Free Delivery We will deliver free to a 300 miles radius of our ranch on all bulls $2000 and over at our convenience and co-operate with the buyer to get full delivery at a minimal cost. Bulls may be returned to the ranch after the sale, and they will be cared for at no cost for 60 days. Our Super Bull Guarantee will apply. A fee of $1.50/hd/day will be charged after April 21st. Later delivery will be at the buyer’s expense. We encourage you to leave the bulls with us for 60 days so they can be semen tested and ultrasounded before delivery. Conditions The cattle will be sold singly or in pairs or groups to suit the buyers. The auctioneer will settle disputes as to bids by declaring all bids off and reselling the animal in question. Bar JZ Ranches reserves the right to reject any bid.

Catalog Material Special care has been taken to insure accuracy in the matter of EPDs, pedigrees, and other information included in this catalog. Any corrections will be announced on sale day. Bar JZ will not be respon-sible for catalog errors. Some of the bulls have been DNA tested for the homozygous polled trait. The test is highly accurate but is not a guarantee.

Health of the Cattle The cattle have been calfhood vaccinated for 7-way clostridium, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, haemophilus, pasteurella and poured with ivermection. Health papers will be available. International health papers will be at the buyer’s expense.

Super Bull Guarantee This guarantee is designed to take the risk of buying a better bull. All bulls are fully guaranteed breeders for the first breeding season. If a bull should prove otherwise, satisfactory replacement or refund will be made. In addition, all Bar JZ bulls are guaranteed for the first breeding season against accidents, death or dissatisfaction for any rea-son. We reserve the right to require a bull be returned to Bar JZ Ranches at the buyer’s expense, before any exchanges or price adjustments are made. Registration papers must be returned if the bull is registered. We will give you an adjustment that can be used to purchase another bull, of 75% of the purchase price minus the weight at date of purchase, times 75¢ per pound. For example, if you buy a 1000 pound bull for $2000, and he dies during the first breeding season, he will be adjusted as follows:

$2000 (purchase price) x 75% = $15001000 lbs. (purchase weight) x 75¢ = -750 Credit to purchase a new bull = $750

If the bull did not die, but could be sold, the buyer would also have the market value to apply to a new bull. Minimum exchange price will be $250. To qualify for adjustment, we must be notified of intent to have the bull adjusted and allowed to examine said bull. In case of death, buyer must furnish proof to our satisfaction.

Terms Terms are cash or check. Please make settlement for the cattle prior to leaving or loading out. Volume Discount 5% will apply to each bull after 3 head.

Liability We will do our best to see there are no accidents (and we have never had one), but we will not be reponsible for any accidents that might occur. You attend at your own risk.

We have provided EPD graphs for the Polled Hereford bulls and females.

The percentile line at the bottom of the graph refers to the bull’s rank compared to the average for the breed. The 50% line is the breed average. If a bull’s EPD is average, there will be no shaded bar either left or right of 50%. Everything to the right of 50% is above average. When using the graphs, one must be careful not to put too much emphasis on the position of the graph bar for an individual trait. Remember, these are young bulls without progeny and their EPDs will change--sometimes only slightly and somtimes dramatically. Also, a bar on the graph will go from a strong positive to a strong negative with only a slight change in the EPD. For example, in the Hereford breed a +20 EPD for milk is in the upper 30%, while a +14 moves the graph bar way down to the lower 75%. Similarly, in the Limousin breed a +1.2 EPD for birth weight is in the upper 30%, while a +2.4 EPD is in the lower 60%.

When an EPD trait on the graph shows no bar, that EPD equals the breed average. We hope the graphs will be an aid for you, the buyer, to quickly find the bulls that are the strongest for the traits that you consider most important for your herd’s needs. Fellow Cattlemen:

It seems unusual for me to be writing this correspondence in the winter. As many of you know, for

years our spring bull sale has been on the third week of April. We decided to move the sale date up

to give you, the customer, the opportunity to purchase our sale offering before the last sale of the

year. The bulls will be younger, and you may not be ready to care for new bulls at home, so we will

keep the bulls at our ranch free for 60 days. They can be left longer if necessary for a feed charge.

I don’t believe I have ever seen a more optimistic outlook for the future of the cattle business than

the one I see today. With the nation’s cow herd at the lowest level since 1955 and the growing

demand for beef in the developing countries, the future for the beef producers looks rewarding.

Here at Bar JZ Ranches, we have been putting pressure on our breeding program to produce

seedstock with lighter birth weights while still maintaining desirable performance. At the same

time we have also been selecting for structural soundness, carcass and maternal traits, and fertility.

We think our success with this program shows up in the number of moderate frame, easy fleshing,

calving ease bulls with desirable carcass traits offered in this sale.

undeRstAnding tHe dAtA

The Mainstream Terminal Index ($MTI) is a multiple trait selection index expressed in dollars per head. It measures differences in expected profit per carcass produced on a mainstream grid. It is determined by economic values and genetics associated with post weaning growth, yield grade and quality grade. The $MTI is composed of the following EPD traits: weaning weight, yearling weight, yield grade and marbling score. No consideration is given for calving ease or maternal traits. These must be considered separately. For example, a bull with a +$55 for $MTI would be expected to return $15 more per carcass produced than a bull with a +$40 for $MTI ($55 - $40 = $15) due to combined genetic merit for post-weaning growth and mainstream carcass merit passed on to offspring. If each bull produced 25 carcasses per year over the next four years, the +$55 bull would be expected to produce an extra $2,500 return over the +$40 bull: ($55 – $40) x 25 carcasses per year x 4 years of service = $2,500

$MTI EPD -- What Does It Mean?

Marbling -- How Important Is It? The price spread between choice and select grade carcasses is hovering around $150. Marbling is one of the main drivers of qual-ity grade. If your cattle are going to slaughter on a mainstream grid, either for you or your feedlot buyer, marbling may be the difference between a profit or loss.

Trait Leaders -- What Are They? Proven Sire Trait Leaders -Sired at least one progeny born on or after January 1, 2009 -Possess birth & weaning EPDs with .50 accuracy or greater -Possess a .50 accuracy or higher for the trait in which leader status is designated except the $MTI, for which all component traits must have a .50 accuracy or higher -To be listed as a trait leader for a specific trait, sires must be in the top 10% of the breed for that specific trait, except stayability which is the top 20%. Young Sire Trait Leaders -Born on our after July 1, 2009 -Must have numeric accuracies for birth, weaning and yearling EPDs if born in 2008 or 2009 and for birth and weaning EPD if born in 2010 -To be listed as a trait leader for a specific trait, young sires must be in the top 1% of the breed for that specific trait, except stayability which is the top 20%.

Dam Trait Leaders -Active status and have a 2009, 2010 or 2011 born progeny -Possess a minimum .30 accuracy to qualify for birth, weaning, yearling, and milk trait leader lists; and minimum .25 accuracy for the calving ease direct and maternal, scrotal, stayability and docility trait leader lists -To be listed as a trait leader for a specific trait, dams must be in the top 1% of the breed for that specific trait, except stayability which is the top 20%.
