2012 ROSTER

The Western Athletic Conference features some of the most exciting competition at some of the most diverse campuses in the na-tion. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s largest and most accessible media markets. In addition, the academic reputation of many of the WAC schools is unparalleled, with some of the nation’s most respected institutions of higher learning among the WAC ranks.

This season marks the 50th for the WAC, making it the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. While the WAC has a lengthy history, gymnastics enters its sixth year in the conference this season. The lineup of teams is comprised of WAC members San Jose State and Utah State and affiliate members Denver, Sacramento State and Southern Utah.

The WAC began operation with the 1962-63 academic year with 10 sports. The first championship was held in November of 1962 when Arizona won the cross country title. Arizona State claimed the league’s first national title after winning the College World Series in 1965. Fresno State won the last title in 2008 at the College World Series.

Presently, the WAC crowns champions in 19 sports — eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball.

Sacramento State trains at Technique Gymnastics located near campus in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Hornets have the luxury of practicing in the 38,000-square foot facility which is one of the largest and best equipped gymnastics training centers in the West. The enormous facility allows Sacramento State gymnasts to train throughout their practice session with-out having to compete for time on the equipment.

Technique features three full-sized floors, a tumble track, three vault runways and tables, eight competition beams and four sets of bars. In addition, it also has over 17,000 square feet of foam pits for added safety.

On campus, the team is able to condition in the Eli and Edythe Broad Fieldhouse located on the south end of campus. Under the watch of Strength and Conditioning Director Jared Nessland and assistant Tom DiStasio, the Hornets perform their workouts in a state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room.

Why Sacramento State?The Team

Being a part of the team is more than just practices and meets. Their close-knit relation-ship is evident throughout the year as the team spends most of its non-gymnastics time together, performing community service, attending other sporting events and celebrat-ing holidays and birthdays. One of the yearly highlights is the team’s preseason trip. This past fall, the Hornets traveled to the Calavares Big Trees for a weekend of hiking, games and bonding.

“I always felt everyone had my back, especially the coaches and my team. When I’d get knocked down, I had 20 hands helping me back up. With the support, it helped me become a better athlete and person.” - Nicole Giao, ‘08

The CoachesThe 2012 season marks the 27th year that head coach Kim Hughes and assistant coach Randy Solorio have worked together on the coaching staff. The pair have el-evated Sacramento State from the AIAW to Div. II and eventually Div. I. The Hornets have enjoyed unprecedented success in their tenure. Hughes is beginning his 31st season as the head coach and his 35th with the program, while Solorio is entering his 27th season. Former Hornet Jamie Donkin is in her ninth year as a member of the staff.

“I decided to come to Sacramento State because of the coaching staff. When you get here, they become more than just coaches to you.” - Amanda Bieber, ‘11

The SuccessAfter high-level national success at the Div. II level, Sacramento State made the jump to Div. I in 1992. Sacramento State broke through with its first NCAA regional appear-ance in 1999. From that point, the Hornets have been a force in the West, claiming seven conference championships and being represented at the NCAA Regionals every year.

“Being a part of a winning team is something that I will never forget. There’s some-thing special knowing that you were able to carry on the tradition. I still get chills thinking about it.” - Melissa Genovese, ‘08

The SupportPart of the team’s success has been a dominating record at home which is aided by a great crowd. Despite the cozy confines of the Hornets Nest, Sacramento State has one of the best gymnastic environments in the WAC. In the spring of 2009, an over-flow crowd was on hand for the WAC Championships and helped push the team to a second-place showing. Outside of competition, the team is aided by a medical staff which features athletic trainers, doctors and surgeons. Hornet gymnasts also have the availability of academic advisors and tutors to help them stay on course to graduate and succeed in the classroom.

SEASON OUTLOOK The graduation of five seniors might leave some Div. I gymnastics programs scrambling to rebuild. For Sacramento State, the Hornet coaching staff feel that not only will the squad be able to absorb the loss of those five, the team should be able to improve from a 2011 season which saw the Hornets finish fourth in the Western Athletic Conference. “Overall, we have a lot of competitive expe-rience on this team,” Sacramento State head coach Kim Hughes said. “Our goal is to con-sistently be more competitive. If that happens, I think this could be a turnaround year.” Helping lead the charge will be a group of 11 returners, including NCAA regional quali-fiers Kailey Hansen and Nicole Meiller, as well as 2010 WAC beam champion and NCAA qualifier Cayla Beutler (formerly Boyce). Beutler and Meiller will also serve as team captains in 2012. The honor will mark the sec-ond consecutive season for Beutler who missed all of 2011 after undergoing surgery on her shoulder. “This team seems very dedicated to its train-

ing,” Hughes said. “The captains did a lot to make sure everyone was ready when practice began and it has shown in the gym.” While the veterans are providing the leader-ship, a talented group of freshmen might be the factor to elevate Sacramento State back into title contention. The incoming class consists of Kalliah Mc-Cartney, Tina Necas, Dallas Smith, Claire Torgerson and Cayla Wonderly. All five mem-bers are expected to compete immediately with McCartney serving as a legitimate all-around candidate during her collegiate debut. Beutler and Hansen are the other all-around candidates. Beutler competed in seven all-arounds as a freshman but is still working to return on vault due to her injuries. Since the reformation of the WAC in 2006, Sacramento State has been a major factor in the conference. The team won the conference title in 2006 and 2007 and finished second in 2009. This year, the WAC will have a new look as long-time members Boise State and Cal State

Fullerton (dropped program) have left the con-ference. However, the league will add nation-al-power Denver into the fold this year, keep-ing the WAC as one of the top conferences in the nation. “Replacing Boise (State) with DU was a good choice for the league,” Hughes said. “All five teams are very competitive which should make for a tough championship meet.” Also new to the schedule this season is the creation of a Northern California meet which will be hosted by Stanford in 2012. The meet features the Hornets, UC Davis, San Jose State and Stanford. “This is something that has been in the con-servation for a while but finally happened,” Hughes said. “We are hoping to add Cal in the future and the meet will rotate on an annual basis.” Sacramento State will also have meets against Central Michigan and Oregon State — two teams that qualified for the NCAA post season a year ago.

SEASON OUTLOOK

VAULT Sacramento State continues to make big strides on vault, with five returners from last season as well as high expectations from a newcomer in 2012. The team improved its RQS last year and will boast at least four 10.0 vaults in the lineup this season. “I’m excited to have this many 10.0 vaults,” Hughes said. “This could be one of the best vault lineups we’ve ever had here. It’s also fun because of the variety, not everyone is doing the same thing.” The trio of junior Nicole Meiller, sophomore Kailey Hansen and freshman Kalliah McCart-ney are regarded as locks for the lineup when the season begins. Meiller qualified for the NCAA West Re-gional as a freshman. That same season she scored a career high 9.825 at the WAC Cham-pionships. In 2011, she was slowed by injury at the start of the year but returned at the end of the season to finish with four vaults of at least 9.700.

Hansen led the team last season with an average of 9.673. She had seven vaults of at least 9.700, including a 9.775 at the Lady Luck Invitational in Las Vegas. McCartney performs a pike front with a half — the same vault that former Hornet Nirvana Zaher used to win three conference titles. Senior Emiko Ono (above), junior Cayla Beutler and sophomore Katie Osaki and Mad-die Montoya will contend for the final three spots in the lineup. Osaki (11 meets) and Montoya (eight) saw the most action on vault among the group last season. Osaki averaged 9.616 and had a high of 9.825 against UC Davis and Boise State. Ono has been a spot starter for the last two seasons, including appearing in nine meets in 2010. Because of her shoulder injury, Beutler has not competed on vault since her freshman sea-son in 2009.

BARS If Sacramento State is going to return to the upper echelon of the Western Athletic Confer-ence, the team will need to improve its bars scores from a year ago. A few tweaks to the re-turners routines and the addition of a talented freshman should get the team back in the title hunt. “We’re looking to improve,” Hughes said. “Each of the returners are better and Kalliah will help the team immediately.” The returners are headlined by junior Nicole Meiller (above). In an injury-plagued 2011, Meiller still managed to score 9.775 or better in four of her seven routines, including a pair of 9.800s. “We eliminated a lot of extra circles from Nicole’s routine,” Hughes said. “It is short but full of difficulty with great combo bonus and skills.” One of the remaining skills in Meiller’s rou-tine is her triple twisting flyaway dismount — a skill rarely attempted at the collegiate level. Senior Emiko Ono, who competed in all 11 meets last season, has added an E level dis-

mount to her routine. Ono set a career high last season with a 9.750 during the team’s vic-tory at California. McCartney is penciled to make the starting lineup with a routine Hughes describes as “ex-tra clean.” Sophomore Kaila Kilwein, who like Ono, competed in every meet a year ago, will also retain a spot in the lineup to start the year. As a freshman, Kilwein had a high of 9.725 and was consistent at the top of the order. Cayla Beutler added a giant hop full to her routine and is looking to regain her spot in the lineup. The final spot should be a battle between sophomores Katie Osaki and Ashley Wooff as well as freshman Tina Necas. Wooff cracked the lineup in one meet as a true freshman and also had three exhibitions. Necas comes to the team from Brown’s Gymnastics in Las Vegas.

SEASON OUTLOOK

BEAM It has taken just five years for Sacramento State to completely replace its top 10 beam scores in school history. During that stretch, the team has six scores of at least 49.000 to be-come one of the best beam squads in the West. The Hornets are poised to add to that list in 2011 with a deep lineup which features three returning starters, including a former WAC in-dividual champion. The knowns in the Hornet order will consist of junior Cayla Beutler (above), sophomre Mary Peck, sophomores Kailey Hansen and Elideth Guerrero and freshman Kalliah Mc-Cartney. Beutler finished first at the WAC Champion-ships in 2010 with a score of 9.875. During that season, she finished first in six of her 12 meets and had five scores of at least 9.800. “It’s great to have Cayla back,” Hughes commented. “She’s back in form (from 2010) and has upgraded her leap and dismount which will only make her better.” A regular in the lineup last year, Peck com-peted in nine meets. Her best score of the sea-

son came at home against Boise State and UC Davis where she scored 9.775. With Beutler redshirting last season, Hansen and Guerrero were thrust into the spotlight as freshmen. The pair were in the lineup for all 11 meets and combined for five scores of 9.700 or higher. Guerrero’s best effort came in front of her hometown friends and family where she fin-ished first at Cal State Fullerton with a career high 9.800. The Orange, Calif., native fea-tures a flick-lay-lay series in her routine which is the first performed by a Hornet in school his-tory. Hansen has adjusted her routine for 2012 to include her acro series with her dismount. McCartney is a two time regional all-around champion who has shined on the beam with a routine which includes a series with a pair of aerial walkovers with a flip-flop. According to coaches, the final spot in the lineup will be competed for by sophomore Kai-la Kilwein or freshmen Claire Torgerson, Kayla Wonderly, Dallas Smith and Tina Necas.

FLOOR In her first season with the Hornets, Kailey Hansen (above) established herself as a force to be reckoned with on floor. The Ventura, Ca-lif., native finished first on the event in three meets and went on to place fifth at the NCAA West Regional. During the year, Hansen scored 9.875 in four different meets, including the regional and had 10 scores of at least 9.700. “Kailey has added new music and choreog-raphy which showcases her abilities as a per-former,” Hughes said. “She also changed her opening tumbling pass to a whip double pike. Expected to join Hansen in the back half of starting lineup are junior Cayla Beutler and freshman Kalliah McCartney. Beutler competed in all 11 meets in 2010 where she averaged 9.711. During that season, she scored 9.825 in two meets to set her career high. “Cayla has unique dance moves and is very clean,” Hughes said. “Kalliah is a strong per-former with a very intricate routine.” Returning to the lineup are sophomores Ka-tie Osaki and Kaila Kilwein. Osaki competed

in all 11 meets on floor as a true freshman, averaging 9.673. She peaked at the end of the year, scoring at least 9.700 in four of the final five regular season meets with a best of 9.850. Kilwein provided a steady score near the top of the order in her first season with the Green & Gold. She averaged 9.618 with a high of 9.750 coming in the team’s win at California. Like beam, the sixth spot in the lineup is wide open heading into the year. Expected to con-tend for the job is senior Stephanie Toubman, sophomores Elideth Guerrero and Maddie Montoya, and freshmen Tina Necas, Claire Torgerson and Dallas Smith. Toubman’s career has been plagued by a series of injuries which has limited her to just three exhibitions in three seasons. When healthy, she possesses explosive tumbling. Guerrero was kept off floor as a freshman due to an ankle injury while Montoya com-peted in two meets. Among the freshmen, Necas was fourth at the Junior Olympics NIT and Smith was a Level 10 regional champion.

KIM HUGHESHead Coach | 31st Year | Chico State, ‘76

With 35 years years of coaching experience at Sacramento State, Kim Hughes is synonomous with Hornet gymnastics. The veteran coach is entering his 31st season leading the program and has developed the Hornets from the Div. II ranks to create a highly-competitive team which routinely competes for a bid to the NCAA Div. I postseason. Sacramento State’s success has not been limited to making NCAA Regional appearances. The team has won seven confer-ence titles since 2000, including a pair of Western Athletic Conference crowns. The streak began with back-to-back Western Independent Conference titles in 2000 and 2001 and then two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships (2002-03). After a second-place finish in 2004, the Hornets reclaimed the MPSF crown with a convincing two-point victory in 2005. Sacramento State was then invited to join the WAC, and despite tougher competition, the team captured the first two titles in the league winning at Utah State in 2006 and at Southern Utah in 2007. Following the Hornets’ first championship, Hughes was named the West Region and WAC Coach of the Year. The following year, the Hornets missed their third consecutive WAC title but still managed to qualify for the NCAA Region-als for the third season in a row. In 2009, the team hosted the WAC meet for the first time in school history and responded with a second-place finish. Individually, the Hornets have advanced 33 gymnasts to the NCAA Regionals since 1994. That list includes three in 2010, 2009 and 2005, and four in 2004. Hughes also coached Terri Meyer to the NCAA Div. II beam title in 1984, Rebecca Seebirt to three USAG vault titles (1994, 1995, 1997), Natalie Cadondon to the USAG all-around title in 1995 and Toni Petersen to the 2000 floor crown in the NIT. In addition, the Hornets have earned 40 All-America honors during his tenure. In the classroom, the gymnastics team has also flourished under Hughes. In the spring of 2011, the squad had a 3.34 team GPA. That total included 12 student-athletes who were above a 3.0 and nine who posted better than a 3.5. His knowledge of the sport, coupled with his enthusiasm for teaching, has presented numerous opportunities for Hughes to coach at varying levels of competition. A 1976 graduate of Chico State with a B.A. in physical education, Hughes competed collegiately for the Wildcats after a successful high school gymnastics career. He was the Northern California high school still rings champion as a senior in 1971. He joined the Hornet staff as an assistant to the women’s gymnastics program in 1978 and was named head coach in 1982. During his collegiate coaching career, Hughes served as a member of the Western Regional Committee while acting as the Western Regional meet director in 1987. When the Hornets were a member of the Northern California Athletic Conference, Hughes served as commissioner of gymnastics from 1982-84 and was named conference coach of the year in 1984. With Sacramento State’s move to Div. I in 1991-92 and the NCAA’s decision to drop a Div. II championship, Hughes worked to provide postseason competition opportunities for smaller collegiate gymnastics programs. He has twice served as Western Region chairperson for the USAG where he was involved with developing the USAG collegiate championship into a viable national competition open to men’s and women’s varsity and club programs which qualify in a format similar to the NCAA selection. An active community leader, Hughes is involved with the United Way, serving as the athletics department representative on the campus committee for seven years. He was a co-sponsor of the Special Olympics gymnastics competition held at Sacramento State from 1985-87. He also has been the athletics department’s union representative since 1993. In the spring of 2007, Hughes earned the Distinguished Faculty Award at Sacramento State. That award is presented to just one faculty member each year and requires a nomination from a peer. Hughes rounds out his coaching resumé with various club appointments, including nearly 20 years with the Nor-Cal Gymnastics Camp in Santa Cruz, Calif. He has also worked for the River City Gymnastics Club in Sacramento as well as the Chico and El Dorado Hills Gymnastics Clubs. Hughes holds a master’s degree in physical education from Sacramento State. He and his wife, Darla, have two sons, 27-year-old Jonathan and 25-year old Jordan.

RESIDENCE HALLSSacramento State utilizes six residence hall complexes to house students. American River Courtyard, the newest - completed in 2009, houses upperclassmen in apartment style dorms while Sutter Hall, Sierra Hall, Draper Hall, Jenkins Hall and Desmond Hall feature traditional style dorms for freshmen.

All of the residence halls are located on the north edge of campus along the American River, with three buildings on each side of the dining commons.

Living on campus can have a significant impact on academic success and personal growth. The Residence Halls are not only comfortable and convenient, but they also offer

ample opportunities to make new and lasting friendships and to be involved with floor, hall, and campus-wide activities.

Residence halls are staffed by live-in professionals and trained student Resident Advisors.

Staff help organize a variety of programs and social activities, and serve as a source of campus information.

ADMINISTRATIONUNIVERSITY PRESIDENTDr. Alexander Gonzalez

ATHLETICS DIRECTORDr. Terry Wanless

Dr. Alexander Gonzalez has served more than three decades as a professor and education leader, including serving as president of California State University, Sacramento, since 2003. As the first person in his family to graduate

from college, Dr. Gonzalez has devoted his career to ensuring greater opportunities for students. Dr. Gonzalez enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 17, served four years and then used the G.I. Bill to graduate from Pomona College. He graduated with honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned a master’s degree in psychology and doctorate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, before serving as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University. His experience includes six years as president of California State University, San Marcos, and 18 years at Fresno State, where he was the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs. His commitment to the California State University system includes serving on a work group that reviewed and recommended corrective action on remedial education, and, more recently, as a member of a committee of presidents considering policy on enrollment management, the CSU’s Technology Steering Committee, and the Institute for Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Gonzalez is Sacramento State’s 11th president.

Dr. Terry Wanless’ nine-year tenure as Sacramento State’s Director of Athletics has seen growth unparalleled in the school’s 20-year Division I history. His vision of broad success in the department has come to fruition over the last five years as the Hornets have combined to win 34

conference championships. That includes an unprecedented eight conference titles during the 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2010-11 academic years. In addition, the program claimed the 2010-11 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Points Title.

This past year, the program finished 119th out of 345 schools in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the highest ranked team in the Big Sky Conference. The 2008-09 West Region Athletic Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision, Wanless has overseen significant facility enhancement to the athletic facilities. The biggest change came during the spring of 2008 with the opening of the Broad Fieldhouse, which serves as the home to Hornets football and track and field, as well as athletic training and strength and conditioning.

Wanless has served on numerous NCAA committees, and recently completed a term as a member of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision selection committee.

The Student-Athlete Resource Center was created in March 2006 in an effort to combine three very important Student Affairs’ programs that provide valuable services to Hornet student-athletes, coaches, and staff.

The programs of Athletic Academic Services, Life Skills and Student-Athlete Development, and NCAA Compliance and Financial Services combine to provide student-athletes with the support to develop as independent and successful

young adults and the skills to achieve their academic goals, to persist towards graduation, and to meet all NCAA eligibility requirements.

The SARC staff helps student-athletes navigate through many of the campus’ academic procedures and policies, understand NCAA rules compliance and eligibility requirements, and provide services that place student welfare and the development of the whole student as a top priority.

Page 65: 2012 Sacramento State Gymnastics Guide

The Sports Medicine Team at Sacramento State provides quality health care to all intercollegiate student-athletes. This is done through the following domains: risk management and injury prevention, pathology of injuries and illnesses, assessment and evaluation, acute care of injury and illness, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise, general medical conditions and disabilities, nutritional aspects of injury and illness and psychosocial intervention and referral.

We intend to fulfill our purpose by:

• Creating a comfortable and caring environment within the athletic training facility.

THE CAPITOL BUILDINGThe California State Capitol is home to the government of California. The building houses the bicameral state legislature and the office of the governor.

The Neoclassical structure was completed between 1861 and 1874 at the west end of Capitol Park, which is framed by L Street to the north, N Street to the south, 10th Street to the west, and 15th Street to the east. The Capitol and grounds were listed on the office of the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and listed as a California Historical Landmark during 1974, with a re-dedication on January 9, 1982 to commemorate the close of the bicentennial restoration project.

The California Senate chamber seats its 40 members in a large chamber room decorated in red, which is a reference to the British House of Lords, also the upper house of a bicameral legislature. The Latin phrase “Senatoris est civitatis libertatem tueri” [“It is the duty of a Senator to protect the liberty of the people”] lines a wall in the chamber.

The dais rests along a wall shaped like an “E”, with the central projection housing the rostrum. Along the cornice appears a quotation from Abraham

MIDTOWNGoing to school and living in an urban area has its advantages. Midtown is a perfect example of that.

The neighborhood, bordered by R Street on the South, J Street on the North, 16th Street on the West and 30th Street on the East, is home to many Hornets.

A large number of Sacramento State students live in Midtown due to the area’s fun and vibrant atmosphere and the numerous public transportation options available.

Students can take both bus and light rail to get to campus.

It is a largely residential community with tree-lined streets and old Victorians. It is also the center of Sacramento’s art, music, and cultural scene.

Boutiques, bars, clubs and upscale and casual dining abound and Midtown has the only winery located in the greater urban area.

Midtown hosts the famous “Second Saturday” street fair on the second Saturday of each month, which attracts thousands of visitors.

Midtown is known for being pedestrian-friendly and bike-friendly with continuous marked bike-lanes throughout the neighborhood and a bike path connecting to the American River Parkway which extends to Folsom.

OLD SACRAMENTOIn 1839, John Sutter arrived on the shore of the American River near its confluence with the Sacramento River. With the promise of a Mexican land grant, Sutter and his landing party established Sutter's Fort.

As the settlement grew and became permanent, it attracted other businessmen looking for opportunities. Sutter and the people he attracted created a commercial center in the area, but it was the Gold Rush in 1848 that created the City of Sacramento.

When gold was discovered in the nearby foothills by James Marshall, local merchant Sam Brannan rushed to open a store near the Sacramento River to take advantage of the convenient waterfront location. What was then called Sutter’s Embarcadero was soon known as the City of Sacramento and now Old Sacramento. The city rapidly grew into a trading center for miners outfitting themselves for the gold fields.

Early Sacramento’s waterfront location was

prime for commercial success, but was prone to severe flooding. The city also fell victim to repeated fires engulfing its hastily constructed buildings composed mainly of wood and canvas. In 1850 the new city experienced its first devastating flood, and in 1852, the city was again wiped out by high water. It was apparent that drastic measures would have to be taken if it was to be saved.

In 1853, a mammoth project was proposed to raise the city above the flood level. The ambitious and expensive proposal was not fully accepted until another devastating flood swept through the city in 1862. Within a few years, thousands of cubic yards of earth were brought in on wagons and the daring scheme to raise the street level began. The original street level can be seen throughout Old Sacramento under the boardwalks and in basements.

In the mid-1960’s, a plan was set forth to redevelop the area and through it, the first historic district in the West was created. Today, with 53 historic buildings, Old Sacramento has more buildings of historic value condensed into its 28 acres than most areas of similar size in the west.

The area has flourished and is once again a thriving commercial center. Many restaurants, shops, clubs and a comedy club line the wooden sidewalks of a popular hangout for Sacramento locals and tourists alike.

The highlight of that group is the Sacramento Kings. The local NBA franchise features players such as Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins and Jimmer Fredette. The Kings play at Power Balance Pavilion in Natomas, a neighborhood north of downtown Sacramento.

The Sacramento River Cats - the AAA affiliate of the Oakland A’s - play home games from April through early September at Raley Field in West Sacramento.

The local professional sports scene also features the United Football League’s Sacramento Mountain Lions, which play their home games on campus at Hornet Stadium, and the Sacramento Gold FC soccer club.

The Folsom Rodeo is a popular event each summer, as well as the Tour of California bike race and many golf tournaments.
