    The Atlantic Landscape Associations are trade organizations representing the pro-vincial landscape industries. Members of the provincial green industry / horti-cultural associations are committed to providing quality products and services, environmentally sustainable and professional practices to the consumer.

    Our associations promote high standards in product quality, professional service and conduct in the horticultural trades industry; and to encourage the use of As-sociation members by the public. This is achieved through training initiatives, industry certification, networking and encouraging environmental best practices.     Robin Godfrey is second generation owner of his family business, Atlantic Gardens and Lakeland Plant World. Robin grew up in Bedford, Nova Scotia and graduated from the University of New Brunswick in 1993 with a BBA. Upon graduation, Robin returned to Nova Scotia and the family business started by his parents Peggy and Jim Godfrey in 1968. Currently, Robin is the operations manager of the growing facility in Middle Sackville, Nova Scotia and General Manager of the retail store Lakeland Plant World in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

    Robin serves as the CNLA Representative on the board of Landscape Nova Scotia. Landscape Nova Scotia is the trade association of Nova Scotias horticultural industry, which is the original green industry. Robin resides in Hammonds Plains with his wife, Angela and their children Alexander and Marielle.

    Scott Mosher, P.Eng. Owner of Terra Nova Landscaping, graduated from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) in 1987 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil).

    Scott is the past President of Landscape Nova Scotia and has been a Board Member for many years. Scott is married to Anne (also a Professional Engineer), and has 2 children, Ashley & David.

    Paul MacPhee, President of Landscape Nova Scotia, is also the owner / operator of MacPhees Land-scaping Services. In business since 1995, he has spent the last 14 years steadily growing the company concentrating on quality customer care. Services provided include: professional design, as well as, installation and maintenance contracting.

    He graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College with Landscape Horticulture. He has been serving on the board for several years now and continues to work closely with the associations Spring Ideal Garden and Patio Show.

    Peter Bugden was born in Corner Brook, NL and graduated from Acadia University with a BBA in 1977. Peter has been the owner of Nutri-Lawn franchise in Nova Scotia since 1990, serving Metro Halifax, An-napolis Valley, South Shore.

    He has served as Treasurer for Landscape Nova Scotia 2007 - 2010. Peter volunteers as President for Central Minor Hockey Federation and is Past President of the Dartmouth Whalers Minor Hockey Association.

    Laura Coupar is the Vice President of Operations at Elmsdale Landscaping Limited and has worked in vari-ous stages of the turf grass and soil production industry. This is her third year of involvement with Landscape Nova Scotia and currently serves on the Board of Directors as Treasurer. Laura graduated from Saint Marys university with a Commerce degree in 2007, majoring in accounting.

    Russell Beakhouse graduated from the NSCC Landscape Technician program in 1999 with honours after a career change as the Regional Manager Of Revlon Canada for 12 years. Russell has owned and oper-ated Groundcover Landscape Services Ltd since 1999, an award winning landscape construction firm that specializes in residential landscape installations and renovations.

    Russell is the Chair of the Garden and Patio Show Committee, a Past President of Landscape Nova Scotia and sat on the Board of Directors for many years. He was delighted when asked to return and sit on the Board of Directors again and looks forward to lending a hand. Russell resides in Hubley, NS and has been

    married to Melinda for 24 years and has one daughter, Sarah.

    dOUG BRAnnEnShaw Brick

    Doug has been employed with Shaw Brick for 6 years. Currently, he holds a few roles within the Brick division including: Branch Manager of the Dartmouth location; Technical Landscape Rep for Engineers & Contractors within Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and; Contractor Certification/Trainer for SRW & ICP.

    Doug grew up in Lantz, Nova Scotia and still calls it home today. He graduated in 2002 with a Technical Diploma from Memorial University in St. Johns Newfoundland. Doug is married to Rhoda and is the proud father of two beautiful girls, Gracie and Emma.

    Tom is the owner of Maritime Lawn and Garden in Halifax. Maritime Lawn and Garden has been provid-ing Power Equipment to Halifax and Nova Scotia for over 30 years.

    Tom is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University with a BA in Geography and Political Science. Prior to Mar-itime Lawn and Garden, Tom was the Regional Sales Manager for Ceridian Canada in Atlantic Canada.

    Tom worked for the City of London in the Forestry Department for 8 years in a variety of rolls. Tom is a Volunteer Fire Fighter in Fall River, NS.

    AndREW PAlMERBlomidon Nurseries

    Currently General Manager with Blomidon Nurseries (1970) Ltd in Greenwich, Nova Scotia, Palmer previ-ously spent several years with an industrial equipment supply company in the golf and turf industries in Atlantic Canada where he started out as Territory Manager in 1996. His commitment to new business development and customer service earned him a promotion to Operations Manager in 1999, and, in 2008, he was promoted to General Manager, a position at which he excelled, and that prepared him for his next career challenge with Blomidon Nurseries.

    Originally from New Brunswick, Palmer holds a Diploma in Horticulture and Turf Management from On-tarios renowned University of Guelph where he graduated with honours. When not working, he enjoys a good game of golf, hockey or softball.

    Ryans education background includes completion of a under graduate degree at Dalhousie University that focused on Marketing and Economics. Other disciplines of his education include Public Relations and Project Management certification courses at NSCC, as well as golf / sport field construction and landscape installation courses at NSAC. After a few years of hiatus following his post-secondary education, Ryan en-tered as the 3rd generation member in the family business.

    Now in his 7th year with the family business, Ryan serves a multitude of roles. Ryan is the sales, marketing and communications director at MVQS. He also serves as the liaison for advertising / promotions / sales in the familys NB based sod production company, NBQT. Ryan is also the architect behind the new company direction as National Grass See Distributor in Canada. He is both the agent and media spokesperson presenting an exciting new grass seed, RTF Water Saver - The Only Seed Youll Ever Need.

    David Thompson is the president of the Greenpoint group of companies, which operates Weed Man and Christmas Dcor franchises throughout the Maritimes. Prior to joining this family business, David was a business lawyer for 13 years with Boyne Clarke in Dartmouth and Lang Michener in Vancouver. David presently serves on the Board of Landscape Nova Scotia and Plant Health Atlantic. David has also served on boards and committees of several charitable and community organizations, including the Halifax Chamber of Commerce, Oikocredit Atlantic, and the Savage Humanities Trust, among others. David lives in Dartmouth with his spouse Kate and his two daughters, Maya and Portia.

    Environmental Horticulture Students Receive Awards at nSAcLandscape Nova Scotia and the New Brunswick Horticultural Association jointly award a $600scholarship to the most promising second-year Diploma in Managed Landscapes Technology stu-dent. Selection criteria include academic performance and practical work skills. David Crawford, Dartmouth, NS, a 2nd year Environmental Horticulture Technology student, was the 2011 recipient, pictured back row, far left, in photo.

    This award is presented in memory of a man who was instrumental in the establishment of the three professional landscaping organizations in Atlantic Canada. Serving as Secretary of Landscape Atlantic during its formative years, Ray Webber was always there to inspire and to help. He carried the load of many and was well loved by all who knew him.

    Today, Landscape Nova Scotia and the Landscape New Brunswick jointly sponsor the Raymond Webber Memorial Scholarship. In the spirit of helping others attain their goals, this award is given to a promising NSAC student soon to join the industry. Selection criteria consider applicants academic performance and practical work skills. The faculty and teaching staff of the Landscape Horticultural Technology Program make the selection of the recipient each year.

    John Evans has owned and operated Pro-Care Lawn and Property Maintenance for 11 years, and has been on Landscape New Brunswicks Board of Directors since 2005. He has been involved to a great degree with our Environment Committee and was instrumental in achieving at least some concessions from our Pro-vincial Government on the Pesticide issues of late. The establishment of Plant Health Atlantic and our IPM Accreditation program is in large part due to Johns efforts. He is in year two of his Presidency, and already he has constructed some big shoes to fill.

    Neil Pond is the President and founder of Urban Landscaping Ltd. Located in Rothesay, New Bruns-wick. Formed in 1989, Urban Landscaping Ltd. provides design build landscaping services as well as landscape maintenance services year round. Neil has pioneered many IPM (integrated pest manage-ment) techniques and services in his region and is a proponent of organic and organic-based lawn care approaches. Neil also established a composting and soil manufacturing division called Urban Organics which has been in operation for 10 years. Urban Organics utilizes yard waste, wood waste, and various food-

    based biosolids in its operation. Finished products are sold in bulk to local medium & high-end horticultural mar-kets. Neil is a graduate from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Landscape Horticulture Technology and is also a certified Master Composter. Neil is also an active member of LNBHTA (Landscape New Brunswick Horticultural Trades Association) and is currently the chair of the LNBHTA Environment Committee.

    Secretary treasurerMicHEllE GillESPiESun Nurseries

    Michelle Gillespie has been the face of Sun Nurseries as long as most people can remember. Her fit with LNB is a natural and a longstanding one, having served as Secretary Treasurer since the turn of the century (almost). We all benefit form her role as secretary Treasurer. She has a keen mind for numbers and does reasonably well with the alphabet as well. She completed her Bachelor Science in Forestry degree from UNB in 1983 and worked in Forest Genetics and Tree Improvement at J.D. Irving Ltd and Canadian Forest Service for 10 years prior to becoming Nursery Manager at Sun Nurseries. Michelle achieved her Horticul-tural Certificate from the University of Guelph in 1995. She currently also volunteers as Treasurer and Show Manager for The N.B. Codiak Reining Association.

    Darrell owns and operates Lawn Rangers Landscaping and Lawn Care/ Christmas Dcor in Moncton. He has been involved with our board since 2004, serving 2 years during that time as President. Darrell is cur-rently representing NB on the CNLA board of directors, and serves as chair of the Member Services Com-mittee. Without Darrells dedication, effort and work ethic, our training programs would not be what they are today, not to mention how he has carried the ball on apprenticeship in the province.

    SHERRY clAYBOURn Shaw Brick

    Sherry has been with Shaw Brick for a little over 20 years, and is currently serving her first term on the LNB board. She manages their Fredericton Retail store and covers a sales territory of part of NB and the US, as well as looking after the larger buying groups (dealer coordinator). She also sits on the Board of Directors for the Fredericton chapter of the Canadian Home Builders Association.

    KAREn cARRiERKutting Vine Garden & Lawn Maintenance

    Karen was born in Truro and graduated from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology. While working as Greenhouse Manager at Lakeland Plant World in Dartmouth, Karen attended Mount Saint Vincent University where she completed her Bachelor of Education and went on to teach in the public schools. Looking to return to the landscape industry and the great outdoors, Karen opened Kutting Vine Garden & Lawn Maintenance in 2008.

    Since joining LNB, Karen has attended many seminars and courses, and obtained her IPM Turf Practitioner and Pesticide Applicator certifications. Given the opportunity to mix two career paths in one, Karen stepped forward as one of two instructors for the Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship program. In her first year on the LNB board, Karen has also become involved with the ACES and Environment committees.

    AndREW lAWSOn, cltGreen Village Home and Garden

    After graduating from University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Education degree, Andrew took a summer job at Green Village Home and Garden in Fredericton, and has been working in the industry ever since, currently at Scotts Nursery. In the past 15 years in the horticulture industry, he have been an active member of the Fredericton Botanic Garden Association serving on the Board of Directors and volunteering for major fundraising events. He has also been involved with Landscape New Brunswick serving on their Board of Directors and in organizing and participating in various educational events throughout the years.

    dAVE MilBURn, B.tEcH/EnViRO.HORt., cltFocal Point Landscape Design and Installation

    Daves interest in pursuing a career in the horticulture industry was sparked while working for a lo-cal landscape company as a summer student. This interest led him to work many seasons with that particular company as well as obtain his CLT designation in landscape installation and a degree in Environmental Horticulture from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

    After gaining both educational and practical experience he opened his own landscape company Focal Point Landscape Design and Installation in Fredericton, New Brunswick. His company specializes in predominantly residential landscape installation in and around the Fredericton area. His company thrives to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and sustainability while

    creating outdoor spaces that customers will enjoy for a lifetime.

    Dave has a passion for continued education, certification and the apprenticeship program and looks forward to helping and being active in the horticulture industry progression both as a member of LNBs board of directors and as a landscape contractor.

    JAMEY SMitH, clt, cldRed Oak Landscaping

    Red Oak Landscaping founder, Jamey Smith, comes from a history of landscaping. Jamey gained experience working for his grandfather and uncles, becoming the third generation of landscapers in the Smith family. He went on and studied Landscape Design at Humber College in Ontario, Land-scape Construction and Plant Material at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and Landscape Design at the University of Guelph. Jamey has his Certificate of Qualification for Horticulturist Landscaper, & Greenskeeper issued by the Ministry of Skills & in 1994 Jamey established Red Oak Landscaping and incorporated his business in the year 2000. Jameys main role on our board is to recruit more Island members, and to have them develop their own chapter.

    BEn ScHOltEnScholtens Landscaping

    Ben Scholten, owner of Scholtens Landscaping, is on his second go round on the LNB board, having served as president back in the early nineties. Ben is also a journeyman in the Landscape Horticulture trade, and serves as one of our instructors in the block training part of the program.

    BOB OSBORnE Corn Hill Nursery

    There is way too much to say of the Corn Hill Nursery founder in this little space. He started farming in 1980, grafting and growing fruit trees. Expanded gradually to include all things hardy and perennial. Built retail store in 2000. In addition to nursery work he does talks, writes, does a weekly gardening column in the Moncton Times Transcript, does a weekly gardening show on CBC Moncton.     Landscape Newfoundland and Labradors confer-ence for the green industry, the All Commodity Education Sessions (ACES), recognized industry members during the first Landscape Awards of Excellence Gala on Thursday March 22nd at the Comfort Inn in St. Johns. Landscape NL also cel-ebrated their 20-year anniversary as an association at this event.

    The Landscape Awards of Excellence program encour-ages landscape contractors, designers and mainte-nance companies to continue their efforts to raise the industrys image by consistent use of quality materials and competent workmanship.

    Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador handed out five awards for the 2012 year: the award for Best Land-scape Design went to Tract Consulting for the Tower Corporate Campus, the award for Best Residential Con-struction went to Bowering Ponds and Gardens for the Jackman Residence, the award for the Best Commercial Construction went to Russells Land Design for the PHB Building, the award for Best Residential Maintenance went to Murrays Landscape Services for the Williams Residence, and the award for the Best Commercial Main-tenance went to Murrays Landscape Services for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Congratulations to all of our winning member companies!

    LNL also recognized Volunteer of the Year, Don Barry with Servicemaster Greenlawn, as well as our association founding members. The founding members in attendance included Pat Hewitt with Emerald Sod, Pamela Pippy with Pamela Pippy Landscape Design, and Michael Murray with Murrays Horticultural Services Ltd.

    Special guest Canadian Nursery Landscape Association President Bill Stensson was in attendance and brought greetings on behalf or their board and over 3600 members across Canada. Winners of Landscape Newfound-land and Labradors provincial awards will be entered in the Canadian Nursery Landscape Associations (CNLA) National Awards of Landscape Excellence, competing with entries from all over Canada.

    Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador and the CNLAs Landscape Awards of Excellence programs highlight the importance of sustainable landscapes to the well-being and beauty of Canadas increasingly urban environment. The programs recognize the key role played by landscape design, installation and maintenance companies, parks boards and other horticulturists in executing the best management practices that protect our environment including: water cleanliness and conservation; pest management; air quality; waste reduction; and plant selec-tion.

    The two-day ACES conference included presentations for garden centres, nursery and greenhouse growers, lawn care companies and landscape construction/designers to help them prepare for the upcoming season. The event concluded with Landscape Newfoundland and Labradors Annual General Meeting on Friday evening.
