Fuel Economy Gauge

Metric

English

This gauge shows when the vehicleis operating at a fuel efficient point.

Driving behavior that improves fuelefficiency makes the fuel indicatormove to the high efficiency band onthe fuel gauge.

See Fuel Economy Gauge onpage 5‑3 for more information.

Automatic Engine Start/Stop FeatureStart the engine as you would anyother engine. See “Starting theEngine” in the owner manual formore information on starting. Thehybrid system provides very quietengine starting. If pulling a trailerwith trailer brakes, see TrailerTowing on page 9‑16 for moreinformation.

Auto Stop

The vehicle has an Auto Stopfeature. After a successful enginestart, the engine may turn off andoperate in the Auto Stop mode.

Keep your foot firmly on the brakepedal until you are ready for thevehicle to move.

Engine OFF and AUTO STOPmodes are indicated on thetachometer display. When thetachometer needle indicates OFF,the engine is not running and willremain off until the ignition key isplaced in the START position or aremote vehicle start is performed. When the tachometer needleindicates AUTO STOP, the hybridsystem is on, the engine is notrunning, but may Auto Start at anytime without notice. See Tachometeron page 5‑3 for more information.

1-4 In Brief

A chime will sound if the driver dooris opened while in Auto Stop as areminder that the ignition switch isnot in the LOCK/OFF position.Always turn the ignition switch toLOCK/OFF and remove the keyfrom the ignition switch when exitingthe vehicle.

Auto Start

The vehicle also has an Auto Startfeature. The engine will remain offwhile in Auto Stop mode untilvehicle conditions require theengine to run. The near-instantstarting of the engine from AutoStop mode is called Auto Start.

EV Mode

The vehicle also has an EV modewhich uses only the electric motorto move the vehicle. With lightacceleration, the vehicle will drive inEV mode. EV mode is unavailablewhen the vehicle is out of fuel.

For more information on Auto Stop,Auto Start, and EV Mode, seeStarting the Vehicle on page 9‑2.

Regenerative BrakingRegenerative braking enables theelectric drive motor to operate as agenerator when coasting or braking.Energy from the moving vehiclerecharges the hybrid battery.

The hydraulic disc brakes work withthe regenerative braking to insureeffective braking.

The braking system is computercontrolled and blends theregenerative braking with theconventional hydraulic disc brakesto meet any requirements fordeceleration. Because the controllerapplies the hydraulic brakes throughits high pressure accumulator, youmay occasionally hear the motordriven pump when it recharges thesystem. This is normal. In the eventof a controller problem, the brakepedal may be harder to push andthe stopping distance may belonger.

See Regenerative Braking onpage 9‑15.

{ WARNING

Exiting the vehicle, without firstshifting into P (Park), may causethe vehicle to move, and you orothers can be seriously injured.Because the vehicle has theAutomatic Engine Start/Stopfeature, the vehicle’s enginemight seem to be shut off whenyou come to a complete stop. However, once the brake pedal isreleased, the vehicle can move. The vehicle’s engine can alsorestart at any time.

Shift to P (Park) and turn theignition to LOCK/OFF, beforeexiting the vehicle.

Start the engine as you would anyother engine. See “Starting theEngine” in the owner manual formore information on starting. If pulling a trailer with trailerbrakes, see Towing Equipment onpage 9‑17 for more information.

Auto Stop

The vehicle has an Auto Stopfeature. After a successful enginestart, the engine may turn off andoperate in the Auto Stop mode. Some of the vehicle conditions thatallow the engine to stop running andenter the Auto Stop mode are:. Ignition switch is in the ON/RUN

position.. The hood is closed.. The gear selector is in P (Park),

R (Reverse), N (Neutral) orD (Drive).

. The hybrid battery is at anacceptable state of charge.

. The hybrid battery voltage, temperature or power limitsare not exceeded. In very hotconditions, Auto Stop may beunavailable until the hybridbattery has cooled.

. The engine is at operatingtemperature.

. The vehicle may enter Auto Stopafter a remote vehicle start.

With your foot off the brake and thevehicle on level ground, the hybriddrive motor may cause the vehicleto roll slowly forward, even when theengine is in Auto Stop.

Some of the vehicle conditionsthat may cause the engine toAuto Start are:. The hood is opened.. The gear selector is in

M (Manual Mode).. The hybrid battery state of

charge is too low.. The hybrid battery voltage,

temperature or power limits areexceeded.

. A remote vehicle start has beenrequested.

. The engine is not at operatingtemperature.

. Acceleration demands requirethe use of the engine.

EV Mode

The vehicle also has an ElectricVehicle (EV) mode which usesonly the electric motor to move thevehicle. With light acceleration, thevehicle will drive in EV mode. EVmode is unavailable when thevehicle is out of fuel.

If increased acceleration isrequired, or the vehicle reachesapproximately 40 km/h (30 mph), theengine will start automatically. Theengine shuts off at speeds below40 km/h (25 mph) unless thetransmission is in M (Manual Mode)or Auto Stop is disabled.

During heavy acceleration, both theengine and hybrid electric motorssupply power. A sensation similar toa transmission gear change can befelt as the transmission changesmodes. Engine RPM may remainabove 4,000 RPM for a longerperiod during hard acceleration.

Leaving the Vehicle with theEngine Running

{ WARNING

It can be dangerous to leave thevehicle with the engine running. The vehicle could move suddenlyif the shift lever is not fully inP (Park) with the parking brakefirmly set.

If you have four-wheel drive andthe transfer case is in N (Neutral),the vehicle will be free to roll, even if the shift lever is inP (Park). So be sure the transfercase is in a drive gear — not inN (Neutral).

(Continued)

WARNING (Continued)

And, if you leave the vehiclewith the engine running, it couldoverheat and even catch fire. Youor others could be injured. Do notleave the vehicle with the enginerunning unless you have to.

If you have to leave the vehicle withthe engine running, be sure yourvehicle is in P (Park) and theparking brake is firmly set beforeyou leave it. After you move the shiftlever into P (Park), hold the regularbrake pedal down. Then, see if youcan move the shift lever away fromP (Park) without first pulling it towardyou. If you can, it means that theshift lever was not fully locked intoP (Park).

Torque Lock

If parking on a hill and thetransmission not shifted intoP (Park) properly, the weightof the vehicle may put too muchforce on the parking pawl in thetransmission. You may find itdifficult to pull the shift lever outof P (Park). This is called torquelock. To prevent torque lock, set theparking brake and then shift intoP (Park) properly before you leavethe driver seat. To find out how, seeShifting Into Park on page 9‑5.

When you are ready to drive, movethe shift lever out of P (Park) beforeyou release the parking brake.

If torque lock does occur, you mayneed to have another vehicle pushyours a little uphill to take some ofthe pressure from the parking pawlin the transmission, then you will beable to pull the shift lever out ofP (Park).

9-8 Driving and Operating

When parked on a hill, especiallywhen the vehicle has a heavyload, you may notice an increase inthe effort to shift out of P (Park). SeeShifting Into Park on page 9‑5.

{ WARNING

It is dangerous to get out of thevehicle if the shift lever is not fullyin P (Park) with the parking brakefirmly set. The vehicle can roll.

Do not leave the vehicle whenthe engine is running unless youhave to. If you have left theengine running, the vehicle canmove suddenly. You or otherscould be injured. To be sure thevehicle will not move, even whenyou are on fairly level ground, always set the parking brakeand move the shift lever toP (Park). See Shifting Into Parkon page 9‑5. If you arepulling a trailer, see “DrivingCharacteristics and Towing Tips”in the owner manual.

{ WARNING

If you have Four-Wheel Drive, thevehicle will be free to roll— evenif the shift lever is in P (Park)— ifthe transfer case is in Neutral. So,be sure the transfer case is in adrive gear, Two-Wheel Drive Highor Four-Wheel Drive High orFour-Wheel Drive Low— not inNeutral. See Shifting Into Parkon page 9‑5.

R (Reverse): Use this gear toback up.

Notice: Shifting to R (Reverse)while the vehicle is movingforward could damage thetransmission. The repairs wouldnot be covered by the vehiclewarranty. Shift to R (Reverse) onlyafter the vehicle is stopped.

To rock the vehicle back and forth toget out of snow, ice, or sand withoutdamaging the transmission, see “Ifthe Vehicle is Stuck” in the ownermanual.

N (Neutral): In this position, theengine and transmission are notconnected with the wheels. Torestart the engine when thevehicle is already moving, useN (Neutral) only.

{ WARNING

Shifting into a drive gear while theengine is running at high speed isdangerous. Unless your foot isfirmly on the brake pedal, thevehicle could move very rapidly. You could lose control and hitpeople or objects. Do not shiftinto a drive gear while the engineis running at high speed.

Notice: Shifting out of P (Park)or N (Neutral) with the enginerunning at high speed maydamage the transmission. Therepairs would not be covered bythe vehicle warranty. Be sure theengine is not running at highspeed when shifting the vehicle.

D (Drive): This position is fornormal driving. It provides the bestfuel economy. If you need morepower for passing, and you are:. Going less than about 55 km/h

(35 mph), push the acceleratorpedal about halfway down.

. Going about 55 km/h (35 mph) ormore, push the accelerator allthe way down.

D (Drive) or M (Manual Mode) canbe used when towing a trailer, carrying a heavy load, drivingon steep hills, or for off-roaddriving. You may want to shift thetransmission to a lower gearselection if the transmission shiftstoo often.

Downshifting the transmission inslippery road conditions could resultin skidding. See “Loss of Control” inthe owner manual.

When temperatures are very cold, the transmission's gear shifting maybe delayed, providing more stableshifts until the engine warms up.Shifts may be more noticeable witha cold transmission. This differencein shifting is normal.

M (Manual Mode): This positionlets drivers select the range ofgears appropriate for current drivingconditions. If the vehicle has thisfeature, see Manual Mode onpage 9‑10.

Notice: Spinning the tiresor holding the vehicle inone place on a hill using only theaccelerator pedal may damagethe transmission. The repair willnot be covered by the vehiclewarranty. If you are stuck, do notspin the tires. When stopping ona hill, use the brakes to hold thevehicle in place.

The vehicle has a shift stabilizationfeature that adjusts the transmissionshifting to the current drivingconditions to reduce rapid upshiftsand downshifts. If the shiftstabilization feature determines thata current vehicle speed cannot bemaintained, the transmission doesnot upshift. In some cases, thismay appear to be a delayed shift, however the transmission isoperating normally.

1. Move the shift lever to theM (Manual Mode).

2. Press the plus/minus button toupshift or downshift selecting thedesired range of gears.

A number displays next to the M,indicating the current gear thathas been selected. The numberdisplayed in the gear indicator isthe highest gear that can be used.

The vehicle can automatically shiftto lower gears as it adjusts todriving conditions. When 3 (Third) isselected, 1 (First) through 3 (Third)gears are automatically shifted bythe vehicle, but 4 (Fourth) cannot beused until it is selected.

The Range Selection Mode controlsthe vehicle and engine speed whiledriving down a hill or towing a trailer,by allowing you to select a desiredrange of gears.

When you move the shift leverinto M, the transmission will defaultto M4. In this gear range, effectiveengine braking occurs at speedsabove 72 km/h (45 mph).

Pushing the minus (−) button on theshift lever reduces the gear range.

In the M3 gear range, effectiveengine braking occurs at speedsabove 56 km/h (35 mph).

In the M2 gear range, effectiveengine braking occurs at speedsabove 40 km/h (25 mph).

In the M1 gear range, effectiveengine braking occurs at speedsabove 16 km/h (10 mph).

When operating in M (ManualMode), Auto Stop is disabled. For better vehicle efficiency, operate the vehicle in D (Drive)not M (Manual Mode).

Drive Systems

Four-Wheel DriveIf the vehicle has four-wheel drive, you can send the engine's drivingpower to all four wheels for extratraction. Read the following beforeusing four-wheel drive.

Notice: Driving on clean, drypavement in Four-Wheel DriveHigh or Four-Wheel Drive Low foran extended period of time maycause premature wear on thevehicle's powertrain. Do notdrive on clean, dry pavementin Four-Wheel Drive High orFour-Wheel Drive Low forextended periods of time.

While driving on clean dry pavementand during tight turns, you mayexperience a vibration in thesteering system.

The vehicle has StabiliTrak. Shiftinginto Four-Wheel Drive Low will turnTraction Control and StabiliTrak off.See “StabiliTrak System” in theowner manual.

Front Axle

The front axle engages anddisengages automatically when youshift the transfer case. Some delayfor the axle to engage or disengageis normal.

Automatic Transfer Case

The transfer case knob is locatedto the left of the instrument panelcluster.

Use this dial to shift into and out offour-wheel drive.

You can choose among five drivingsettings:

Indicator lights in the switches showyou which setting you are in. Theindicator lights will come on brieflywhen you turn on the ignition andthe last chosen setting will stay on.

Page 36: 2012 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid M - GMC · 2020-04-03 · Cadillac Escalade Hybrid - 2012 Black plate (2,1) ii Introduction The names, logos, emblems, slogans, vehicle model names,

9-12 Driving and Operating

If the lights do not come on, youshould take the vehicle to yourdealer for service. An indicator lightwill flash while shifting. It will stay onwhen the shift is completed. If forsome reason the transfer casecannot make a requested shift, it willreturn to the last chosen setting.

2 m (Two-Wheel Drive High): Thissetting is used for driving in moststreet and highway situations. The front axle is not engaged intwo-wheel drive. This setting alsoprovides the best fuel economy.

AUTO (Automatic Four-WheelDrive): This setting is ideal foruse when road surface tractionconditions are variable. Whendriving your vehicle in AUTO, thefront axle is engaged, but thevehicle's power is primarily sent tothe rear wheels. When the vehicle'ssoftware determines a need formore traction, the system willtransfer more power to the front

wheels. Driving in this mode resultsin slightly lower fuel economy thanTwo-Wheel Drive High.

4 m (Four-Wheel Drive High): Usethe four-wheel high position whenyou need extra traction, such ason snowy or icy roads or in mostoff-road situations. This setting alsoengages the front axle to help drivethe vehicle. This is the best settingto use when plowing snow.

4 n (Four-Wheel Drive Low): Thissetting also engages the front axleand delivers extra torque. You maynever need this setting. It sendsmaximum power to all four wheels. You might choose Four-Wheel DriveLow if you are driving off-road indeep sand, deep mud, deep snow, and while climbing or descendingsteep hills.

The vehicle has StabiliTrak. Shiftinginto Four-Wheel-Drive Low will turnTraction Control and StabiliTrak off.See “StabiliTrak System” in theowner manual.

{ WARNING

Shifting the transfer case toN (Neutral) can cause the vehicleto roll even if the transmission isin P (Park). You or someone elsecould be seriously injured. Besure to set the parking brakebefore placing the transfer case inN (Neutral). See “Parking Brake”in the owner manual for moreinformation.

N (Neutral): Shift the vehicle'stransfer case to N (Neutral) onlywhen towing the vehicle. See“Recreational Vehicle Towing” or“Towing Your Vehicle” in the ownermanual.

Excessively shifting the transfercase into or out of the differentmodes may cause the transfer caseto enter the shift protection mode. This will protect the transfer casefrom possible damage and will onlyallow the transfer case to respondto one shift per 10 seconds. Thetransfer case may stay in this modefor up to three minutes.

Brakes

Regenerative BrakingRegenerative braking is a hybridtechnology that enables the electricdrive motor to operate as agenerator when coasting or braking.Energy from the moving vehiclerecharges the hybrid battery.

The hydraulic disc brakes work withthe regenerative braking to insureeffective braking, such as when ahigh braking demand is requested.

The braking system is computercontrolled and blends theregenerative braking with theconventional hydraulic disc brakesto meet any requirements fordeceleration. The controllerinterprets the braking requestand uses regenerative braking, conventional hydraulic braking or acombination of both as necessary.

It depends on how the rig is used. For example, speed, altitude, roadgrades, outside temperature andhow much the vehicle is used to pulla trailer are all important. It candepend on any special equipmenton the vehicle, and the amount oftongue weight the vehicle can carry.

Maximum trailer weight iscalculated assuming only the driveris in the tow vehicle and it has allthe required trailering equipment. The weight of additional optionalequipment, passengers and cargo inthe tow vehicle must be subtractedfrom the maximum trailer weight.

Use the following charts todetermine how much the vehiclecan weigh, based upon the vehiclemodel and options.

Automatic TransmissionFluid

When to Check and ChangeAutomatic Transmission Fluid

It is usually not necessary tocheck the transmission fluid level. The only reason for fluid loss is atransmission leak or overheatingthe transmission. If a small leak issuspected, then use the following

checking procedures to check thefluid level. However, if there is alarge leak, then it may be necessaryto have the vehicle towed to adealer and have it repaired beforedriving the vehicle further.

Notice: Use of the incorrectautomatic transmission fluidmay damage the vehicle, and thedamages may not be covered bythe vehicle warranty. Always usethe automatic transmission fluidlisted in Recommended Fluidsand Lubricants on page 11‑2.

Change the fluid and filter at thescheduled maintenance intervals.See “Scheduled Maintenance” inthe owner manual. Be sure to usethe transmission fluid listed inRecommended Fluids andLubricants on page 11‑2.

How to Check AutomaticTransmission Fluid

Notice: Too much or toolittle fluid can damage thetransmission. Too much canmean that some of the fluid couldcome out and fall on hot engineparts or exhaust system parts, starting a fire. Too little fluidcould cause the transmission tooverheat. Be sure to get anaccurate reading if checking thetransmission fluid.

Before checking the fluid level, prepare the vehicle as follows:

1. Start the engine and park thevehicle on a level surface. Keepthe engine running.

2. Apply the parking brake andplace the shift lever in P (Park).

3. With your foot on the brakepedal, move the shift leverthrough each gear range, pausing for about three secondsin each range. Then, move theshift lever back to P (Park).

4. Allow the engine to idle(500–800 RPM) for at leastone minute. Slowly release thebrake pedal.

5. Keep the engine running andpress the Trip/Fuel button ortrip odometer reset stem untilTRANS TEMP (TransmissionTemperature) displays on theDriver Information Center (DIC).

6. Using the TRANS TEMPreading, determine and performthe appropriate checkprocedure. If the TRANS TEMPreading is not within the requiredtemperature ranges, allow thevehicle to cool, or operate thevehicle until the appropriatetransmission fluid temperature isreached.

Cold Check Procedure

Use this procedure only as areference to determine if thetransmission has enough fluidto be operated safely until a hotcheck procedure can be made. The hot check procedure is themost accurate method to check thefluid level. Perform the hot checkprocedure at the first opportunity.Use this cold check procedureto check fluid level when thetransmission temperature isbetween 24°C and 34°C(75°F and 93°F).

1. Locate the transmission dipstickat the rear of the enginecompartment, on the passengerside of the vehicle.

Page 49: 2012 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid M - GMC · 2020-04-03 · Cadillac Escalade Hybrid - 2012 Black plate (2,1) ii Introduction The names, logos, emblems, slogans, vehicle model names,

See Engine CompartmentOverview on page 10‑4 for moreinformation.

2. Pull out the dipstick and wipe itwith a clean rag or paper towel.

3. Install the dipstick by pushingit back in all the way, waitthree seconds, and then pull itback out again.

4. Check both sides of the dipstickand read the lower level. Repeatthe check procedure to verify thereading.

5. If the fluid level is below theCOLD check band, add onlyenough fluid as necessary tobring the level into the COLDband. It does not take muchfluid, generally less than 0.5 Liter(1 Pint). Do not overfill.

6. Perform a hot check atthe first opportunity afterthe transmission reaches anormal operating temperaturebetween 60°C and 75°C(140°F and 167°F).

7. If the fluid level is in theacceptable range, push thedipstick back in all the way.

Hot Check Procedure

Use this procedure to check thetransmission fluid level when thetransmission fluid temperatureis between 60°C and 75°C(140°F and 167°F).

The hot check is the most accuratemethod to check the fluid level. Thehot check should be performed atthe first opportunity in order to verifythe cold check. The fluid level risesas fluid temperature increases,so it is important to ensure thetransmission temperature is withinrange.

1. Locate the transmission dipstickat the rear of the enginecompartment, on the passengerside of the vehicle.

5. Safe operating level is within theHOT cross hatch band on thedipstick. If the fluid level is notwithin the HOT band, and thetransmission temperature isbetween 60°C and 75°C(140°F and 167°F), add ordrain fluid as necessary to bringthe level into the HOT band.If the fluid level is low, add onlyenough fluid to bring the levelinto the HOT band. It does nottake much fluid, generally lessthan 0.5 Liter (1 Pint). Do notoverfill.

6. If the fluid level is in theacceptable range, push thedipstick back in all the way.

Consistency of Readings

Always check the fluid level at leasttwice using the procedure describedpreviously. Consistency (repeatablereadings) is important to maintainingproper fluid level. If readings are stillinconsistent, contact your dealer.

Wheels and Tires

Tire PressureTires need the correct amount of airpressure to operate effectively.

Notice: Neither tireunderinflation noroverinflation is good.Underinflated tires, or tiresthat do not have enough air,can result in:. Tire overloading andoverheating which couldlead to a blowout.

. Premature orirregular wear.

. Poor handling.

. Reduced fuel economy.

Overinflated tires, or tiresthat have too much air, canresult in:. Unusual wear.. Poor handling.. Rough ride.. Needless damage fromroad hazards.

The Tire and Loading Informationlabel on the vehicle indicates theoriginal equipment tires and thecorrect cold tire inflation pressures. The recommended pressure is theminimum air pressure needed tosupport the vehicle's maximum loadcarrying capacity.

For additional information regardinghow much weight the vehicle cancarry, and an example of the Tireand Loading Information label, see“Vehicle Load Limits” in the ownermanual. How the vehicle is loadedaffects vehicle handling and ride

comfort. Never load the vehicle withmore weight than it was designed tocarry.

When to Check

Check your tires once a monthor more.

How to Check

Use a good quality pocket-typegauge to check tire pressure.Proper tire inflation cannot bedetermined by looking at the tire.Check the tire inflation pressurewhen the tires are cold, meaningthe vehicle has not been drivenfor at least three hours or no morethan 1.6 km (1 mi).

Remove the valve cap from thetire valve stem. Press the tiregauge firmly onto the valve to get apressure measurement. If the coldtire inflation pressure matches therecommended pressure on the Tireand Loading Information label, nofurther adjustment is necessary.

If the inflation pressure is low, addair until the recommended pressureis reached. If the inflation pressureis high, press on the metal stem inthe center of the tire valve torelease air.

Re-check the tire pressure with thetire gauge.

Return the valve caps on the valvestems to prevent leaks and keep outdirt and moisture.

Tire Pressure MonitorOperationThis vehicle may have a TirePressure Monitor System (TPMS).The TPMS is designed to warn thedriver when a low tire pressurecondition exists. TPMS sensors aremounted onto each tire and wheelassembly. The TPMS sensorsmonitor the air pressure in the tiresand transmit the tire pressurereadings to a receiver located in thevehicle.

When a low tire pressure conditionis detected, the TPMS will illuminatethe low tire pressure warningsymbol located on the instrumentcluster. If the warning light comeson, stop as soon as possible andinflate the tires to the recommendedpressure shown on the tire loadinginformation label. See “Vehicle LoadLimits” in the owner manual formore information.

A message to check the pressure ina specific tire displays in the DriverInformation Center (DIC). The lowtire pressure warning light and theDIC warning message come on ateach ignition cycle until the tiresare inflated to the correct inflation

pressure. Using the DIC, tirepressure levels can be viewed. Foradditional information and detailsabout the DIC operation anddisplays see Driver InformationCenter (DIC) on page 5‑5.

The low tire pressure warning lightmay come on in cool weather whenthe vehicle is first started, and thenturn off as the vehicle is driven. Thiscould be an early indicator that theair pressure is getting low andneeds to be inflated to the properpressure.

A Tire and Loading Informationlabel shows the size of the originalequipment tires and the correctinflation pressure for the tires whenthey are cold. See “Vehicle LoadLimits” for an example of the Tireand Loading Information label andits location. Also see Tire Pressureon page 10‑16.

10-18 Vehicle Care

The TPMS can warn about alow tire pressure condition butit does not replace normal tiremaintenance. See “Tire Inspection,”“Tire Rotation” and “Tires” in theowner manual for more information.

Notice: Tire sealant materials arenot all the same. A non-approvedtire sealant could damage theTPMS sensors. TPMS sensordamage caused by using anincorrect tire sealant is notcovered by the vehiclewarranty. Always use onlythe GM-approved tire sealantavailable through your dealer orincluded in the vehicle.

Factory-installed Tire Inflator Kitsuse a GM approved liquid tiresealant. Using non-approved tiresealants could damage the TPMSsensors. See Tire Sealant andCompressor Kit on page 10‑22 forinformation regarding the inflator kitmaterials and instructions.

TPMS Malfunction Light andMessage

The TPMS will not function properlyif one or more of the TPMS sensorsare missing or inoperable. When thesystem detects a malfunction, thelow tire warning light flashes forabout one minute and then stays onfor the remainder of the ignitioncycle. A DIC warning message alsodisplays. The malfunction light andDIC warning message come on ateach ignition cycle until the problemis corrected. Some of the conditionsthat can cause these to comeon are:. The TPMS sensor matching

process was not done ornot completed successfullyafter rotating the tires. Themalfunction light and the DICmessage should go off aftersuccessfully completing thesensor matching process. See"TPMS Sensor MatchingProcess" later in this section.

. One or more TPMS sensorsare missing or damaged. Themalfunction light and the DICmessage should go off when theTPMS sensors are installed andthe sensor matching process isperformed successfully. Seeyour dealer for service.

. Replacement tires or wheels donot match the original equipmenttires or wheels. Tires and wheelsother than those recommendedcould prevent the TPMS fromfunctioning properly. See“Buying New Tires” in the ownermanual.

. Operating electronic devices orbeing near facilities using radiowave frequencies similar to theTPMS could cause the TPMSsensors to malfunction.

If the TPMS is not functioningproperly, it cannot detect or signal alow tire condition. See your dealerfor service if the TPMS malfunctionlight and DIC message comes onand stays on.

TPMS Sensor MatchingProcess

Each TPMS sensor has a uniqueidentification code. The identificationcode needs to be matched to a newtire/wheel position after rotating thevehicle’s tires or replacing one ormore of the TPMS sensors. Also, the TPMS sensor matching processshould be performed after replacinga spare tire with a road tirecontaining the TPMS sensor. Themalfunction light and the DICmessage should go off at the nextignition cycle. The sensors arematched to the tire/wheel positions, using a TPMS relearn tool, in thefollowing order: driver side front tire, passenger side front tire, passengerside rear tire, and driver side rear.See your dealer for service or topurchase a relearn tool.

There are two minutes to matchthe first tire/wheel position, andfive minutes overall to match allfour tire/wheel positions. If it takeslonger, the matching process stopsand must be restarted.

The TPMS sensor matchingprocess is:

1. Set the parking brake.

2. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN withthe engine off.

3. Press Q and K on theRemote Keyless Entry (RKE)transmitter at the same time forapproximately five seconds. Thehorn sounds twice to signal thereceiver is in relearn mode andTIRE LEARNING ACTIVEmessage displays on the DICscreen.

4. Start with the driver sidefront tire.

5. Place the relearn tool againstthe tire sidewall, near the valvestem. Then press the button toactivate the TPMS sensor.A horn chirp confirms that thesensor identification code hasbeen matched to this tire andwheel position.

6. Proceed to the passengerside front tire, and repeat theprocedure in Step 5.

7. Proceed to the passenger siderear tire, and repeat theprocedure in Step 5.

8. Proceed to the driver side reartire, and repeat the procedurein Step 5. The horn soundstwo times to indicate the sensoridentification code has beenmatched to the driver side reartire, and the TPMS sensormatching process is no longeractive. The TIRE LEARNINGACTIVE message on the DICdisplay screen goes off.

9. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.

10. Set all four tires to therecommended air pressurelevel as indicated on the Tireand Loading Information label.

10-20 Vehicle Care

Tire RotationTires should be rotated every12 000 km (7,500 mi).

Any time unusual wear isnoticed, rotate the tires assoon as possible and check thewheel alignment. Also check fordamaged tires or wheels. See“When It Is Time for New Tires”and “Wheel Replacement” inthe owner manual for moreinformation.

The purpose of regular rotationis to achieve more uniformwear for all tires on the vehicle. The first rotation is the mostimportant. See “MaintenanceSchedule” in the owner manual.

Use this rotation pattern whenrotating the tires.

Adjust the front and rear tiresto the recommended inflationpressure on the Tire andLoading Information label afterthe tires have been rotated. See“Vehicle Load Limits” in theowner manual for an example ofthe label and its location on yourvehicle.

Reset the Tire Pressure MonitorSystem (TPMS). See TirePressure Monitor Operation onpage 10‑17.

Check that all wheel nuts areproperly tightened. See “WheelNut Torque” under “Capacitiesand Specifications” in the ownermanual.

Lightly coat the center of thewheel hub with wheel bearinggrease after a wheel change ortire rotation to prevent corrosionor rust build-up. Do not getgrease on the flat wheelmounting surface or on thewheel nuts or bolts.

If a Tire Goes FlatThis vehicle has a tire inflator kit. There is no spare tire, no tirechanging equipment, and no placeto store a tire.

Vehicle Care 10-21

It is unusual for a tire to blowoutwhile driving, especially if the tiresare maintained properly. If air goesout of a tire, it is much more likely toleak out slowly. But if there ever is ablowout, here are a few tips aboutwhat to expect and what to do:

If a front tire fails, the flat tirecreates a drag that pulls the vehicletoward that side. Take your foot offthe accelerator pedal and grip thesteering wheel firmly. Steer tomaintain lane position, and thengently brake to a stop, well off theroad, if possible.

A rear blowout, particularly on acurve, acts much like a skid andmay require the same correction asused in a skid. Stop pressing theaccelerator pedal and steer tostraighten the vehicle. It may bevery bumpy and noisy. Gentlybrake to a stop, well off the road,if possible.

{ WARNING

Driving on a flat tire will causepermanent damage to the tire.Re-inflating a tire after it hasbeen driven on while severelyunderinflated or flat may causea blowout and a serious crash.Never attempt to re-inflate a tirethat has been driven on whileseverely underinflated or flat.Have your dealer or an authorizedtire service center repair orreplace the flat tire as soon aspossible.

If a tire goes flat, avoid further tireand wheel damage by driving slowlyto a level place and stopping, welloff the road, if possible. Thendo this:

1. Turn on the hazard warningflashers.

2. Park the vehicle. Set the parkingbrake firmly and put the shiftlever in P (Park).

3. Turn off the engine.

4. Inspect the flat tire.

If the tire has been separated fromthe wheel or has damaged sidewallsor large tears that allow rapid airloss, call a tire repair facility. See“Roadside Assistance Program” or“Roadside Service” in the ownermanual.

If the flat tire is due to a slow leakcaused by a nail or other similarroad hazard, the tire inflator kit maybe used to repair the damaged tiretemporarily. The kit uses a liquid tiresealant to seal small punctures inthe tread area of the tire.

After repairing a tire with the tireinflator kit, take the vehicle to anauthorized dealer to have the tireinspected and repaired as soonas possible. The tire sealant is atemporary repair only. See TireSealant and Compressor Kit onpage 10‑22.

Idling a vehicle in an enclosedarea with poor ventilation isdangerous. Engine exhaust mayenter the vehicle. Engine exhaustcontains Carbon Monoxide (CO)which cannot be seen or smelled. It can cause unconsciousnessand even death. Never run theengine in an enclosed area thathas no fresh air ventilation. Formore information, see ”EngineExhaust” in the owner manual.

{ WARNING

Overinflating a tire could causethe tire to rupture and you orothers could be injured. Besure to read and follow the tiresealant and compressor kitinstructions and inflate the tire toits recommended pressure. Donot exceed the recommendedpressure.

{ WARNING

Storing the tire sealant andcompressor kit or otherequipment in the passengercompartment of the vehicle couldcause injury. In a sudden stop orcollision, loose equipment couldstrike someone. Store the tiresealant and compressor kit in itsoriginal location.

If this vehicle has a tire sealant andcompressor kit, there may not be aspare tire, tire changing equipment, and on some vehicles there may notbe a place to store a tire.

The tire sealant and compressorcan be used to temporarily sealpunctures up to 6 mm (¼ inch) inthe tread area of the tire. It canalso be used to inflate an underinflated tire.

If the tire has been separated fromthe wheel, has damaged sidewalls,or has a large puncture, the tire istoo severely damaged for the tiresealant and compressor kit to beeffective. See “Roadside AssistanceProgram” or “Roadside Service” inthe owner manual.

10-30 Vehicle Care

If the vehicle's 12‐volt battery hasrun down, you may want to useanother vehicle and some jumpercables to start your vehicle. Use thefollowing steps to do it safely.

{ WARNING

Batteries can hurt you. They canbe dangerous because:

. They contain acid that canburn you.

. They contain gas that canexplode or ignite.

. They contain enoughelectricity to burn you.

If you do not follow these stepsexactly, some or all of thesethings can hurt you.

Notice: Ignoring these stepscould result in costly damage tothe vehicle that would not becovered by the warranty.

Trying to start the vehicle bypushing or pulling it will notwork, and it could damage thevehicle.

1. Check the other vehicle. It musthave a 12‐volt battery with anegative ground system.

Notice: Only use a vehicle thathas a 12-volt system with anegative ground for jumpstarting. If the other vehicle doesnot have a 12-volt system with anegative ground, both vehiclescan be damaged.

2. Get the vehicles close enoughso the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles are nottouching each other. It couldcause a ground connection youdo not want. You would not beable to start your vehicle, andthe bad grounding could damagethe electrical systems.

To avoid the possibility of thevehicles rolling, set the parkingbrake firmly on both vehiclesinvolved in the jump start

procedure. Put the automatictransmission in P (Park) ora manual transmission inN (Neutral) before setting theparking brake. If you have afour-wheel-drive vehicle, be surethe transfer case is in a drivegear, not in N (Neutral).

Notice: If any accessories are lefton or plugged in during the jumpstarting procedure, they could bedamaged. The repairs wouldnot be covered by the vehiclewarranty. Whenever possible, turn off or unplug all accessorieson either vehicle when jumpstarting the vehicle.

3. Turn off the ignition on bothvehicles. Unplug unnecessaryaccessories plugged into thecigarette lighter or the accessorypower outlets. Turn off the radioand all the lamps that are notneeded.

This avoids sparks and helpssave both batteries. It couldsave the radio!

4. Open the hood on the othervehicle and locate thepositive (+) and negative (−)terminal locations on thatvehicle.

Your vehicle has a remotepositive (+) and a remotenegative (−) jump startingterminal. You should always usethese remote terminals insteadof the terminals on the battery.

If the vehicle has a remotepositive (+), it is located under ared plastic cover at the positive

battery post. To uncover theremote positive (+) terminal, open the red plastic cover.

5. The remote negative (−) is asolid engine ground.

{ WARNING

An electric fan can start up evenwhen the engine is not runningand can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from anyunderhood electric fan.

{ WARNING

Using an open flame near abattery can cause battery gas toexplode. People have been hurtdoing this, and some have beenblinded. Use a flashlight if youneed more light.

(Continued)

WARNING (Continued)

Be sure the battery has enoughwater. You do not need to addwater to the battery installed inyour new vehicle. But if a batteryhas filler caps, be sure the rightamount of fluid is there. If it is low,add water to take care of thatfirst. If you do not, explosive gascould be present.

Battery fluid contains acid thatcan burn you. Do not get it onyou. If you accidentally get it inyour eyes or on your skin, flushthe place with water and getmedical help immediately.

10-32 Vehicle Care

{ WARNING

Fans or other moving engineparts can injure you badly. Keepyour hands away from movingparts once the engine is running.

6. Check that the jumper cablesdo not have loose or missinginsulation. If they do, you couldget a shock. The vehicles couldbe damaged too.

Before you connect the cables, here are some basic things youshould know. Positive (+) goesto positive (+) or to a remotepositive (+) terminal if the vehiclehas one. Negative (−) will go to aheavy, unpainted metal enginepart or a solid engine ground.

Do not connect positive (+) tonegative (−) or you will get ashort that would damage thebattery and maybe other partstoo. Do not connect thenegative (−) cable to the

negative (−) terminal on the deadbattery because this can causesparks.

7. Connect the red positive (+)cable to the positive (+) terminalof the vehicle with the deadbattery. Use a remotepositive (+) if the vehiclehas one.

8. Do not let the other end touchmetal. Connect it to thepositive (+) terminal of thegood battery. Use a remotepositive (+) if the vehiclehas one.

9. Now connect the blacknegative (−) cable to thenegative (−) terminal of thegood battery. Use a remotenegative (−) if the vehiclehas one.

Do not let the other end touchanything until the next step. Theother end of the negative (−)cable does not go to the deadbattery. It goes to a heavy, unpainted metal engine part or

to the remote negative (−)terminal on the vehicle with thedead battery.

10. Connect the other end of thenegative (−) cable to theremote negative (−) terminal,on the vehicle with the deadbattery.

11. Now start the vehicle with thegood battery and run theengine for a while.

12. Try to start the vehicle thathad the dead battery. If it willnot start after a few tries, itprobably needs service.

Notice: If the jumper cables areconnected or removed in thewrong order, electrical shortingmay occur and damage thevehicle. The repairs would not becovered by the vehicle warranty.Always connect and remove thejumper cables in the correctorder, making sure that thecables do not touch each other orother metal.
