Since March of 1921, UBC student-athletes have been gathering at the Big Block Banquet to welcome the newest members into the Block Club and to celebrate the success of a season gone by. More recently, with the inclusion of the UBC Sports Hall of Fame inductions, the Block Banquet has brought together past T-Bird greats with the stars of today and tomorrow.

This evening, 154 athletes, coaches, trainers and managers will join the 8,000-member Block Club; several will join the impressive list of past award winners; and five former athletes, two builders and two teams will take their rightful place in the Hall of Fame along side UBC sports luminaries from years gone by.

These latest inductees, together with the biographies and photos of athletes, builders and teams previously enshrined, can be viewed at www.ubcsportshalloffame.com. These distinguished UBC’ers are also showcased in our new Hall of Fame located in the foyer of the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

uBc sports Hall of fameJoanne Ross - AthleteIn 1994, Montreal native Joanne Ross turned down full-ride scholarship offers from UCLA and other top US universities to play volleyball for UBC. In each of the next five seasons, she led the Thunderbirds from her middle blocker position to CIS national championship appearances, including silver medals in 1997 and 1999. Mid-way through her UBC career, she was named to Canada’s national team, but maintained an extraordinary commitment to both the national team and to her UBC team mates. She continued to play at the international level until 2002, including a season of professional play in Belgium as well as two appearances in the World University Games.

Tom Jones - AthleteCanadian Volleyball Hall of Fame member Tom Jones demonstrated extreme and unusual athleticism at UBC from 1974 to 1977 by playing in both the setter and hitter positions. He led UBC to two Canada West championships, a CIS national title in 1976, and made four appearances in the World University Games. While still a UBC Science student, he was named to Canada’s national team in 1977, and began a long international career consisting of over 250 matches, including two appearances in the Pan American Games, two World Championships, a World Cup and the 1984 Olympics. The many highlights include a bronze medal finish with Canada at the 1979 Pan American Games and a fourth place finish at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Canada’s best-ever Olympic result. Tom left the national team in 1985 to play seven seasons of professional volleyball in Italy and France, highlighted by being a member of the 1987 French First Division Champions and the 1989 semi-finalist for the European Cup.

Tracey Lipp-Derrheim - AthleteA member of UBC’s women’s golf team from 1990 to 1994, Tracey Lipp accumulated a long list of achievements on the golf course both before and after her graduation. In 1992 she became the first UBC golfer to win a NCAA tournament after carding the lowest 54-hole total in the University of Wyoming Invitational. She also won the Canadian ladies amateur crown in 1995, joining a list that includes former LPGA Tour professionals Jocelyn Bourassa, Dawn Coe-Jones and A.J. Eathorne. She represented Canada at the 1995 Commonwealth Championships in Sydney, Australia and at the 1996 World Amateur Championships in the Philippines. Tracey began her professional career in 1997 and competed on the BMO Canadian Women’s Tour, the Ladies’ European

tour and the Futures Tour. In 2000 she was one of just four Canadians to qualify for the final two rounds of the LPGA du Maurier Classic at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club.

Pat Onstad - AthleteSoccer goalkeeper Pat Onstad helped lead the Thunderbirds to a record 54-game unbeaten streak in the early 1990’s, and three CIS Championships. He was a two-time All Canadian during his UBC career and the CIS Championship MVP in 1994. As a member of Canada’s national team, he played in a total of 57 international matches, more than any other Canadian goalkeeper. He entered pro soccer in 1987 at the age of 18 with the Vancouver 86ers and was eventually a member of three Major League Soccer Championship teams. In 2007 with DC United, he led the league in save percentage and goals-against on route to setting a league record 0.82 goals-against average. After a stellar 23-year professional career, Pat retired in 2010 and became a member of the coaching staff of DC United.

Frank Smith - BuilderOne of Canadian university football’s most iconic figures, Frank Smith coached the Thunderbirds for 21 seasons from 1974 to 1994 and led the team to a record 126 victories, including five Canada West Championships, four Vanier Cup appearances and Vanier Cup Championship victories in 1982 and 1986. He received the Frank Tindall Award as CIS Coach of the Year in 1978 and 1987, and a total of 47 of his players went on to play in the CFL. A guard and linebacker for five seasons in the Canadian Football League in the 1950’s, Frank Smith made guest coaching appearances at 11 CFL training camps during his time with UBC, and subsequently served on the coaching staff of both the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1995) and BC Lions (1996-2000).

Rick Noonan - BuilderAfter honing his skills as an athletic trainer with Memorial Cup champion hockey teams and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Rick Noonan left his Ontario home and came west in 1970 to join the UBC Athletic Department, where he contributed to numerous championships for UBC’s football, hockey and basketball teams. At the same time he remained committed to his duties as head trainer for Canada’s national hockey team, eventually resulting in him being appointed general manager of Canada’s 1980 Olympic team as well as men’s athletic director at UBC. Equipped with business expertise and a lifelong love for the game of hockey, he was later appointed as general manager of both the Thunderbird Winter Sports Centre and the Thunderbirds hockey team. Among his many contributions, Rick founded and chaired the Thunderbird Hockey Alumni Association’s Father Bauer Golf Classic, which over the course of 25 years has raised one million dollars for UBC hockey scholarships.

Barbara Robertson - AthleteIn addition to being one of the finest players in UBC women’s basketball history, Barbara Robertson was also in many ways a pioneer of her sport. In her first season as an 18-year-old in 1960, she was credited with introducing the jump shot to the UBC team, dispelling the myth that women were incapable of executing the shot. In an era that pre-dated national championships for women, she helped UBC to a Western Canadian University championship in that 1960 season, and a repeat performance the following year. After graduating in 1964, she was named to Canada’s first-ever women’s national team. Barbara played for four years with the national team and was instrumental in Canada’s bronze medal finish at the 1967 Pan American Games.

1960 UBC Rowing Eight - TeamThe UBC-VRC men’s eight were by no means favourites to win the gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics, particularly given the renowned strength of the German crew that had been selected from among the nation’s 40,000 oarsmen, and who had trained together for a full two years and seen much international competition in Europe prior to the Games. But the pre-race odds meant nothing to Coach Frank Read and his scrappy crew of students as they made ready for the final on the Lago di Albano course. With a crowd of some 20,000 looking on, the UBC crew remained even with the favoured boat until, with 200 meters to go, the Germans squeezed ahead to win in a sub-six-minute time, the second fastest to that point in Olympic history. The 1960 Olympic silver medalists were Walter d’Hondt, Archie MacKinnon, Bill McKerlich, Don Arnold, John Lecky, Glen Mervyn, Nelson Kuhn, David Anderson, Sohen Biln (cox), Keith Donald (spare) and Lorne Loomer (spare).

1962-63 Thunderbird Hockey - TeamCoached by Father David Bauer, the 1962-63 Thunderbirds hockey team came within a hair’s breadth of capturing UBC’s first ever Canadian university hockey championships. The team began the season with a 1-1 tie in an exhibition game with the famed Trail Smoke Eaters, who represented Canada just two months later at the World Hockey Championships. The regular season began with a two-game sweep over the Alberta Golden Bears for

the Hamber Cup. The Thunderbirds finished atop the Western Canadian conference with a record of 8-1-1 in the short 10-game schedule, outscoring their opponents 42-20. They then clinched a first-ever Western Canadian conference title by outscoring the Manitoba Bisons 11-2 in a two-game total-point series. It was then on to Kingston, Ontario where UBC defeated the University of Sherbrooke 6-2 to qualify for the championship final against McMaster University, which had won 14 straight games and not lost to a Canadian team all season. The final result was a narrow 3-2 loss for UBC, but the conclusion of a historic season. Father Bauer’s team members were Terry O’Malley, Mickey McDowell, Ken Broderick, Ken Smith, Ralph Lortie, Barry McKenzie, Stu Gibbs, Gary Unsworth, Boone Strother, Dave Chambers, Peter Kelly, Mike Smith, Bob Parker, Cliff Russell, John McLeod, Les Bergman, Bruce Kitsch, Jack Harris, Ken Ronalds, Gary Morris, Bob Hindmarch (assistant coach) and Bill Sturn (manager).

tAc Buzz moore leadership Award

The leadership award was established in 1995-96 by the Thunderbird Athletes Council. The award is unique in that it represents peer recognition for outstanding qualities and achievements in individuals. It is meant to represent UBC student athletes who would otherwise remain too often unrecognized. The award is meant to acknowledge students at UBC who are outstanding athletes, leaders, contributors and, above all, outstanding people.

n 2008 the TAC Leadership Award was re-named after the legendary Dr. Douglas “Buzz” Moore, a member of the Athletics Department for more than 40 years. Buzz arrived at UBC in 1964 and worked full-time with the Athletics Department until his retirement in 1986. During that time he filled various roles – everything from coaching to alumni relations to business manager – but he is best knows a being the heart and soul of the UBC Big Block Club.

Even after his retirement, Buzz worked tirelessly to build alumni support and due to his efforts, the Big Block Club has grown to over 8,000 members. Every year, T-Birds old and new come together at the annual Big Block banquet to celebrate the best of UBC Athletics.

Although Buzz passed away in March 2011, his memory will live on forever.

thunderbird Alumni rings This year marks the fifth annual awarding of Thunderbird Alumni Rings. In partnership with the UBC Alumni Association and its sponsor, UBC Alumni MBNA MasterCard®, Thunderbird Rings are being awarded to members of UBC varsity teams who have completed their eligibility and will be graduating this year.

The work of First Nation’s carver Rick Johnson, the Thunderbird alumni ring will symbolize the commitment of UBC’s athletes to the pursuit of excellence and serve as a constant reminder of their affinity to UBC and their years as a Thunderbird.

Proudly worn on the small finger, Thunderbird alumni will be easily recognizable to one another and should serve as an opportunity to reconnect with fellow varsity alumni in any setting.

A special thank you to the UBC Alumni Association for helping to make this initiative happen. If you are already a Thunderbird alumni member and would like a ring, please contact Steve Tuckwood at (604) 822-1972 for details on the program.

For more information on all alumni services chosen with care by your alumni association, please see www.alumni.ubc.ca or call 604-822-3313.
