While on a business trip to

Watsonville, Nick and Iwere stranded on the

    freeway for two hours because

of an accident miles ahead. We had already gotten a verylate start, thanks to a faultytimer on our irrigation pumpand we were a little nervousleaving it unattended. After alittle adjusting and a lot ofobserving, we were finally onour way. And now here we sat. This would not be the quick tripwe had hoped.

So we talked about a plan B.Wouldnt it be nice to spend the

night and relax before headinghome? Relaxing? This time of

year? What a stroke of luck! Idecided to give Roberto fromRodriguez Ranch a call and tellhim we were in town. He wasjust getting home from a farm-ers market and was tired butinsisted we visit. What a gra-cious family.

We had a wonderful tour ofRoberto and his brother

Manuels farm. It is alwaysinsightful for one farmer to seehow another farmer works hisland.

The Rodriguez brothers grewup helping their grandfatherfarm strawberries and corn inMexico. Grandpapa once told

little Roberto, Do not stand upand bend over repetitively while

picking the berries. You will tirefaster, stay bent over and youwill build up your muscles andsave your back, a valuable les-son he has practiced to this day!

Roberto moved to Californiaand began farming for an olderbrother 20 years ago. After 10

years, he and Manuel left theirolder brother to start farming

together. The following year, after the birth of Robertosdaughter and the concern ofchemical exposure to their chil-

dren, they decided to try farm-ing organically. So began thelong process of becoming a cer-tified organic farm.

It was interesting to see thedifference in their organically-grown fields compared to theirconventionally-grown fields.

Organic strawberries areplanted in beds consisting ofthree rows of plants per bedwhereas conventionally-grownstrawberry beds consisted of

only two rows of plants per bed.

The organic plants aremuch smaller and lessproductive. An organicfield will have a third

more plants but will pro-duce only a fifth of theberries the conventionalfield will produce.

    Unbelievable!To compensate for the

lower production from hisorganic fields, Robertomust charge more for theorganic berries. Also, thesize of the berry itself willbe smaller, less watery butthe flavor usually surpass-

    es the conventionalstrawberry.

The brothers farmstrawberries, raspberries, blackberries and cool-

    weather vegetables.Starting out small,

    working one field togeth-

er, they eventually grew tofive field sites, employingas many as 15 familymembers. Yep, it is truly afamily-owned and oper-ated farm and it was veryobvious the pride theytake in their fields.

Roberto wanted toshow and share every-thing. My husband andRoberto have the samepassion for farming and

enjoyed each others com-pany immensely. In one field, we dug out

handfuls of fingerlingpotatoes from soil soloose that we didnt needshovels. We snapped offan impressively huge earof corn in another. We atered and golden raspber-ries and compared grow-ing habits of blackberriesthat we both grow.

We witnessed the deerdestroying four to six feetof berry plants surround-ing the entire field and feltRobertos helplessness. The deer werent afraid ofthem and were rather putout that they were beingchased out nightly.

We shared horror sto-ries of gopher and squirreldamage too. Of course,

    we did plenty of sampling

    of strawberries along theway, lip-smacking!

Roberto farms in acommunity that is satu-rated with berries and hastrouble finding outlets forhis crops in the surround-ing cities. He decided the

only way to survive wouldbe to travel out of his areato sell his luscious berries.

The climate is muchcooler (did I mention wefroze and had to find jack-ets) than ours, whichenables Roberto to grow

winter crops year round. So Rodriguez Ranch

may not be a local grower(50 miles or less). But withhis large assortment of

vegetables such as broc-coli, cauliflower and arti-chokes (just to mention afew), not usually availablelocally this time of year,

we welcome him. When we suffer losses

due to high heat in our

local fields he is able to fillthe void with his sweetberries. Rodriguez Ranchhas developed a large fol-lowing of loyal customersand is a highly respectedfarmer. His producereflects the pride anddedication in every bite!

Alot of gardeners tell methey have a hard timepruning their fruit trees.

I think they are afraid that

they will kill their tree if theymake an improper cut whilepruning.

But if you take your time andhave a plan before you start cut-ting, it is really pretty simple.

Are you wondering why I amwriting about pruning whenwinter is many months away? Most gardeners have beentaught that winter is the time toprune fruit trees.

    However, very few gardeners

know that the best way to con-trol the size of their fruit tree is

with summer pruning. So nowis the time to start your summerpruning chores.

If you have a typical subur-

ban backyard, you probablydont want your fruit trees togrow too large. The ideal size for

your backyard fruit trees wouldbe as high as you can reachfrom the ground or standing ona short stool.

    There are many advantages

to keeping your trees smaller. The most obvious is for easierharvesting but also it is easier tonet a small tree to keep birdsfrom eating fruit.

You can also fit more varieties

in your backyard if your treesare kept smaller than a typicalorchard sized fruit tree. Sum-mer pruning is the easiest wayto keep fruit trees small.

Reducing the size of your treeby pruning in summer reducesthe trees ability to conduct

photosynthesis (food manufac-ture), which will result in reduc-ing the amount the tree willform new growth.

So lets get pruning. Just likein winter pruning, you should

start by making sure you havecleaned out the inside branchesto maintain an open vaseshape, which allows for good

sun exposure and air circula-tion.Next, look for any diseased

and/or damaged limbs andremove them. It is sometimesharder to see all the branches

when leaves are on the tree soyou may have to wait until win-ter pruning to get all theunwanted branches removed.

Finally, you should pruneback the size of your tree. Once

you have chosen a height for

your tree, dont let it get anytaller. This height is totally up to

you and may vary from personto person.

When you get vigorous grow-ing branches that are above

your chosen height, you need toprune those branches back.

You can cut new growth back byat least half.

Remember to look for anybranches that are growing tooclose together and for anybranches that are crossing. Youdont want your branchestouching each other! If they are, then you should eliminate oneof the branches. Pruning getseasier the more you do it.

If you do regular summerpruning, then your pruning in

winter will be a lot easier andquicker.

    Happy pruning!
