Rick Spittler, NICA Board President

Stricken with polio as a baby, which affected the use of his left leg, Rick grew up using the bicycle as a way to “keep up” with the other kids running around the neighborhood. He has continued to be an avid cyclist, commuting to work on his bike as well as riding

mountain and road bikes for recreation.

As a social entrepreneur, Rick has been the founder, executive director and board president of numerous non-profit organizations. Much of his work has been on increasing sport and recreational opportunities for youth on a local, regional and national level.

“In terms of Youth Development, the values, policies and standards for excellence established by NorCal are the reasons I am so inspired with this opportunity to work with NICA. These values include, the promotion of girls participating equally, fostering responsible use of trails and wilderness and contributing back to the community. With NICA, everyone pitches in.”

She is currently a Level 2 USA Cycling coach. Dave and

Lori met a SoCal coach at USAC’s Coaches Summit last October and discovered NICA. That discovery and our desire to pass on the passion we have for cycling to future generations has led us to where we are today. Lori has loved racing with her Ski Utah Women’s Team. She has five kids and is passionately committed to make a difference for Utah’s youth through this positive program.

Coaching License

The Washington League offers a High School Coaching License. Licenses are available at three levels: Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Ride Leader. For the 2011/2012 season, all teams are required to have a licensed head coach. In addition, all Asst. Coaches and Ride Leaders must obtain a League Coaching License. For the inaugural year (2010/2011 – racing in 2011), this requirement will be waived. See below for more information about our Coaching License Program.

The NICA High School Coaching License Program

The purpose of this program is to ensure that all head coaches, assistant coaches and ride leaders are sufficiently knowledgeable so as to be a positive influence on all NICA riders. NICA licenses also protect volunteers and coaches with comprehensive insurance, as well as protect our youth with background checks.

Coaching License Levels General Volunteer License: Minimum requirement for all adults riding with NICA high school teams. This license protects volunteers with comprehensive insurance, and protects our youth with background checks.Ride Leader License: Recommended training level for all adults riding with NICA high school teams in the ride support role.Assistant Coach License: Recommended training level for all adults riding the NICA teams in a role beyond just ride support.Head Coach License Required training level for the Head Coach (or Team Director). All NICA teams are required to have a licensed Head Coach (or Team Director). Grace periods apply to first year Leagues and first year teams.

The requirements for each NICA license level are outlined below.

2012 LEADERS SUMMITThe NICA High School Coaching License Program

Background Checks: Background checks are required for all licenses and are offered through TC Logiq. Each exam costs ~$24 (though it may cost more depending on your specific search requirements). To begin the process, please visit http://www.tclogiq.com/nica

Continuing Education: In order to maintain a current Head Coach Certification, an individual must keep her/his WFA- MTB certification current and engage in 9 hours of professional development hours (Continuing Education Units) every 3 years. Continuing Education Units are available at the Leaders’ Summit offered every year by the League. NICA has partnered with the Positive Coaching Alliance to provide an additional way to obtain continuing education units. More information on this program will be available soon.

Exam: The exam can be taken after studying the Coaching Manual and attending Professional Development Seminars. The exam will be administered at the Leaders’ Summit (or another time with approval of League Director). The exam tests an individual’s knowledge of risk management, skills instruction, first aid and other skills deemed important to coaching a high school mountain bike team. It is recommended that individuals take the exam only after attending the League Professional Development Seminars and studying the Coaches’ Manual.

Field Work: Field work is actual hours spent in contact with high school students while engaged in a high school mountain bike program. Individuals wanting to obtain certification must keep a log of fieldwork hours, which must be signed by a head coach (for assistant coaches and ride leaders) and by two parents and certified head coach from another team (for head coaches).

General Volunteer License: This license is intended to be a starting point for adults looking to work with high school teams. General Volunteer license holders are covered under the League’s comprehensive liability insurance.

Professional Development Seminars are offered at the League’s Leaders’ Summit, which is held annually in the fall. Topics range (some of these are required) from Leadership and Management of a High School Team to Working Successfully with Teenagers to Managing Risk and Maximizing Safety to Creating Appropriate Training Programs, as well as MTB 101: Learn the Skills to Teach the Skills. In the future, Ride Leaders will be able to obtain hours through courses outside the Leaders’ Summit. However, such a program has not yet been established.

Wilderness First Aid/Mountain Bike (WFA-MTB): This 16–hour course is designed specifically for the high school mountain bike coach and ride leader; it is offered annually by the Washington League. Certification lasts for 3 years. Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification also meets this requirement. Those with other current WFA certificates may petition the League Director for the recognition of those certificates. Utah is considering hosting a WFA-MTB seminar in June.
