It was 2009 when the Osage footballteam went undefeated in the regularseason en route to an 11-1 record and atrip to the state quarterfinals.

Despite two more playoff appear-ances the last two seasons and a .500winning percentage (4-6 in 2010 and6-4 last season), the Green Devils arelooking to make another deep postsea-son run this season in Class 2A,District 3.

"It takes everyone working hard inpractice every single day," senior line-backer Tyler Havel said. "You just haveto stay focused and keep workingtoward your goal. Everyone out here

has the same goal and we just have towork hard to fulfill that goal."

Fellow senior Jesse Klaes, a lineman, knows that nothing is going to comeeasy as a new season brings new dis-trict foes, including defending Class 3Astate champion Union (LaPorte City).

"Everyone has to work their butts offand try their hardest," Klaes said. "As asenior, we know this is our last year, our last chance."

And coach Lon Lawler, who is count-ing on his seniors to lead the way, hasliked what he's seen thus far.

"I'm really proud of our seniors rightnow heading into their final season,"Lawler said. "Over the years, they'vemade a lot of progress and have reallyworked hard to improve athletically.

We're looking to have our seniors reallyform the foundation of our footballteam. I'm hoping for a great year fromthose guys."

The defense is led by Havel, whorecorded 73 tackles last season to leadthe team.

"Our defense is filled with a lot ofreturning starters from last season,"Havel said.

Also back are seniors Dan Churchand Colin Barker and junior CaseyRinghofer.

Lawler said his defense will need tohold up physically throughout the sea-son and force turnovers.

"In years past, we've been successfulwhen we force turnovers," Lawler said."We've been able to get to the football, knock it loose, or get some intercep-tions. That's something we've beenworking on this preseason, creatingturnovers."

Church, an all-district selection, willanchor the offensive line along withKlaes while Trevor Haaland returns at

quarterback after throwing for 911yards and eight touchdowns as a soph-omore.

However, the Green Devils mustreplace their top two running backs inLuke Hanke and Austin Wagner, whocombined for 1,732 rushing yards and23 touchdowns.

"It's tough to lose seniors off of anyteam, especially the ones we had lastyear, but we know we need to stepthings up," Klaes said. "I feel prettygood with what I've seen. We have a lotof younger guys that are stepping up."

That list includes Barker, Ringhoferand Ryan Woods, another junior, whileHavel will be one of Haaland's targetsin the passing game.

Lawler said his team will look forways to get everyone involved.

"Offensively, we're looking to spreadthe ball around, getting the ball in dif-ferent players' hands in differentways," the coach said. "I think we havethe kids to do that."
