We’ll make your car look brand new!

Every time this year students, parents and football fans around the country get ready for the kickoff of the fall football season. Whether you’re a fan of a particular college or pro team, or just enjoy the excitement of a Friday night high school game, this is truly the most exciting time of year for me as a sports fan. Putting this section together has been an enjoyable challenge. Most sports journalists I know truly enjoy the sports they cover and the job that puts them on the sidelines to watch the action unfold. It says a lot about football in our corner of Central Texas that two of the five LISD schools are ranked in the top ten of the Associated Press preseason poll for UIL Class 4A teams in Texas. Expectations and hopes are high for both Cedar Park — ranked No. 2 in the poll, and Leander — at the No. 7 spot. Both teams re-turn talented players on both sides of the ball. Both teams had success last year that, while important, surely left fans and players wanting more. Rouse made significant steps last year, win-ning a couple of games, but more importantly,

the Raiders were competitive in most of the games they played. People talk about manag-ing expectations for a young program at a new school. But, I like that Coach Josh Mann doesn’t seem to buy into that concept. He wants success now, and coaches the players to expect success. I expect Rouse to make more history this season and can’t wait to see how their season unfolds. By all accounts, Vista Ridge’s 2011 season was a bit disappointing. The Rangers came into last fall with solid players, including several who have now gone on to play football at the next level. But injuries hampered their efforts and what resulted a season Vista Ridge fans and players don’t want to repeat this year. Coach Rodney Vincent is an upbeat guy. He understands the unpredictable challenges the Rangers faced last year, but his expectations are to compete for the district title every year and he instills that kind of confidence in his players. I believe anyone counting Vista Ridge out of the playoff picture will be in for a sur-prise. This will be a challenging district. Even though we don’t talk much about Dripping Springs, Marble Falls or Vandegrift, all three

pose significant threat to take at least one of the four playoff spots from the district. Without question, though, Leander and Cedar Park will be the teams to beat in Dis-trict 25-4A. Both have amazing potential this season. There is an energy and atmosphere of anticipation that is palpable on both campuses. Following their matchup on Sept. 28, which opens district play for both teams, a victor will emerge. While that team may take the dis-trict title, I fully expect these teams to meet for a rematch in the playoffs, where the stakes may well be for a shot at a state championship.

LEANDER—Shortly after taking over as LISD Athletic Di-rector earlier this year, former Cedar Park head football coach and athletic director Chris Ross told the Hill Country News that one of his goals was to implement a new online ticketing system for LISD schools. “The technology is there, and it will save time and money,” said Ross. It didn’t take long. Earlier this month, the school district announced that ticket sales were moving online, and that tickets will no longer be sold at the athletic offices or on school cam-puses. A new website, leanderisdtickets.com, was launched to handle sales of season tickets and parking passes for LISD’s five high schools. Re-served season tickets will cost $41 per seat for five home games. A lim-ited number of reserved parking passes are on sale for $12. Though the period for purchasing season passes for the three stadi-

ums in the school district closed on Aug. 24, season ticket holders will have more time to re-purchase their reserved seats next season. This season, any tickets not sold by the Aug. 24 deadline are now available to the public as individual game tickets, which can be purchased either at the gate for $8 or on the ticketing website the week before a game at a reduced price of $7.50 per seat.

Leander Independent School District is introducing a new “Family Pass” ticket plan this fall. At a cost of $75 per family, the pass will allow all members of an im-mediate family entry into all LISD home sporting venues except varsity football games. The passes can be purchased at the LISD Athletic Department office at 202 W. South Street in Leander. For more information, call Beverly Hans at 512-570-0166.

By SCOTT W. [email protected]

Four straight playoff seasons. Two straight regional championships. None of that means much to this year’s team. Senior linebacker Jackson Paine, who was named one of the team captains by his team-mates last week said the Timberwolves are reaching for bigger goals this year. “Every year we get better and better. But this year, I feel like we finally have the key to success and we’re going to open that door,” Paine said. It’s hard to argue with the success of past seasons. Under head coach Chris Ross — now LISD athletics director — Cedar Park became a state powerhouse, a threat to make a deep run in the playoffs every season. This year Joe Willis, Cedar Park’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the past five seasons, steps in to replace Ross as head coach. No one expects the goals or results to change very much. After serving a short period as interim coach, Willis was officially named head coach during the team’s spring camp. One key job at the time was finding a replacement for Brian Hogan, who now holds the school’s records for passing, scoring and career touchdown passes. Senior Ethan Fry — whose 28 catches set a school record last season, did see time behind center last season but mainly as a run threat — was one of the frontrunners going into spring camp. Fry’s 574 rushing yards and four TDs last year showed his versatility. “He’s electric,” Willis said.

But, Nate Grimm, a 6-4, 180-pound junior this season stepped up big time in the spring, show-ing competence as a passer with mobility in the backfield. Most of the time, having two talented play-ers vying for the starting quarterback job cre-ates controversy. But new head coach Joe Willis is embrac-ing the concept, saying: “We have two talented guys. Both of them are way too talented to be on the sidelines with me.” Cedar Park plans to use both QBs in a va-riety of situational packages. Willis says it will allow the T’Wolves to get the best out of Fry’s talents as a runner and receiver. “Ethan is one of the best receivers we’ve had come through here. The challenge for us is to figure out how to get him the ball in space,” said Willis. Loaded with talent at receiver and running back, and with the largest offensive line in the

district, Cedar Park’s offense might even sur-pass last year’s record-breaking season. Defensively, the T’Wolves have the benefit of several talented players competing for start-ing jobs. Willis says even some sophomores have stepped up and may win starting jobs be-fore the final roster is set. This season’s Cedar Park players say they are united by a single goal. It’s become a mantra of sorts for the team — Dec. 21, the date set for the 4A state championship game in Dallas.

Summary

With a massive offensive line and plenty of play-making ability on both sides of the ball, Cedar Park looks to have another stellar season this year. Lake Travis is out. Leander is in as the key district rivalry. And the stakes in that game (Sept. 28 at Gupton) may well be for the district title and much more.

Offense

Defense

Cedar Park plans to use both Nate Grimm and Ethan Fry at quarterback this season. A dynamic player, Fry is mobile and an outstanding receiver. Grimm has the arm to make the deep throws that could be a game-changing addition to the T’Wolves’ offense. Nathan Harwell and others should step up until Thomas Middleton returns later in the season.

The T’Wolves only return three starters on defense from last year’s regional championship team. Jack-son Paine will anchor the defense at inside linebacker, but there are plenty of other talented players who saw time last year as well as some young standouts Coach Willis says are likely to earn starting spots.

Mayberry made his presence known last season, breaking out for more than 500 offensive yards despite playing behind starter Adrian Duncan. Averag-ing almost six yards per carry with three touchdowns, Mayberry is one of the Rangers’ special talents. And Coach Vincent says he’s only begun to show what he can do.

As a junior, Adrian Duncan put up more than 700 total yards last season, averaging nearly seven yards a carry rushing. On a team loaded with offen-sive talent, Coach Rodney Vincent says Duncan is one of the most valuable players on the fi eld for the Rangers.

A LOOK AT THE RANGERS

of the team’s strengths.

Thomas is one of the larger

defensive players. But, Coach

should be a force on the

line.

After a disappointing 3-7 campaign last season, the Rangers are back and loaded with talent. Coaches have worked throughout spring and summer to have players ready to step into multiple roles if needed. The non-district schedule is a bit less chal-lenging than last year, providing an opportunity to build momentum early. Look for special teams to be a key to the Rangers’ success this season.

Summary

Offense

Defense

Adrian Duncan and Stedman Mayberry are versatile and dangerous weapons. Both are effective running the ball and catching passes, and Coach Vincent says if teams try to take one away, the other can step right in. With what should be an improved passing game this season, the Rangers should be able to stay on the fi eld offensively and put points on the board.

A pair of new safeties have the coach-ing staff excited, and the team returns a linebacking corps with experience and athleticism. Staying healthy will be the key to the Rangers success on defense.

The injuries just kept piling up last season for the Vista Ridge Rangers, derailing what ap-peared to be a promising season for a talented group of players. However, though last year may not have mea-sured up to expectations, there were benefits as many of this year’s squad saw time at multiple positions during last season and helped build a roster loaded with depth at the skill positions. Head coach Rodney Vincent said he’s seen several players develop at the wide receiver po-sition, and he has confidence in their ability to get the job done. “At the running back position, we feel like we’ve got four guys that can carry the football for us. And, we’ve got two quarterbacks right now that can run our offense, so that gives us good depth at that position,” said Vincent. “We feel like we’ve got great depth.” The Rangers boast one of the most potent one-two punches in the district, with senior Adrian Duncan and junior Stedman Mayberry at the running back position. The two com-bined last season for more than 1,300 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns. Both were recognized with all-district honors — Duncan on the first team, Mayberry on the sec-ond team. Defensively, the Rangers return five starters from last year’s team. Junior Micah Thomas is a leader on the defensive line, and Vincent says he is expecting big things from Thomas and what has shaped up to be a very quick and athletic — if not large — defensive squad. “There aren’t any big defensive linemen, but the guys we do have are quick, they’re athletic and they understand leverage,” said Vincent. All four of the linebacker positions have players with varsity experience — one of the positions that benefited from last year’s shuf-fling to fill in for injuries.

Vincent also says that the defensive second-ary is one of the most improved areas on the team. But, the coaching staff isn’t taking any chances with depth this year. “We want to make sure we’ve got guys trained at multiple positions, just in case we get into trouble,” said Vincent. The Rangers had an excellent spring camp earlier this year, and the team has been building on that success in the final weeks of preparation for opening day. “I feel like we’ve got a real coachable group of kids that really understand what we’re do-ing.” The coaching staff placed substantial empha-sis on special teams during the spring and sum-mer, and Vincent says he believes special teams, or as the Rangers call them, ‘Special Forces’ will be a game changer this season.

“We’ve got a lot of players on this team who take a lot of pride in special teams work. We want to make sure that group feels like when they’re on the field, they have a chance to help us win the game,” said Vincent.

By SCOTT W. [email protected]

A heartbreaking loss to open the season at Desoto — a longtime 5A powerhouse — kicked off Clint Harper’s first season as head coach in Leander. After a slow start that included close losses to Converse Judson and Cedar Park, the team reeled off eight straight wins and capped the season by going two rounds into the playoffs. Last season was a success, but Harper says he is hoping for bigger things this year. “We’re just so far ahead of where we were last year,” said Harper, who was named Coach of the Year following last season’s 8-4 campaign. Having nine returning starters on defense is just one thing that has Harper excited. Defen-sive backs Daryl Brooks, Taylor Sugar and Leo Quintana highlight a defense Harper says is fast and athletic. The second year coach also says linebacker Hayden Newsom’s leadership on and off the field is vital to the team’s success. “Scheme-wise, we’re just so much further ahead on defense. (Having) so many guys com-ing back and not having to start over,” said Harp-er. Offensively, the Lions have been retooling af-ter losing last year’s All District Offensive Player of the Year Andres Barrera and Offensive Line-man of the Year Jacob Dunning in addition to three other first team players. However, incoming quarterback Caleb Woodward showed his ability to deliver under pressure last season, connecting with Peyton Til-ley for 22 yards on a critical fourth and long to close out the regular season against McNeil.

Woodward also rushed for six touchdowns and more than 250 yards and caught six passes. “We’ve got a tremendous athlete at quarter-back,” said Harper of Woodward, who just this summer verbally committed to play football at Texas Tech. “He’s doing a great job. He can do some spe-

cial things,” added Harper. Woodward says the entire offense worked hard this spring to adjust to his scrambling style of play. “I feel good about our offense. We haven’t really had a scrambler ... and I feel like our of-fensive line and our receivers, are really getting adjusted to it,” said Woodward. “We’re trying to come out and be very explo-sive,” said the new quarterback. Harper is quick to point out that Woodward isn’t the only threat offensively. “Tevin Smith’s going to be a big player for us on offense,” said Harper. “You get the ball to Caleb, and you get the ball to Tevin, and when teams try to take those two away, you have Dylan Bauer who is an all district running back returning. We’ve got a lot of weap-ons on offense,” said Harper.

A LOOK AT THE RAIDERS

Player to watch: JUSTIN PELT The Rouse Raiders made school his-

tory by claiming the first two regular season wins last season This year, the Raiders return more starters than any other team in District 25-4A. Los-ing last year’s receiving leader Wesley Lewis to a foot injury will hurt. If they can avoid being one-dimensional on offense and protect Justin Pelt, the Raiders have every chance of making more history this year by reaching the postseason.

Summary

Offense

Defense

Senior Justin Pelt leads an offense with eight returning starters including a host of talented players. The loss of 6-5 senior wideout Lewis, the dis-trict’s leading returning receiver will force adjustments. But, Logan Kinder has the speed and the hands to step in and help keep the offense moving.

Senior linebacker Tim Lapaglia anchors a defense with nine returning starters who should cause trouble for opponents looking to move the ball on the Raiders. The schedule gives the Raiders a decided home field advantage, which usually benefits the defense.

LOGAN KINDER

The speedy Kinder moves from the slot into the backfield where he will help lead the way for the Raiders’ offense. For Rouse High School’s first varsity team with seniors, last season was a learning experience. “It was good to get those two wins ... put them under our belt and know what it feels like to win. It was a great learning experience for all the guys that will be se-niors this year,” said quarter-back Justin Pelt, who is one of only two returning starters at quarterback in District 25-4A. Head coach Josh Mann said, “We learned a tre-mendous amount from last season. Luckily with so many starters (returning), we’ve seen most of our guys up against top talent.”

Mann said he is happy with the progress the team made in the spring, and that the coaching staff has been able to develop offensive and defensive game plans to fit a talented group of players. A tough district schedule awaits the Raiders — one Mann says is probably the toughest 4A district in the state. While last year showed the team what it feels like to win, Pelt said he and the other starters feel confident they can learn what it feels like to make it to the postseason this year. “What really matters is (district) and then the next step is playoffs,” Pelt said “If we accomplish those goals a lot of our personal goals will come with it.”

We will show a lot of people that we have built some-thing good here.

Aug. 31, Hendrickson—A potent Hawks rushing attack will chal-lenge the Raiders in the season opener. A win here would give the young program solid momentum.

Nov. 2, Vandegrift—This match between the two up-and-comers in District 25-4A is likely to help set the playoff field.

Nov. 9, Vista Ridge—The final game of the regular season last year was a battle. The Raiders will hope to claim victory this year.

The Rangers only return fi ve

starters from last year’s defense,

but this should still be one

of the team’s strengths.

At 6’2” and 225 pounds,

junior defensive end Micah

Thomas is one of the larger

defensive players. But, Coach

Vincent says Thomas is a fast

and physical pass rusher who

should be a force on the

CEDAR PARK – Two different lines of thought seem to both have equal merit, depending upon your point of view, about the prospects of the Hill Country Knights’ upcoming 2012 six-man football season, given the fact that head coach Philip Hudgens returns exactly zero starters on either offense or defense after each of the last two seasons ended in the TAPPS state quarter-finals. The talented class of 2012 is now gradu-ated, taking with it seven consensus all-district performers. The obvious line of thought would be that this will be a rebuilding year for the Knights. The other, how-ever, is that Hud-gens, entering his eleventh season as the only head coach in the Hill Country program’s history, will conduct one of his hasty reloading overhauls, and have his highly-regarded spread offense in high gear sooner than later. Because of the talent he sees in his new front line players, Hudgens himself tends to lean more toward the latter. “I can promise you this,” said Hudgens. “With these guys being this young and hav-ing this much athleticism, the team you see in Week Zero will not be the team you see in Week Ten. They’re learning every day how ca-pable they are.” “I really like what I’ve seen the last two weeks, and I attribute that to our one senior leader (Matthew Pantoja), and the fact that this is a great group of kids; they’re a ton of fun.” Hudgens’ current plan is for Pantoja to join sophomore Noah Monteiro as the up backs in his revamped spread, with Monteiro’s twin brother Jackson in critical role as the new

spread back. The first critical component that makes the spread offense work efficiently is a clean snap from center, and that responsibility will be in the hands of freshman Collin Ras-mussen. Junior Jack Horton will spell Rasmussen at times, allowing Rasmussen to move to spread back. Rasmussen, along with Pantoja, is left-handed, and that will give the Knights the un-usual potential for running more option pays to the left. Seeing some sure-handed tendencies in his young charges during fall workouts has given Hudgens hope that his passing attack will keep defenses from stacking up against the Knights’ running game. “We had three drops out of 224 passes,” Hudgens said of one day’s non-contact drills last week. Whether that translates to field once the lights come on will determine how much

pressure defensive coordinator Jeff Marx’s unit will have to contend with as he also rebuilds with no returning starters. Pantoja and both Monteiros will figure into the defensive mix, as will sophomore defen-sive lineman Michael Dennis and junior Joseph Kertz. Rasmussen, Horton, and junior David Corliss and speedy freshman Colton Radney should all contribute in the secondary. Noah Monteiro is actually the team’s one returning starter anywhere on the field, and that is at place kicker. Monteiro had a very ef-fective freshman year, giving the Knights an edge when it came to the two-point conversion kicks of the six-man game. Despite the loss of so much talent, Hudgens is quick to remind that history would indicate the Knights should not be easily written off. “People forget how good we were when last year’s seniors were sophomores,” said Hudgens.

Not necessarily a ‘rebuilding’ year
