Introduction

Being able to perform quick and precise passes is one of the crucial skills in soccer. Therefore, in training programs a great emphasis must be laid on improving the players’ technical ability and avoiding mishandling the balls.

This e-book offers soccer passing drills which will help practise and develop the advanced techniques of passing and receiving, the cooperation and the foundation of teamwork. Beside some simple soccer passing drills in square, triangle and Y shape, you can find higher level, complex exercises in different shapes. Throughout these progressions accurate timing and secure performing of passes with both feet and with different techniques can be improved. These drills also focus on ball control, receiving in different angles and movements without the ball.

These exercises can be used for younger and older age-groups as well, they can easily be improved to ensure the persistant development of your players.

Goal

This soccer passing drill helps develop one touch passing, receiving and innervating basic combinations. This passing drill also focuses on soccer vision and the ability to create passing channels.

Organisation

Equipment and players are arranged as shown. Players stay in their positions all over this soccer drill. Distances must be adequate to the age group.

Description

This soccer passing drill begins from one of the players standing next to the sticks on the side. This passing drill is performed with one ball.

2. Attention - Awareness and Basic Cooperation

Goal

This soccer drill focuses on practising one touch passing, wall passing and receiving.

Organisation

This soccer passing drill contains 3 variations. Variation 1: 8 players are located with ball in the grid, 8 players are on the sides of the grid without ball. Exercise 2: 8 players are located with ball in the grid, 8 players are on the sides of the grid without ball. Variation 3: 4 players are with ball and 4 players are without ball in the grid, 8 players are on the sides of the grid without ball.

Variation 1

8 players dribble the ball in the grid, the other 8 are located on the sides of the grid. The player in possession makes a strong, low pass to one of the waiting players on the sides and runs out. The waiting player receives the ball accurately and dribbles it into the grid.

Variation 2

8 players dribble the ball in the grid, the other 8 are located on the sides of the grid. The player in possession makes a wall pass with one of the waiting players. Then he runs out of the grid.

Variation 3

4 players with ball and 4 without ball move in the grid. 8 players are located on the sides of the grid. In the right situation the player with ball passes to one of the 8 players waiting on the sides of the grid. After receiving the ball, this player plays it to one of the players without the ball. The player giving the first pass runs out of the grid, the one standing by the sideline runs into the grid.

3. Double Triangle

Goal

This soccer drill focuses on practising passing, receiving and developing orientation.

Organisation

Create two triangles as shown. Players are arranged as shown. Players work in their own triangle with 1 ball. Players change their positions after their passes.

Description

The two Players A start this soccer passing drill at the same time. After passing the ball they follow it and change their positions. Players work with two touches: receiving and passing. Players should carry out the task to both directions.

4. Combinations and Complex Cooperation

Goal

This soccer passing drill emphasises passing accuracy, cooperation, practising combinations and dribbling.

Organisation

Mark five positions with three cones and two sticks. In this soccer drill players change their positions continuously in alphabetical order. This passing drill is performed to both sides by turns. Place two players to Positions B and one-one player to positions C.

Description

This soccer drill always begins from Position A. Players start the soccer exercises by turns to both sides in position A. Take care of extra balls and restart the soccer drill at the right time from Position A.

Soccer Passing Drill 3

Cooperation between two players in Position B. One of the players asks for the ball and moves towards Player A. Player A passes to him but the player who advances lets the ball to the player behind him. Second Player in Position B lays back the ball to Player A who plays the first in Position B. First player receives the ball and dribbles around the stick at speed and passes to the other sided player in Position C who dribbles back to the starting position at speed.

Cooperation between two players in Position B. One of the players asks for the ball and moves towards Player A. Player A passes to him and the player who advances lets the ball to the player behind him. Second Player in Position B lays back the ball to Player A who plays the first in Position B. 5. Timing and Harmonization

Goal

Organisation

Players and equipment are arranged as shown. 8 players take part in this soccer passing drill. Duration: 2 minutes. Change: P1-P2-P5-P6 and P3-P4-P7-P8 change continuously. Players perform this soccer passing exercises to both directions.

Description

P1 and P3 start this soccer passing exercise at the same time. Players perform the exercise parallel with 2 balls.

P1 dribbles the ball to the red cone and makes a sharp, low pass to P4. Then P1 moves towards P2 and combines directly with him. P2 dribbles the ball a few meters and passes to the next player. Then the movement continues.

P1 dribbles the ball to the red cone and makes a sharp, long pass to P4. Then P1 moves towards P2 to make a passive defending against him. P2 plays the ball (which he gets from P3) to P5 and moves towards him. P5 lays the ball off with one touch to P2 who dribbles a few meters and passes the ball back to P5. Then the movement continues.

6. Ball Control and Soccer Vision

Goal

This soccer passing drill focuses on developing basic passing and receiving skills. This soccer drill also develops orientation, close control and soccer vision.

Organisation

10 sticks and 5 big cones are placed about 8-10 meters apart as shown. Players change their positions continuously. Mark the players with different colored vests to make orientation easier as shown.

Description

Players pass the ball to each other diagonally in the same color and they change their positions following their passes. Last players dribble the ball back to the starting positions. This soccer drill starts with two balls at the same time. Passes must be performed without collision of the balls.

To raise the difficulty of the task place players to the big cones as shown. Three players start the task at the same time. Players in the middle receive the ball close to the big cones in 180 degrees. Last player dribbles back to the starting position. Try to avoid collision of the balls and players.

7. Twin Squares

Goal

This soccer drill emphasises developing one touch passing and preparing deep passes.

Organisation

Create two 8x8 meters rhombuses 4 meters apart. Place players to the cones. In the two ends of the area place two or more players with ball. Changing position is

continuous in alphabetical order.

Soccer Passing Exercise 1

Player A starts the task with a wide pass to player B who lays it back to A. Then A gives a deep pass to Player C who lays it off to Player D. When A passes the ball to C, D performs a counter movement. When D gets the ball from C takes it forward with a dynamic dribbling. After a short dribbling D forwards the ball to E. Then the game is repeated on the other side. Players take turns in alphabetical order.

Soccer Passing Exercise 2

Player A starts with a wide pass to Player B who receives the ball and forwards it to Player C who lays it back to Player A. Player A makes Player D jump out. When Player C lays the ball back to A Player D performs a dynamic counter movement. Player D dribbles the ball and forwards it to Player E. The progression is the same in the other side.

Description

The players practise strong and weak passes and wall passes. The exercise starts when Player 'A' plays the ball to Player 'B'. Player 'B' passes it back with one touch to Player 'A'. Player 'A' makes a strong pass to Player 'C'. Player 'C' receives the ball and dribbles to the starting position.

14. Move to Get the Attacking Diagonal Pass

Goal

This soccer passing drill emphasises developing weight and timing of passes, one touch passing. This soccer drill also focuses on developing and practising diagonal movements and cooperation between players.

Organisation

Set up two 5-meter triangles 10 meters apart. Players are

arranged as shown. Players work with one ball.

Description

P1 starts this soccer drill with a strong pass (1) to P2 who lays the ball back (2) to P1. P2 moves in angle behind the cone and gets the ball back (3) from P1. At the moment P2 approaches, P3 moves farther from P2 and opens space to keep the distance between them. P3 accelerates in space to the front of the ball and gets the pass from P2. P3 dribbles towards and passes to P4. The progression is the same at the other triangle. Players change their positions continuously.

Goal

This soccer drill focuses on developing one touch passing, wall passing, supporting movements without ball and cooperation between two players.

Organisation

Set up two 5-meter triangles about 10 meters apart as shown. Place the players into the area as shown. Players

change their positions continuously.

Description

P1 starts this soccer drill with a sharp pass to P2 who lays it back. P1 forwards to P3, follows the ball and makes passive defending movements. After the pass from P1 to P3, P2 supports to make a wall pass with P3. P3 gets the ball back from P2 and dribbles towards and passes to P4. The progression is the same in the other side.
