President’s Welcome

On behalf of the Feilding Surfcasting Club and the NZACA Executive, I would like to invite you all to the 2012 NZACA Okuma Nationals.

Hosted by Feilding, New Zealand’s friendliest small town, based at mighty Manfeild in the Manawatu, the 2012 Nationals will hopefully be one that all competitors and support crew will never forget. The 2012 Nationals boast boundaries and fish species that will provide a challenge and potentially great rewards for anglers of all ages and skill levels. The brave decision by the host club and NZACA Exec to have boundaries that minimize potential adverse effects of the weather for fishing, and hire dry casting facilities that are as good as anywhere in the country, should provide a good level playing field for all.

As with any voluntary event of this magnitude there have been many who have sacrificed endless hours to make this an enjoyable experience for all and I would like to personally thank them for this effort. The same must be said of our many great sponsors who have contributed so kindly. I would hope that all NZACA members will consider our sponsors when making their next purchasing decision.

Best of luck and I look forward to seeing you all in Feilding late March 2012.

Brent RolstonNZACA President & Event Organizer

A word from our Principal Sponsor

Following the outstanding success of last seasons “Baby” campaign which we briefly described to you in this bulletin last year, we are happy to say that the brand of Okuma reels and rods has again expanded and enjoyed awesome growth this past year, thanks to you out there who have supported us. It seems as though this campaign (Kiwis are born to fish) really touched a lot of people’s hearts, including the thieves around the place, as we lost way too many skins from our billboards. The police department commented that this type of theft hadn’t been reported for a long time so if you see them on your mate’s wall or in his garage give us a call as we would love to see where they ended up!!! This year will see the same theme run on a reduced scale and also incorporate more technical features of the reels etc, especially the new Andros 5-2 speed that just won “Best of Reel” at the EFTTEX show in Europe. We have just received our first shipment as the production facility has been hard pressed to keep up with the demand from the U.S.A and Europe. Another new addition this season will be the high speed Trio, TR80S, 6.2 to 1, dual drag and the unique graphite and aluminium crossover hybrid body, making this one of the lightest large capacity reels with game fish fighting abilities around. We have again put a lot of effort into New Zealand’s leading fishing catalogue and we have produced this with the consumer in mind, so if you want a copy feel free to drop into your local retailer and request one or simply write or give us a call here at C.D. Thanks again for allowing us to be a part of your active organisation and also for the support you all give us. Good luck out there this coming season and remember it’s also about fishing for tomorrow.

Wishing I was fishing, Marty Johanson. Managing Director.

Competition bag limit is total for both days.

Championship points are scored on the basis of the following formula:- One point, plus the fish weight in kilograms multiplied by the species factor (1+(weight * species factor)). No fish under 500g will qualify regardless of its length. Fish should be presented in a clean condition. Only the fish you intend to weigh should be brought to the weigh station. If you sort fish in front of the Weigh-master, you may be asked to go to the back of the line. All fish must be presented at the weigh-in at the designated time. Fish that are not eligible for points can be presented at the weigh-in for Record or Award purposes. These should be presented to the Weigh-master after competition fish have been weighed in. There will be no unwanted bait, fish or fish carcasses disposal facilities available at these National Championships. Competitors will need to make their own arrangements but are urged to consider principles of waste management and not by any action bring disrepute on the event or the Association. If, in the opinion of the organizing committee, competitors have breached the spirit of the competition, then the committee reserves the right to exclude the competitor(s). The committee’s decision will be final. Any failure to observe the stated fishing times will result in disqualification. All entrants, boat owners and spectators participate at their own risk. The organizers, promoters or any other party connected with the event accept no responsibility in any respect to personal injury, loss or damage to property regardless of the cause. In the Central Fisheries Management area, there is a combined maximum daily bag limited of 20 fin-fish, plus 10 snapper and a combined bag limit of 5 Hapuka/Bass and Kingfish with no more than 3 Kingfish.

Information on fishing spots within the boundary

South Beach (West Coast)

South Beach is about a 45 minute drive north-west from Feilding and stretches about 15kms between the Wanganui and the Whangaehu Rivers. A relatively easy beach to drive on (4wd is required at times), the beach is relatively flat and sandy towards the Wanganui end and little more steep towards the Whangaehu end. Access is via Airport Road just south of the Wanganui River bridge. Best fishing is around the change of light, this time of the day the tide doesn’t generally matter too much. Low tide to incoming can be very productive. The beach is full of channels and gutters, wading and long casts do offer more opportunities but big Snapper can be caught very close to shore with short casts in deep channels and holes. Best baits are Bonito, Pilchards, Fresh Kahawai, Small Crabs, Shellfish and live baits. Most likely catches are Kahawai, Snapper, Gurnard, with the odd Trevally and Kingfish. Any wind from west or south-west will make this a harder beach to fish. Northerly to easterly winds are ideal.

Wanganui Boat Fishing (West Coast)

Boats can be launched from Wharf Street Ramp, Wanganui, with plenty of parking between the Wanganui-Manawatu Sea Fishing Club and the Coast Guard Headquarters. Care must be taken crossing the Wanganui River Bar. Boat fishing offers many opportunities with both sand and reef available. Best baits are firm baits and ideally fresh Squid, Kahawai, Trevally all work great. Live baits will be taken by Kingfish and Big Snapper. Soft baits and jigs work well on all species. Species that can be caught off Wanganui are Snapper, Gurnard, Trevally, Blue Cod, Tarakihi, Kahawai, Kingfish and Grouper.

Santoft Beach (West Coast)

Santoft is the “Local” beach for the Feilding Surfcasting Club and covers from the northern side of the Rangitikei River up to Turakina, a distance of 16kms. Access is by Scotts Ferry and Turakina for 4wd vehicles and Fusilier Road through the Santoft Forest where you can walk over the sand dunes or take a 4wd motorbike. Santoft is all sand and if the sea conditions allow when the Nationals are on, there will be many Snapper up to 12kgs, a few Gurnard and Kahawai to be caught along its entire length.

Foxton Beach (West Coast)

Foxton Beach is about a 40 minute drive south from Feilding and stretches about 20kms between the Manawatu and the Rangitikei Rivers. An easy beach to drive on, sandy and flat. Best fishing from end of low through the incoming tide. Shallow along most of beach and requires some wading and long casts. Best baits are Salted Bonito and Pilchards. Most likely catches are Kahawai, Snapper, Sting Rays, Terakihi, and at night Gurnard. Any wind from north or south-west will make this a harder beach to fish.

For boat fishing: Boats can be launched from either the beach itself or from the Manawatu Boating Club ramp ($10 ramp fee). Care must be taken crossing the Manawatu River Bar. Similar baits used and fish catches to surfcasting.

Waitarere Beach (West Coast)

Waitarere Beach is between Levin and Foxton and is well sign posted off State Highway 1. An easy beach to drive at all but the highest of tides. Watch for worm holes at low tide. Beach extends approximately 6kms to the north and 5kms to the south. This is a shallow beach so wading is required. Best fished in calm conditions, at low tide and low light. Main fish caught is Kahawai with the odd Snapper if conditions allow. Small boats can be launched off the beach. Boat fishing is more productive than land based. Best baits are half pilchard with long cast.

16

Petone to Eastbourne side of the harbor

Extensive bays, rocky outcrops and easily accessible. Species to catch are Kahawai, Snapper, Gurnard, Tarakihi, Blue Cod, Rays and Congers. Bait to use is Pilchard, Skippy, Cray and Kahawai.

Fitzroy & Pencarrow Bays (P.C)

Walking and pushbike access only from Eastbourne Gate. There are other bays in this area, some can be rocky and full of weed but fishing can be exceptional. Species to catch are Moki, Trevally, Kahawai, Blue Cod, Tarakihi, Rays, Congers and Rig.

Wainuiomata Beach

Access at end of road. Open beach with weed and rocks at each end. Species to catch are Kahawai, Moki and Rig. Bait to use Pilchard, Skippy, Paddle Crab, Cray and Mussel.

Palliser Bay (South Coast)

Palliser Bay is made up of two main beaches; both are about 2 hours drive from Feilding. The first, on the eastern side of Lake Onoke is known as Lake Ferry, which is a pebble beach. Fish anywhere on this beach – good Kahawai can be caught here. The Feilding Surfcasting Club record for Trevally of 3.5kg came from here, and one of our club members won a local competition with a Snapper caught during daylight hours. Ocean Beach is on the other side of Lake Onoke and is also a pebble beach. Fishing anywhere here is good for Kahawai and Gurnard and a number of the Feilding Surfcasting Clubs’ Moki came from this area.

Southeast Wairarapa Beaches (beaches from Whangamona to Stone Wall Creek)

From Feilding to Whangamoana is approximately a 2 hour 15 minute drive. Between Whangamoana Beach and the Stone Wall Creek, there is 45kms of coast line, a mixture of sandy and stony beaches and rock outcrops. Most beaches and rocky outcrops are easily accessible by car, and other areas, a 4wd is recommended. There are no restrictions to beach access, camping or driving on beaches, except for some small parcels of Maori land, where camping is not permitted, but these are sign posted. From the beach, this area is very well known for it’s Moki, Kahawai and Blue Cod fishing, but one can expect anything from Kingfish through to the occasional Snapper, Terakihi, the odd Crayfish and very occasional Groper, Sea-run Salmon and even Albacore Tuna. Kayakers and boaties can expect to catch Blue Cod, Moki, Terakihi, Kingfish, Kahawai, Groper, Trumpeter, Albacore Tuna, Bluenose, Gurnard and occasional Snapper. Launching facilities are very limited to trailer boats, but kayakers basically have easy launching from the whole coast line. Because of the nature of this coastline, the weather can change rapidly, so a reliable and updated forecast is highly recommended before going to sea. A southerly swell will put a damper on beach fishing, but if a gale of northerly or northwester is forecast then generally even though uncomfortable on the beach, the sea should be ideal for beach fishing.

17

White Rock (East Coast)

White Rock is 2 ½ hours drive from Feilding, situated out from Martinborough. About three quarters of an hours drive is on a metal road. The beach is very isolated. There is a car park with a long drop toilet. You can climb onto rocks here and fish; I have not done this but have seen others do it. At the car park you can climb under a fence to fish on the northern side of White Rock. You don’t have to walk far for those that are not into walking. If you don’t stop at the car park, you can keep driving until the end of the road, southern end of White Rock, then drive down the track to the beach. The beach is very soft and would not advise driving on it. It can also get very windy if putting up a tent. The species of fish caught are Gurnard, Kahawai, Moki. Baits being used were Pillies, Mussel, and Bonito.

Castlepoint (East Coast)

From Feilding to Castlepoint is 176kms and will take approximately 2 ¼ hours via Masterton. When you get to Castlepoint, you will see the lighthouse which is on the reef. There is good fishing from the reef with a number of species to be caught. It is mostly sandy bottom but there is foul. Be Very Careful as there have been a lot of injuries and deaths at this reef. The most common species caught being Kahawai and Gurnard with the occasional Kingfish and Snapper. Travelling north from Whakataki to Mataikona there is a mixture of sandy beaches, rocky platforms and rocky jungles.

Herbertville (East Coast)

Two and a half hours drive from Feilding. An 8km long sandy beach with rocks at each end. Species caught: Snapper, Moki, Gurnard, big kahawai. Bait: Pillie, Bonito and mussel. Accommodation and meals are available at the motorcamp and pub/store. Very exposed to Southerly wind but clean water if sea conditions favourable.

Porangahau Beach (East Coast)

Porangahau Beach is approximately 50km from Waipukurau and around 2 hrs drive from Feilding. It has 16km of drivable beach and is known for big Kahawai and big Gurnard. The two biggest recorded landbased Gurnard caught on 6kg line in NZ were caught at Porangahau. A 1.56kg caught in 2002 by Phil Pearpoint and a 1.58kg caught a bit later in the same year by Gary Kemsley. Accommodation is available in the form of motels and campground. Best Baits: Fresh Mullet, Squid and Kahawai. Best winds are west or south-west.

An Australian team was also there. There was even an underwater section and a hand-line category, in addition to the normal boat, shore and rock fishing sections. The casting competitions were held at Napier hosted by the Pania Club with assistance from the Rotorua Fishing & Casting Club.
