Protection offi cers Sean O’Keeffe and

Bruce Carey highlight the beginnings of soil

conservation in Queensland, and outline the

critical role offi cers from the Department of

Agriculture and Stock and later agencies, in

collaboration with farmers, have played in

‘saving our soil’.

Join the Brotherhood of the Wordless as they

celebrate the launch of their two-part book

Air for the Birds / Big Thoughts from the

Frightened Well.

The Brotherhood is made up of writers with

autism and other disabilities that preclude

speech or the muscle ability required to

use keyboards or pens. Through facilitated

communication, they work with trusted scribes

to bring their thoughts and words to life.

The Brotherhood will perform samples of their

work accompanied by Richard Grantham

(Deep Blue Orchestra / Ghostboy with Golden

Virtues) on viola, loops and keys. The launch

will also see special feature sets from young

wheelchair bound hip hop maestro MC Wheels

and ACT’s bohemian playwright and gypsy

slam champion Adam Hadley (Mr Fibby).

The book, available for purchase on the day,

has been created with the fi nancial support of

the Jupiters Casino Community Benefi t Fund.

Join cultural heritage professionals for an

exploration of the career of Norman Tindale

and why his name is so prominent in Australian

anthropology, linguistics, native title and

Aboriginal history.

Tindale has often been criticised for the invasive

nature of his research and treating Aboriginal

people as scientifi c objects. Others are grateful

for his foresight in collecting such a vast

amount of data.

The symposium questions the responsibilities

of those working with this material, and

discusses the need to bring the past to life

in an accurate way. Speakers include Michael

Aird, Vernon Ah Kee, Daniel Browning (ABC

Radio National), Professor Bruce Rigsby (UQ),

Dr. Nancy Williams (UQ), Jeanie Bell (Batchelor

Institute) and more.

Unheard stories are given a voice in this

powerful exhibition of scientifi c photographs

and contemporary artworks, exploring the

legacy of a 1938 anthropological expedition to

Aboriginal communities.

Artist Vernon Ah Kee has drawn on

photographs of his family from the Tindale

collection to produce poignant works capturing

the personalities behind the scientifi c images.

Transforming Tindale is a thought-provoking

journey into the Tindale collection, what it

means to Aboriginal people and its place in

Queensland’s history.

Michael was born at Southport and has spent

most of his life living in the Gold Coast region,

the traditional country of his ancestors. His

career as an anthropologist in the area of

Aboriginal cultural heritage has included the

curating of several exhibitions.

As curator of the Transforming Tindale

exhibition at SLQ, Michael has explored the

legacy of Norman Tindale’s anthropological

expedition to Aboriginal communities in 1938.

Listed in the world’s Who’s Who of Women,

Sam Cook is cross-artform practitioner,

educator, arts manager and leader. A retired

musician, she is the co-founder of Nomads

Palace, the world’s fi rst green-designed

travelling multi-arts venue and was until

recently the Director of The Dreaming Festival.

Sam is a playwright, writer, visual artist and

graphic designer. She was the CEO of a

leading Australian Theatre company before

launching her company KISSmyBLAKarts

brand encompassing artist management and

apparel. She is also a columnist for Tracker,

and founder of Australia’s Blak History Month.

Richard has roots with the Kooma, Kamilaroi,

Jiman and Goreng Goreng people and is a

Brisbane-based, international Indigenous artist.

He is renowned for his humour, political

his painting, performance and video practice.

Hear about how he challenges stereotypes and

mainstream ideas of Aboriginal art and culture.

of the 1982 Commonwealth Games

when Brisbane came alive with political

demonstrations for Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander civil liberties.

Brisbane, the political climate of the time

and the history of land rights for Indigenous

Australians with this exhibition of original

footage, photographs and personal stories from

advocators of this revolutionary movement.

Queensland’s leading Indigenous arts

collective, proppaNOW, was set up in Brisbane

to give urban-based Aboriginal artists a

voice. They give a unique and controversial

perspective of black Australia which is

provoking. Presenting a social history of the

proppaNOW collective, this exhibition displays

stories from the artists about their artwork, the

industry and their personal experiences.

police lines and barricades.

Bob Weatherall, a Gumulray elder, has

worked for many years at Foundation for

Aboriginal and Islander Research Action.

He is currently the chair of the Centre for

Indigenous Cultural Policy in Brisbane and is a

high profi le Aboriginal activist who had a lead

role in establishing the Tent City in Musgrave

Park in 1982 when Brisbane hosted the

Commonwealth Games. Come along to listen

to some local history.

Aunty Valda Coolwell is a Goorang Goorang

woman of Central Queensland, and a key

fi gure in Queensland’s Indigenous and South

Sea Islander communities. A past President

of the Brisbane Council of Elders for six

years, Aunty Valda is still an active community

member and participates in a range of activities

including supporting organisations, mentoring

young people and presenting at functions.

Tiga Bayles, a descendant of the Wirri clan

of the Birri Gubba Nation, is a social activist

and supporter of Aboriginal land rights.

Tiga was one of the original Aboriginal Tent

Embassy members in 1972 and this year

he was in Canberra on Australia Day for the

highly publicised 40th anniversary. He was

also involved in the Commonwealth Games

protests in Brisbane in 1982. Join Tiga as he

talks about his life, his experiences and his

Part of Metal As Anything

Don the white gloves and explore examples

of etching from SLQ’s Australian Library of

Art and John Oxley Library. The printmaking

technique of etching has been used as both

a documentary and an artistic medium.

Examples from colonial Queensland prints

to contemporary artists’ books show the

variety of effects that etching can achieve,

while copper etching plates help explain the

practicalities of the technique.

eccentric toad shooters feature amid a carnival

of quirky characters and landscapes by one of

Australia’s leading contemporary printmakers.
