personally invite you to join me in making some of my favorite

music. Each of our concerts has been carefully designed to

collaborate with you, who I have known as among the country’s

most discerning and culturally active audiences. Rich with the

composers and music you and I love — long-time favorites,

unfamiliar pieces by familiar composers plus freshly minted works

which I personally guarantee will become some of your new

favorites, as they already are mine.

We present a season that bridges genre and generation, graced

by our hand-picked selection of outstanding soloists. I am so

proud of our musicians, and we all look forward to you sharing

in our audience. Whether you are a first-time or a long-time

concertgoer, you are welcome to get up close and personal with

me and with the incomparable joy of our Music in the Key of A2.

See you at the Symphony,

Arie LipskyMusic Director and Conductor

Inspired by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Brahms composed his brilliant Piano Concerto No.1 as a veritable symphony for piano and orchestra, a must-hear for every music lover. Your A2SO capturesSibelius’ portrayal of the Finnish character in this symphony ofNorthern Lights, relentless energy and determination.

Fiery passion, emotion and finesse warm your November night with Ravel’s Bolero, known as one of the most fantastic displays of orchestral crescendos in the entire repertoire. Celebrate the greatest guitar master of our lifetime, Andres Segovia, with a classic written for him and played by one of today’s hottest guitarists. Then celebrate the 100th birthday of Mexican composer genius José Pablo Moncayo in his joyous Huapango. Uruguayan sensation Marco Sartor is a top prize winner in international guitar competitions including the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition.

Celebrate this year’s edition of the Mozart Birthday Bash with A2SO Principal Trumpet William Campbell who will dazzle you with Papa Mozart’s charming Baroque-inspired Trumpet Concerto. Local favorite Yehonatan Berick, hailed for his tremendous performance with the A2SO in 2011, will play Wolfgang Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3. The spirited evening concludes with the Symphony No. 35, the “Haffner,”one of the most energetic pieces Mozart ever wrote.

Let your imagination come alive at this exotic symphonic blend of music inspired by the Arabian Nights and Sufi Romantic poetry. Last performed by the A2SO in 1992, Scheherazade showcases each instrument in the orchestra. Ann Arbor’s own award-winning composer Evan Chambers’ Crazed for the Flame begins with a Rilke sonnet and blooms into a radiant homage to Qawwali music. Savor Elgar’s Cello Concerto, one of the most noble cello concertos ever written, and a piece on every listener’s — and cellist’s — bucket list. Cellist Amit Peled wowed audiences at the Marlboro, Newport and Seattle Chamber Music Festivals and has been featured on NPR’s Performance Today.

“Not one of his works came as directly from his innermost heart as this,” said Alma Mahler about her husband’s epic work. Nowhere is Mahler more complex, more fascinating or more satisfying than in his Symphony No. 6. Sit back and take in this awe-inspiring piece by this A2SO who is making a reputation for itself for getting directly to that innermost heart of Mahler.

“First, the orchestra is sounding terrific.

If I played a CD of this for someone, they

would have thought it was the Vienna

Philharmonic. Not only was there a sense of

Style, Arie and everyone knew what to do

with that Style, they were so on it with all the

little details. I couldn’t believe that it was going

to be so terrific. Everybody was great. Freda

was great, the choruses were great. It’s a

grown up orchestra now! It proves my point

that you don’t have to be from a great big city

to have a great orchestra.”From Bill Bolcom, May 2011 on the A2SO performingMahler Symphony No. 3
