Heavier finishing cattle outpace and return more dollars perhead than their lighter-weight counterparts regardless whethercorn is $4 or $7 per bushel. Cow-calf producers who want tosell their calves for top dollar should make sure the geneticsthey’re using have good growth and end-weight potential.

Five Rivers buys all shapes, sizes and colors, but their firstchoice is an Angus Continental crossbred that has a geneticmake-up of 50 - 75% Angus and 25 - 50% Continental.

This top son of Tomahawk is doing everything we expected from him.He calves easy and they just explode from then on. Not many Balancerbulls canmatch his EPD profile or spread from birth to yearling and stillmaintain an above average milk EPD. A genetic curve bender.

A superb calving ease bull that sires deep ribbed, easy fleshing cattle. His first crop of calves exemplifies his potency as a true breeding bull.

His sire descends from the noted Koupal Angus herd and was the topindexing bull of their entire crop.We were able to acquire this bull privately dueto him having foot rot as a calf. We took a chance and he has remained soundto this day. His sons and daughters are high performing cattle.

Lee LeachmanLee Leachman of Leachman Cattle of Colorado (LCoC)has utilized Gelbvieh genetics in their program for overthirty years. Gelbvieh cattle excel on the maternal side, when LCoC measure profitability at weaning, Gelbviehcattle win: more pounds weaned per cow exposed thanany other breed. LCoC use for their Continental breeds,Simmental, Charolais and Gelbvieh. Lee says that todayyou have three tools to improve your herd. 1. Additivegenetic merit 2. Hybrid vigor and 3. Breed differences.Like it or not, these are your only tools. Hybrid vigor canadd $75 per cow per year to your productivity andbreed differences can be used to quickly improve traitslike yield grand and carcass weight which can add an-other $50 per herd.
