RELENTLESS TODAYSince arriving on The Hill in

1998, Lisa Glenn has crafted the Tennessee rowing program into a pe-rennial power on the national stage. From the time she arrived, her tire-less work has lifted the program from its infancy to eight NCAA Rowing

Championships appearances, including seven in the last nine years. But her sights

are set a little higher. Her relentless and passionate approach to

training has the Lady Vols primed to make a return to the NCAAs in 2012.

Having only lost four to graduation last year, Tennes-

see will look to the experienced leadership of this year’s seniors: Ashley Case, Kristin Coggin, Hilary Epes and Erika Lauderdale.

Adding to the experience of Tennessee’s four seniors are 25 returners who have experienced both the demands of Glenn’s preparation and the thrill of the success her teams have known.

A strong fall season - including gold medal honors at the Chattanooga Head Race, the Head of the Charles and the Head of the Hooch - has put Tennessee in a position to carry that momentum full force into the spring.

That autumnal success has the Lady Vols ranked at No. 18 in the CRCA/US Rowing preseason coaches’ poll.

VISION2010 Conference Coach of the Year Lisa Glenn has lifted the Lady Vols to national prominence, and she’s just getting started.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Nestled in the majestic rolling hills of East Tennessee, Melton Hill Lake is a world-class venue located just a few miles from Tennessee’s downtown-Knoxville campus.

The silver-medalist U.S. Olympic Rowing Team used the lake to train prior to the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The course has also hosted the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Asso-ciation Championships, US Nationals, Women’s Nationals, Master’s Nationals and the Pan-American Trials. Melton Hill hosted the NCAA Championships in 2007, and has been home to the C-USA Championships since 2010.

The 2,000-meter course features a straight course that can be buoyed for seven lanes. The ridges that flank both banks protect the lake from wind gusts, adding to its appeal.

The Lady Vols’ schedule features three events on Melton Hill.

March 17-18 Oak Ridge Inv.April 21 SIRA ChampionshipsMay 12 C-USA Championships

FIRST-CLASS TRAVEL

OCT. 22: HEAD OF THE CHARLESLisa Glenn first took Tennessee to Boston in 1998. Since then, the Lady Vols have competed at the world’s greatest regatta 12 more times. Tennessee holds the course record in the club 8 category, having won gold in that event six times since 2001.

MARCH 31: MISSION BAYThe Lady Vols travel to the sun-kissed shores of Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif. for the 39th Annual San Diego Crew Clas-sic. Tennessee has competed in the event four times, never finishing below sixth. The 2003 V8 won gold.

APRIL 28: PRINCETON, N.J.To be considered among the best, you must compete against the best. The Lady Vols annually square off against the top of the Ivy League. This year Tennessee will visit Princeton, N.J., to square off with the Tigers for the third time in program his-tory.

FEARLESS TOMORROWTennessee’s spring schedule offers some unique challenges and oppotunities

for continued success. From the nearby waters of Melton Hill Lake, to Mission Bay in San Diego, the Lady Vols travel in all directions to tackle some fierce competition.

MARCH 17-18: OAK RIDGE CARDINAL INVITATIONAL, MELTON HILL LAKETo open the spring season, the Lady Vols start close to home at the Oak

Ridge Cardinal Invitational. More than 10 teams head to Melton Hill Lake to size up their 2012 crews. The weekend will offer Tennessee the chance to race against some fierce competition, including preseason No. 1 Virginia, as well as C-USA foe Alabama.

MARCH 24: AT CENTRAL FLORIDA, LAKE PICKETT, FLA.After Oak Ridge, the varsity crew heads to Florida for an annual spring break

training excursion. To test the week’s progress, the Lady Vols continue with conference play with a race against C-USA foe Central Florida on Lake Pickett, just east of Orlando.

MARCH 31-APRIL 1: SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC, MISSION BAYThe Lady Vols travel to San Diego Calif., for the 39th Annual San Diego

Crew Classic on Mission Bay. Past successes highlight the Lady Vols’ previous four trips, including a V8 gold medal in 2003. No Tennessee shell has ever fin-ished worse than fifth at the event, a tribute to UT’s success as the event attracts more than 3,000 athletes from both the east and west coasts every year.

APRIL 4: AT MICHIGAN, BELLEVILLE LAKE, BELLEVILLE, MICH.Ranked ninth in the CRCA/US Rowing preseason poll, the Michigan Wol-

verines provide a great challenge for the Lady Vols. Tennessee will travel to face Michigan on Belleville Lake, southwest of Detroit.

Lady Vols Strike Gold, Again and Again

The fall season offered the Tennessee row-ing team the opportunity to work out some kinks, make some improvements and build some momentum heading into the spring. Not satisfied with checking off only one or two of those items, they pulled the hat trick and did all three.

Beginning with the Chattanooga Head Race, Lisa Glenn’s team shook the dust off the oars and shells and set out for competition for the first time since 2011’s season ended.

However, there was no time to waste as the second outing of the fall was at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Two days in Bean Town offered the Lady Vols a measuring stick of sorts, as thousands of col-legiate rowers descend on the event every year.

To punctuate the fall season, the team stayed close to home for the Head of the Hooch Re-gatta in Chattanooga. The final fall race fea-tured one last opportunity to finalize the hard work and effort in the fall training process.

CHATTANOOGA HEAD RACEBefore the race, Glenn said this event was

all about “working out the kinks,” after a long off-season. By all accounts, there couldn’t have been many kinks to work out as the Lady Vols cruised to six medals, including three gold.

Tennessee’s V8, V4 and pair all scored gold medals while another V4 scored a silver and UT took the top three spots in the pair. HEAD OF THE CHARLES

Almost every collegiate rower dreams of competing at the Head of the Charles Regatta. For Tennessee rowers, that dream is realized ev-ery year as the Lady Vols have been to Boston 13 times since Lisa Glenn took the reigns of Tennessee’s program.

The Lady Vols hold a HOCR course record in the club 8 event, a category they won five times before this season’s trip.

Chalk one more up for Tennessee. The Lady Vol shell coxed by freshman Jessie Richardson,

and including Maddie Bishop, Mary-Hannah Daugherty, Ashley Case, Liz Dickson, Jessica Burns, Rachel White, Evelyn Radford and Tay-lor Athan claimed UT’s sixth all-time club gold at the Head of the Charles with a 17-minute 41.48-second mark in 2011. UT’s V8 scored an 11th-place finish to close out another trip to Boston.

HEAD OF THE HOOCHThe Lady Vols had a fairly successful fall

season prior to the Head of the Hooch, held on the Tennessee River in downtown Chattanoo-ga. The final regatta of the fall, however, proved to be one of the most successful campaigns of the UT’s fall schedule.

With several of the nation’s top programs, as well as more than a few C-USA foes, among those competing, Tennessee charged ahead for a gold medals in the V8 and V4 categories.

8 TENNESSEE ROWING /// 2012 YEARBOOK

During her 14 years at the helm of the University of Tennessee women’s rowing team, Head Coach Lisa Glenn has helped the 14-year-old program mature into a national power. Now in her 14th season, Glenn has led the Lady Vols to seven appearances at the NCAA Championships, including three con-secutive full-team selections in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Glenn helped propel the Lady Vols to new heights this past season, leading the Orange and White to its first-ever Conference-USA rowing championship. Glenn was also named C-USA Coach of the Year for her efforts in helping Tennessee achieve this historic feat.Under Glenn’s tutelage, senior Laura Miller was named the C-USA rower of the year, while three other Lady Vols captured All-Conference honors.

At the 2008 NCAA Championships, the three-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Associ-ation (CRCA) South Region Coach of the Year guided the Orange and White to its first-ever appearance in a grand final, as the second var-sity eight took fifth to record UT’s best event finish at the NCAA regatta.

The team has excelled under Glenn’s watch at the sport’s largest event, the Head of the Charles Regatta, held every fall in Boston, Mass. Glenn’s entries in the Club 8+ race have captured five golds, including three consecu-tive victories in the event from 2005-07. The Championship 8+ crews have made their mark over the years as well, claiming top-10 finishes three times, and top-15 marks seven times, including a program-best fifth-place finish in 2007. In 2009, the Champ 8+ from Tennessee finished 12th out of 34 overall, placing it in the top eight among universities.

Only the second coach in Lady Vol row-ing history, Glenn has a strong track record of producing stellar student-athletes, both on the water and in the classroom. Five Lady Vols have taken home All-America accolades under Glenn’s tutelage. After the 2010 season, Laura Miller was selected as a second team CRCA All-American. Former rower Erin-Monique Shelton collected second-team honors for the third consecutive year in 2008, joining Chelsea

Pemberton as the only Tennessee rowers to earn All-America distinction three times. The 2005 squad saw Andrea Bagwell and Pemberton both named to the second team, while in 2004, Pem-berton picked up first-team honors and Kaitlin Bargreen garnered a second-team selection. In 2003, the All-American duo was flip-flopped, with Bargreen taking first-team status and Pem-berton earning a second-team selection.

Glenn’s leadership and guidance extends well beyond the realm of coaching, motivating her squad to hit the books as well. Overall, 24 Or-ange and White-clad athletes have collected 36 CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors during Glenn’s tenure. Under Glenn, the UT program has seen two of its athletes picked to back-to-back ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV squads. Most recently, Libuse Bruncvíkova’ earned a place on ESPN The Magazine Academ-ic All-District IV second-team. Bargreen also picked up second-team accolades from the Col-lege Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in both 2004 and 2005, while Kacey Montgomery garnered the honors in 2002 and 2003. Montgomery grabbed a spot on the Co-SIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team both years and received the Edsouth Lady Vol Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in 2002. Marissa Allen was presented with the Helen B. Watson Award, given to the Lady Vol athlete with the highest GPA, in both 2004 and 2005. This past season, four athletes found themselves named to the Southeastern Conference Fresh-man Academic Honor Roll, while 18 had their names added to the Academic All-SEC list. In 12 years, Glenn has coached a total of 240 SEC Academic Honor Roll members.

Prior to her move to Knoxville, Glenn served as an assistant rowing coach from 1994-98 at the University of Iowa, developing the novice program while assisting in recruiting and overall team development. She helped guide the Var-sity 4+ to a fourth-place finish at the inaugural NCAA Championships in 1997, and her novice

squad secured two Midwest Rowing Champi-onship titles, two Central Regional Champion-ship titles, a Champion International Collegiate Regatta title and a bronze medal at the U.S. Rowing Collegiate National Championship. One of her highlights at Iowa included upset victories at the Midwest Rowing Champion-ships in 1995 and 1998 over Wisconsin and Ohio State, respectively.

In 1993, she served as the assistant devel-opment coach for the U.S. Junior National Team and was tabbed the squad’s head coach the following year. Prior to her current appoint-ment on the NCAA Championship committee, Glenn also held a seat on the USRowing Board of Directors from 1996-98.

Before coaching at Iowa, she acted as a graduate assistant coach for Syracuse University while pursuing her master’s degree in public communications at the acclaimed Newhouse School of Communications. In 1991, Glenn re-ceived her master’s degree and stayed on board with the Orange as a full-time assistant rowing coach. As head of the novice program, she led SU to its best-ever performance, with her novice squads earning silver and bronze medals at the Eastern Association of Women’s Rowing Col-leges Sprints.

Glenn, a 1988 graduate in American stud-ies at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., was the school’s varsity rowing captain for two years and a varsity letterwinner from 1985-88. She won three Seven Sisters’ Cham-pionship titles and a gold medal at the Head of the Connecticut, later becoming the recipient of the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award from Mt. Holyoke.

A Clarkston, Mich., native, Glenn has coached rowers of all ages and levels. While at Syracuse, she worked with junior girls at Liv-erpool High School. Her crews won two gold medals and one silver in the 1990 Empire State Games. She also has coached competitive to elite level master’s women, ages 27 and over.

Erika Twedt joined the Tennessee women’s rowing program as an assistant coach in Au-gust 2010. Her responsibilities include assist-ing in all areas of the program with emphasis on recruiting, coxswain development, and the V4 boats.

A 2001 UT graduate, Twedt competed for the Lady Volunteers as a coxswain from 2000-01. She comes to Knoxville from Missoula, Mont., where she served as Director of Devel-opment and Alumni Relations for the Univer-sity of Montana Foundation.

A law degree recipient, Twedt earned her J.D. from the Hamline University Law School in St. Paul, Minn., in 2008. While in the North Star State, she also began her coaching career as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Boat Club’s competitive team. On her watch, the team successfully defended its first-place finish at the Head of the Charles Regatta, set-ting a new course record in the process.

“Erika brings many attributes to the table: her strong communication skills, broad experi-ence, intellect, and motivation to be the best are requirements for this position,” Glenn said. “I’m excited to help her utilize these strengths to take our fours, and our program, into new competitive territory.”

After graduating from UT in 2001, Twedt’s career path has taken her all over the world. Prior to heading up Development and Alumni Relations at Montana, she worked in Colorado and Minnesota. From 2004-05, she lived in Togo, West Africa as part of the Peace Corps, where she worked as a Community Health and AIDS Prevention Volunteer. She also studied abroad in Norway and Israel from 2006-07.

The University of Tennessee named Dave Hart vice chancellor and director of athletics on Sept. 5, 2011.

Hart, who was the director of athletics at Florida State University for 12 years from 1995-2007, previously served as Executive Director of Athletics at the Univer-sity of Alabama, where he led day-to-day op-

erations of the department.Comprehensive athletic success exemplified Hart’s

tenure as the Florida State athletic director, as a com-bined 35 ACC Championships were won by 10 different Seminole athletic programs during his tenure. Addi-tionally, the Seminole football team won nine ACC titles and appeared in four national championship games, winning the 1999 BCS National Championship with a Sugar Bowl victory over Virginia Tech.

The men’s outdoor track and field also claimed two national championships during that time, while the baseball program appeared in the College World Series five times and the softball program won nine ACC titles while playing the 2002 Women’s College World Series. During Hart’s last full year at Florida State, the Semi-noles finished 15th in the Directors’ Cup, an all-time high for the institution.

Additionally, during Hart’s three years at Alabama, the Crimson Tide claimed the 2009 BCS National Cham-pionship and the individual athletic teams posted a combined eight top three finishes nationally over the last three years. He has 20 years of service as a director of athletics, including eight at East Carolina (1987-95), an athletic program he joined in 1983 after coaching and teaching at the high school following his gradua-

tion from Alabama.“It is a privilege to be named Vice Chancellor and Di-

rector of Athletics at the University of Tennessee,” Hart said. “To be entrusted to lead one of the nation’s elite athletic programs is an exciting opportunity.

“I want to thank Chancellor Cheek, and all of those involved in this process for their confidence and com-mitment. I am anxious to demonstrate my passion for Tennessee and the Volunteer Nation.”

Highly respected as a visionary and industry leader, Hart’s career has featured service as the president of both the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athlet-ics and the Division 1A Athletics Directors’ Association. A former recipient of the Robert R. Neyland Award honor-ing lifetime achievement, Hart has also been named by his colleagues as the Athletic Director of the Year for the Southeast Region in both 2000 and 2005, one of a few se-lect individual to receive the honor multiple times.

During his 13 years at Florida State, Hart negotiated unprecedented, multi-million dollar contracts for the department totaling in excess of $175 million. He also devised and executed an extensive and comprehensive facilities master plan for athletics that eclipsed the $150 million mark. Hart initiated a multi-faceted Student De-velopment/Life Skills program for all student-athletes at FSU, an endeavor recognized nationally as a “Pro-gram of Excellence” by the Division I-A Athletics Direc-tors’ Association. He spearheaded the rewriting of the department’s mission statement to put the student-athlete at the core of athletic department priorities in its goal to build comprehensive excellence throughout all components of the department.

Hart met his wife, the former Pam Humble, while at Alabama. Pam is a 1970 graduate of The University of Alabama, and the couple has three children: Rick, who serves currently as the athletic director at UT Chatta-nooga, Jamie and Kelly. The Harts are the grandparents of five grandchildren: Trevor, Caroline, McKinley, Olivia and Kingsley.

Dr. Jimmy G. Cheek began serving as chan-cellor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville on February 1, 2009.

Early in his tenure, Dr. Cheek worked closely with the uni-versity’s constituents to develop the strategic priorities for the cam-pus, which he’s worked closely with others to advance. In response

to a challenge from Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen, the chancellor set in motion the process to bring UT Knoxville into the ranks of the top 25 public research universities within 10 years.

Central to advancing the university to Top 25 stature are goals for expanding graduate education, improv-ing retention and graduation rates, increasing research awards and expenditures and the ability to attract, sup-port and retain high caliber faculty.

He came to UT after more than 33 years at the Univer-sity of Florida where he was an award-winning professor, dean and most recently the senior vice president for agri-culture and natural resources.

Dr. Cheek earned a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education from Texas A&M University, a master’s from Lamar University (in Beaumont, Texas) and a doctorate in Interdisciplinary Education, also from Texas A&M.

He is first member of his family to attend college and has a life-long affection for learning. Much of his re-search has focused on education and learning and he’s authored or co-authored nearly 200 publications.

In his spare time, he’s a gardener and nature enthusi-ast. He and his wife, Ileen, have two grown children and two grandchildren.
