VOL. 48 NO. 2 SERVING 2000 ENGINEERS & LAND SURVEYORS APRIL, 2012 2012 HAWAII MATHCOUNTS® COMPETITION RESULTS Washington Middle School math team took first place in the 2012 MATHCOUNTS® 29th Hawaii State Competition on March 3, 2012 held at Iolani School. A week earlier Washington also placed first at the MATH- COUNTS® Oahu Chapter Competition when they competed against 24 Oahu schools. This makes it two in a row for Washington, which placed first in 2011 State Competition, and second in 2010. As a result of its first place fin- ish, Washington Coach Sung Park will be the Hawaii team’s coach at the National Competition on May 11, 2012 at Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. Accompanying Park are team members David Chang and Jion Kato of Washington Middle, Mark Klein of Punahou, and Jesse Doan of Seabury Hall. These Mathletes earn the rights to represent Hawaii as a result of their first to fourth place finish in the Countdown Round of the competition. This Round pits the eight highest scorers in the written Sprint and Target Rounds in a head to head competition. Jion Kato took first in the written portion with David Chang second, Jesse Doan third, and Mark Klein fourth. Washington beat Waiakea Intermediate (sec- ond), Punahou (third), Iolani (fourth), Kaimuki Middle (fifth), Seabury Hall (sixth), Niu Valley (seventh), and Highlands Intermediate (eighth). The week before at the Oahu Chapter Competition Washington beat Punahou (sec- ond), Iolani (third), Kaimuki (fourth), Highlands (fifth), and Niu Valley (sixth). Award presenters taking time for this very worthy event included Dr. Carey Inouye, Dean of Instruction, Iolani School; Dewey Gottlieb, Department of Education; Lynne Unemori, Vice-President of Corporate Relations for Hawaiian Electric; Brian Bowers of Bowers and Kubota; and Kurt Kunimune, President, Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers (HSPE). MATHCOUNTS® is a national math enrich- ment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achieve- ment in every U.S. state and territory, and is one of the most successful education partner- ship involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students in America. The com- petition is opened to 6th, 7th and 8th graders, and the participants are known as Mathletes. The competitions begin with the Sprint Round, followed by the Target, Team, and Countdown Rounds. The Sprint Round has individual Mathletes answering 30 difficult problems in 40 minutes. The Target Round has 8 problems in pairs of two with 6 minutes per pair to complete. The Team Round has 10 problems where teams of four Mathletes have 20 minutes to come up with the answers, and finally, the Countdown Round in a round robin arrangement is conducted with the 8 - 12 high- est individual scorers from the Sprint and Target Rounds. Countdown Round spectators are usually amazed by the brilliance of these Mathletes. The competitions require many dedicated volunteers including proctors and scorers. MATHCOUNTS® is also an Engineering event. It is held around Engineers Week. HSPE sponsors it. Engineering organizations such as ASME have members on the Hawaii MATH- COUNTS® Steering Committee and provides proctors and scorers for the competition with the help of ASCE YMF, SAME, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Hawaiian Electric Co., Inc. (HECO) volunteers. Engineering firms such as SSFM International also help with the competition proctoring and scoring. HSPE organizes Hawaii MATHCOUNTS® with assistance from a steering committee comprised of engineers and educators. HSPE Co-Chairmen for Hawaii MATHCOUNTS® are Kurt Kunimune of Bowers and Kubota and Barry Nakamoto of HECO, and assisted by Nathan Yuen of HECO. Hawaiian Electric Company has been a proud supporter of the competitions since 1984.

On February 23, 2012 Curtis Beck, P.E.,long-time member of the Big Island chapter ofHSPE, put on an ethics webinar for theAmerican Industrial Hygiene Association(AIHA) and the American Society of SafetyEngineers (ASSE). Curt, who has served onNSPE’s Board of Ethical Review since 2008,was one of four speakers who presented at ajoint seminar by AIHA and ASSE on“Professional Ethics and Responsibility” at theHale Ikena Club House, Ft. Shafter. The otherswere Jennifer Shishido, Bob McEldowney, andCraig Shoji.

In his webinar, broadcast remotely from Hilo,Curt provided an overview of professionalethics as it relates to the practice of profession-al engineering. A key framework of profession-al engineering ethics is the NSPE Code ofEthics for Engineers, which holds as one of itsfundamental canons the following: “Engineers,in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall conduct themselves honorably, responsi-bly, ethically, and lawfully so as to enhance thehonor, reputation, and usefulness of the profes-sion.”

The use of the Code of Ethics was illustratedthrough a discussion of hypothetical ethical sit-uations involving engineers in the practice oftheir profession. These cases represent a sam-ple of those deliberated annually by the Boardof Ethical Review, which renders their analysisand judgment of the cases based on the tenetsof the Code.

In one, an engineer who accepted anadvance payment for services that were neverperformed, was found to be unethical for refus-ing to return the payment because in the verbalagreement the engineer had with his client, theengineer failed to signal his intent that theadvance would not be refundable.

In another case, it was found that it would beunethical for an engineer in responsible chargeof a building renovation design to review andstamp a subcontractor’s plans for a roofingcurb to be installed in the renovation project. These and other cases can be found on theBoard of Ethical Review site on the NSPE web-site, www.nspe.org.

HSPE is still gearing up for its 2012 golf tour-nament. Our tournament is the primaryfundraising vehicle for the Hawaii Mathcountscompetition. (HAPI). Mr. Young’s presentation provided abrief background of HAPI and its members, anoverview of projects currently in progress, andthe services that HAPI provides to the commu-nity. The 2012 Officers were also installed.

KNOW YOUR ASCE HISTORYby C.S. Papacostas

THE LAST STREETCARMentioned in last month’s article was the fact

that the YWCA sold its Fernhurst property atthe northwest corner of Alapai and King Streetsto the Honolulu Rapid Transit (HRT) companyand then moved to the Makiki District in 1952.

Consistently with numerous citations on thesubject, Bernard W. Stern says “HRT, originallyknown as Honolulu Rapid Transit and LandCompany, officially came into being on July 6,1898, the same day on which Hawai’i wasannexed to the United States. On that day bothhouses of the Hawai’i legislature approved thecompany’s request for a franchise to operatean electric railway system in Honolulu. Finalapproval of the franchise was voted on June25, 1900, when the United States Congressenacted the Organic Act, which validated allfranchises granted after July 7, 1898. The firstelectric streetcar in the islands ran on August31, 1901 [see “Rutledge Unionism,” Universityof Hawaii Press, 1986].”

The electric streetcar company out-compet-ed the older Hawaiian Tramways, Ltd., thatoperated a steel-wheel-on-steel track, mule-drawn tram system since 1888.

Stern continues, “The original owners anddirectors of HRT were mainly ‘mission boys’(direct descendants of missionaries) and thoserelated to missionary families by marriage. Theoriginal directors included Lorrin A. Thurston, publisher of the Advertiser, and W. R. Castle, aprominent attorney, both of whom had beenactively engaged in the overthrow of themonarchy in 1893 and in the government of theHawaii Republic that ruled the islands untilannexation in 1898. Their heirs were part of theHRT Board until the late 1950’s when an out-sider, Harry Weinberg, took over control of thecompany.”

William Richard Castle was the son ofSamuel Northrup Castle who, with Amos StarrCooke, founded the Castle and CookeCompany in 1851. It so happens that the patri-arch of the Atherton family who had given thefirst Fernhurst property to the YWCA wasJoseph Ballard Atherton who had begun hiscareer as a clerk withCastle and Cooke aftercoming to Hawai`i in1858. He married Amos’daughter JulietteMontague Cooke androse to the presidency ofthe company, one of the“Big Five” firms that forall practical purposescontrolled or had amajor influence on theeconomy of Hawai`i.

So the Athertons hadboth kinship and profes-sional relationships withboth sides of the trans-action that placed theFernhurst propertyunder the ownership ofHRT.

The 1927 SanbornFire map shown belowillustrates that HRT

maintained its car barn and electric powerhouse in the lot bounded on three sides byBeretania, Alapai and South Hotel Streets, whereas the adjacent Fernhurst property(bounded by South Hotel, Alapai and SouthKing Streets) would be a natural extension.

By the way, shown on the map is the footprintof the Fernhurst homestead (number 2533) as Idescribed it last month (March 2012). The par-enthetical number (912) is the designation ofthe structure that occupied the same location(the Atherton residence) as shown in the earlier(1914) fire map. Interestingly, what isshown as “S. HOTEL” street on the 1927 mapis denoted as “YOUNG” street in the 1914 ver-sion. At that time, apparently, Hotel Street ter-minated at Alapai.

By the time of the sale in 1951, HRT hadabandoned the operation of electric streetcars, having added motor buses to its vehicle fleetsince 1925 (first gasoline and later dieselbuses). A 20-year period of also running elec-tric trolley buses lasted from 1937 until 1957,after which time no the longer needed powerhouse was dismantled and the facility wasreplaced wholly with diesel bus yard opera-tions.

Roy S. Melvin and Robert Ramsay, authors ofa 1960 monograph titled “Hawaiian Tramways,”describe the last electric streetcar run evoca-tively:

“At two o’clock on the afternoon of June 31,1941, car 47 left the HRT carhouse. Number47’s run that day was unusual. To begin with, itwas an old open car, one of those originallybuilt about 1908. In addition, the car sportedone of the largest leis ever made, which circledit completely. At the controller was George Bell, son of Jack Bell who ran HRT’s first car in 1901.The car ran over the remaining rail line all after-noon and evening … The end finally came at1:30 a.m. on July 1, 1941.”
