2012 RICHMOND SCHEDULE / RESULTS

THE GAME• Under first year head coach Danny Rocco, the Richmond Spiders football team won at Villanova for the

first time since 2000, beating the Wildcats, 28-17. The victory moved the Spiders’ record to 4-2, 2-1, while also snapping a three-game losing skid to Villanova.

• The Richmond Spiders hit the road for fourth time in five weeks this Saturday when the team travels north to face the No. 12/13-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats. Last week, New Hampshire handled Georgia State easily in Atlanta, 44-21, to move to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in CAA conference play.

• Saturday’s game against the Wildcats will mark the 21st time the two teams have met on the gridiron, with the squads splitting the previous 20 meetings, 10-10. New Hampshire has won the last two meetings between the two teams, with the last Spider win at UNH coming back on October 14, 2000.

QUICK SLANTS• The Spiders come in to Saturday’s game with a record of 20-17

over ranked opponents dating back to the start of the 2007 season. The team is 0-1 in 2012, having lost to then No. 4 ODU, 45-37.

• The last win for Richmond over a ranked opponent came on November 6, 2010 - a 13-10 overtime win over James Madison.

• The last time the Spiders beat a ranked New Hampshire team was on September 29, 2007 - a 45-38 win in Richmond.

• QB John Laub is having a stellar season for the Spiders, throw-ing for eight touchdowns while running for six more.

• LB Eric Wright leads the Richmond defense with 43 tackles, while fellow LB Darius McMillan has 42 stops.

• The Spiders have been tough to beat when scoring 30 or more points dating back to the 2005 season. When scoring over 30, Rich-mond is 40-5, including a 3-1 mark this year.

LAST TIME OUT• The Spiders won at Villanova for the first time since 2000,

beating the Wildcats, 28-17. Richmond forced four turnovers, with DB Darryl Hamilton (pictured) coming up with a pair of huge, fourth-quarter interceptions.

• WR Stepehen Barnette had a career-day against Villanova, catching five balls for a career-high 110 yards - including a 19-yard touchdown reception. The 100-yard game was the first in Barnette’s career.

• DT Evan Kelly was a force for the Spiders, coming up with six tackles in the win, including a career-best 1.5 sacks.

O�ensive Line Leading the CountryThe Richmond Spiders are leading the nation heading into this weekend, having allowed just one sack all year. The Spiders are tied with The Cita-del atop the category, having given up just one sack against then No.4-ranked Old Dominion on September 29.

Ball-Hawking DefenseComing into Saturday’s game against New Hampshire, the Richmond Spiders have totaled 11 interceptions in just six contests – tied for the CAA lead with the aforementioned Wildcats. DB Cooper Taylor is tied for the conference lead with three, while DB’s Darryl Hamilton and Doug Howell each have two.

On This Date in Spider Football HistoryOn October 13, 1917, the Richmond Spiders opened the season with a 28-0 victory over William & Mary in the 25th meeting between the two institutions. The Tribe and Spiders will meet later this season in what will be the 122nd game in the “South’s oldest football rivalry”.

Injury Derails Jovan SmithHB Jovan Smith has been medically disqualified from contact sports af-ter su�ering a recurrence of pre-existing spinal cord condition against Villanova. Smith led the team through the first six games in rushing with 320 yards. For his career, Smith totaled 586 yards on 107 carries in 16 games. The Springfield, Va. native averaged 5.5 yards per carry for his career, scoring five touchdowns - four in 2012.

Gaskins Continues ClimbWith his 1-yard touchdown run against Villanova on October 6, senior FB Kendall Gaskins scored his sixth TD of the season and the 28th of his illus-trious career. Gaskins now ranks fourth on the Spiders’ all-time scoring list, just one behind Uly Scott. Tim Hightower is the school record-holder with 39.

Spiders Snap Streak at VillanovaWith their hard-fought, 28-17 victory at Villanova on October 6, the Rich-mond Spiders captured their first road win in the series since the 2000 season. The win also snapped an overall three-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

Hamilton Comes Up HugeWith the Spiders holding a late lead at Villanova in the fourth quarter, red-shirt senior DB Darryl Hamilton stopped two late Wildcat drives with his first two interceptions of the season. Hamilton also totaled four tackles in the Spider victory.

Stephen Barnette Posts First 100-Yard GameIn the Spiders’ 28-17 win over Villanova on October 6, WR Stephen Bar-nette reeled in five catches for a career-best 110 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown. The 100-yard receiving game was the first for Barnette in his career.

Magic Number is 30The Spiders are 40-5 since 2005 when scoring 30+ points (3-1 in 2012). The only five setbacks over the last five seasons when scoring 30+ came to Appalachian State in the 2007 NCAA Semifinals, 55-35, to then-No. 1 James Madison, 38-31, in 2008, to App State in the 2009 Quarterfinals, 35-31, to New Hampshire, 45-43, in 2011 and to No. 4 Old Dominion in 2012, 45-37.

Lights Out When Leading at the Half Richmond is 51-5 since the start of 2004 when leading at the half. (3-0 in 2012). The four setbacks came in 2006 at No. 1 UNH, in 2004 versus No. 12 Maine, in 2008 versus No. 1 James Madison, to No. 5 Appalachian State in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2010 and to No. 9 Maine in 2011.

Third-Quarter DominanceThrough six games this season, the Richmond Spiders are dominating their opponents in the third quarter, out-scoring them 61-14. Against VMI on September 15, the Spiders ran away from the Keydets scoring 28 unanswered points in the frame.

Proli�c Richmond O�enseThe Spiders reeled o� four games with 35 or more points for just the second time in the program’s 129-year history, starting with the Gard-ner-Webb win and ending against No. 4 Old Dominion. The streak was the longest for the Spiders since the 2005 season, when the team accom-plished the feat for the first time in school history.

Laub Posts Career Numbers Against Old DominionIn the Spiders’ 45-37 loss to then-ranked No. 4 Old Dominion on Septem-ber 29, senior QB John Laub had a career day. Laub set career-best marks with 27 completions, 44 attempts and 339 yards. Laub also tied his sin-gle-game mark with two touchdown tosses. The 300-yard passing game was the first in the career for the Coplay, Pa. native.

Howell Continues Strong Play Versus MonarchsSenior DB Doug Howell continued his strong play of late against then-ranked No. 4 Old Dominion on September 29, picking o� his third pass in the past two games, taking the interception back 22 yards for his first career score. Howell also had a career-best nine tackles.

Edwards Shreds Old DominionIn Richmond’s 45-37 loss to then-ranked No. 4 Old Dominion, junior WR Ben Edwards had his best day in a Spider uniform. Edwards had a ca-reer-high 182 receiving yards, matching his career-best with 11 recep-tions and one touchdown. Edwards had a brilliant catch-and-run in the first quarter for the Spiders, taking it in from 39 yards for a score.

Spiders’ Stingy DefenseIn contests against Gardner-Webb, VMI and Georgia State, the Spiders al-lowed their opponents to score just 28 points combined. That’s the few-est points allowed in three-straight contests since the 2008 season (48-0 win over Georgetown on Oct. 25, 34-14 win over Hofstra on Nov. 8, 31-14 win over Delaware on Nov. 15).

Spiders Sell-Out for 11th Time in Robins Stadium HistoryThe Richmond Spiders continue to sell out Robins Stadium, as both games this season have reached capacity at 8,700. Since opening prior to the 2010 season, Richmond has sold out 11 contests, including the past seven in a row.

The Total PackageNo other team in CAA Football has won more conference titles since 1998 than Richmond. The Spiders have five to their credit (’98, ’00, ’05, ’07, ’09), one more than Massachusetts and Delaware. In 2008, Richmond became just the second-ever private school to win the FCS National Champion-ship, joining Furman (1998). But Richmond’s success is not just on the field. The football program was one of just 25 D-I teams in 2007 to earn the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for the graduation rates of its foot-ball players and one of just 23 in 2008 before achieving it again in 2009.

Laub Rushes Spiders Past Georgia StateSenior captain QB John Laub had a nose for the end zone against the Georgia State Panthers on September 22, totaling four touchdowns with three coming on rushes. The four total scores is a career high for Laub, while his team-best 73 rushing yards were also a career high for the Co-play, Pa. native.

McMillan Everywhere for SpidersSenior captain LB Darius McMillan was everywhere on the field for the Spiders against Georgia State – a common theme this season for the Hampton, Va. product. McMillan had a game-high 10 tackles, including seven solo.

Taylor Named CAA Defensive Player of the WeekAfter recording five tackles, two interceptions and a touchdown against VMI, senior DB Cooper Taylor was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on September 17. In the Spiders’ 47-6 win at VMI, Taylor was every-where on the field, helping limit the Keydets to just 197 yards of total of-fense. Taylor’s 35-yard interception return for a touchdown was the first score of his career.

Hinshaw Sets Pair of School Records Against VMISophomore PK Remington Hinshaw put on a school-record performance against VMI on September 15. Hinshaw set the school mark for most field goals in a game, hitting 4-of-5, including a career-long 37-yard e�ort. On the day, Hinshaw totaled 17 points, setting the record for most points by a kicker in a single game.

Grant Takes Opening Kick For Six Against VMI Sophomore DB Justin Grant started the Spiders-VMI game o� with some fireworks on September 15, running the opening kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown. The kickoff return for a score was the first of Grant’s career and the first for the Spiders since November 14, 2009, when Tremayne Graham returned a kicko� for six points.

Non-League BrillianceRichmond has not lost a non-conference FCS game in the regular season since 2005 and is a spotless 16-0 since then. The last regular season FCS loss was at Lafayette, 7-0, in 2005. Including the Spiders’ annual game versus an FBS opponent, Richmond’s non-conference regular-season re-cord since 2007 is 14-4 (that includes wins at Duke in 2009 and 2011).

Richmond Claims 500th Win in Program HistoryWith its 41-8 victory over Gardner-Webb on September 8 at Robins Stadi-um, the Richmond Spiders football team won its 500th game in program history. In 129 seasons of football, the Spiders have posted an overall record of 500-616-53.

Laub Carves Up Gardner-WebbAfter starting the season with career bests against Virginia, redshirt se-nior John Laub eclipsed those numbers in Richmond’s win over Gard-ner-Webb. In the 41-8 victory, Laub completed 14-of-24 passes for a ca-reer-high 267 yards and career-best two touchdowns. Laub connected on a 46-yard score with junior WR Ben Edwards and a 5-yard TD to FB Kendall Gaskins.

Spiders Extend Home-Opener Streak to SevenWith its 41-8 win over Gardner-Webb on September 8, the Richmond Spiders extended their home-opener win streak to seven. During the streak, Richmond has defeated four Big South teams (Elon, VMI, Wagner and Gardner-Webb). At Robins Stadium, the Spiders are 3-0 in home openers, winning by an average margin of 18 points.

Richmond Undefeated in Night Games at Robins StadiumIn its three night games at Robins Stadium, the Spiders have posted an undefeated mark of 3-0. This season, Richmond routed Gardner-Webb, 41-8, on September 8. . In 2011, Richmond defeated Wagner, 21-6, in the first night game at Robins Stadium before taking down VMI, 34-19, the following week.

Strauss Solid in Spider Debut Against Former TeamThrust into action quickly, redshirt sophomore QB Michael Strauss made the most of his playing time against his former team – the Virginia Cava-liers. After starting QB John Laub’s helmet was yanked off, Strauss came in and threw a TD pass to Kendall Gaskins on his first collegiate pass. On the day, Strauss went 7-for-8 with one touchdown toss.

Great Debuts for Fisher, GreenMaking their debuts for the Richmond Spiders against Virginia on Sep-tember 1, redshirt freshman FB Seth Fisher and true freshman Jacobi Green each scored a touchdown. Green punched in a score from 1-yard out, while Fisher caught a 4-yard toss from John Laub in the third quarter.

Hicks Kicks it Well Versus VirginiaRedshirt senior P Nick Hicks had a career day against Virginia on Sep-tember 1. On the afternoon, Hicks punted the ball eight times for a ca-reer-best 345 yards. Hicks also tied his career high with a 65-yard e�ort in the second quarter. For the game, Hicks averaged 43.1 yards a punt, including pinning the ball inside the 20 yard-line three times.

Taylor Named to Senior Bowl Watch ListRichmond DB Cooper Taylor was named to the first-ever Senior Bowl Watch List on August 24. The list includes the nation’s top seniors and NFL prospects from around the nation, as the top 100 seniors in the coun-try will be invited to participate in the 2013 Senior Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 26 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. Taylor is one of just 29 players on the Senior Bowl Watch List from a non-FBS school and one of four selected from the CAA Football conference.

Future FBS OpponentsIn August, the Richmond Spiders announced their future FBS opponents, with Virginia playing a prominent role in the future schedule. The two teams will meet at least three more times in the near future – 2014, 2016 and 2018. The Spiders will play N.C. State in 2013, Maryland in 2015, Bos-ton College in 2017 and Virginia Tech in 2021.

Five Spiders Named Team Captains for 2012At the Spider spring game, seniors John Laub and Cooper Taylor were named team captains for the 2012 season. Then at the end of training camp, three more players – LB Darius McMillan, FB Kendall Gaskins and OL Austin Gund – were also selected as captains in a vote of the Richmond football team.

Human-Highlight-Reel Barnette Makes ESPN In 2011, redshirt freshman WR Stephen Barnette made a pair of high-light-reel catches at Old Dominion, the latter of which was the No. 10 play on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays last Saturday. The receiver used all 6-foot-3 of his frame to out-jump his defender in the end zone and snare an Aaron Corp laser with one hand for a 14-yard TD that tied the game at 28-28 in the fourth quarter. His other highlight came earlier in the game when he de�ected a Corp pass in the air, spun and came down with the catch for an 18-yard gain.

E. Claiborne Robins Stadium The stadium bears the name E. Claiborne Robins in honor of the decades of generous support that the Robins Family and the Robins Foundation have provided to the University, including athletics and the new stadi-um project. Since 2001, the previous facility at this site had been known as the First Market Stadium, in recognition of a gift from Bobby Ukrop, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ukrop’s Supermarkets, Richmond alumnus and emeritus member of the University’s Board of Trustees. Ukrop has also acknowledged his support for the stadium’s new name.

The University of Richmond announced Tuesday Dec. 6, 2011, that Danny Rocco has been named the 35th head coach of the Spider Football program. A three-time Big South Coach of the Year as the head coach of Liberty who brings nearly 30 years of coaching expe-rience to Richmond, Rocco was introduced at a press conference on Wednesday Dec. 7 in the Robins Center. “I am pleased to welcome Coach Rocco and his family to the Uni-versity of Richmond,” said Richmond Athletic Director Jim Miller. “He is an experienced coach with a proven record of leadership both on the �eld and in the community. Coach Rocco is the right �t for Spider Football in an important time for our program.” “I’m very excited about the opportunity given to me by Jim Miller and President Ayers to be the head football coach at the University of Richmond,” said Rocco. “Richmond is a very impressive academic institution that combines the signi�cance and importance of success on the �eld and in the classroom. The recent success of Richmond football excites me and I really can’t wait to get to work returning the Spider program back to those winning ways.” Rocco arrived at Liberty following the program’s 1-10 �nish in 2005 and transformed the program as the architect of six consec-utive winning seasons with the Flames. During his �rst season in 2006, Liberty won �ve more games (6-5) than the previous year, an improvement that tied for the best FCS turnaround in the nation that season. As a result of his immediate impact on the program, Rocco was named Big South Coach of the Year for the �rst time in school history in 2006, the �rst of three straight years he would receive the honor. He would go on to be named a �nalist for the national Eddie Robin-son Award and Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award in each of the past three seasons. Since the team’s stunning turnaround in 2006, Rocco’s teams continued to dominate in the Big South Conference and beyond. The Flames have rolled to a 47-20 overall record and an impressive 26-5 mark in Big South play under Rocco, winning no fewer than seven games in each of the past �ve seasons. Nationally, Liberty has �n-ished the last four years ranked inside the Top 25 in both major FCS polls. During Rocco’s six years at the helm in Lynchburg, the Flames cap-tured their �rst-ever Big South Championship in 2007 and went on to win the next three conference titles as well. During this four-year span, Rocco had the third-highest winning percentage among FCS coaches nationally with his 34-11 record (.756). Rocco’s overall win-ning percentage of .702 ranks �fth in the nation among FCS coaches over the last 10 years of competition. Liberty was able to achieve and sustain such success under Roc-co by winning on both sides of the ball. From 2007-10, the Flames ranked �rst in the nation among FCS programs with 37.28 scoring average per game while ranking seventh by allowing just 19.17 points per game. The Flames were also the top-ranked team in FCS Football in turnover margin over the course of Rocco’s �rst �ve sea-sons at Liberty. Rocco’s players have undoubtedly exceled under his guidance. He has coached 97 Big South all-conference honorees and 19 players who have garnered All-America honors, including a pair of consen-sus All-Americans in running back Rashad Jennings (2008) and kick-er Matt Begins (2009, 2010).

Four of Rocco’s student-athletes, Vince Redd (New England), Stephen Sene (St. Louis), Trey Jacobs (Washington) and Rashad Jennings (Jacksonville) have also gone on to play in the professional ranks in the National Football League. Jennings became Liberty’s �rst NFL Draft selection in two decades when he was chosen in the seventh round by the Jaguars in 2009. Prior to his arrival at Liberty, Rocco spent the previous �ve sea-sons at Virginia, beginning in 2001. Here, he helped guide the Cava-liers to four-consecutive bowl appearances, including back-to-back Continental Tire Bowl victories in 2002 and 2003, and 37 overall wins alongside Al Groh as an assistant head coach and linebacker coach. Rocco would also serve as the Cavaliers’ recruiting coordinator his �rst year in Charlottesville. His 2002 recruiting class was ranked in the top 10 in the nation by many of the major recruiting services, including a �fth-place ranking by ESPN. Rocco would quickly be promoted to associate head coach while continuing to serve as line-backers coach. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater, Wake Forest. He spent the 1984 and 1985 seasons with the Demon Deacons before being hired as the defensive line coach before the 1986 season. Rocco was then hired by Colorado head coach Bill McCartney as an assistant linebackers coach for the 1987 season before heading to Tulsa to serve as the outside linebackers coach from 1998-2000. He returned to the East Coast for the 1991-93 season to work for current New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin as his defensive line coach at Boston College, helping Coughlin revitalize the Golden Eagle’s return to the national stage as participants in the 1992 Hall of Fame Bowl and the 1993 Carquest Bowl. Following his successful stint at Boston College, Rocco then served as the outside linebackers coach at the University of Texas at Austin, where the Longhorns captured three straight conference titles, including winning the inaugural Big 12 Championship in 1996 and earning bids to three consecutive bowl games (Sun Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl). His career would then continue at Maryland, where he served as the linebackers coach during the 1998 and 1999 seasons before re-uniting with his mentor, Groh, as an assistant linebacker and special teams coach with the New York Jets for the team’s 2000 campaign. He would then follow Groh to Virginia for the 2001-2005 seasons. Rocco began his college playing career at Penn State, where he earned two varsity letters and competed in the 1979 Liberty Bowl and the 1980 Fiesta Bowl before transferring to Wake Forest. While in Winston-Salem, he was a two-year starter and senior captain for Groh. He was no stranger to coaching after growing up in a football family. His father, Frank Rocco, Sr., served as an assistant coach at Penn State under Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno before joining the Liberty sta� for a six-year stint in 2000. Frank Rocco, Jr., also joined the Flames sta� in 2000 as a wide receivers and quarterbacks coach and received a promotion to o�ensive coordinator prior to his depar-ture in 2003. Both he and brother, Dave, both currently coach at the high school level in Virginia. A native of Huntingdon, Pa., Rocco is married to the former Julie Mills. They are the parents of two children, David (20) and Amy (18).
