About Our New Name...

Can you imagine having to re-name a pet that you love? It would be very strange! Go on, picture your pet right now and then try and give it a new name in your head... it does not really fit does it? That is pretty

much what myself and the Impact Leadership team had to do early in 2012. Our organisation is something that we love, and yet we discovered that we needed to change our name.

We have fantastic plans to keep growing and we discovered that along the way we would need to change our name in order to have the trademark rights. So we set out trying to re-name Impact Leadership. nothing we thought of seemed to fit. We must have brainstormed 200 different names; it took forever. We looked up definitions, different languages and even tried to make up new words.

It was like trying to come up with a new name for our pet... it seemed impossible. But our persistence paid off and we got there!

We finally made the decision to be known as GRIP Leadership. “hmm... interesting”, I have heard a few people say so far. “What does it mean?”GRIP actually refers to two different things. firstly, it is the acronym for the four core values that we have had since we began: Growth, Relationship, Integrity, People.

Secondly, GRIP explains the way that we like to look at leadership. Leadership is a part of everyday life for all people; it is a tool that we can GRIP on to in order to positively influence others and ourselves.

We are the same people, with the same values and the same passion for training leaders.

That is the story behind the new name. Just like a cheesy song from a Disney musical, the more you say it in your mind, the more it catches on!

Ronan McGinniss talks about the transition from‘Impact Leadership’ to ‘GRIP Leadership.’

What’s YourSTOry?

It is a myth to believe that the most valuable tool of a leader is the latest leadership formula or the latest five step process. have you ever considered how valuable a ‘story’ can be to a leader?

Educator and scholar, Dr. Mark Strom, explains this well when he writes “stories are the threads by which we weave identity.”

Dr. Cheryl Phillips of Changing Communities tells her story as follows ... “as most kids do, I carved out a place in my family and community. I also became aware of the strong script that was written in invisible ink; for boys it was to work on the family farm when they left school and the girls were to get a local job to fill in time until they married and had a family. I was following the script without question up until the age of seventeen and then it just didn’t seem “enough”. I started to pursue my passion – children – but not in the way set out in the script. I left my small community for Melbourne to train as a mother craft nurse or care for children aged between one day and three and a half years in an orphanage. I knew instantly that this was the next part of my script, it just felt right.

One of the other life changing insights I gained during this time was the alternative way of learning, that is, one where theory was integrated with practice. It was so exciting, stimulating, and I knew I was on a life long journey. My frustration in secondary school where I was taught the theory without

the practical application had left me feeling inadequate and a failure.

The decision to break away from the script was presented by my family which was very significant. As I reflect on my journey, the process of working out my identity and

Page 10: 2012-2013 GRIP Magazine

10 Conference Guide 2012-2013

discovering my purpose, I realise it takes courage to live your authentic life ... the journey is all about story – we have a choice on how that story unfolds, learning from the past and crafting the next chapters.”

Our stories are the things that make sense of our experience, relationships and ideas. As we review and reflect on our story we will be better positioned to make the right choice with increased clarity.

WE THINk AND LIvE IN STOrIES...Stephen Denning suggests that “humans think in stories, they dream in stories”. Our hopes and fears reside in stories. Our imaginations consist of stories. We plan in stories. We gossip, love and hate in stories. Storytelling is closely associated with the very conception of self. The personal journey that each one of us takes and the story related to that journey enables us to tap into potential. This journey can be challenging but also extremely fulfilling.

WE ArE CONNECTED IN STOrIES... The wise leader will use story in ways that will enrich those that are lead. According to the American scholar Jean houston stories “propel people from the personal particular to the personal universal. We seek consciously or

unconsciously for those people and ideas whose stories seem relevant to our own. Their stories illuminate, run parallel to and fill in the missing gaps of our stories.” This provides a real sense of belonging or community and enables those led to be able to make a contribution or to find their areas of brilliance.

WE SEE WISDOm IN STOrIES...Phillips suggests that we need to “contemplate on all aspects of our life, taking time out of business.” She published research on wise women elders both in European and Indigenous communities; in which it is interesting to note that she states that the common character traits in wise female elders emerged as “having a positive attitude, a reflective approach, an intention to learn from their life experience, an ability to really listen and a commitment to act with integrity and honesty.”

DISCOvErINg yOUr STOry...So how do we discover the wisdom in our own story? Phillips suggests a three step process to help with this:

Step #1: reflect on your values, behaviours, patterns and emotions. This informs our self awareness and enables us to be real with ourselves and with those around us. This inherently requires us to act with integrity, honesty and respect.

Step #2: Engage with others. not simply to interact but rather connect in a way that brings a deeper understanding of each person. The most integral part is listening – really listening. This is much more than hearing words, it is about comprehending the meaning of the words, the intent behind them and the non-verbal communication which is shared. As you listen, you will form your own story, similar or different.

Step #3: Empowerment. It relates to the ongoing process of ourselves and others. This requires each of us to be available to others discerning who it is we can resource to facilitate them on their journey.

CULTUrE AND IDENTITy IN STOrIES...Stories are where our identity is to be formed. This is as true of groups and communities as it is of individuals. Stories are the glue of cultures such that to change a culture the dominant story must change.

fernando flores said, “Value is not produced by hard work. Value is produced by story. Value lies in creating new possibility, inventing a world class story of your future. It will take committed imagination”.

“Our hopes and fears reside in stories. Our imaginations consist of stories. We plan in stories.”

Page 11: 2012-2013 GRIP Magazine

To understand the power of story and its impact on a community, a family, a culture, or school allows a wise leader to frame conversations and programs often in ways that draw out the immense potential that lies within every one of us.

USE STOry TO CAST A vISION...According to Dr. Mark Strom there are eight principles for casting a vision using story:

1. Know the current story2. name the best of the past that

can still inspire the future3. name the present in terms of

what must change and what must endure

4. Paint a picture of the future that honours the past and addresses the current realities

5. name themes that bring energy to past, present and future

6. Model a committed imagination7. Keep the language simple and

direct8. Capture the heart of the story in

a few memorable statements

If you are interested in changing the culture of an organisation or indeed a school, story is the vehicle by which this can take place. The vision of any organisation, school or community is story. What’s your story?

have you ever wondered why the words you use seem to have the desired influence on some students but almost no influence on others? have you ever wondered why some students are eagerly attentive in your class whilst others are the exact opposite?

It is all about influence… the measure of all successful leaders. Many people enter the teaching profession because of a desire to positively influence young people. Teachers hope that the words they use, the skills they teach and character they nurture will have a lasting impact on the life of every student. In this sense, teachers are leaders for every student that ever sits in their classroom.

John Maxwell wrote the book “The 5 Levels of Leadership” which looks at how a leader can continually increase their influence. In this article we will look at this in the context of the teaching profession. Maxwell suggests that it is actually possible to influence every single student, once you are aware of the 5 Levels of Leadership that you need to ascend through. At each level, more and more students will respond to you.

On the next page is an illustration of the 5 Levels of Leadership, and as you can see, your influence increases as you go to the higher levels.

The question to now ask yourself as a leader is, ‘what level are you on with most of your students and what do you need to work on to advance to the next level?’ Be warned, if you do not move up the levels and just stay at the position level, then the influence you originally had to start with almost becomes null and void. Students will start to undermine your positional influence and will be less responsive to you. however, as you deliberately aim to influence at each of these levels, students will one by one begin to be responsive to your leadership and eventually become a result of your leadership.

HOW A TEACHEr CAN INCrEASE THEIr INFLUENCE WITH STUDENTS

Page 19: 2012-2013 GRIP Magazine

  2012-2013 Conference Guide 19

LEvEL 1: POSITIONIn today’s society it is no longer realistic to think that because of your ‘position’ every student will be influenced by you. Simply having the title of ‘teacher’ means that some students will follow you because they have to, but few will be genuinely influenced by you in any lasting way.

LEvEL 2: PErmISSIONThis is the start of true influence. It is when students follow you because they want to. At this level students will follow you beyond the authority that comes with your position as they give you ‘permission’ to influence them.

LEvEL 3: PrODUCE rESULTSThis level is when students follow you because of what you have done for the school. They have seen the great results that you produced and therefore follow you, trusting that you could produce these results for them too.

LEvEL 4: PEOPLE DEvELOPmENTAt this level students follow you because of the good things you have done for them personally. As a result of your influence they feel that they are growing and succeeding. They seek you to even further influence their life.

LEvEL 5: PErSONAL vALUESAt this level you will see student’s values change. This is where students follow you because of who you are and what you represent or stand for. Your values will become their values, resulting in you having a life changing effect of your students.

THE 5 LEvELS OF LEADErSHIP TrIANgLE

“It’s actually possible to influence every single student, once you are aware of the five levels of leadership.”

Page 20: 2012-2013 GRIP Magazine

20 Conference Guide 2012-2013

The biggest dilemma facing teachers who work withstudentleaders...

If you are a teacher who works with a group of student leaders then chances are you would love an answer to these questions:

‘How do I make the leaders less reliant on me? What extra tasks can I give them so that I do not have to do everything for them?’

Page 21: 2012-2013 GRIP Magazine

  2012-2013 Conference Guide 21

Even though you might have a great group of student leaders, do you feel like they often need you to initiate things and to keep everything moving forward? Do

you leave each leadership meeting with a list of things you have to do because you know the leaders can’t quite do these things on their own? Do you ever feel like you are doing more and more of their role as time goes by?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these then don’t worry, it’s normal! It’s not your fault and it is not your leaders fault.

The good news is that it is possible to reach the stage where your student leaders can become more self sufficient. not only does this make it less draining on your time but they will actually benefit from doing a lot of what you’re currently doing for them.

It is a win win!

The first step is to take out a sheet of paper and do a brainstorm of everything that you currently do in your role working with the student leaders.

Include the little tasks, the big tasks, the conversations, the emails, the running around – everything! Be both specific and general, and make sure it is a detailed and comprehensive list.

Once you have your list you then need to take every task and write it under one of the following four categories:

1. TASkS TO rETAINYou will need to retain some tasks on your list. however, only add tasks to this list if the tasks are high risk (if they don’t happen properly it will be a nightmare) and high in complexity. A task like ‘public liability insurance compliance’ will be on this list.

2. TASkS TO SySTEmISETasks for this list should be the tasks that are high risk but are highly repetitive. You will be retaining them but because they are repetitive you will systemise them so that they take up less of your time. for example, if you regularly spend time reminding students of meetings then print out a few hundred reminder notes right now and set reminders in your phone to place the notes in the relevant class teacher’s pigeon holes the day before each meeting. Spending ten minutes creating the system now will save the ongoing headache of running around later.

3. TASkS TO TrAIN OTHErSTasks that have low risk but high complexity fit into this list. Tasks like organising an assembly can be taught to student leaders. Some schools have leaders read the assembly announcements but it’s possible for them to do the entire liaising and preparation too! It may take more time from you as you teach them initially but with so many assemblies each year it’s worth this extra time.

4. TASkS TO DELEgATE NOWOn your list there will definitely be tasks that are low in risk and are highly repetitive. Do not waste another second, delegate these to the leaders now! Taking minutes at meetings, placing notices in newsletters... these things are not as complex or critical as you might have been in the habit of thinking.

Once you have categorised all of your tasks into these lists begin taking the action that each category will require. Once you begin, you will soon see how this benefits both you and your leaders.

One of the valuable things that you can take away from this conference is mOmENTUm. As

you would be aware, momentum is fantastic, but to continue moving forward you need a source of frequent motion.

GRIP Leadership is committed to making sure that this conference is not a ‘flash in the pan’ experience. Therefore, we have identified five proven ways to help you and your leaders keep momentum back at school.

HAvE A DEBrIEF mEETINgGather your students together as soon as possible after attending the conference. This meeting should have three parts to it. firstly have each student fill out the ‘Moving forward’ page that is near the back of their conference booklet. These answers can then be shared with the whole leadership team. next you should revisit any unfinished discussions that occurred during the conference sessions. Look back through the booklet to identify these. finally, have the whole team develop a list of goals (between two and five) that you will collectively aim to achieve.

CrEATE AN ACCOUNT ONgrIPSOCIAL.COm.AUOur team continually creates articles, blogs and videos with tips

and ideas to help student leaders. We have developed a dedicated online community especially for this. It is totally free and can be thought of as an educational ‘Leadership facebook.’ We encourage you and each of your leaders to create an account so that you can have access to these great follow-up tools.

gET STArTED ON A SHOrT TErm PrOjECTDecide on an event or project that will be easy enough for the student leaders to complete within the next two weeks. This gives them a chance to use their new skills straight away. Resist the urge to put off the project until ‘after the holidays’ as it is better to hold an event straight away (even if it is not perfect). At the completion of the project undertake a thorough debrief. You will find that this event will energise the leaders to become even more active and it will give you a real context to discuss leadership, without having to rely solely on referring to the theory presented at the conference.

UTILISE ADDITIONAL LEADErSHIP rESOUrCESIt goes without saying that teachers rely on a variety of classroom resources when teaching maths, science, art... the list goes on. for this reason we were asked some years ago what resources we could recommend for assisting in

leadership development? We were stumped. Most of the material we found was either written overseas or was ‘fluffy’ and too general. We have therefore spent a lot of time developing a whole range of practical resources based on the needs of teachers just like you. In the centre of this magazine there are a number of pages that provide an overview of the resources available.

BECOmE A ‘grIP gOLD mEmBEr’ SCHOOLBecause you have participated in the conference your school can join the brand new ‘GRIP Gold Membership’ program for free. This gives your school convenient and easy access to the best that GRIP Leadership has to offer.
