Dear Fellow Cattle Producers: Welcome to this years edition of the “Cowman’s Kind” bull and female sale. Top genetics and top management practices are being rewarded today more than ever. The benefits of heterosis and increased pay weights from cross breeding are again being realized by producers. With the herd expansion that’s soon going to take place, what better time to add or increase the use of Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics to your herd. The Meat Animal Research Center documents the Gelbvieh cow as the most ef-ficient cow in the industry from a pounds of weaned calf per cow exposed and the most economical cow size stand point. Thus it stands to reason that commercial producers with Gelbvieh influenced females will benefit like never before and have the most sought after replacement females in the industry.

This years’ sale offering is really strong. The cows selling truly represent over 25 years of relentless culling and selection pres-sure. The bulls are a tremendous group, and are loaded from top to bottom in both the Purebred and Balancer group. There are several new sire groups to choose from this year and some of our most proven genetics sell in volume sire groups. Nearly 600 cows and many AI and ET matings are involved in producing the bulls selling and they reflect that level of culling and com-mitment. You’ll notice more ET produced bulls than ever before and we have chosen this route to increase our bull numbers slightly rather than lower our standards at the other end. We are proud of each and every bull selling, and all are expected to have a positive impact on their new owners’ program.

We’re proud of our commitment to customer service and guarantees that have been in place for many years. As in the past, we offer a first breeding season guarantee, breeding soundness exams, homozygous black, homozygous polled, sight-unseen purchase guarantees, as well as free bull care of free delivery. These are covered in our Terms and Conditions page. Again this year, we offer the Igenity DNA test and the PI negative test on every bull selling. We’re willing to assist Post Rock customers utilizing the American Gelbvieh Association commercial marketing program with replacement female lists, the Gelbvieh feeding fax, the Gelbvieh alliance and the new Smart Tag program. We’re charter members of the Gelbvieh Profit Partners and would be privileged to contact them about bidding on your Gelbvieh and Balancer sired calf crop. if there is anything we can do to help increase your profitability, lets us know, as our survival in the seed stock business is based on your profitability and patronage.

As in the past, we have bulls from our cooperator herds: Meadowlark Gelbvieh, Dawson Creek Gelbvieh, Biggs Brothers, Twin Oak Gelbvieh, and Stucky Gelbvieh. The addition of cooperative herds has allowed us to increase selection pressure placed on bulls as well as offer more bulls. TermsThe terms of the sale are cash. Animals are to be paid for during or imme-diately following the sale. Each animal will be sold to the highest bidder.We have made every effort to provide as complete and accurate informa-tion as possible. However, announcements from the auction stand will take precedence over information printed in the catalog.

BiddingAny disputes or challenges regarding bids shall be settled by the auction-eer, and his decision shall be final. Mail or telephone bids will be handled with strictest of confidence.

Semen Check & GuaranteeEach bull is guaranteed to settle healthy, fertile females and has been semen tested. Should any bull be claimed a non-breeder, the recommen-dation of the American Gelbvieh Association will apply. However, this does not preclude us from making adjustments that are mutually beneficial to both parties.

First Breeding Season Guarantee• If any bull purchased in the Cowman’s Kind Sale or privately from

Post Rock dies or is disabled during the first 90 days following first turn out of a young bull, the following guarantee will apply.

• If your young bull is temporarily unable to complete the breeding season, if possible, Post Rock will provide you with a loaner bull without cost to you other than transportation of the bull from and back to Post Rock.

• If your bull becomes permanently disabled, Post Rock will allow full credit ($3500 Maximum) toward the purchase of one bull in the next Post Rock sale. Post Rock will receive the salvage value of the injured bull. Should the bull you purchase cost more than your credit you pay the difference. If he costs less, no further credit is due you.

• The above warranty is for bulls used in a single sire breeding pasture. If two or more bulls are used in a breeding pasture the warrant is reduced to 50% of the initial purchase cost.

• If your bull dies within the first 90 days Post Rock will credit you with 50% of the purchase price and provide a loaner bull if available at no cost.

• If you have a problem, please notify us as soon as possible since we try to keep a few bulls available in case your new Post Rock bull is disabled during the first breeding season.

LiabilityAll persons attending the Cowman’s Kind Sale do so at their own risk. The sale sponsors, sale manager and/or any other seller assumes no liability for accidents, theft or damages done during this even on site of Post Rock Cattle Company.

Female LotsPlease make arrangements to pickup all female lots within one week of the sale date.

BULL Free Delivery or Free Care Until May 1You may select your choice of the following delivery options for your bull purchases:

• Option 1-Haul your bull sale day and we will deduct $75 per bull. We will assist you in loading out immediately following the sale.

• Option 2-We will care for your bulls free of charge but at the pur-chaser’s risk and you pick them up any time prior to May 1. Bulls remaining at Post Rock after May 1 will be charged $2.50 per head per day.

• Option 3-We will deliver bulls free of charge up to 300 miles with additional miles prorated per head and that cost will not exceed $250 per lot. Purchases totaling $20,000 or more will be delivered free of charge to an individual ranch or to a central location within your state on group purchases. For animals that we deliver you are encouraged purchase individual animal insurance that will be available sale day at the rate of 4% of the purchase price for 6 months coverage. Other rates apply for longer or shorter insured periods. Inquire at the clerks table.

Registration CertificatesRegistration certificates will be transferred on all sale lots at the seller’s expense, except for those marked as unregistered or announced other-wise.

Sight Unseen PurchasesIf you are unable to attend the sale, a bull can be purchased for you on order during the auction. Please call either Bill or Leland in advance of the sale and discuss with us the price range and the type of bull you are look-ing for, and we will recommend the bull or bulls that will fit your needs. If you don’t like the bull when he is delivered to your place, he’s not yours; and the money paid will be refunded. If the bull can be purchased for less than your maximum bid, you get the bull for the amount he left the ring at, just as if you were bidding for yourself. Each year, breeders take advantage of this free service. Call if you would like more information or a reference. For sight unseen satisfaction guarantees, you must purchase an animal that either Bill or Leland have previously recommended to fit your needs.

Mortality InsuranceInsurance will be available on sale day at the rate of 4% of the purchase price for 6 months coverage. Other rates apply for longer or shorter insured periods. Inquire at the clerks’ table.

Trich TestingMany states have new rules for trich testing and none of the sale bulls have been tested. Should a Trich Test be required Post Rock will pay costs involved and complete the testing requirements soon following the sale.

TELE-AUCTION AVAILABLEPost Rock is located in a very poor cell phone reception area and we encourage you to utilize this service. If you will be unable to attend the sale, you can do your own bidding via a conference telephone hook up that will connect you to ringside for the sale. You will be able to listen to the sale in progress, talk directly to our ringside representative and bid. Buyers interested in the option should call Bill prior to sale day at 785-792-6244. You will be given the phone number and pass code to join the tele-auction and assigned a bidder number with which to do your bidding. Your only cost will be your normal long distance charges, charged by your long distance carrier. This would work well if you have looked at the sale offering prior to sale day and for sight unseen purchases.

After much thought, research and discussion we have decided to discontinue collecting ultrasound data on our sale bulls and instead have switched to

‘Igenity DNA’ testing (see chart below). Ultrasound was an important place to start in selection for carcass traits. However the concerns of using raw data in sire selection, testosterone effects on marbling, the wide variations of ultrasound data on flush brothers and the rapidly improving DNA markers reliability have lead us to the conclusion that we should discontinue that information on sale bulls. We will continue to ultrasound our replacement heifers for our own sire information as well as helping to strengthen the American Gelbvieh Association data base in the carcass evaluations. We didn’t make this decision lightly as we do have several commercial customers who are ultra sounding and selecting replacement heifers with ultrasound data. And we certainly encourage them to continue to do that on their replacement heifers. Ultrasound is a great tool to identify sire lines but not necessarily individuals with superior carcass genetics. Our opinion and research tells us the problem is 2 fold in using it to select bulls. 1st—bulls developed like ours on high roughage rations are not fed a hot enough ration to allow all bulls

to express their genetic abilities to marble. 2nd --- and probably most important is that bulls that reach sexual puberty early and have large scrotal circumference almost always have much lower marbling scores because testosterone and lots of it inhibit marbling from being laid down. By continuing to use this technology on our heifers we can eliminate the testosterone variables while still being able to identify our superior sire lines. While the DNA markers don’t lie the DNA markers also have their limitations at this time because not all the DNA markers for traits like marbling have been located, identified and proven. This technology like all technology is changing and improving rapidly and in our opinion is now to the point some selec-tion pressure can be used with this data. This summer I heard the analogy of the way to use the DNA markers was to compare it to planting a shelterbelt to protect your cows from a winter storm. The 1st couple of years it does little or no good for your herd. 4 or 5 years into your shelterbelt it provides some protection and after 10 years your mature shelterbelt is an invaluable asset to your operation. Just like your tree shelterbelt, the best time to plant your “genetic shelterbelt” is as soon as possible.

How to use the IGENITY® ProfileIGENITY® Scores are easy to incorporate into your selection criteria. If you are a commercial cattleman, you may want to focus on just the QualityGrade, Yield Grade and Tenderness scores and identify those animals that best represent the future direction of your operation. If you are a seedstock producer, the profile scores for Ribeye Area, Carcass Weight, Fat Thickness and Marbling are available to allow the opportunity to micro-manage and meet your optimum goals.

Profile Score AdvantagesTo assist beef cattle breeders and commercial ranchers in understanding the value of the DNA information, IGENITY® incorporated a scoring system for each trait using a scale of 1 to 10. Higher values are not necessarily better – it indicates the animal has the potential for more of that trait.

TENDERNESS: T The IGENITY® profile score for Tenderness represents an animal’s genetic potential for tenderness as measured by Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF), with “10” the most tender and “1” the least tender. Lower shear force means more tender beef. This means higher IGENITY® profile scores represent animals that are more tender than those with lower scores.MARBLING SCORE: M Higher IGENITY® scores for marbling equal greater genetic potential for marbling.PERCENT CHOICE: %CH Higher IGENITY® scores for percent choice represents a greater potential for choice.YIELD GRADE: YG Higher IGENITY® Yield Grade scores equal a genetic potential for a higher USDA Yield Grade. FD is doing an exceptional job in our program. We flushed his dam, an AGA Dam of Merit who produced 5 natural purebred bulls with a 96BW 107WW 116 Marbling ratios and all sold as purebred herd sires for over a $4000 average. She is now at C Cross in North Carolina. His grandam, also an AGA Dam of Merit, produced sons with a 114 marbling ratio. This mating was designed to capture the best ultrasound data we have produced and mated her with the carcass legend Future Direction in the Angus breed. What we got was an ultra calving ease herd sire that still has muscle and eye appeal from a great cow family. Flush sister won her class at the Missouri Junior National. Tested AM and NH free.

Chunky was purchased from long time breed Doug Pauley at the Midwest bull sale. His sire group sold for over a $3000 average last year including a standout herd sire to Mathews Farms in Tennessee. Quality Focus was purchased as the high selling Angus bull in the 2008 Knoll Crest Sale in Virginia as the high ratio, high ultra sounding Angus bull sired by Mytty In Focus and out of a 1407 X Reliant bred cow, he has proven to breed to his exceptional EPD’s posting a 95 BW ratio 103 WW ratio in our herd which is better than his sire, Mytty In Focus in our program. Great Western sire the 2008 National Champion Balancer® bull and 2008 Reserve National Champion female and followed that up by siring the 2009 Champion and Reserve Balancer® female and the Reserve Purebred female in the Jr. Show in Denver. Great Western was added to our program after seeing his first sire group sell in the Eby Ranch bull sale. They consis-tently had more depth, muscle mass and eye appeal than any sire group I’ve seen. Star Power was retained to use in our program to inject the maternal excellence of his dam and the muscle and growth of his sire deep into our genetic base. He has proven to be a sire of very acceptable birth weights with tremendous growth. His early AGA Progeny report has 102 BW 106 WW ratio’s. His sons have performed well on test and several are outstanding individuals as well with the extra muscle and eye appeal of their sire. We expect his daughters to be some of our very best. His calves have proven to us that he needs to be used very heavily the next few years. Star Power was Reserve Sr Bull Calf Champion and a year later was Sr Bull Champion in Denver as his only 2 shows.
