title that season. Friedl was also a 2006 Midlands Champion, propelling Illinois to its third straight championship at that event. He graduated as the third-winningest wrestler in Ilini history with 125 career victories.

2011-12 Honors and Awards

5 Academic All-Americans;Third-Best GPA in Div. I

The Eagles earned the third-highest GPA among NCAA Division I teams for the second consecutive year while earning five Academic All-Americans. AU is the only program to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and finish in the top 30 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last seven years. Flores and Mitchell were ranked in the top five among individual GPA’s in Division I wrestling.

Mitchell Wins NCAA 89 Elite Award

On the final day of the NCAA Championships, Mitchell was presented with the Elite 89 Award for having the highest GPA among NCAA qualifyers. The award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

19th Place NCAA Finish;2 NCAA All-Americans

American continued its postseason success as the team recorded another overall top 20-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Seniors Ryan Flores and Ganbayar Sanjaa finished sixth in the heavyweight and 157lbs. weight classes, respectively, to earn All-America honors as well. Senior Matt Mariacher, along with juniors Kevin Tao and Danny Mitchell, also qualified for NCAAs, giving the Eagles five NCAA qualifiers for the 2012 tournament.

3rd Place EIWA Finish;6 EIWA Placewinners

American set a prgram record with its third-place finish at the 2012 EIWA Championships. Flores and Mariacher each reclaimed the title at their respective weight classes, a feat which the two accomplished last year becoming the first back-to-back EIWA Champion pair in program history. Tao finished second, as American recorded six EIWA placewinners. Other placewinners at the tournament included Mitchell (sixth) Sanjaa (fourth), and Thomas Williams (sixth).

Charles “Fritz” Maier was a four-year member of the American University wrestling team and one of the most skilled grapplers of his day.

In the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, Maier consistently outmatched his opponents on the mat and became a four-time Mason Dixon champion. As a freshman, Maier won his first championship in the 157 lbs. weight class. In his sopohomore season Maier moved up to 167 lbs. where he proceeded to win three more titles. Maier was also a key member of the 1959-60 squad which went 8-0 in dual meets and p roduced American’s only Mason D i x o n T e a m Champion-ship.

Vidvuds “Vince” Celtnieks graduated from American University in 1965 as one of the most well rounded athletes to have ever graced the AU playing surfaces.

In his four years as an Eagle, Celtnieks earned varsity letters in wrestling, cross country, track and soccer. As a wrestler Celtnieks was coached by both Frank Morgan, who guided American to the Mason Dixon Team Championshipin 1960, and Isidore Abrams. On the soccer pitch, Celtnieks was a member of the 1964 team which snapped a streak of four consecutive years with a loosing record. As a cross country and track athlete Celtnieks was a teammate to future NCAA Champions Peter Chen and Andrew “Butch” Bell.

Dr. Robert Karch headed American University’s wrestling program for 10 seasons, between 1968 and 1979. In his first season as coach, he led a team that had won just one dual match in the previous four seasons to four dual match wins. In the decade which Karch served as the program’s mentor, he amassed more than 70 dual match wins and coached 17 con-ference place-winners, a conference champion and several first-place or second-place finishes at invitational tournaments. No slouch on the mat himself, Karch won three Atlantic Coast Conference Championships while wrestling for the University of Maryland.

In 1979, Karch stepped down as the wrestling coach to develop AU’s Mas-ter of Science program in Health and Fitness Management, which he con-tinues to di-rect. He has served the Athletics De-partment for the last sev-eral years as the Faculty Athletic rep-resentative.

Washington, D.C.The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Reflecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fields. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

Academic Support

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.

The Eagles have flourished in the classroom as well under Gill’s guidance as American’s 16 teams have continued their streak of 23 consecutive semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0. In 2011-12, 121 student-athletes

were named to the university’s Dean’s List as the department posted a 3.37 combined GPA.

Prior to coming to American, Gill spent three years at the University of Oklahoma. He oversaw a major portion of OU athletics, including men’s basketball, women’s soccer and baseball, and the supervision of personnel, budgets, facilities, fundraising, student-athlete issues and the selection and evaluation of coaches for these sports. Gill was the director of membership services at the NCAA from 2000 to 2004. He developed and communicated policies related to Division I intercollegiate athletics, including governance, rules compliance, diversity, gender equity, academic integrity, student-athlete welfare, fiscal integrity, strategic planning, sportsmanship and legislation. He oversaw and ensured the effective operation of the athletics certification program, and managed a staff of 35 who provided education and guidance to Division I institutions conducting their periodic self-studies. Previously, Gill worked at the NCAA from 1995 to 1999 as a membership services representative.

At Vanderbilt from 1999 to 2000, Gill was an assistant athletic director and worked with the AD to implement the annual planning process to help 16 athletics teams achieve their academic and competitive goals.
