what your children can be

learning this summer

Dear Families,

Since 1994 my wife and I have been creating exciting enrichment programs for

children in both the camp setting and as public school educators. Discover Camp was born out

of our love of teaching science, technology, math and utilizing hobbies in education. Discover

Camp originally started as a hands-on hobby camp but since has expanded to provide a wide

variety of enriching activities for boys and girls. Our philosophies are on the importance

of hands-on activities in education have never wavered. As a matter of fact we think it is

more important than ever to introduce children to interactive, stimulating, hands-on

experiences as our schools have been forced to focus on state tests and district rankings.

Holy Rosary School continues to embrace our program and welcomes us back to

their school. We utilize the entire facility, 17 classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria and all

the athletic fields. The school is centrally located in Hawthorne, NY, less than a minute

from the Sprain, Taconic and Bronx River Parkways and just 5 minutes north of White Plains.

The grounds are perfect for our programs and the air conditioned facilities

offers an escape from the summer heat.

Discover Camp was built upon our love of hobbies and we have built close relationships with the biggest names in the

industry. These relationships allow us to research new products throughout the year and to develop new classes. We are

the only camp in the United States that works directly with hobby manufacturers and distributors. Our hobby programs

have been an integral part of our success; and have helped establish us as leaders in this unique field and it is what sets us

apart from other camps. We’re always one step ahead

Back in 2007 Discover Camp was recognized by SMART Technologies as a "promising, innovative program" and

granted us SMART Boards for our classrooms. Besides the majority of our instructors being NYS certified teachers six of

them are recognized as SMART Exemplary Educators.

Discover Camp promises to provide a new experience for your child that will begin a lifelong love of discovery.

Truly yours,

Anthony & Sabrina Rich and Family

Assistant Director, Anthony Melendez

Founder & Director, Anthony Rich

Medical Director/EMT, Peter DeBiase

Assistant Director, David O'Neil

Camp Directors Anthony & Sabrina Rich and Assistant Director David O’Neil are active, well respected public school

teachers with more than 50 years combined teaching experience.

Our student to adult ratio is typically 5-1.

The majority of Discover Camp’s teachers are NYS certified teachers. Our other instructors have degrees and

experience in their chosen fields.

Discover Camp actively seeks the most talented teachers and instructors in the area and believes that offering the

highest salaries attracts the most talented individuals.

We encourage differentiation of curriculum to meet a wide range of student abilities.

We believe that all children excel when provided with enrichment activities and a supportive environment.

All counselors are former campers of Discover Camp, former students of the directors or are personally

recommended by an instructor. Discover Camp does not advertise for counselors in newspapers. This reinforces the

family atmosphere at camp.

Teachers design their own courses and love what they are teaching.

Children select their courses and return year after year. Last summer we experienced a 90% camper return ratio.

80% of all new campers are referred by existing Discover Camp families.

Discover Camp is a safe, fun environment where children can test new classes and have an enjoyable experience while

learning something new or discovering a new hobby.

We utilize SMART Boards in many of our classrooms which allow our lessons to come alive.

Three Computer Labs: One Dell Laptop lab with 20 computers, one Mac Lab with 16 Macs, one robotics lab with 20

Dell laptops and 12 iPads

We own all of our equipment and re-invest every year in new technologies.

Discover Camp owns the largest Mini-Z track in the world, yes, the world!

On-Site off road radio controlled truck and buggy track.

The largest Radio Controlled program in the country.

No expenses spared attitude towards investing in the best materials for camp.

All classrooms and cafeteria are air conditioned.

“Discover Camp is quite simply, the best camp in Westchester” -parent 2009

Q-My child wants to attend Discover Camp for less than one of the four or three week sessions. Can they?

A-Most kids attend for full sessions but we have a number of children every year that attend one week sessions. Of course

you don’t get the full experience but our instructors and counselors make your child’s time at Discover Camp enjoyable and

meaningful.

Q-My child wants to take a certain class but does not meet the age requirements.

A-Normally we suggest that the child waits until they are of age to take the classes but all children mature at different

rates. If you think your child is capable of the material then we’re usually willing to try it out. You know your child best.

Q-Can I pay by credit card?

A-We use an online registration system. Visit www.DiscoverCamp.com to register.

Q-My child struggles in school. Is Discover Camp the right camp for my child?

A-Since the majority of our instructors are NYS licensed teachers, we know how to differentiate the curriculum and adjust

instruction. In addition, our use of SMART Boards offers children the visual reinforcement some children need.

Q- My child excels in school. Is Discover Camp the right camp for my child?

A-Once again, since the majority of our instructors are NYS licensed teachers, we know how to differentiate the curriculum

and adjust instruction in all directions. Many bright children are easily bored in school. Discover Camp’s instructors know

how to enrich their curriculum to challenge the brightest students. Hobbies are also the perfect outlet for a child who is

always looking for something stimulating to do at home and helps to keep them away from the dreaded video games.

Happy Camper Guarantee

If after the first three days of camp your child is not 100% happy we’ll happily refund 100% of your camp tuition no

questions asked. Your child’s positive summer experience is much more important than the bottom line.

Discover Camp Early Registration and Loyalty Discounts:

Each year we offer special rate to families that return to Discover Camp and to the families that they refer who register

early. This year we’re offering a $740 discount on early enrollment for the full 7 weeks. Registration must be received by

March 15, 2012. Visit our website to enroll or click here. The discounts obviously help our loyal families financially but also

assist us in planning ahead and hiring staff. The best part about our discount plan is that we do not require full payment until

May 1st. This gives families 6-7 months to plan and spread their payments out. We only ask for a 20% deposit per child to

lock in your discount. Again, it's the commitment we need not the full payment. I don't know of another camp that gives an

early enrollment discount without requiring full payment up front.

How to register? This year Discover Camp is launching a brand new online registration system. This new registration

system will allow you to manage your child’s dates of attendance, courses and payments. The new system will show you

what classes are age appropriate and what classes are open. You will be able to modify the schedule as need be. If you have

special requests please contact the Discover Camp office. Please visit www.discovercamp.com to enroll. Enrollment starts

January 25, 2012.

Can a child come for less than 3 out of 4 weeks? Yes, you would simply select the weeks of attendance when

registering on the online system. Our counselors will help your child catch up on what they missed.

Sibling Discount:

Each year we offer a sibling discount, 10% off the second child's tuition, 20% off the third child's tuition, and 50% off the

fourth child's tuition. Discounts apply to tuition only, discount does not apply to material fees or other fees other than

tuition.

Discover Camp’s “Family & Friends” Referral Program:

Discover Camp was built on word of mouth and referrals. We thank families for referring new families with 2.5% off tuition.

In addition, we also give the same discount to the new family that’s being referred too! There is no limit on the number of

families you can refer. With the new registration system referrals will be based on a coupon code that you will receive in an

e-mail. Referrals will be applied directly to your balance or we’ll credit your account and send you a check at the end of the

summer.

Discover Camp Lunch:

The full day program includes a delicious lunch packed by one of our local delicatessens. Every Monday morning your child

will choose their lunch for the next four days. (Tuesday-Friday) Every Monday is PIZZA DAY. We order our pizza from

Broadway Pizzeria in North White Plains. Iced tea and ice water are served each day. Soda is not served by Discover Camp.

Our cafeteria is air conditioned.

Discover Camp “Recess”:

Another unique aspect of Discover Camp is the options that we give the children during “recess.” The children have the

options of participating in a traditional recess or a whole lot more. Options include: Chess matches with Silvio, Rubix Cube

and other puzzles with “Master of the Cube” counselor Tim, RC car and truck racing, skateboarding with Jay and Milo, indoor

basketball, “Piano Bar”, Arts and Crafts, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, Wiffleball, Magic the Gathering, Yugio Cards, Guitar

Hero, Wii games on our SMART Boards, Stomp Rocket competitions, MINI-Z racing and other fun activities. Of course not

everything is offered everyday but there will be a variety of games to choose from.

Our Open houses take place at 180

Bradhurst Avenue Hawthorne, NY in

either the gymnasium or the cafeteria.

This is a great opportunity to meet

the directors, instructors, counselors

and often many of our campers since open houses are our family reunions too.

The Discover Independence program is

for the experienced student who wants

to create an individualized study program

or who is not ready to be a CIT yet. With our help, students design their own program.

Students will work with instructors but must be able to demonstrate independence and

act as a role model for other students. This program is meant for children who have

attended Mr. Rich’s classes or Discover Camp for a number of years and have proven their ability. Students applying for this

program should write a letter to Mr. Rich explaining why they are a good candidate and what programs they are considering.

Parents understand that the materials fees for this program can be significantly more (depending on the models & kits

chosen). Consider a more challenging RC car or truck, upgrade your existing cars or trucks, try a tank or sailboat or my favorite idea, try building a TAMIYA vintage kit, the same that I built when I was a kid. Contact the Discover Camp office

to discuss the specifics.

The program is ideal for those students who have proven they are responsible enough to

take on a role as a leader. Students who are 15 or 16 years old are eligible for this

program. Students who are 14 can enroll in the CIT Jr. position (Must be registered as a

camper). All CIT’s must be able to take directions well and learn from their mistakes.

Students who prove their abilities as a CIT will be invited back to Discover Camp to be a counselor. CIT’s will be assigned to

a counselor/mentor/teacher. CIT fees are minimal and meant to offset the costs of liability insurance, lunch, etc. since

anyone under the age of 16 is considered a camper. E-mail us to discuss requirements and to request an application. NYS has

strict guidelines about CITs and supervision of children. We far exceed supervision requirements and treat our CITs and

counselors more as teacher assistants than as supervisors. A typical classroom has a 6-1 student to adult ratio.

Other Important Information Open House Celebration will be held on two days each session. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

2012 Open House

Celebration Morning Afternoon

Session I July 19, 2012 9am - 10:30am July 20, 2012 2pm – 3:30pm

Session II August 9, 2012 9am – 10:30am August 10, 2012 2pm – 3:30pm

Camp is Closed on July 4th in observance for Independence Day

Camp T-Shirts will be distributed during the first week of each session. Students are encouraged to wear their

shirts every day.

Each student should carry a backpack that includes an insulated water bottle, sunscreen and any other personal

items your child may need. Backpacks and personal belongings should be clearly marked with your child’s first and

last name. In an effort to be more “green” each camper will receive a Discover Camp water bottle at the opening of

camp to reduce the use of plastic cups. This should be cleaned each night.

The camp is not responsible for personal property of the campers. Campers should not bring expensive items to

camp.

The director reserves the right to cancel or modify any courses if enrollment is insufficient or if a change of

instructor is needed. This event is highly unlikely but does occasionally occur.

Helpful tips for using this brochure: Please read all of our course descriptions and decide which classes interest your child. We suggest classes by grade level.

This is the grade level your child will be ENTERING in September. If a class is restricted to a certain grade level then it is

written with a lower and upper level, ie: grades 3-5. Most classes have a minimum age but can be taught with wide age

ranges. For example, Chess is written grade 1+ since the focus is on skills not age. There are many experienced 6 year old

chess players that could easily beat an inexperienced adult. We do ask that you abide by the age suggestions but if you feel

your child has an exceptional talent please e-mail us so we can discuss it.

Once you have read the descriptions look at our Discover Camp Daily Schedule in the back of the brochure and

circle one course for each of the four daily periods, again please keep your child’s grade in mind. Now that your courses

have been selected please visit DiscoverCamp.com and fill out the online registration form. 20% deposit is required at

checkout. The Medical Form must be received BEFORE camp begins. If you have not provided a medical form, your child

cannot start camp on the first day.

By June 1st, we should know if any classes will be cancelled due to low enrollment. This is a very unlikely but it does

occur. All classes usually run but if yours is cancelled we will give you the option of changing classes. If nothing else appeals

to your child a full refund will be offered. Registration is on a first come first serve basis and the most popular classes do

fill up early. Early enrollment is encouraged.

Thank you for requesting our brochure. We hope you’re impressed with what you find.

PLEASE RECYCLE and pass this brochure along to a friend after you’ve registered.

We’ll just send them new forms.

000-*New Game Time for the Developing Reader and Writer!

Have you ever noticed how quickly kids learn through games? It’s not a mystery that a

relaxed child will absorb far more information than one who is feeling pressured to

achieve. Teachers and parents worry about the “summer slide”, when children are out of

school and not regularly practicing the literacy strategies and skills they were taught

throughout the school year. Through Game Time, campers will maintain and continue to

build reading, writing and spelling skills through various games and activities. Time for

using technology and playing outdoor literacy games will be included as well!

017-Siege Machines- Make Catapults, & Trebuchets

Siege machines have been used since the days of Alexander the Great. Long before

modern weaponry there were siege machines such as catapults, battering rams, and

trebuchets. Siege machines were designed to break or go over city walls. Such machines

were used by the Romans, Chinese, and during the Middle Ages. These machines used

mechanical energy to fling large

projectiles to batter down stone walls

and hurl objects over those walls.

Students will put a modern spin on these

machines by creating their own. They

will then test them out. They will also

MIT student Erik Demaine recently won the

MacArthur "genius" award for his work with origami.

Origami is the basis of automobile airbag design, the collapse and expansion of outer-space

satellites and even a special kind of 'origami stent' that save lives every day.

In addition to origami - and to help you learn it - we learn astounding mind tricks, called

mnemonics. In just a day or two you'll:

Know the names of all the Presidents of the US

forwards and backwards!

Be able to name any state in the country just by

target. It’s not easy at first, but with practice it

doesn’t take long to improve and hit the target

perfectly.

Once again we’ve combined our instructor with

something that he has a passion for. Mr. D has been

bow hunting practicing with targets since he was very

young. First it was getting the kids excited about golf,

077-*New Karate Kid

Our program will give your child the foundation, philosophy and discipline of the ancient art

of Karate, while having fun at the same time.

Karate is a great way to get your kids into shape, and develop confidence in every walk in

life. Karate starts children off with learning the basics of self defense. High endurance

training routines is a great way to stay in shape. After learning the basics of karate and

mastering their knowledge of this art form, children start to develop confidence not only

because they are learning fighting techniques, but because they are succeeding in an art

that looks impossible to so many.

Another great reason to take karate lessons is for developing good posture. Most martial

arts not only deal with learning how to fight and self defense, but a big focus is also Kata.

This is a pattern of moves that the Martial Artist

have to memorize and perform to perfection most

times, in order to move up in levels or belts.

Come explore the ancient art of Karate!

Build a Board

Conceived by JAY ISOLINI the Build a Board Art program is designed to make the

learning experience as entertaining as the skateboard is to ride. Participants will learn the

science of how a skateboard is made and what it takes to make a professional skateboard

deck. Participants will form their shape and illustrate

their deck with thier own creative view point through

creative techniques. They will add their own touch to

their very own professional skateboard deck which can

be enjoyed outside the program. Students will then

participate in skate lessons.

Build a board is divided up into 2 different types of

boards:

083. Standard Board

Students will build a professional skateboard. They will learn the history behind skating,

how to build their own standard board, and receive skate lessons. Materials fees: $115

084. New Cruiser/LongBoard

Cruisers and longboards aren't made for tricks and have bigger softer wheels for a much

smoother ride. A longboard is a surfing variant of a skateboard, similar and related to a

surfboard or snowboard with wheels. It is used for cruising, downhill racing, slalom racing,

sliding, and/or transport. However, most stunts, and the boards themselves are very

different from that of a typical skateboard. They usually are designed for the descent of

a hill, slides, carves, manual or "dancing" with the board. Materials fees: $150

The Racing Academy

Discover Camp's most popular class, The Racing Academy, has been constantly evolving for

many years and Discover Camp was practically built on this one class alone. In this class

campers learn how to build 1/10th radio controlled cars and trucks from kits that consist

of over 300 parts. First and foremost a child must develop the patience needed to take on

such a large project. Patience cannot be found or practiced it requires nurturing and we

are experts at fostering patience building skills. In the process they will be learning about

basic tools needed for construction and the proper use of these tools. We teach the

children about the various components and mechanics of these kits by teaching the

children to read the detailed schematics used to assemble the cars. This class introduces

your child into a life-long hobby that many of us have been enjoying for a long time. We’ve

all been building and racing since we were kids and we have no intention of stopping

anytime soon! These classes encourage the children to work under the careful guidance of

founder Anthony Rich & Vincent Brasesco and their carefully chosen assistants. We have

spent many years developing this class and over the last ten year we have assisted in the

assembly of over 1,000 radio controlled vehicles through my programs. Mr. Rich has been

building and racing for 25 years and Vincent for 10.

The Racing Academy is divided up into six distinct groups which must be carefully

selected.

090. Traxxas Slash Spec.

Focused around the infamous Traxxas Slash, the campers will be disassembling a truck

according to instructions that we have developed ourselves. This class is great for those

who want to take that first step into the hobby, the Slash is very straight-forward and is

nearly indestructible (we jumped it off a two story roof and it was fine!) After completion,

the campers will be able to use our off road track to participate in organized racing events

with many of the other Slash trucks at camp. We've built about 200 Slashes since we

introduced it to our camp two years ago so we're certainly experts on this particular

chassis. Materials fees: $295

091. Slash Spec./Upgrades (for returning campers)

This class is designed for campers who have already built a Traxxas Slash and wish to

spend their time carefully upgrading their cars. This will be done very carefully by first

thoroughly cleaning and examining the chassis for wear and tear. We will examine which

upgrades will benefit your chassis the best and really focus on more of the dynamics of

radio controlled cars and racing. The campers will also be arranged into different racing

classes determined by the upgrade package they choose. The goal to create two distinct

classes, stock and modified. The $75 fee gives the campers a "credit" to upgrade their

trucks after learning what each upgrade adds to their vehicle. Materials fees: $75

092. TT-01 On-Road Spec.

Starting with the basic TT-01 Type-E, campers will build from a kit an easy to drive 4WD

chassis. Vincent spent the fall experimenting with upgrade packages and has developed a

plan based around the concept of "best bang for the buck." After the initial build campers

will turn their TT01 Type-E chassis into the Type-VB, or the Vincent Brasesco Special.

This special spec. class will be adding an aluminum driveshaft, oil filled dampers, and full

ball bearing set to each kit. These parts will allow the campers to see the before and after

results of their upgrade. Oil filled shocks dampen the suspension and prevent bounce. Ball

bearings offer greater durability and reduce suspension slop and the aluminum driveshaft

cuts down on driveline vibrations and also gives the kids the ability to upgrade to faster

motors at a later time. You will be contacted in the Spring with a choice of bodies that are

available at that time. Materials fees: $295

093. Mini Cooper Spec.

Quite possibly the most exciting Racing Academy class yet (Can you tell it’s my favorite?)

We will be building the extremely fun-to-drive Tamiya M-05 chassis. That's M for Mini!

The campers will be building Mini Cooper bodied cars which have the unique distinction of

being Front Wheel Drive vehicles as apposed to the typical 4WD or RWD models in the

other classes. After building them, we will be adding some great "hop-up" parts. These will

include full ball bearings, a stabilizer set, and ball differentials. Again, just like the class

above we're trying to find the best upgrades that provide the greatest improvement for

the dollar. I can already see images of the Italian Job. Materials fees: $275

094. New Formula 1

There are few forms of motor racing that rival Formula One in speed and sport; F1 is a

unique, exhilarating combination of man, machine, asphalt, and sheer luck. Formula One’s

secret is its distinctive race car: an open-wheeled, lightweight, low-to-the ground affair

that resembles a small aircraft more than it does an automobile. This unique form-factor

and high level of performance carries over into the realm of radio-controlled scale models.

Discover Camp is proud to offer for the first time a scale Formula One spec racing course.

This course combines the construction of a Formula One RC kit equipped with a slew of

racing upgrades, and an intensive focus on developing driver skill in a fun, constructive

atmosphere punctuated by lessons from F1’s great drives and examination of current

developments in the full-size sport. Material fees: $350

095. New Advanced Racing Academy

This class is for the experienced builder who wants to build a more difficult kit. It is

strongly recommended that campers build at least two kits in the Racing Academy before

entering Racing Academy Advanced. Campers will have the choice of building one of four

different kits. The first choice is the HPI Blitz ESE. This is a 2-wheel drive short course

truck with high performance trimmings like a ball differential and upgraded tires. This

truck is perfect for our off-road track and is a step up from the Traxxas Slash. The

second choice is the Tamiya TA-06. This car is a four-wheel drive belt driven on road car.

It also has a unique inboard suspension system. The third choice is the Tamiya F104, an F1

style car that had bodies based off of real F1 cars. This car is recommended for campers

who want a car that is rewarding but demanding to drive. The final choice is the Axial

SCX10. This is a rock crawler. It’s designed to go relatively slow so that it can climb over

huge rocks, drive through deep dirt and even through water and snow. The Axial SCX10 is

that it can be used anywhere even in very small areas, all you need is something to climb

over. Once campers build their Rock Crawler they can use it on our rock crawling course.

The cost of each of these cars varies depending on what electronics the camper wants. If

you have any questions about any of the different cars feel free to contact us.

Material fees: Depends on kit and options selected. Contact us for help in selection

096. Discover Camp Racing & Repairs (For Returning Campers)

Any camper who has previously taken The Racing Academy and is interested in getting

their vehicles back in order and racing their vehicles should join this class. We'll be

assigning two counselors specifically to this program so that there is ALWAYS someone

available to race with the kids or assist with repairs. No additional fees are charged

except for parts needed for repairs.

Other kits for advanced builders are always available. Please contact to discuss

individual needs

Parent Testimonials “It’s hard to believe that Discover Camp is such a “young camp.” My children have been to many camps that have

operated for much longer than Discover and Discover Camp is by far the most organized Camp we’ve even been

to. In addition I have never experienced a camp with better communication. We love the daily e-mail updates!

Keep up the hard work and continue to keep us informed of what happens at camp.”- Laura

“We are so blown away by the Discover Camp experience. I have to tell you that our son has been to several

other camps and he hated all of them. I had very low expectations when I signed him up for your camp because

we have never had a successful experience in the summer. We just assumed that camp wasn't his thing. Imagine

my surprise when three weeks into camp he actually still gets excited to go. Never an argument. He loves the

staff and he even commented on how nice the kids are. We are so grateful for the program and he is already

planning what he is taking next summer. Really, I can't thank you enough!!”- Laurie

“We wanted to thank you for providing an exciting and educational environment for the kids this summer. Our

daughter, had a wonderful experience and enjoyed her time at Discover Camp very much. She has already told us

that the only camp she will be going to next summer is Discover Camp.

We wish you good luck and hope that Discover Camp be even more successful in the future.

Thank you.” -Shahram & Mandis

“My kids were just as excited to get the Discover Camp catalog as they were to get the Toys R Us Christmas

catalog; they quickly opened it up and started to mark all the classes they wanted to take. It was great to see

them talk about the classes and what they might be doing in them, they got even more excited for the summer!

Thanks for that!!!” - Denise

“I just wanted to report in that my two children are new campers this year and they cannot express more

enthusiastically (from DAY ONE) how very much they are enjoying every aspect of camp! They are sooooo

immensely happy and look greatly forward to each day! They have so much excitement (and stories to tell of

learning and fun) when they get off the bus each day. It is truly wonderful.” – Lori

“Just a note to say my children loved their first day. Who would have thought a nearly 12 year old boy who

eats/sleeps/breaths video games and baseball would love origami ” – Allison, mom 2011

“Firstly a gigantic thank you to you and your team. We truly have the epitome of a " happy camper". He is loving

Discover Camp and couldn't be happier with his teachers and counselors. I also have to add that I thoroughly

enjoy the updates, they create a sense of connectedness to the daily activities, and add to the reassurance that

he is not just at camp, he's having a great experience at a great camp, with people who love what they do.” - Liz &

Peter

“Nicholas is loving Discover Camp and we are already talking about next year! Our 8 yr old is interested as well.

Kudos to you and your wonderful staff! This is our first year in Discover Camp, what a great experience!”-Jola

“I think you are doing a great job updating, encouraging, and including the parents in the day to day of camp life,

plus giving a personal invitation into your own family's life. They sound lovely! I think you are very dedicated and

it is abundantly clear you have a blast with the camp. Thank you!” –Anonymous
