Keynote AddressKeynote Speaker Dwight Takamine was born and raised in the plantation community of Honoka‘a. He attended Honoka‘a Elementary and Honoka‘a High School where he graduated as class valedic-torian in 1971. Dwight earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa and his law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law in 1978.

Specializing in labor law, Dwight worked for the firm Bouslong and Symonds in 1978 and estab-lished a private practice in 1983. His political career began the following year when he was elected to the State House of Representatives in Hawai‘i Island’s first district where he served until 2008 when he was elected to the State Senate.

His legislative assignments included Chair of the House Finance Committee along with the commit-tees on Labor and Public Employment, Water and Land and the Senate Labor Committee. Dwight left the Senate in 2010 when he was appointed to his current position by newly-elected Governor Neil Abercrombie.

As State Labor Director, Takamine has worked with Agriculture Chair Russell Kokubun to launch a “Veteran to Farmer” initiative on Hawai‘i Island, which provides job training to veterans while in-creasing economic activity in rural communities. The effort is part of Governor Abercrombie’s New Day Plan to implement more meaningful sustainability throughout Hawai‘i.

A Message From The Chancellor

On behalf of our campus ‘ohana, I extend my congratulations to the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Fall 2012 graduates! During your time with us, you have enlivened and enriched our community of scholars, and I want to thank you for entrusting your professional educa-tion to UH Hilo.

Commencement is a time to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in each of your lives. We gather to recognize the culmination of all your experiences, challenges and achieve-ments, confirmed by the bestowment of your degree. It is a day you will always remember as you receive the recognition and honor you deserve from your ‘ohana, university and community.

Your achievements are inspiring. Your class has shown through scholastic excellence that you are the best and the brightest, the most engaged, the most qualified to serve as the leaders of communities, states and countries throughout the world. We stand in awe of your talent, intelligence and enthusiasm. I hope that your time here has provided you with a deep reservoir of the Aloha Spirit and that you leave this campus inspired to make great contributions to your communities and to the world.

It brings me great pleasure to congratulate our Fall 2012 graduates!

With warmest aloha,

Don StraneyChancellor, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo

Page 7: 2012 Fall Program, UHH Commencement

To our Fall Graduates of 2012,

I would like to start off by saying congratulations to each and every one of you! You have reached a very important milestone in your lives and you should be extremely proud of yourselves. Never take this accomplishment lightly because you have endured what many could not. You all share a bond that only college graduates can understand. You have braved the countless hours of reading, lectures and labs. You have survived the all night cram sessions for mid-terms and finals that left you completely blurry eyed the next day and feeling worse than any hangover. You made it through the constant flood of reports and term papers that seemed never ending. Even though it may have seemed that you were the only one in the world suffering, just take a look around you now and you will see those who shared your pain. You were never alone!

Your family members and friends honor you tonight for what you have accomplished and so do the faculty, staff and fellow students of UH Hilo. You definitely deserve it! I now share with you a few things that I have learned from my experience. Never forget to appreciate those who helped and supported you along the way because they are you true fans. Take all the knowledge and wisdom you have gained from this experience and do great things for yourself, your family and your community. Remember to pass on what you know to others while always taking the opportunity to learn new things. Last but not least, when you are faced with those difficult situations that life throws at you, remember what you have been through and use that same determination to push forward. The only real limits to what you can accomplish are the ones you put on yourself!

Again, congratulations to all of you! Now go forward and reap the rewards of all your hard work and perseverance. JOB WELL DONE!!!!

Sincerely,

Michael A. SadoUHHSA President

Dear Winter 2012 Graduates,

As President of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association, I want to offer my warmest congratulations to our Winter 2012 graduates. This is a major milestone in your life, and we are pleased to be able to share in this wonderful occasion with you. On behalf of the Alumni Association, I also want to welcome you to membership in the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association.

As a graduate of the Class of 2000, I want to emphasize that it is never too early to get involved. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities this involvement has afforded me to meet and work with fellow alumni and the faculty at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. We are proud of the success of our University and it is because of students like you, as well as the outstanding faculty, that the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo will continue to prosper and be a #1 choice in higher-education for those within the Pacific region and beyond.

As you leave UH Hilo and pursue other endeavors, whether graduate school, immediate employment or other post-graduate experiences, we hope that you will stay connected to this University through membership in the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Alumni and Friends Association. Your success is our success, and we want to hear about your future accomplishments. I invite all of you to participate and get involved in the Alumni Association, as your input on the Board or on one if its committees would be indispensable in helping us to accomplish our goals. The impact that recent graduates can have on prospective and current students is enormous! It is because of the generous support of alumni and friends of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo that we are where we are today. Let it be by our generous support that current and future students have the same opportunities.

We are very proud of your achievement and wish you good health, happiness and continued success in whatever path you choose for your future.

Congratulations!

Best wishes & Aloha,

In honor of the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Fall Commencement Ceremony

December 15, 2012

Aloha,

Congratulations to the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s Fall Class of 2012! I join your family, friends, and teachers in recognizing the outstanding commitment you have made to reach this goal.

The diplomas you receive today will act as stepping stones to even greater achievement. In my own life, as an alumnus of the University of Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i’s public schools, my education took me from my beginnings as a first generation immigrant in a single parent household to my role today as your representative in the United States Congress. Your education will open doors to many new and exciting opportunities. I challenge you to use those opportunities to find a way to give back to your community, and include in your life a way to serve and inspire others.

As you embark on this next chapter in your lives, you can look back on your academic career at UH Hilo with pride. My warmest mahalo and appreciation to the UH Hilo faculty who have helped these graduates to excel in both in and out of the classroom.

My best wishes to all of you for your continued success.

Sincerely,

Mazie K. HironoMember of Congress 2nd District, Hawai‘i

The Star-Spangled BannerPoem by Francis Scott Key

Music by John Stafford Smith

Oh, say, can you see by the dawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh,say,doesthatStar‐SpangledBanneryetwave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
