November 6.
VETERAN LEADERS
IUP will be led by senior Morgan Cerveny, who fi nished
third on the team with 203 kills in 2011. She had eight double-
digit kill matches, going for a season-high 14 against Seton Hill
and Mercyhurst, and was second on the team with 66 blocks.
She enters this year with 587 career kills, easily within reach of
IUP’s all-time top 10.
Newcomers Aubree Frye and Stephanie Kruzynski will
also look to see time on the right side.
In addition to Cerveny, IUP boasts four other
returning starters. Of the squad’s 19 players, 12 are

the IUP off ense from the setter position, averaging
nearly eight assists per set as she totaled 813 for the
season. Senior Sarah Alman will provide experience
at the position.
OUTSIDE HITTERS
Hester and Bailey combined for 316 kills a
year ago as both were off ensive threats from the
outside hitter position. Hester proved to be multi-

Senior Carly Kowalski and sophomore
Ericka Lentz provide depth at the position, along
with freshmen Sarah Smiley and Lisa Kissell.MIDDLE BLOCKER

44 2012 IUP Volleyball INFORMATION guide
Zach Shaver enters
his seventh season as the IUP
head volleyball coach in 2012
after leading the Crimson
Hawks to an 11 win season a
year ago.
Under Shaver, senior
Danielle Ostendorf was
selected to her second All-
PSAC squad last season and
fi nished her career with 902
kills, which is eighth in IUP
history.
Shaver’s best season
at IUP came in 2010, when
the Crimson Hawks fi nished with a record of 21-11 and a trip to
the NCAA tournament for the second time in Shaver’s tenure.
Th e season marked the fi rst time IUP had eclipsed 20 wins
under Shaver, and was highlighted by the selection of Emily
Pany as the IUP Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Th e libero
set the all-time PSAC record with 2,670 digs, and she holds
three of the top 15 single-season dig totals in conference history.
In 2009, the Crimson Hawks fi nished 17-16 and were
ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region at the end of the season.
Th at would have qualifi ed the Crimson Hawks for the NCAA
tournament for the fi rst time since Shaver’s fi rst team in 2006,
but an automatic bid from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association denied the Crimson Hawks a spot in the eight-team
fi eld.
In addition to directing the IUP volleyball program,
Shaver was selected by the Keystone Region Volleyball
Association to be the head coach of the region’s High
Performance Girls’ Select team in the summer of 2009. Th e
team traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in July and earned a silver
medal at the USAV High Performance Championships.
Shaver’s team completed the fi ve-day tournament with
their only loss coming in the championship match to Southern
California. Shaver and assistant Shay Moreno have been chosen
to lead the KRVA High Performance Girls’ Select team in the
2010 championships in Wisconsin Dells in late July.
Shaver came to IUP from Texas State, where he served
as an assistant coach since June 2002. Shaver was part of a
coaching staff that turned around the fortunes of the Texas State
volleyball program. After going 10-21 in 2002, the Bobcats had
a record of 67-29 from 2003-05, won the Southland Conference
title and played in the NCAA Division I tournament in 2004 and
2005.
Before heading to Texas State, Shaver was an assistant
coach at his alma mater, California State-Chico, from January
to December 2000. He was interim head coach at Chico State
for four months from December 2000 to the following April.
Shaver was also the men’s club team head coach at
Chico State from 1998-01 and the women’s club team head
coach in 2002. Th ree times he led his squads to ninth place
fi nishes at the NIRSA national championship tournament,
including the men’s team in 2000 and 2001 and the women’s
squad in 2002.
Shaver’s experience also includes head coaching
stints at a pair of high schools in California. He directed
the volleyball program at Biggs High School from 1995-97
and Orland High School from 1997-2000. Shaver has also
coached and directed club teams and served as an instructor
at several volleyball camps.
Shaver earned his bachelor of arts degree in physical
education from Chico State in 2002 and received his master
of education degree in sport and recreation management
from Texas State in 2006. While an undergraduate of Chico
State, Shaver was a three-year setter on the men’s club team.
Shaver and his wife, Sandra, are the parents of Nicole
(7), Matthew (5) and Brandon (3).

Paige Johnston enters
her second season as the IUP
assistant volleyball coach in
2012 after helping guide the
Crimson Hawks to an 11 win
season a year ago.
Johnston was also
instrumental in guiding
senior Danielle Ostendorf
to her second All-PSAC
selection in 2011.
Prior to IUP, Johnston
was an assistant at Kenyon
College in 2010. It was there that she helped Kenyon to its
best record in six seasons, with three players – all freshmen –
earning all-conference honors.
Johnston received her bachelor’s degree in
communication arts from Juniata College in 2010, where she
enjoyed a successful four-year playing career for the Division
III power.
As a senior, she helped the Eagles to the national
championship game, earning fi rst team All-Landmark
Conference and honorable mention AVCA all-region honors.
As a freshman in 2006, she was named the conference’s rookie
ASSISTANT COACH PAIGE JOHNSTON
of the year as the Eagles won their second national
title in three seasons.
In all, Johnston was a three-time all-
conference performer, totaling 948 kills, 206 blocks,
350 digs and had a .220 hitting percentage while at
Juniata.
A native of Lancaster County in
Pennsylvania, she experienced great success at the
high school level as well, helping Hempfi eld to a state
championship in 2004.

KOVALCHICK COMPLEX
1212 2012 IUP Volleyball INFORMATION guide
TO ENRICH THE QUALITY OF on-campus living, construction began on a Residential Revival project in 2006. The result has been spectacular.
eginning in May 2006, IUP embarked
on a comprehensive revitalization
of its housing that will provide space
for 3,900 students when the fi nal phase of
the project is completed in fall 2010. Th e $270-million
project, the largest of its kind in the nation, has made
IUP a school of choice for an expanding number of stu-
dents.
Within these living and learning communities, IUP of-
fers a wide array of specialty fl oors so that students who
share academic interests may live near each other. For
those who desire extra quiet, study-intensive fl oors with
stricter noise regulations are available.
With information from students themselves on what
amenities were most important to them, the Foundation
for IUP and the university mapped out an aggressive
course of action that has led to replacement of nearly all
of the university’s residence halls.
Th ere are four diff erent suite confi gurations with the
opportunity to share a suite with one person or three.
Students have more control over their privacy since some
suites off er single sleeping quarters, and they share a
bathroom with only one person.
Each fl oor in the new suites has laundry facilities, a
kitchenette and lounge space as well as ample meeting
space. Many offi ces that perform student services are
conveniently located in the ground fl oor of these new
buildings.
A boulevard-style landscaped street is planned to link
downtown Indiana to campus and to the Kovalchick
Convention and Athletic Complex.
