21st Year Celebration StoriesThe initiative to set up Nectus as a fundraiser for the school came from Bow Thompson in the early 1990’s. Nectus was developed in 1992 as a fund raising business project making icypoles made from pure biodynamic fruit juice. The biodynamic juice was sourced from Greenwoods Orchard located in Merrigum in the Goulburn Valley. As well as making icypoles our children had many excursion up to the farm where they developed a better understanding of sustainable agriculture. As a sideline or secondary operation, the business retailed ice-creams in cones, sold at fairs, festivals and events. Volunteer labour was used.Bea Carr wrote in Reflections Magazine – Spring 2011

“The icy-poles were frozen organic fruit juice, delicious and refreshing in hot weather. Again, volunteers would go to Maldon, pour the juice into moulds, put them in the freezers and then wrap them. We sold these at some milk bars and any fundraising events we could. For a few years we would go to the Lavender Harvest at Lavendula. It was always incredibly hot (being January), and I remember taking the huge chest freezer, filled with icy-poles and selling them to lots of hot, thirsty people. By the end of the day, because we were constantly opening the freezer, the icy poles were

pretty mushy and melted, but people didn’t seem to mind because it was so hot. Our best customers were the Morris dancers who rushed over for icy poles whenever they finished. “

The factory was set up on a property in Maldon and was run by a group of dedicated volunteers. They ensured the business survived through its initial 7 years, particularly with the management and production aspects of the business.

Dagmar recalls there were some legal issues with calling them icypoles at the start so the name was changed to ‘icy fruit sticks’. Dagmar said she recalls fondly travelling with the trailer from market stall to other Steiner School fairs. She spoke about how “beautiful” all the volunteers looked with their hair nets & gloves in order to follow strict health regulations. Unfortunately after several years of hard work the time came when the volunteer’s interest waned and unfortunately caused the demise of the Nectus Iced Fruit Stand. However, for many years after the closure we continued to receive requests for icypoles.

Today you find the original Nectus Iced Fruit Factory stands proudly at the Castlemaine Steiner School. It is today known as the Cedar Room which houses Lyn Wallace with the Special Ed program.

With special thanks to Dagmar McNamara & Paula Cromwell in assisting with this article.

In memory of Sam Fairchild who passed away on the 8th of June, 2012.

Seeking Host FamiliesWe are again seeking host families to assist with providing accommodation for our new 2012-13 German volunteer worker: a young man from Berlin; Franz-Fabian.

Franz-Fabian will be arriving on the 8th of October, and needs short-term places to stay

with families from the school community. Franz-Fabian is 21 years old; sporty, musical, practical and very keen to experience Australian country life.

Families who have had a volunteer come to stay will tell you what a wonderful experience it is to share their home life with these mature and enthusiastic young men– often the volunteer quickly becomes like an extra family member. Some money is given to hosting families to cover costs.

If you might consider welcoming a volunteer into your home for a short or a long time over the next twelve months, please contact me via the school office or directly on my email: [email protected]. Likewise if you have previously hosted and would like to do so again please get in touch (I am taking over the role of volunteer coordinator from Lisa Minster, and I don’t know the names of many previous host families.)

Warm regards,

Jacob George

German Volunteer Coordinator

PLAYGROUP NEWSFor flowers that bloom about our feet, For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet, For song of bird and hum of bee, For all things fair we hear or see, Mother Earth, we thank thee. For blue of stream and blue of sky, For pleasant shade from branches high, For fragrant air and cooling breeze, For beauty from the blossoming trees, Mother Earth we thank thee. This week we celebrated our last week of Term Three with spring garlands and a lovely shared morning tea together. We have planted sunflower seeds and look forward to seeing them push through the soil by next term when we see each other again. Our nature story told of how Mr and Mrs Bird built their nest with the help of all the farm animals.Thank you everyone for another lovely term. CLASS ONEThe Class one playground is looking quite spectacular this week, some trees are in flower, others have brand new buds and leaves, bulbs are out and birds are cheerfully chirping and keeping busy with their spring dances. Parents and children have also been very busy mulching, pruning, building and planting! Thank you to all helpers during last weekend’s working bee, a wonderful day was had!

Danilo

CLASS TWOWhile we continue to practice our play, Class Two are re-visiting a few fables.

Please note the dates for our two performances: Thursday 11 October at 2.30 pm and Friday 12 October at 10am.

I had hoped to be ready by the end of term but have decided to hold off until the first week of Term 4.

Love Jacob.

CLASS THREEWe are working very hard on our play about Joshua and the battle of Jericho. Thank you so much for all of the boxes, they will make a wonderful wall! Our performance will take place on Wednesday 19th @ 2.30. We will also do a performance at 10:00 Wednesday morning for some of the younger classes. There will not be much room in our room, so I am asking for parents and family only on this occasion.

Love Anne.

CLASS 4 NEWSWhat can I say, we had a fantastic time at Kangaroobie. It was the best camp ever! We came back fully enriched but also tired. Now the animal projects are arriving and I am amazed at all the written work and the very imaginative models. Well done!

Please come to the classroom to have a look at Class 4 projects and while you are there take time to look at the photos about the camp and the drawings about the “obstacle course.”

Take care, Dagmar.

CLASS FIVE NEWSMore news when we return from our wonderful camp!

Warm wishes Lyn.

CLASS SEVEN NEWSA big thank you to Ellie for looking after my class for the past three weeks. Having been in a different environment the class 7 students in the dark, I in Shakespeare’s world – we renewed our connection. With only a week and a half left this term, we embarked on a journey into the world of the crusades. It will provide the background for our end of year play. Scripts will be handed out this week and the students will hear their parts so they can start learning lines over the holidays.

See you all next week.

Love Rob.

SPANISH NEWSiHola! ¿cómo estás?

The Spanish programme has been flowing very well into the school. We have experienced the Spanish culture by singing traditional songs and we have recited old Spanish Arabic verses and poems from “The Alhambra”. Traditional Spanish games have been played such as “canicas”, “pañuelo” o “Lata.”

I Gracias! I Hasta pronto!

SPRING FAIRAny questions regarding Spring Fair please send an email to:

[email protected] or ring Deb on 0414 814 993, Lisa 0488 102 191 or Nikki on 0407 715 557.

Every year Spring comes about and the Spring Fair duties form gets sent home, and every year they come flooding back with offers to work on the day, or even to let us know that families will be away and are wanting to contribute before fair day, it’s so heart warming to be reminded of what a wealth of enthusiasm there is amongst our school community.

Listed below are those people who have nominated to be on working groups for Spring Fair. These people

will do a little extra before the day to make these activities happen. Either Lisa, Nikki or Deb will be in contact to let you know when you will meet for the first time. If you know you nominated to be on a working group and your name does not appear please let us know. Unfortunately we had a computer meltdown whilst collating all the nomination forms and re-entering has not yet been completed.

This year there are some new people volunteering to step into new roles. Finally Alex Bonani will get a well-earned rest from the kitchen, with year 7 stepping up into the role supported by Lisa Hall, Nikki Vallentini, Louise Moysey and Lynne Bird. A standing ovation for Alex

for her great and much appreciated efforts over the last 3 years!

Well I think Felicity Lockwood has re-inspired the love of craft in our school community. Never before have we had such an overwhelming response to be on the craft working group. Kathryn Hall (0414 719 451) and Rose Demaria (5476 2643) are the co-ordinators of this group and they meet every Monday after assembly in the parents room. They will be helped along this year with the following people forming the working group, Anita Seuntjens, Michael Ryan, Peta Mawby and Sonia Stocco. You don’t have to be in the working group to join in the fun, or even take home a making kit (it can be collected from the office). You can join in on a casual basis and get some tips from those with experienced hands.

The communal craft project will be co-ordinated again by Kathryn Hall (0414 719 451) who will be joined in the working group by Melinda Rodnight and Karyn Maguire. I am sure we will have news from Kathryn and partners about this wonderful new project to Spring Fair.

Due to an overwhelming response from the dads in our school community Interactive Craft will be back again. Dave Woodgrove is the co-ordinator and he is very much looking for the next person to pass this activity on to. He will be joined by Tim Preston, Stephen Lumb, Brendan Sydes and Michael Robertson.

Children’s tent will be co-ordinated by Jane Dimsey (5472 3599) with Kate Dew, Kate McGann and Ali Woodgrove, joining in with the working group – it’s always fun to make something for the children’s tent and it’s well worth having a go. You can ring Jane or call into the office for a take home kit… be inspired we are always open to new ideas …

Silent Auction is the place to find a treasure on Spring Fair day - Anna Winneke and Lisa Thomas are joined this year by Josephine Clarke and Tanya Flavell. During the holidays clear out your sheds, this is a great place to donate loved treasures no longer wanted – really special oneoffs that somehow no longer have a place in your life. Maybe you have a business or perhaps work in a business that would like to donate to Spring Fair …Please contact either Anna or Lisa to find out more.

Our wonderful art and craft teacher Chris Curtis will be putting together

our beautiful Art and Craft display again and has produced yet another exquisite poster for us.

The college will also be holding short informative talks on the day of the fair as well!

Rumour is there is a class 8 student with a great idea (we will catch you very soon Sam)….

This year we have had no nominations for fishing dip, so for this year we will put our scissors and brown paper away. There will be plenty for little ones to do and maybe we will have some new surprises. We are hoping that class 7’s might be interested in a little bit of face painting on the day. Is there anybody out there who would like to be pocket lady for an hour during the day?

We are needing to borrow a large chest freezer – or maybe 2 smaller ones for the week leading up to the fair.

The dunking tank needs a new care taker someone with good mechanical skills prepared to learn to set up the tank. Leon is going to give the tank to the school and we would not want to lose this great tradition…. Any takers please call Deb 0414 814 993.

It wouldn’t be Spring Fair without the fabulous music … any parents or past students out there who would like to perform this year, we will celebrate 21 years of the school and wouldn’t it be magical to have some of the original parents and students come back to perform (do you know them ?) please contact Nikki 0407 715 557.

School Sun Spiral Are there any willing helpers to wash and sort pebbles into sizes either after morning drop off or before afternoon pickup? Anytime (even half an hour) that could be contributed would be wonderful. Just make sure to ring Vanessa Johnstone on 0401 183 052 to co-ordinate times.

What a clever idea!

Walk to School Day – October 2012This year walk to school will be a month-long activity. We want to encourage children and their parents to start walking to and from school on the first day of term four, and keep it up for each of the 18 school days in October.

Because of the distance from town a one day walk maybe more practicable.

Do we have a parent(s) who would like to co-ordinate this year’s event? If so please see the office – thanks.

Wanted – House to RentHi Everyone, We are a Steiner family of 3 looking for a house to rent in Castlemaine. We are wanting a 2 or 3 bedroom home with a small fenced yard for our quite teddy bear/dog. If there is space for our 3 chickens that would be wonderful but they have a back-up home if not. We are

happy for a 6 month or 12 month lease and would consider a shorter term house sit. We are looking for a place with lots of light, that would welcome a reliable and warm family. Non smokers. References available. Thank you!

Australian Fatherhood InitiativeTimothy O’Leary is the founder of the AFI and author of the Report. Tim works as a therapist, educator and consultant in Melbourne. He regularly consults around father-inclusive practice. Most recently Tim has been interviewing dads and writing up content for the upcoming ‘dads and pregnancy’ pages at the Raising Children’s Network’s website as well as working with the City of Melbourne’s Family Services to become a father-inclusive service.

The AFI has one modest aim: Combine some great research findings with the comments from Australian fathers to create the 2012 ‘Fathers Matter Report’. As a therapist and consultant I’ve collected a lot of great info about dads over the years. Now I wanted to put it all together in one report, spice it up with Australian Fathers comments and then put it out there as a free resource!

Choreocosmos WorkshopChoreocosmos was developed by Robert Powell, joining his training in Eurythmy with his passion for Astrosophy. Rudolf Steiner’s indications for the signs of the zodiac the planets, as well as their corresponding sounds, have been combined with music selected for its beauty, composed in the appropriate (major or minor) keys. The movement is performed in a circular fashion reflecting the apparent motion of the zodiac and planetary bodies. Anyone with a love of movement, reverence, Eurythmy or dance may find in Choreocosmos a spiritual impulse of great beauty.
