Welcome to Westland, the All American City!

Today you will enjoy craft ales the way they were meant

to be enjoyed - cask conditioned and with fellow beer acio-

nados! Ive been told Ashleys Cask Ale Festival gets better

every year and this year is no different with several brewers

scheduled to be on hand to answer questions and meet withattendees.

I would encourage you to head back to Westland on

September 15th and 16th for our second annual Blues,

Brews & BBQ. This two day event, held on City Hall

grounds at 36601 Ford Road, will be fun-lled and will

showcase the areas hottest BBO, a car show full of cars from around Southeast

Michigan, handcrafted beers (served up by Ashleys) and some of the greatest

performers around. Westlands very own American Idol Josh Gracin will perform afree two hour concert on Saturday, September 15.

For more information on this event, be sure to visit cityofwestland.com for details.

    Cheers!

Cask Ale: The Craft Beer of Craft BeerMost of the time when you go into a bar or a brewery, you have two choices in beer:

draft or bottle. A small number of places offer a third option: Cask ale. But what is

    cask ale?

Cask ale is also known as real ale, cask-conditioned beer, or hand-pulled beer. We

like to call it the craft beer of craft beer. It differs from conventional draft or keg

beer in that its alive. That is to say, it is not ltered or pasteurized in any way, so it

contains live, active yeast that have been left to ferment and mature the beer naturally.

This process results in a gentle, natural carbonation and complex, delicate avors that

simply dont exist in ltered keg beer.

Cask beer is never served with extraneous gas, whether CO2 or nitrogen, but is

usually dispensed straight from the cask (this is known as gravity dispense) or

through the use of a beer engine, AKA a hand pull. Either method ensures the freshest

    possible pour.

Most establishments even those friendly to craft beer prefer not to handle cask

ales because they have a shorter shelf life (and less prot potential) compared toltered beers. At Ashleys, we just wouldnt feel right if we didnt offer our guests

the chance to try beer the way its traditionally been made and enjoyed for centuries.

Today you can sample from more than 20 of such beers, but any time you come to

Ashleys, we have two hand pulls that we regularly serve cask ale from, so you can

count on getting your x of beers the way God and the brewers intended them to

    be served! Enjoy.

    Welcome to Ashleys:

    A Higher Education in Beer

Founded in 1983 next to the University of

Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Ashleys has

been proud to serve its guests a wide selection of

great beers from around the world for nearly threedecades. You can think of us as offering a higher

    education in beer.

    Today, as Michigans premier multi-tap,

Ashleys features an ever-rotating lineup of a-

vorful draft beers from nearly 120 different taps

at our original Ann Arbor location and here in

Westland, not to mention our more than 80 bottled

beer selections. People seem to like that about us:Ashleys was rated one of the Top 100 beer bars

by DRAFT Magazine and Top 50 beer restaurants

by RateBeer.com for 2012. And weve been voted

as having Metro Detroits Best Beer Selection

by WDIV-TV4 viewers four years in a row.

But were not resting on our laurels. We created

the Michigan Cask Ale Festival a few years ago to

showcase a third kind of beer beyond conventional

draft and bottle: Cask ale, also known as real ale.

This event requires months of planning and work-

ing through our strong relationships with brewers

and distributors. We traveled throughout the state

to personally deliver our own Ashleys casks to

breweries for them to ll with unique, fresh beer

and then put it all together the second Saturday in

May at this, the largest festival of its kind any-where in Michigan. Its a lot of work, but we think

when you taste these live beers youll agree with

    us that its worth it.

So welcome to Ashleys, the place that was craft

beer before craft beer was cool. We hope you en-

joy your experience at the 5th Michigan Cask Ale

Festival, and we welcome your feedback on how

we can make this annual event even better!

    Southeastern Michigan

    welcomes you to the Fifth

    Ashleys Michigan Cask Ale

Festival - the largest Festival of

    its kind in Michigan. Michigan

    has been through some hard

    times this past decade but

    through these difculties many

    businesses have persevered and

    new businesses have been born.

One area of growth worth noting

    is the expansion of Michigans

    craft brewers. Michigan made

    beer means Michigan jobs

and we have seen an exciting

increase in the number of small

    business brewers offering their

    hand crafted beverages.

So raise a glass to your local

    brew-master, enjoy your time

in Westland and please join us

for future events such as the

    Westland Blues, Brews and

    BBQ on September 15th and

    16th.

    Check-in

To help keep the beers as fresh as possible we do not tap all of the casks

at one time. We will have four casks tapped when the doors open and

then we will tap a new cask every 10 minutes. The smaller wood casks

will not be tapped until the middle of the afternoon so everyone can get

    a chance to try them.

All beers are served in a tasting glass (do not lose yours) and beers are

one token each except where noted in the program.

    Table 1 Outside Tapping Time

Greenbush Red Bud w/ Black Tea Noon

Our signature copper wheat ale with a mind of its own. Apparently,

a lot of our beers have a personality disorder and Red Bud is no

exception. A directionally challenged ale, hopped just enough to make

it cross paths with a pale ale. Red Bud - one sure way to get lost. Thiscask has been dry hopped with black tea! 6.1% ABV

    Epic Hopulent 12:30

Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt avor and exces-

sive hops. This beer will have changes to the grain bill and seasonal

hop changes. The character of Hopulent IPA is over the top, too much

of everythinga real HOP HEADS DELIGHT!

Arbor Brewing Company Framboozled 1:30The newest addition to their sour series is richly complex and reminis-

cent of brandy-soaked dark fruits, toasted nuts, and a sweet balsamic

reduction. Framboozled features a hint of barnyard funk from extended

barrel aging in the presence of friendly microbes. Casked in Ashleys

Sour Wood Cask adding extra oak and vanilla avors! 7.7% ABV

New Holland The Poet Stout 2:30

A rich, smooth malt character enveloped in tones of roast andchocolate. A soft mouth-feel brings luxurious avors and soothing

    aroma. 5.2% ABV

    Table 3 Patio Tapping Time

    Arbor Brewing Company Buzzsaw Noon

A big, bold hop-forward West Coast style IPA. The malt character is

subdued to showcase a blend of Simcoe, Amarillo, and Centennial

hops creating a lingering dry nish with notes of pine, grapefruit, and

    apricot. 7.5% ABV

Bells Porter 12:30Porter emphasizes the darker, roasted aspects of malt. Hints of dark

chocolate and freshly roasted coffee provide the focus, while hops

remain in the background. Not as full-bodied as a stout, Porter bridges

the gap between malty brown ales and our more heavily roasted stouts.

    Table 2 Outside Tapping Time

Blue Point White IPA w/Simcoe Noon

An unltered European-style white ale with a fresh American IPA nish.

Brewed with malted and unmalted wheat and just the right amount of

West Coast hops, its fermented with Belgian yeast to give it a perfectly

balanced character with less bitterness than traditional IPAs. 6% ABV

Vivant Triomphe Belgian Style IPA 12:40

Made with a classic Belgian style yeast strain that gives the complexity

and slight sweetness you may expect from a Belgian style ale. The beer

then reaches deeper providing a smack-down of American grown hops

to turn the style on its head. It has a light caramel color, is strongly bitter

    with a fruity citrus aroma.

Wolverine Coconut Pineapple Maibock 1:40Traditional Maibock brewed with Munich and Pilsner malt. All German

hops, primarily Tettnang and Hallertau varieties. It is balanced perfectly

with a hoppy spiciness that nishes a tad dry and quenches the thirst

on a warm spring day. Take all that, then add coconut and pineapple? A

beer that has all the characteristics of a great German lager with all the

soothing avors of a relaxed Hawaiian vacation.

Arcadia Cereal Killer 2:40Brewed in the tradition of English style barley wines, Cereal Killer

offers an explosion of full-bodied, liquid goodness. Robust malty avors

converge with caramel, toffee, molasses and dark fruit notes to produce

a remarkably complex yet palate-pleasing beer. Its intense malt character

is complemented by a subtle citrus nish from the hops. 10% ABV

    Rate It!

Table 3 (cont.) Patio Tapping Time

Kuhnhenn DRIPA 2012 World Beer Cup Gold Medal 1:30

This gold colored West Coast style Double Rice India Pale Ale has an

intense hop nose, with aromas mainly of citrus. The high hop character

dominates this IPAs avor prole. Made with American long grain rice,

it is quite difcult to make but the rice contributes to this beers crisp

    aftertaste. 9.5% ABV

    Hofstetten Granit Bock 2:30

    2 Tokens

Granite stones are heated to be white hot and added to the wort. This

causes the sugars in the malt to caramelize around the stones and gives

the beer lovely caramel and roasted avors. It also gives the Granit Bock

a unique smoked avor. Served from a wood cask from the brewer!

Table 4 Party Room Tapping Time

    Founders Reds Rye PA Noon

Serious hop bitterness, along with an unyielding grapefruit bouquet

from the Amarillo dry hop, balances the malty richness of four varieties

of imported Belgian caramel malts. Pours a spectacular crimson with acreamy tan head. A generous addition of rye malt accentuates a spicy,

    crisp nish. 6.6% ABV

    Saugatuck Continuum Imperial IPA 1:00

Imperial IPA, 8.9%, 110 IBUs, Copper/Orange in color - Amazing

amounts of earthy, oral, fruity and citrus aromas & avors. Brewed

with Centennial, Nugget and Cascade hops - dry hopped with Cascades

    and Nugget.

Arbor Brewing Company Mackinaw Fudge Stout 2:00

A roasty, dry stout made with real fudge for a subtle chocolate-fudge

character without being sweet or heavy. Aged a couple weeks in an

Ashleys wood cask, taste the subtle wood effect! 5.5% ABV

Midland Pine River Smoked Porter 3:00

Brown Ale with reddish/orange hues. Off white head. Sweet malty

aroma. Delicate roast coffee avor. Medium to full bodied. Moderate

    hop nish. Well balanced Ale.

Table 5 D Bar Tapping Time

    Atwater Grand Cirus IPA 12:10

A nice and easy, deliciously hoppy IPA only 5% ABV and works

perfect with a day in the park.

Liberty Street Clementine Lemon Thyme 1:10

A light American wheat style beer with an aroma and avor of fresh,

savory thyme, nishing with a citrus cleansing to balance the avor.

    5.5% ABV

Dark Horse Smells Like Weed IPA 2:10

Very grassy. Lots of citrus and oral hops in the taste. Floral hops very

prevalent in the nose. 9% ABV

    The Livery Anvil IPA 3:10

North American malt meets Pacic Northwest American hops for a

perfectly balanced IPA. This is denitely our hoppiest beer and is a hop

oak. Find your way to the surface with this Adit. 6.0% A.B.V.

Harviestoun Old Engine Oil Engineers Reserve 2:20

2 TokensIntensely avoured but ridiculously smooth, this is our fabulous Old

Engine Oil brewed up to 9% ABV. Originally created as the base of our

award-winning Ola Dubh, our master-brewer enjoyed it so much he feltit deserved its own release. Rich, dark chocolate threatens to overwhelm

the palate but is beautifully balanced by a hoppy bitterness.

    Shorts Franken Pils 3:20

A brand new beer from Shorts. The brewery guys were really excited

to try this one out. An India Creme Ale (Pilsner/IPA combination.) Done

in the style of a traditional Creme Ale, where two different beers, and

typically different styles, are blended together. They took one of their

best IPAs, ControversiAle (fka Hangin Frank), and blended it with theirtraditional American Pilsner, creating a lightened body IPA with rich

malty avors alongside unique corn sweetness. Accentuated by earthy

American hop avors of citrus and pine. The nish should be pleasantly

bitter and maybe even a little dry. 5% ABV Tweet your opinions!

Craft Beer Drinkers of the World Unite!

Craft beer makes up only 5% of the beer consumed. In Michigan, only

3% of the beer consumed here is made in Michigan yet Michigan beer

    means Michigan jobs.

Craft beer drinkers want beer from brewers that put our money into

their beer, not Super Bowl ads. What craft beer drinkers have found is

that drinking real beer is a better value and yet a nice little luxury by

having beers that are based on traditional ingredients rather than the

    cheapest ingredients.

Craft beer drinkers know that beer is more approachable and pairs

better with food than any other adult beverage.

For those who say they dont like beer just means they havent found

their beer. With the craft beer movement we are re-discovering styles

of beers that used to exist but that the macro brewers drove out of the

market. Craft beer drinkers know that what existed 30 years ago whenonly three brewers controlled the market was the aberration and not the

norm. Even with now a thousand brewers in the US, we as a country

could triple the number of brewers and just be equal with countries like

Belgium in the number of brewers per population.

Ashleys has been supporting the craft beer effort for decades going

back to offering a tap handle to Bells in 1986 (in the bar trade taphandles are the key real estate and to give one to a new, small brewery

was unheard of). Larry Bell used to deliver his kegs personally in his

pick-up truck. But thats what it took back then. Same for many others

Ashleys has helped along the way Shorts, Arcadia,Wolverine, Avery

just to name a few. At this Festival youll get to see, and taste, many

of the new and upcoming breweries from here in Michigan as well as

    across the country.

Craft beer drinkers demand REAL beer and we want it now!
