Good luck on a GREAT Season! 102 9th Street LeRoy, KS 66857 620-964-2355 [email protected] Iola High’s Mustang track team finds itself in a position it hasn’t been in for years. No returning state track meet qualifiers. Not to worry. The numbers remain steady with 33 out this season, just one off of last year’s total, and 12 are returning lettermen. Long- time head coach Marvin Smith, who told the Register he probably will continue to coach next year even though he is retiring as a teacher, has looked over this season’s crop of runners and field event athletes and likes what he sees. “I really like the way our team is shaping up, but we have some events in which we may struggle,” Smith said. “That’s all right. There are 18 events and if we do the best we can with what we’ve got, that is all you can ask.” The 2012 season is also the last hurrah for Iola in the Southeast Kansas League. Iola moves to the Pioneer League next year. The Mustangs will go after SEK event championships at home again this season. Iola hosts the SEK league meet for the second straight year in May. Can the Mustangs keep up the run as 4x800-meter cham- pions? Iola has won five con- secutive championships in the distance relay. “Our 4x800 could come from six individuals and they are all near the same times. Christian Kauth, Ty- ler Powelson and Mikal Bos- sell return from last year’s league championship team. Mikal will handle our sprint- ing chores this season but Tyler McIntosh, Jeremy Spears and Jacob Harrison can fill the relay slots.” As could senior Roman Yocham who is Iola’s top dis- tance runner. He has quali- fied for the Class 4A state track meet in his career at IHS plus went to the state cross country meet all four years. Yocham took third in the league 1600-meter race a year ago. Kauth, who has been on back-to-back SEK relay champion teams, also scored points in the 800. The senior is Iola’s returning triple jumper and has added the long jump this season. He was seventh in the SEK tri- ple jump. Powelson is a sophomore who joins Yocham and a strong group of distance runners. Senior Bryan Miller, sophomores Jeremy Spears and Bryan Mueller and freshman Blaine Klubek help take care of the long distance races for the Mus- tangs. Smith said junior Ja- son Tidd, sophomore Jacob Cooper and freshman Herm- stein are junior varsity long distance runners. Sophomore Adam Kauth is Iola’s only returning varsi- ty hurdler and placed fourth in the league as a freshman, tying the freshman record in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. He may also be in the high jump for the Mus- tangs along with competing in the relays. Michael Wilson, a sopho- more, took fourth in the pole vault at the SEK meet. He fin- ished ninth in the Class 4A regional in the event, clear- ing 11 feet. Junior Justin Baker competed in the pole vault in junior varsity meets a year ago. Sophomore Jacob Harri- son was out with an injury last year. He and Bossell, a senior, have turned out good sprint times in practices. “We’re really short-hand- ed in the field events. We have some throwers but not many with varsity experi- ence. Juniors Eli Grover and Stephen McDonald had a lot of success in junior varsity competition, especially in the discus,” Smith said. Grover placed eighth in the league meet’s discus event and McDonald was 11th. McDon- ald finished 10th at the Class 4A regional meet. Senior Zach Crawford came out for track this sea- son and is expected to help out in the javelin and discus. Crawford is also playing on the IHS golf team and Mc- Donald is playing on the IHS tennis team this spring. Senior Denton Christian and Grover are Iola’s shot putters. Coachable.“These kids listen and

work to get better. That’s what I’m looking for in players,” said Lyle Kern, Iola High’s Mustang tennis coach.

The Mustangs opened their 2012 tennis season two weeks ago. They had two meets including their home competition before spring break.

Kern has a small but “coachable” group on the ten-nis courts this season. There are four returners from last year’s team — all juniors — and three new players.

“Of course the goal is to get as many players to the state tournament. I’m not sure we’re at that point yet but I want them to have fun playing the sport,” Kern said.

Zeph Larney and Jordan Strickler are back and are Iola’s top singles players as the season starts. Larney had been showing the most improvement from last year until he became ill, missing the first competition and playing the home matches still not up to par.

“Zeph’s illness got him down but if he can get back in shape I look for him to be tough. Jordan impressed me that first meet when he

played as No. 1 singles for us. He knows where his weak-nesses are and is working to improve his game,” Kern said.

Right now, Larney and Strickler are the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players for Iola. Kern said he plans to switch them into a doubles team during the season “just to see how they work together.”

Junior Drew Smith is back and playing in the No. 2 dou-bles slot with junior Hayden Wolf. Wolf comes from a ten-nis family but is in his first season.

“Drew has made the most improvement since the be-ginning of practice. Hayden

is working pretty well with Drew in doubles competi-tion,” Kern said.

Iola’s No. 1 doubles team has first-ever players Brad Bazo, a senior, and Stephen McDonald, a junior. Kern said Bazo has shown good mobility for his size and McDonald works hard and communicates well with his partner.

“These two have improved in the two weeks they’ve been playing. Brad surprised me with the shots he runs down and I’ll probably give him a shot at playing sin-gles,” Kern said.

“Stephen could also play singles later but I really like

him as a doubles partner with his communication skills and his length. Ste-phen is the first one at prac-tice and he stays after prac-tice to work on his serve.”

Andrew Lowell is a junior who played last year and is out but “hasn’t been able to practice yet. We hope he will

be joining the team after spring break,” Kern said.

With seven players this season, there are no junior varsity competitions on the Iola High schedule. Next up for Mustang tennis is a meet at Coffeyville Thursday.

MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat boys’ track team is loaded for bear in 2012 and the girls’ have a top young runner back.

Marmaton Valley High spring sports are opening their seasons this week. The Wildcat baseball team has everybody back from last year and the softball team is young. Speaking of young, Marmaton Valley High’s golf team has one senior and two players with varsity experi-ence.

Ready. Set. Go.Wildcat Baseball

Marmaton Valley High head coach Derek Scharff sees a lot of potential on the Wildcat baseball squad for 2012.

“We were young last year and returned everybody. We finished the year strong and are looking to pick up where we left off last year,” Scharff said.

Juniors Cole Becker and Daylen Houk received Three Rivers League first team hon-ors. The Wildcats were 5-7 in league play and 7-14 overall. Senior Derrick Carr and junior Jimmy Frye earned honorable mention.

Frye was the Wildcats’ top pitcher at 4-5 and Becker went 3-4 on the season as a starter. Carr, junior Ryan Smith and sophomore Sage Hall each pitched last year.

“We should have a strong pitching corps if everyone stays healthy. We added (se-nior) Taylor (Lhilliuer) and we think he can step in and give us some good innings,” Scharff said.

Also back are seniors Aus-tin Harrison and Gage Stew-art and junior Levi Ramsey. Carr, Houk, Hall and Lhilli-uer can handle catching du-ties and play in the infield.

Stewart returns at first base and Smith is back at third base. Harrison is an infielder as is Hall. Ramsey, Frye and Houk will see time in the outfield also. Also ex-pected to rotate into the out-field are senior Dillon Hall, sophomore Chris Bowman

and freshman Shawn Frye.“We have everybody back

which is a good thing but we’re still not very deep. We have a lot of guys who will have to play several posi-tions. We’re trying to put our players in the best position to succeed,” Scharff said.

Scharff said the Wildcats will be competitive in non-league and league contests.

The Wildcats had a team batting average of .400 led by

Houk with a .475 average and 33 RBIs plus hit three home runs. Becker hammered out a .593 average and Jimmy Frye had a .492 average.

Marmaton Valley opens the season at Central Heights next Monday.

Wildcat GolfAnthony Tucker is the

lone senior back for the Wild-cats on the MVHS golf team. Sophomore Chance Steven-son placed 22nd at the Three

Rivers League tournament last year.

“We are really young this year with very little varsity experience returning,” said Mike McEwan, who has coached MVHS golf for eight years. The Wildcats finished third at the TRL tournament.

“It is going to be difficult for us to place as a team at varsity meets with our inex-perience.”

McEwan said the Wildcats have a good group of sopho-mores that got better as last year went on. He said those golfers need to continue im-proving this year.

Sophomores, who played junior varsity tournaments last year for the Wildcats, are Tristan Dickerson, Lane Hamm, Joey Jefferis and Austin Pinkerton. Marma-ton Valley has added three first-year players in sopho-mores Mike Swift Plaschka and Tommy Zibung and freshman Mitch Covey.

The Wildcats swing into golf action next Monday at Erie.

Wildcat TrackZach Louk will be going af-

ter his third straight double-event Three Rivers League track meet. The senior dis-tance runner is reigning TRL champion in the 1600-meter and 800-meter races.

Louk qualified for the Class 2A state track meet in the 800, 1600 and 3200 last year. He ran ninth in both the 3200 and the 800 and fin-ished 11th in the 1600-meter run. Louk set school records in the 1600 meters, 4 minutes, 31.85 seconds, and in the 3200-meter, 10:20.92, last year.

Senior Chase Dudley is back to defend his TRL triple jump championship and se-nior Zack English is the de-fending 300-meter intermedi-ate champion. Louk, English and juniors Lucas Hamlin and Carlos Gonzales return as the league 4x400-meter relay championship team. Junior Marcus Miller is a distance runner for the Cats.

Kaleb Stroud is Marmaton Valley’s top thrower, finish-

ing eighth in the shot put at the 2A regional meet. Junior Jared Kale was sixth in the javelin at regional. Nathan Smart is a junior out this season and is expected to do well in the throwing events.

“We have 28 kids out this season. We have a strong ju-nior and senior bunch who should be fun to watch,” said

HUMBOLDT — Golf is back.

Humboldt High reinstated its boys’ golf program for the 2012 spring season. The Cubs had a rich tradition in golf then numbers waned and the program was cut a couple of years ago.

With golf returning, Hum-boldt High’s spring sports season is full of action. An-other twist is Humboldt steps up from 2A competi-tion to Class 3A this spring.

The Lady Cubs softball team is coming off a Kansas Class 2A State Tournament

appearance. The Cub base-ball team is the defending Tri-Valley League co-cham-pion. Both teams are return-ing significant numbers of starters.

Humboldt High’s track teams have top performers back in the ranks.

Humboldt GolfJeff Wilkerson picks up

where he left off as head coach of the Cub golf team. The 2012 team has six play-ers.

“We are going to be a young team that should get better as the season progresses,” Wilkerson said.

On the team are Robbie Sellman, Jud Hawley, Dylan Greve, Elijah Farran, Tye Taylor and Chance Menzie.

The Cubs will play a mix of varsity and junior varsity tournaments this season. They open the season at Eu-reka on April 4.

Humboldt SoftballThe Lady Cubs handed

their head coach his 100th career victory when they won their 2011 Kansas Class 2A Substate Championship last May.

Brad Piley’s Humboldt High softball teams have compiled a 100-34 record in his six years at the helm. Da-vid Taylor returns as assis-

tant coach.Humboldt has seven re-

turning starters. The Cubs lost their starting pitcher to graduation but Piley likes his young pitching staff.

Leading the returners is Class 2A all-state selection senior Kylee Carson at first base. Seniors Taylyn Wells and Hannah McCall are back at second base and shortstop, respectively.

Senior Kindahl Young plays right field for the Lady Cubs. Sophomores Kayle Riebel and Haley Riebel are at third base and left field, respectively. Handling the catching duties again is sophomore Morgan Morris.

The Lady Cubs were 13-11 last year and finished 5-7 in Tri-Valley League.

“We have a lot of experi-ence back from last year. Our pitching should be in good hands with a young pitch-ing staff,” Piley said. “Our starting pitcher is Jaci Ross, a freshman. Breanna Kline is our second pitcher and she’s a freshman. Sopho-more Sheri Middleton will see some time on the mound for us also.”

When Kline isn’t pitching, she will be Humboldt’s start-ing center fielder.

“The girls have worked

very hard to be in this posi-tion. Our goals will be set very high this year,” Piley said.

Other team members are senior Miranda Myers, ju-niors Megan Herder and Melanie Herder, sophomores Savannah Williams and Leighton Jaro and Marli Al-len and freshmen Delaney Umholtz, Kasey Beeman, Trisha Prock, Devyn Smith, Ashly Coy, Chelsea Bailey, Jalissa Beachy, Tea Shelton and Macy Bennett.

The Lady Cubs’ season opener is today at Neodesha in Tri-Valley League action.

Humboldt BaseballPitching and defense are

strengths for the Cub base-ball team in 2012. The Cubs have their top two pitchers back from a year ago and six starters.

Humboldt went 17-6 over-all last year. The Cubs were 9-3 in Tri-Valley League play earning a co-championship with Burlington.

“We started a lot of fresh-men last year and we went through some growing pains,” said second-year head coach Mike Miller. “I think we learned a lot from some of the mistakes that hurt us in games and we look forward to building on that

this year.”Junior Nathan Whitcomb

and sophomore Grayson Pearish were pretty good on the mound last year for the Cubs. Whitcomb was 9-0 with a 4.03 ERA (earned run aver-age) and he struck out 31 bat-ters. Pearish led the team in strikeouts with 42 going 7-2 with a 3.47 ERA.

Providing depth on the pitching staff are sopho-mores Caleb Vanatta, Alex Murrow and Austin Beeman. Also pegged to log pitching time are junior Dustin Prock and freshmen Kason Sie-mens and Justin Meins.

Vanatta is an outfielder who hit .467 and sophomore infielder Caleb D’Armond hit .415. Whitcomb also plays in the infield and catches plus he hammered out a .451 batting average last year.

Sophomore Hunter Mur-row returns to the Cub in-field and was a .342 hitter. Pearish hit .333 and plays infield when not pitching. Alex Murrow and Beeman add depth to the catching po-sition.

Prock and Meins can play outfield as well as Siemens. Freshmen Jacob Carpenter and Zach Vanatta will see

COLONY — Crest High’s Lady Lancers and Lancers are under new direction for the 2012 track season.

Ben Vaughn takes over the CHS track program. He is a first-year coach with Chris Dvorak as his assistant coach.

“I competed in track when I was in high school at Jayhawk-Linn in Mound City but this is my first time coaching the sport,” Vaughn said. He graduated from Jay-hawk-Linn in 2003, did a stint in the U.S. Marine Corps then went to Sterling College.

Vaughn works as a para-professional in the Crest school district. He has also coached youth baseball and football.

Crest’s veteran athletes will help their new coach leading by example. The Crest girls have four return-ers on their squad of 10 and the boys bring back five on their team of 10 athletes.

“I think we are going to have a great season. All the athletes are really excited about this year,” Vaughn said. “We have a great group of seniors and underclass-men who are stepping up into leadership roles.”

The Lancers have five back from last year’s Three Rivers League championship team.

The Lancers tied with Pleas-anton to share the TRL title.

Junior Jordan Morton and senior Jayden Bowen went second and fifth in the jav-elin at the league meet. Mor-ton went on to place 12th in the javelin in Class 1A state meet. Bowen qualified for the state track meet in both the discus and the shot put.

Senior Chris Brallier and junior David Womelsdorf

were members of the TRL gold-medal winning 4x800-meter relay team. Morton and senior Cole Bowen were half of the TRL champion-ship 4x100-meter relay team.

Brallier competes in the long and triple jump events for the Lancers. Vaughn looks to junior Dylan Sedlak and freshman Codi Vermil-lion to give the Lancers some depth in the jumping pits.

C. Bowen is Crest’s lone re-turning sprinter, competing in the 100-meter dash. Sedlak and Vermillion are expected to compete in the 100 and 200. Senior Jory Ramsey is back to compete in the 400-meter and relay races.

Womelsdorf leads the long distance running corps for the Lancers. Freshmen Ky-ler Bowen and Rene Rodri-guez are joining him in the 1600 and 3200.

“We expect to have a lot of success individually and as teams,” Vaughn said.

Having success is what junior Kurston Gilliland brings for the Lady Lancers. Gilliland comes back from a two-medal state appearance as a sophomore. She took the bronze medal in the Class 1A shot put then captured the seventh-place medal in the 1A girls’ javelin event.

Gilliland is the Three Riv-ers League defending cham-pion in all three throwing events — shot put, discus and javelin. She led the Lady Lancers to a third-place team finish.

Senior Shayla Stephens was second in the league jav-elin throw. Also competing in the javelin will be senior

Katrina Strickler. Freshman Krystal Cooper is slotted to compete in the shot and dis-cus events.

Sophomore Emily Frank is back as a sprinter in the 100-meter dash and as a long jumper. Vaughn sees fresh-man Tiffany Jackman con-tributing as a long and triple jumper and junior Calessa Callaway giving depth to the sprint events.

The Lady Lancers have some young hurdlers in sophomore Alexis Lakin and freshmen Brooklyn La-Cross and Brianna Scovill. Those three will also run the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter races.

Crest goes to the Lyndon High Invitational Friday.

Expectations are high in 2012 for Iola High’s baseball team. This is the season they’ve all been waiting to ar-rive.

Southeast Kansas League coaches were of the same mind as they se-lected the Mustangs as the league preseason favorite. It’s Iola’s final season in the SEK.

“That’s an honor for our kids and our program,” said Mark Percy, IHS head coach. “We still have to play the games. We bring everybody back from last year’s team but the SEK teams have a lot of players back from top to bottom.”

Percy is tempering the high expec-tations with some reality checks but .. “I’m excited with what we have. We can beat any team if we play well each time we step on the field.”

There’s 26 out for the Mustang team this year, ensuring a full var-sity and junior varsity schedule. Nineteen players are returners on a team that posted their best-ever sea-son, 17-5, in the IHS baseball’s eight-year history. The Mustangs were in the SEK championship hunt until the final doubleheader of the regular season.

Taking a double loss to Pittsburg last year put the Mustangs at 12-4, ty-ing for third place in the SEK. It was Iola’s best finish in the league.

Led by seniors Clint Heffern, Braden Larson, Corey Taylor, Jer-rik Sigg, Drew Walden, Devon Con-ner, Jarred Latta and Shelton Reno, the Mustangs are poised for another run at the SEK title. Also back are juniors Levi Ashmore, Mason Coons,

Eric Heffern, Shae Beasley, Tyler Clubine, Aaron Barclay and Tyler Tomlinson.

Sophomores Trent Latta, Austin Snyder, Derrick Weir and Trey Wil-son are also returning.

New to the Mustangs in 2012 are junior Cole Morrison and freshmen Alex Bauer, Kohl Endicott, Drew Faulhaber, Wyatt Hines, Thealvin Minor and Brock Peters.

Sigg earned Kansas Baseball Coaches Association state honors last year. The center fielder and pitcher was named to the KSCA Class 4A all-state second team as an outfielder.

Sigg and Ashmore were All-SEK first team selections. Sigg is a two-time All-SEK first team selection. Clint Heffern and Walden earned SEK second-team honors.

“I really like us the most defen-sively. We’re strong up the middle and that’s where we’re the best in the league. You start with Drew at catcher, Levi at shortstop, Clint at second and Jerrik in center field,” Percy said.

“These guys have played together for a long time. Levi and Clint can flat roll up a double play.”

New bat regulations for high school baseball are in effect this season. The change requires all non-wood bats meet the Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) performances standard. The new standard ensures that performances by non-wood bats are more comparable to those of wood bats. It’s also expected to mini-mize risk, improve play and increase

teaching opportunities.“We do have power in our lineup

but we’ve always wanted our players to hit strikes and hit the ball hard. Our kids are bigger and stronger and have bought into what we’re doing,” Percy said.

“I see a lot more of the small-ball game with the new bats this year. We have speed in our starting group and we can put pressure on defenses. We’ll bunt and move runners and hit to the gaps.”

Percy said the goal for the Mus-tang batters is to get on base. He said the Mustangs have to cut down on strikeouts.

“We have to figure out how to get on and get runs in big situations.”

The Mustangs have a good core of pitchers in Sigg, J. Latta, C. Heffern, Taylor, Ashmore, Coons, Barclay along with Larson and Walden work-ing some at the varsity level. Clubine and Minor are left-handers working at the junior varsity level right now. Also expected to see action on the mound in junior varsity games are T. Latta, Beasley, Tomlinson, Faulha-ber and Wilson.

“We have the pitchers but we’re a bit behind working on our break-ing pitches. Most of these guys have

UNIONTOWN — Union-town High’s softball team is out to defend its Three Riv-ers League championship in 2012. Uniontown High’s track teams have a few more members going into the new season, several returning with success.

Numbers are down a bit for the Eagle baseball and golf teams but coaches are optimistic for solid showings in 2012.

One new development for all the spring teams from UHS is they are back into Kansas Class 2A competi-tion. Last year the Eagle teams competed in the Class 3A level.

Eagle SoftballUniontown’s softball team

has 16 players for the 2012 season. That’s down a bit but the Eagles have 15 returning players off a 13-8 team which went 9-3 for the Three Rivers League championship.

The Eagle girls’ junior varsity team went undefeat-ed, 11-0. There will not be a junior varsity schedule this season.

“Our early season prac-tices have been very com-petitive and the starting lineup is undecided,” said

Alan Shinn, Eagle girls’ head coach. “Any of the 15 return-ing players could start the games with Yates Center on March 27.”

Leading the way for the Eagles are seniors Hope Jur-gensen, Taylor Shook, Jes-sica Murrow and Sabrena McAnulty. Jurgensen, who has signed to play softball at Allen Community College in Iola, earned All-TRL first-team honors as did Shook. Murrow received league

honorable mention.Jurgensen plays first base

and had a .475 batting aver-age. Shook is Uniontown’s top pitcher back and plays catcher and outfield. Shook hit at a .482 clip last year.

Murrow can share the catching duties plus play in the outfield with McAnulty. Sophomore Taylor Wade earned TRL honorable men-tions as a pitcher and out-fielder.

Another pitcher for the Eagles is sophomore Mandy Ridge. Juniors Raylene Crys-tal, Jamie Dawson, Regan Weyant and Brittany Tan-ner are all back as infielders. The other sophomores back are Amber Bartlett, Lakyn Coyan, Haley Felt, Torrie Ha-thaway and Britney Stokes. Junior Jackie DuVall is the new player on the team.

“At times last year we started five freshmen so our sophomores have varsity game experience. I expect our defense to be better and we are counting on our hit-ting to improve,” Shinn said.

The Three Rivers League will be tough with Chetopa, Northeast-Arma and Jay-hawk-Linn as contenders for the league title.

The Eagles open today at home against Yates Center.

Eagle Track

Uniontown High’s boys have 13 athletes on the track team and there are nine on the girls’ track team.

Leading the way for the boys is junior Trenton Mill-er, who is a two-time state track meet qualifier in Class 2A in 2010 and in Class 3A last year. Miller finished 11th in the 3A discus event. Miller was the silver medalist in the discus in the Three Rivers League meet.

Sophomores Skyler Ri-ley and Carter Wood scored points in the high jump and hurdle events, respectively, for the Eagles at the league meet Isaac Sympson, a soph-omore, is working in the hur-dle events and freshman Cole Schafer will be competing in the long jump and sprint races.

Dakota Henderson and Alex Bradbury, the lone se-niors on the team, participat-ed in cross country in the fall and lead the Eagle boys’ dis-tance runners. Sophomore Montana Beerbower and freshman Jonathan Wheeler will run the 1600 and 3200 races.

Juniors Zach Johns and Zak Hueston, sophomore David Brown and freshman Shawn Wisely provide depth to the throwing events for the Eagles.

“All the athletes have been working hard in their respec-tive events,” said long-time head coach Jackie Hall. “It is exciting to have this number of athletes out and we look forward to watching them improve throughout the track season.”

Throwing events are strong on the Eagle girls’ track team also. Juniors Abby Dixon, Amelia Brown and Danisha Robinson lead the way. Dixon finished sec-ond in the league meet in the discus and Brown was sixth.

Dixon and Brown went third and fifth in the league javelin event and fifth and seventh in the shot put. Three freshmen — Hannah Fry, Aleah Sutterby and Sar-ah Townsend are working in the throws.

Junior Rachel Henderson placed third in the 3200-me-ter run at the league meet and sixth in the 1600 meters. Sophomore Kelli Wilkinson was a state qualifier in cross country last fall. She and freshman Jana Wilkinson both run the distance races.

Uniontown begins the sea-son April 3 at Oswego.

LE ROY — A youth movement has hit Southern Coffey County High track program in 2012. The Titans have just one returning athlete while the Lady Titans return four athletes.

But the numbers are up with 40 athletes — combining girls and boys — under “new” head coach Jeff True. True steps into the head coach-ing spot in 2012 after serving as as-sistant coach for nine years.

“We’re very young. Twenty-four of our 40 are freshmen and sophomores this season,” True said.

The Lady Titans have three state meet qualifiers back on the track and in field events. Senior Jenna Witte-man is a two-time qualifier in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. She was on two relay teams qualify-ing for state as a sophomore.

Ashton Isch, a senior, finished 14th in the 1A state triple jump last year. She competed in the triple jump at state as a sophomore plus ran on two state-qualified relay teams that season.

Junior Sarah Webb advanced to the 1A state high jump competition last year. She equaled her best of 4 feet, 10 inches placing 10th. Junior Martyna Hegwald adds depth to the high jump for the Lady Titans.

Katelyn Rogers, a senior, leads the SCCH girls in throwing events com-peting in the javelin. Sophomore Bre-anna Isch is expected to score points for the team in the shot put. Miranda Alumbaugh is a sophomore distance runner.

Charlie Patterson, a junior, is the lone returning letterman for the Ti-tans. Patterson competes in the long jump and sprint races.

The Titans have four athletes who are being counted on to compete for points in the throwing events. Se-niors Scott Fischer and KEWade Sea-bolt in the shot put, discus and jav-elin. Aaron True, a sophomore, is a javelin thrower.

Others on the boys’ team are senior Josh Haney, juniors Turner Ander-son, T.J. Barber and Tre Copeland, sophomores Zach Loveall, Chism Newkirk, Angus Nelson, Chris Da-vis and Tyler Houston and freshmen Walker Harred, Josiah Witteman, Brier Johnson, Michael Hill, Jordan Edwards, Damion Lacrone, Cameron Gillis, Trever Vahsholtz and Bryson Meats.

Others on the girls’ team are se-niors Misty Gilbert and Mary Beyer, junior Myranda Hegwald, sopho-mores Chenae Newkirk and Kianie

David and freshmen Jessica Cole, Kaylie Garretson, Shelby Neely, Cal-laway Patterson, Connie Lyda and Raven Mendoza.

YATES CENTER — New head coaches are at the helm of Yates Center High’s soft-ball and baseball teams for 2012.

Things stayed the same for Yates Center High’s golf team and track teams head-ing into the new seasons.

Wildcat BaseballTim Jones spent the past

two seasons as the Wildcat assistant coach so moving into the head spot hasn’t been a big transition for him or the Wildcat players.

Yates Center puts a squad of 23 on the diamond for 2012 and seven of those are re-turning lettermen.

“Our strength is we’re young. My concern going into the season is we’re young,” Jones said. “We came into the season with open minds and ready to learn. We have a lack of ba-sic baseball knowledge.”

Back for the Wildcats are senior third baseman and pitcher Cody Green, senior second baseman Derek Shaw, senior first baseman and out-fielder Brent Rice and senior first baseman, third baseman and pitcher Blake Francis. Also junior outfielders Alex Waddell and Garrison Hall and sophomore catcher/out-

fielder Austin McNett.“We are not a strong team

yet but all of our players have a mind frame that they are ready to work and learn every day. These kids will push each other,” Jones said.

Others on the team vying for starting positions are ju-nior Anthony Keenan, soph-omores Dalton Sicka, Trevor Chism, Brett McGee, Robert Arnold and Chris Valencia and freshmen Micah Taylor, Eli Spencer, Michael Weber, Justin Rossillon and Blake Rutherford.

Otis Hendryx is Jones’ as-sistant coach.

Jones said he sees the Wildcats in the middle of the Tri-Valley League and slowly moving toward the top by the end of the season. He said he doesn’t see the Wildcats win-ning the TVL title “but I see us being at the top half and surprising a few teams.

“If our pitching picks up, we will be great. We have two senior pitchers, two sopho-more pitchers and two fresh-man pitchers so we need to gain experience.”

The Wildcats went 6-16 overall. They were 5-15 in TVL play.

Yates Center opens the season today on the road

at Uniontown with a non-league doubleheader.

Wildcat SoftballYates Center High’s soft-

ball team is coming off a tough 3-18 season. The Wild-cats are under the direction of Joe Arell, who is in his first season coaching at the high school level. He has coached traveling team soft-ball for 13 years.

Rex McVey is returning as the Cats’ assistant coach.

“We have a lot of return-ing starters who are very talented along with a great group of newcomers,” Arell said. “We should have a great pitching staff and a solid in-field and a fast outfield.”

Yates Center’s pitching ace is senior Daryean Es-tes as a starter the past two seasons. Estes’ battery mate is sophomore catcher Becky Wendland.

Playing at second base is junior Allie Bruner and other returning infielders are senior Brianne Crel-lin and sophomore Chessa Chrisman. Senior Skyler Claibourn, juniors Addie Hughes, Bailee Stuber and

Shannon Staats and sopho-more Bailie Chambers are outfielders.

The Wildcats have two freshman pitchers in Asia Larsen and Aubrey Smith and a freshman catcher, Shayna Karmann. Senior Capri Arell and freshman Mallory Staats will work their way into the outfield spots and sophomore Court-ney Arell is an infielder.

“The girls are learning a new coaching style. We’re a young team but everyone is working very hard and start-ing to understand the style of softball I coach,” Arell said.

“I am expecting great things from our softball team.”

Wildcat TrackYates Center has a state

qualifier on each track squad. The Wildcat girls have five returning letter-winners in the ranks of their 12 athletes.

Only one returning letter-man is on the boys’ squad but a pretty good one. Junior Sam Aguirre claimed the seventh-place medal in the

Kansas Class 2A 110-meter high hurdle race at the state meet. It was his first state meet.

Aguirre also qualified for the state in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. In the Tri-Valley League meet a year ago, he posted person-al-best times in both hurdle races, claiming silver med-als. He was also fourth in the long jump at the league com-petition.

pitched a lot and are huge competitors on the mound. They do a good job of throw-ing strikes,” Percy said.

Percy said this season they have some depth in pitching that they can ro-tate people in when trouble crops up. He said the key to success for the Mustang pitchers is to throw strikes and allow the defense to work behind them.

When he wasn’t patrol-ling center field for Iola, Sigg was the ace on the mound for the Mustangs. He went 5-2 with a 3.28 earned run average (ERA) and had three complete games. Sigg allowed 46 hits but had a team-leading 44 strikeouts and issued 23 walks.

Sigg led the Mustangs at the plate with a .403 bat-ting average. He had 27 hits which included six doubles, three triples and three home runs. He drove in 22 runs and scored 25. Sigg drew 13 walks and he was 11 of 12 on stolen base attempts.

Ashmore is Iola’s short-stop defensively and its leadoff hitter. Ashmore was Iola’s second-leading hitter at .395 with 30 hits — four doubles, three triples and three home runs. He scored 37 runs and drove in 12.

Ashmore drew 13 walks on the season and went 10 of 12 in stolen base attempts. He was a relief pitcher with a ERA of 1.20 in 11 2/3 in-nings of work with one save and one win. He allowed eight hits and struck out 11.

Clint Heffern is Iola’s sec-

ond baseman and was Iola’s third-leading hitter at .359 with 23 hits, 16 RBIs and 24 runs scored. Heffern had six doubles and led the team in stolen bases, 12 of 15, and drew 15 walks. Heffern also saw duty on the mound with an ERA of 3.54 with five wins.

Behind the plate is Walden as the Mustangs’ starting catcher. He hit .277 with 13 hits including one home run and three doubles. He had 10 RBIs and six runs scored. Backing up Walden is Weir and Hines.

Jarred Latta is the start-ing left fielder but also went

4-2 as a pitcher a year ago with a 2.40 ERA. Latta gave up 38 hits, walked 15 and struck out 20 batters. Offen-sively, Latta hit .204.

Taylor starts at first base, hitting .295 with 23 RBIs and 18 hits. He scored 17 runs and hit three home runs. And at the other corner — third base — is Larson, who hit .288 with three home runs and six doubles plus was third in runs batted in for the team with 21.

Taylor was 1-1 as a pitch-er last season but is expect-ed to see more work on the mound this year. Larson is also working on his pitch-

ing skills for possible relief work.

Conner is back in right field for Iola, hitting .254 with 15 hits. Coons saw plenty of playing time in the outfield spots last year plus can play on the infield and pitch for the Mustangs. Coons hit .310 with 18 hits, 13 RBIs and scoring 18 runs a year ago.

Eric Heffern, Reno and Cole are players Percy plans to rotate into the outfield throughout the season.

Barclay is coming off knee surgery from an in-jury during football season. Percy said Barclay will be

one of Iola’s top junior var-sity ptichers and will see ac-tion on the mound in varsity games. Barclay was a desig-nated hitter last year on the varsity with a .280 average with 14 hits and 11 RBIs.

“I tell our younger play-ers that it is hard to get into the varsity lineup but it’s still their goal to work hard and improve. You never know what might happen,” Percy said.

The Mustangs open the season today at home against Labette County High’s Grizzlies. The junior varsity played at Labette County Monday.

shortstops with experience. We-seloh hit .313 for Iola last year and led the Fillies in RBIs with 12. En-dicott was a .382 hitter for Marma-ton Valley with 13 hits in 13 games for the Wildcats.

Shay returns as the starting second baseman. Shay is a solid

infield player with quickness and her throwing has improved. Shay hit .229 with seven singles and four doubles and drove in six runs.

In the outfield, Callaway, Scho-maker, Cleaver and Rowe are slat-ed to see action.

“We have good numbers. Last

year the girls were put in posi-tions and started for the first time and it was tough. I’m expecting good things from these girls this year,” Coons said.

“Offensively, we have a little more power in the lineup but we need to be able to get bunts down and move runners. We want to put

the ball in play and not strike out as much this year to put pressure on defenses. We want to make opponents make a play to get us out,” Coons said.

Iola opens the season at home today against Labette County. The junior varsity was at Labette County Monday.

Jamie Stodgell, who has been MVHS track head coach for 10 years. Her assistant coach-es are Lori Stephens, Kent Houk and Kristin Schainost.

“It is a big plus to have our senior leadership. The sopho-mores and freshmen are work-ing very hard to fill our gaps.”

Marmaton Valley’s girls have one returning letter-man in sophomore Ashtynn Louk. She ran second in the 3200-meter race and third in the 1600-meter race at the TRL meet. She placed fifth in the 3200 and seventh in the 1600 at the 2A regional meet.

Freshman Tessa Olson comes off a tremendous ju-nior high career at Marma-ton Valley. She long jumps, triple jumps and runs the 400-meter dash.

Juniors Kelsey Mc-Clintock and Kristin Shaw are a sprinter and a thrower, respectively. Stodgell looks to sophomores Lauren Korte and Dawn Hobbs and Olson to combine with Louk on the 4x400-meter relay.

Freshmen Jodie Holland and Molly Hamlin are throwers.

to open the 2012 season.Wildcat Softball

All starting positions were up for grabs this season for Marmaton Valley High’s soft-ball team. The Wildcats have five returning lettermen from last year’s 7-13 squad.

“Positions are yet undecid-ed,” said Wildcat head coach Brenda Mills, who has been at the helm for seven years, two weeks ago. “Every play-er continues to work hard at practice striving to earn a starting position.”

Mills and new assistant coach Kim Ensminger have 12 players on the team this year. Marmaton Valley was 4-7 in Three Rivers League play last year.

Juniors Kailey Boyd and Kacie Shadden have earned league honors as outfielders the past two years. Boyd was named to the All-TRL first team and Shadden received honorable mention.

“These girls can play any-where we need them and they are good at the plate,” Mills said.

Another pair of juniors, Tabitha Ford and MaRyiah Cavender, saw quite a bit of playing time last year. Ford

is listed as a pitcher, catcher and infielder while Cavender plays third base and in the outfield. Sophomore Kait-lin Ensminger can play first base, second base and in the outfield.

“Tabitha and MaRyiah are looking very good at practice and we’re expecting big plays from these girls. Kaitlin’s a solid, strong player with the bat and at defense,” Mills said.

Juniors Kayla Beth and Destiny Jones, sophomores Tapanga Turner and Jocelyn Miller are newcomers. The Wildcats have three fresh-men in Caysha Houk, Emily Boyd and Shauna Knight.

“Our newcomers show enthusiasm and drive. With these qualities along with a strong focus on fundamen-tals and teamwork, we have every reason to expect a good season,” Mills said.

“We’re inexperienced, es-pecially at pitcher, but our team has the potential of be-ing very competitive.”

Ford, Turner and Boyd are working as pitchers for the Wildcats.

playing time in the outfield and some infield ac-tion.

“We return a great group of kids who really love to play baseball,” Miller said. “They worked really hard during the offseason to get better and you can definitely see it.

“We have really high expectations for our team and look forward to another great season.”

Rounding out the Humboldt squad are seniors Timothy Vaughn and Michael Zimmerman, ju-niors Robb Hauser, Robert Moore Jr., Judd Hawley and Trevor Gibson, sophomores Ryan Huse, Pres-ton Roseberry and Jayce Schomaker and freshmen Paden Griffiths, Cody Crays and Devin Davidson.

Miller, whose assistant coach is Jay Carpenter, said it was hard to choose a preseason favorite in the Tri-Valley League. Burlington, Neodesha and Caney Valley are all solid teams.

“It will be another challenging league schedule for us,” he said.

The Cubs open the season today at Neodesha.Humboldt Track

Returning is the reigning Tri-Valley League champion in the triple jump and 400-meter dash for the Cubs. Junior Tanner McNutt set an HHS triple jump record at 41 feet, 6 inches winning the league title last year.

McNutt and fellow juniors Nick Keazer and Hayden Boring were members of the second-place 4x400-meter relay at the league meet. The relay team qualified for the Class 2A state track meet.

McNutt came within a whisker of winning the state title in the 400 meters last year. He claimed the silver medal plus qualified for the state meet in the triple jump (11th) and the long jump (14th).

Leading the way for the Lady Cubs are seniors Michaela Bartlett and Darrah Tinkler and junior Whitney Strack. Strack and Bartlett were on the third-place 4x800-meter relay team at the TVL meet and the sixth-place 4x100 relay team. Strack placed fifth in the league 100-meter dash.

“I expect us to be more competitive in meet plac-ings. We have a very good core of returning ath-letes who will help the new additions to our team,” said Eric Carlson, who is in his 10th year coaching

at HHS. “We have some returning with state ex-perience and they can show the younger kids the hard work it takes to make it to state.”

Carlson pointed out Humboldt moves back up to Class 3A this season, which will make qualify-ing for state harder in some events. Carlson’s as-sistant coaches are Rob Myers, Jason Weilert and Josh Kristalyn.

Here are the rest of the team members: seniors - Hunter Isaac, Kendall West, Emily Durand, Keif-er Rutledge and Jordan Irey; juniors- Kristin Mc-Clanahan, Blake Crawford, Logan Yokum, Mariah Phillips, Brook Boatwright, Rachel Crays, Shayli Ellis, Kelsey Cramer, Kile Martin and Ryan Gean; sophomores-Kollbyn Allen, Michael Davis, Trezz Rogers, James Clark, Rayden Goltry, Layne Gonza-les, Jimmy Mangold, Dawson Mauk, Alexis Mar-tin, Alli Thummel and Zach Osborn; freshmen-Jaden Fewins, Wynnter Snyder, Ethan Bartlett, Andrew Keazer, Brittany Smith, Markiz Pullium and Jacob Ward.

The Cubs and Lady Cubs begin the track season Friday at Central Heights.

for the Eagles.“This season senior

leadership is our strength. These guys know what it’s going to take to make it out of regionals,” said fifth-year golf coach Jason Tour-tillott. “We lost some key players from last year and we’re going to have to fill those spots.”

Chance Hoener has played golf now four years for the Eagles. Brenden Wood is a three-year player while Seth Sympson and Zach Travis have played two years now. The four have lettered.

Drew George has been on the team for three years but hasn’t lettered.

“Our goal every season is to get a team qualified for the state tournament but we know we have some ob-

stacles ahead of us,” Tour-tillott said. “We’re going to take it one week at a time working on our individual games to improve.”

Uniontown’s home course is at Fort Scott. The Eagles play at Erie next Monday to begin the season.

Eagle BaseballSpeed and defense are

strengths for the Uniontown High baseball team in 2012. They have just 12 players on their team.

“Our defense is solid with TRL (Three Rivers League) first team members and se-niors Max Labbe and Jor-dan Woods in starting in the middle infield,” said head coach Chris Woods. Union-town returns five starters off their 6-13 team.

Along with Labbe and

Woods are senior Mitchell Newman, junior Garrett Murrow and sophomore Chase Gleason.

Others on the team are ju-niors Joe Barbosa and Aus-tin Jefferis and freshmen A.J. Johnson, Zach Dawson, John Kuns, Jacob Duffey and Dalton Fuhrman.

“Almost everyone on the team can pitch and we have three catchers with experi-ence. They have been work-ing very hard and I am ex-cited to see how this season plays out,” Woods said.

“The Three Rivers League gets tougher and tougher ev-ery year. If everyone stays healthy we should be very competitive and be right up there with the best.”

The Eagles open the sea-son today at home against Yates Center.

H EagleContinued from page 20

Sophomore Mindi Hollo-way qualified for the state meet in the 800-meter run and finished 14th. Holloway also runs the 100-meter high hurdles for Yates Center.

Yates Center returns three off its girls’ 4x400-meter re-lay team that just missed advancing to the state meet. Holloway and senior Haley Bedell and junior Paige Steinforth ran on the 4x400 and the 4x100-meter relay teams.

Steinforth is a high jumper and placed third in the event at the TVL meet. Bedell runs the hurdle races and com-petes in the javelin.

Junior Macey Heger and sophomore Rachel Mentzer are back in the distance rac-es and relays for Yates Cen-ter.

Others on the girls’ team are sophomores Nikki Akin, Courtney Douglas and fresh-men Rylie Albert, Marlana Buchanan, Lindsay Francis, Katelyn Hatch and Mazie Wilson.

“We expect Sam to have

a great season and Mindi should do well in the 800 again,” said Dan Berg, who

has been the YCHS track coach for eight years with Tim McCullough as his as-

sistant.“Most of the boys are

young but working hard as are the girls — young and working hard. We are excit-ed to be working with them but we’re still not sure where they all will fit in.”

Joining Aguirre on the boys’ team are sophomore Ceaton Cooper and fresh-men Myles Dice, Bryce Leon, Drew Pringle and Kody Rat-cliff.

“We think we can do well as a team with both squads as well as individuals in their respective events,” Berg said.

Wildcat GolfThree of the five players

who brought home a second Kansas Sand Greens Region-al championship and placed third at the sand greens state tournament are back on the links for the Wildcats.

In the past two seasons, the Yates Center golf team has had two regional cham-pionships, a state champion-ship and a third-place finish at the Kansas sand greens state.

Senior Dylan Bauman and sophomores Nick Schemper and Jaden Knoblock are a part of that tradition. Bau-man was on the state cham-pionship team in 2010.

Bauman placed 20th in the 2011 state sand greens tour-nament played in Yates Cen-ter. He won the sand greens tournament at Riley County last year.

Schember finished 23rd at the state tournament last year and Knoblock was 33rd.

Yates Center has three new golfers on the team — junior Mason Hartwig and sophomores Richie Mentzer and Reid Brant.

“If Mason, Richie and Reid step up, we should be very competitive on sand again,” said Kevin Barnes, who is in his third year as YCHS golf coach.

“I look for us to struggle during the regular season playing on grass greens. At regionals, we should be very competitive in the sand greens tournaments.”

The Wildcats tee off the season next Monday at Erie.

“The more tools you have in your tool belt the better you can play the game of softball,” said Vince Coons, Iola High Fillies’ softball head coach.

Coons likes the tools the Fillies have going into the 2012 softball season. Flex-ibility is a word Coons uses a lot talking about the IHS softball team.

“We have flexibility in our pitching, defensive align-ment and in our batting or-der. I keep telling our girls the more tools we have the better we’ll be as a team. You improve yourself and that helps the team improve,” Coons said.

With just two seniors on the squad, the Fillies are still a young team but have varsity experience among the nine returners. Iola is a team heavy with juniors and sophomores, which is a good thing.

Breail Thompson and Lau-ren Toney have been fixtures on the softball team since their freshman season. The two seniors provide strong leadership as the Fillies head into their final season of Southeast Kansas League action.

The Fillies are coming off a tough 3-16 season. They were 2-12 in SEK play last year, finishing eighth.

“We have four dates in

our first week of the season. Right off the bat, we face de-fending champion Labette County which will be a test for us. We’ll know a lot about ourselves after the first week,” Coons said.

Thompson earned SEK second-team softball honors. She was 3-11 in the circle for Iola, facing 464 batters in 78 innings. Thompson struck out 64 batters and issued 52 walks.

Thompson hit .283 last year with nine singles and six doubles. She drove in nine runs which was third on the team.

Toney moved from short-stop to third base last year and handled the hot corner well for the Fillies. She led the team in stolen bases with seven and hit .303 with 14 singles, two doubles and a triple.

Other returners for the Fillies are juniors Caitlyn Callaway, Holly Schomak-er, Libby Shay and Katie Thompson and sophomores Hallie Cleaver, Carrie Mock and MacKenzie Weseloh. Hannah Endicott is a sopho-more with varsity experi-ence who transferred to Iola from Marmaton Valley.

Junior Abbey St. Clair played for the Fillies as a freshman and is back out

this season. Emily Ware is a junior also back out but has not practiced because of an injury. Coons said E. Ware suffered a concussion at the end of the basketball season and is still not cleared to par-ticipate.

New to the team are ju-niors Channel Coyne and Tessa Rowe, sophomore Danielle Ware and freshmen Shelby Reno, Bayleigh See-ber, Katie Shields and Baylea Thompson.

Weseloh saw some varsity pitching duty last year and Endicott pitched 31 innings for Marmaton Valley. Endi-cott struck out 16 but issued 50 walks. Weseloh was 0-3 for the Fillies with eight strike-outs and 15 walks.

“We have three pitchers that provide us flexibility.

Breail has improved on her location of pitches and on her change-up pitch. She’s al-ways been good fielding her position. MacKenzie, as did Breail, worked over the win-ter to be in more command of her pitches,” Coons said. “Hannah is working on con-trol but has a hard pitch.”

Coons stressed Iola pitch-ers had to work on reducing the number of base-on-balls issued. The Fillies gave up 76 walks last year.

“Combine those walks with defensive errors and we weren’t able to get people out. There’s no defense to walks,” he said.

Reno and Shields are working as pitchers for the junior varsity. Shields is also a catcher.

Iola’s varsity has two

catchers in Schomaker and Cleaver. Coons said Scho-maker has a lot of softball knowledge and is aggressive behind the plate and is be-coming more confident call-ing pitches. Cleaver has the stronger throwing arm.

Schomaker hit .354 with 14 singles, two doubles and a triple. Cleaver went .244 at the plate with 10 hits. Scho-maker drove in seven runs and Cleaver had six RBIs.

Katie Thompson is back at first base for Iola and Calla-way is working at first also. Coons said both girls have developed their reaches in fielding the base. Callaway played center field last year and will start in center again.

Weseloh and Endicott are

Six returners and six freshmen fill out Iola High’s 2012 golf team. Head coach Rick Horton is excited about the competition among his full squad.

“We have five seniors who have played three full sea-sons for us and are leading us into this season. Our lone sophomore who played var-sity for us last year and these freshmen will push our older guys,” Horton said.

“This season is going to be fun and full of high expecta-tions.”

With 12 golfers, the Mus-tangs will field a full varsity team and a full junior var-sity team. Horton said the schedule has been set up so that all 12 golfers will see some varsity action through the season.

Back for their fourth sea-son on the Mustang squad are seniors Kris Collins, Zach Crawford, Nick Jacobs, Doug Stewart and Jarrett Mos-brucker. Weston Hines was the lone freshman a year ago

and broke into varsity tour-nament action and is ready for his sophomore season.

Collins was Iola’s top re-turner a year ago but was hampered by a foot injury all season. He was two strokes away from qualifying for the Kansas Class 4A state tournament. Stewart was in almost the same position in the 2011 4A regional with Hines and Jacobs one stroke behind Stewart.

“Top to bottom we have a solid team. Key for us this year for all of our golfers is course management,” Hor-ton said. “We want to play smart golf. The guys need to hit the fairways and un-derstand they don’t need to try to reach a green from 250 yards out with one swing.”

Horton said the Mustang golfers need to make two good drives to reach a green from that distance and stay out of trouble. “Set up good chip shots and makeable putts,” Horton said about managing the courses.

Iola has a group of fresh-men coming off two tremen-dous years of middle school golf. The Iola Middle School golf team won the SEK ju-nior high golf championship trophy two years in a row.

Iola’s freshmen are Shane Walden, Kaden Macha, Adam Peterson, Drake Dieker, Isa-iah Grover and Matt Jacobs. Horton said the young kids were accustomed to playing just nine-hole tournaments off the closer tee boxes.

“But these guys can hit the ball long so I’m not too con-cerned about their transi-tion to the high school game. Some of these guys play a lot of summer league golf. But yes, the high school tourna-ments are 18 holes and the tee boxes are farther back,” Horton said.

Horton said the seniors have been good leaders in practices. He said the golfers have been more comfortable and relaxed in practices.

“They all want to get bet-ter. We go through our drills

and play nine holes and more drills. Our seniors set the tone for the younger guys to follow,” he said.

This is Iola’s final season in Southeast Kansas League action as they switch to the Pioneer League next year. The SEK uses four desig-nated tournaments in the season as league competition to determine team and indi-vidual standings.

Iola hosts the second SEK tournament on April 3 at Al-len County Country Club. The Mustangs open the sea-son Thursday at Indepen-dence, which is an SEK tour-nament.

The Mustangs finished ninth as a team last year but

Horton said several of the better players did not play in SEK tournaments for several different reasons.

Crawford finished 33rd in the individual rankings and

Mosbrucker was 35th,“We expect to do much bet-

ter this season. The guys are excited and so am I,” Horton said.

Iola High Fillies are rely-ing on four returning ath-letes to score points in their respective events in track meets in 2012. After those four, they look to the fresh-men.

Seniors Kelsey Larson and Kendra Taiclet can score in four events each for the Fil-lies this season. Breanna Stout is the lone junior on the track team and is poised to carry on an IHS tradition in the pole vault.

Sophomore Darci Collins is the other returning let-terman for the Fillies. Col-lins brings experience in the throwing events. Collins nar-rowly missed scoring in the league meet as a freshman.

“We graduated eight se-nior girls, who all scored in the league meet. It appeared that 2012 would be a bleak season but hope is on the ho-rizon,” said longtime head coach Marvin Smith, who told the Register he is still planning to coach track and field next year despite retir-ing as a teacher at the end of this school year.

“We have 10 freshmen and they bring some quality to go with the numbers.”

For their farewell to the Southeast Kansas League, Iola will host the SEK meet for a second straight year in May.

Larson is the defending Southeast Kansas League 400-meter champion. She qualified for the Class 4A state meet in the 400 and as a member of the Fillies’ 4x100-meter relay team. Larson

scored points in the 400, the 200-meter dash, the javelin and the 4x100 relay at the SEK meet last year.

Taiclet also scored points for the Fillies in four events at the SEK meet — 100-meter high hurdles, the 100-meter dash, the 200 meters and the 4x100 relay. Taiclet qualified for the 4A state meet in high hurdles — just missing the finals by one place — the 200 and the 4x100 relay. Taiclet holds the IHS girls’ records in the 100-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermedi-ate hurdles.

Stout claimed third in the SEK pole vault event and placed in the high jump. Stout qualified for the state track meet in pole vault, fin-ishing 13th.

“Obviously, we expect a big season from those girls, but our newcomers will be essential to developing some relays. That is important to

us if we are going to improve as a team,” Smith said.

“We had expected to enter Kendra, Kelsey and Brean-na in four open events. Not gonna happen. We are going to have some relays — good ones.”

Smith is looking to the Fil-lies’ freshmen to step in to relay roles. Emery Driskel, Emma Piazza, Addie Haar and Ashley Campbell made up a fast 4x100 relay as eighth graders. Smith said Campbell broke the IMS eighth-grade girls’ 200-meter dash record.

“None have been 400 run-ners although Addie was one of the top 800 runners in the area. They are rather bold in practice following Kelsey and Kendra’s example as to what it takes to be success-ful,” Smith said.

Piazza and Haar are work-ing on the long jump and triple jump in addition to

the sprints. Campbell was a successful high jumper in middle school. Driskel is working on hurdles and pole vaulting.

With no returning dis-tance runners, freshman Jo Lohman comes in as the top distance runner after a strong cross country season in the fall. Lohman is expect-ed to compete in the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter races. Sopho-more Shannon Vogel also had a good cross country sea-son and Smith sees her and Lohman helping make up a 4x800-meter relay with Haar.

Collins is the top thrower returning in the shot put and discus events. The Fillies have numbers in the throw-ing ranks but those girls are inexperienced. Sophomore Alexis Hobbs scored in the javelin in junior varsity meets last year and has add-ed the discus event.

Sophomores Karlie Lower,

Courtney Smith and Megan Smith are throwing the jav-elin. Sophomores Paige Mill-er and Allison Cleaver are out for the first time and will help in the throws.

Freshmen Emmalee Sea-bolt, Kyra Moore, Lexie Long, Brianne Jett and Whit-ney Ulrich are in the javelin and discus events. Lauren Hunt, another freshman, is working in the javelin and pole vault.

Iola travels to Altamont Friday for the Labette Coun-ty High Varsity/Junior Var-sity Invitational.
