All you need are these rules, a piece of paper (preferably of the graph variety ), a pen and a bunch of six sided dice. The dungeon is made up of a grid of squares, 9 squares wide and 10 rows deep. There are additional start and end squares in the middle column as shown in figure 1. The objective is to move from the Start square up through the levels of the Dungeon and into the End square where the Big Bad Boss Monster lives and to finally defeat it. Failure to defeat the Big Bad Boss Monster means you have lost. You move one square at a time, and as you move into each square you determine what is in that square and deal with it. You start the game with 17 Health, 1 Attack Die and 1 Defence Die, these will be explained later under Fighting. Simply put, if your Health reaches 0 you’re dead and have lost. You roll the Attack Dice when you Attack and roll the Defence Dice when a monster hits you. TURN SEQUENCE Pick next square and move into it. Roll to determine room contents. If room contains Treasure add it to your Treasure score. If room contains Potion add it to your Potion count. If room contains a Monster, fight to the Death. Take any or all Potions you’ve collected. Exchange any Treasure for Items. Pick next square The rules for picking the next square are very simple. The next square must be adjacent (this includes the immediate diagonals) and must not be a square you’ve already visited. Be careful not to block yourself from getting into End square, because if you do you’ve lost! Here’s a sample Dungeon that’s partially complete (figure 2). As each room is entered it’s marked with a circle, and a line links it to the last room, by doing this you can see the route you’ve taken and wont get mixed up with which is the current room. Note that you can return to previous dungeon levels. Determine room contents Each Square is on a “Level”. When you enter a room roll a die and consult the appropriate Level table. Room contains Treasure Add 1 to your Treasure count. Room contains Potion Add 1 to your Potion count. Room contains a Monster There is a monster so you must fight for your life. See the Fighting section below. Take any or all Potions At this stage you can take a breather, a chance to recover. You may use 1 or more Potions that you have collected. For each potion you use up, reduce your potion count by 1 and increase your Health by 1. Wipro EarthianThe national level paper presentation contest conducted by Wipro was won jointlyby two teams from IIMK. While one team had PGP participants Sivaharsh S,Raj B, Paresh M, Praveen S and Monica P and was mentored by Prof. BalooniKulbhushan, the second team had FPM participants - Krishnadas, SupriyaNambiar and Ram Kumar Dhurkari and was mentored by Prof. RadhakrishnaPillai. The teams successfully created green ideas for problems facing today’sworld. Sivaharsh’s team created a waste management plan for Kerala.Krishnadas’s team has a green computing solution for IIMK computer centre.

There are no consecutive three months in the Indian Institute of Management,Kozhikode, which are not holistic. Life here entails a spruced balance with its mixof learning, entertainment, responsibilities and values. The last three months werein no way a deviation from this tradition. The voice of IIMK echoed far and widethrough its annual cultural program, ‘Echoes-2012’, which has always been aplatform to perfect the burgeoning talents from all over the country. Over thesame weekend, the alumni of the institute, the pride and the brand ambassadors ofIIMK, met here as a part of Nostalgia-2012. The seniors organized a careerworkshop for the juniors, thus proving their commitment towards their Alma Mater.The Social Service Group here never rests. In the last few months, it has beenactively involved in a varied range of activities like Waste Management Solutionfor Calicut and the Mentorship program for the students, among others.

Paving our way more towards diversity and equality, the institute also organizedand successfully executed an ‘HR summit’, with the very interesting theme of ‘Dowomen make better HR managers?’. The campus was honored by the visits ofseveral luminaries including Dr. ShashiTharoor, Member of the Parliament, Mr.M.D. Ramesh, President and Regional head of Olam International and Mr. MatthewK. Bech, Consul for Economic and Political Affairs, US Consulate General, amongothers. The reverberant campus was even livelier with a food festival, the RepublicDay celebrations, Team Theatrix performance and a lot more.

This is just a sneak-peak into the latest edition of the IIMK Newsletter, which theteam IIMK proudly presents. The real picture is much bigger indeed. With theacademic year for PGP-14 coming to an end we bring out our March Edition ofthe Newsletter hoping to spread the values , virtues and activities of our Institute.

As we expand the system,we need to ensure that IIMKozhikode is the benchmarkfor younger institutions. Infact, institutes like this needto be constantlystrengthened so that theycan easily adapt to thecompetitive and constantlychanging global scenario.

Fourteenth Annual Convocation - March 17, 2012

On the 17th of March 2012 IIM Kozhikodecelebrated its convocation with an overwhelmingfelicitation of 310 of the 14th batch of PGPstudents and 133 ePGP students. The ceremonywas chaired by Shri E. Ahamed, the Honourableminster of State for External Affairs and HumanResource Development and blessed by thedignitaries, A.C. Muthiah, Chairman of theBoard of Governors, Mr. Resul Pookutty,Academy award winner and the Director, IIMKProf. DebashisChatterjee.

Shri. Ahmed started his convocation address by extendinghis heartiest congratulations to the graduating students,especially to those who have received awards and medalsand the proud parents.

The Honourable Minister stressed upon the importance ofhaving more world class educational institutions in thecountry today, when the economy has successfully transitedto higher growth rates, thanks to the cumulative impact ofeconomic reforms implemented over the past several years.To sustain this growth, we need an expanded supply ofhighly skilled individuals capable of giving us thecompetitive edge.

He shared a brief account of the initiatives of the CentralGovernment in higher education. Several institutions havebeen set up or are being set up – including 8 Indian Institutesof Technology (IITs), 7 Indian Institutes of Management(IIMs), 10 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 20Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), 16Central Universities in hitherto uncovered States, 14 moreCentral Universities aiming at world class standards, threeIndian Institutes of Science Education and Research(IISERs), and two Schools of Planning and Architecture(SPAs). Besides, assistance will be provided to set up 600polytechnics, including 300 through the public-privatepartnership mode.

“My dear friends, always play to win. Winning is not aboutmaking the other person lose. It is about stretching yourselfto your own limits. Once so stretched, you will realize thetrue extent of your potential. Ultimately, transformation isabout reaching and utilizing not only your potential butthose of others who work with you. Do not be afraid toadmit your ignorance. While it is important to project whatwe are good at, we must be equally candid about areas wedo not know enough about. The seeds of learning weresown by the great philosopher Socrates who said “As forme, all I know is that I know nothing”. Today, knowledgeis multiplying at such a rapid rate that it is impossible foranyone to know everything. Pursue excellence in whateveryou do. Excellence cannot be forced through a processnor guaranteed by a certificate. It comes from an allconsuming passion to do one’s best. It needs an eye forthe smallest of details. When differences become small, itis the small things that make the difference. Criticismmay actually be an expression of faith in us rather than aput down. We must learn to take criticism, if any,constructively because it will show us what more we canlearn.”

Shri Ahmed concluded his address quoting Albert Einstein-“Imagination is more important than knowledge.Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world”,and wishing the graduating students to choose a professionthat will be driven by inquisitiveness and curiosity leadingto the fulfillment of all their dreams whilst using their talent,competence and energy for creating peace and happinessfor the nation.

Dr. A.C.Muthiah, the Chairman, IIMK BOG welcomedthe Chief Guest and other dignitaries. In his Chairman’sspeech, he said, “Education is everywhere with superficialvariance but quality of education imparted from the premierinstitutes like IIMs redefines and restructures educationitself. The rigour in learning makes them better citizensand better leaders. The unique quality of learning in IIMsdepends on the academic freedom the institutes enjoy.

Globalization has redefined the quality of education, foreignuniversities step into the Indian soil with more operationalas well as academic freedom. IIMs need more operationaland academic freedom at this onset of emerging academicscenario.”

“We are committed to humanity; hence Business Ethics isthe integral part of studies. We are committed to the motherearth and the universe as a whole; hence we thinkEnvironment Management inevitable for our students. Thenagain, top priority is accorded to research. It is noteworthythat all faculty members engage themselves in scholarlyresearch activities.”

“During the year 2011-12, IIMK has entered intoInternational Exchange collaboration with ESSCA Franceand Hungary, ISCTE Portugal, Abu Dhabi University, AbuDhabi, Leeds University Business School in UK and IESEGin France. Currently IIMK has collaborations with eighteenbusiness schools all over the world.”

“We were pioneer in interactive distance learning. Now isheartening to mention that the Institute is seriouslyconsidering to set up a satellite campus in Kochi to startpost-graduate programmes for executives from the nextacademic year.”

“Over the years, the Institute’s Library and InformationCentre has registered significant progress and has broughtworldwide recognition and laurels to the Institute. IIMK isalso one of the few Centres for Development of DigitalLibraries in the world and is a leader in the country.Advanced digital library training programmes conductedby the institute include Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, theAfrican Union Countries and the Philippines in addition tothe hundreds of programmes offered in India.

The Chairman concluded his lauded student communityfor organizing various extra curricular and cultural

programmes and the contributions of Alumni for the same.He pointed out the contribution of IIMK to the Societyby enrolling over 36% women students in the PGPprogramme. He ended his speech recalling the saying ofB. R. Ambedkar, “I measure the progress of a communityby the degree of progress which women have achieved”.

Mr. Resul Pookuttynarrated his experiencesand spoke towards anempowered andacademically holisticsociety. He brought outthe importance of hardwork and untiring effortsin attaining ones goal.

Professor Debashis Chatterjee after expressing hisgratitude to the Chief Guest Shri E. Ahamed, Hon’bleMinister of State for External Affairs and Human ResourceDevelopment, welcomed the Guest of Honour Shri. ResulPookutty, the Sultan of Sound and Academy AwardWinner, Dr. A. C. Muthiah, Chairman, IIMK Board ofGovernors; the Eminent Members of IIM KozhikodeSociety and Board of Governors; the Parents of theGraduating Students; the Distinguished Invitees; theMedia friends; the Faculty and Colleagues inAdministration, the Graduating Students and their parentsand family.

Prof. Chatterjee presented very briefly some ofachievements of IIMK in the past year.

“Our identity as a centerof excellence in highereducation has beenreinforced by a verysignificant shift inresearch output. Ourfaculties have had with atleast three world classresearch papers publishedin peer reviewed

international journals. Our three international conferenceson ‘FLEXIBLE SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT,INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, SYSTEMS ANDMANAGEMENT, PRACTICAL WISDOM ANDMANAGEMENT FROM INDIAN SPIRITUALTRADITIONS’ drew professors and participants fromNASA, HARVARD UNIVERSITY, YALE UNIVERSITYand host of prominent local and global institutions. Ourfaculty earned us laurels as Emerging Scholar by theAcademy of Marketing Science and Fellow of Universityof Tokyo and National University of Singapore. This yearIIMK led 28 Vice Chancellors of Universities and

Directors of IITs and IIMs to Yale University for a 2 weeksAcademic Leadership Workshop”.

“Our executive education portfolio grew by 135% last year.One of the high points of this year was the arrival of Kerala’sChief Minister Mr. Ooman Chandy and his entire cabinetas students in our campus. They paid a tuition fee of Rs.25, 000 each to attend our classes on self governance,leadership and change. We have heard, some of ourrecommendations have become part of State Policy”.

“IIMK has set up the first ever museum of Indian businesshistory. The museum accommodates business relatedhistorical artifacts, objects, sculptures, models,photographs, and documents, illustrations. Housed in athree-storey Library building with an area of 20,000 sq. ft,the museum facilitates a ‘walking tour’ through the annalsof the history of Indian business and commerce, startingfrom the early days of small spices trade with the Arabsand European countries centuries ago, to the birth andgrowth of large-size corporate business houses. TheMuseum is a step toward our goal of globalizing Indianthought”.

“In conclusion, I wish to say that IIMK has grownexponentially in both time and space. We are poised to begina new Chapter by opening a new program in Kochi. Weare a 21st century ‘Gurukul’ for a new generation of India.You are that generation that is seeing people like yourselveswin the World Cup and the Oscars. This is a generationthat feels suffocated by the hierarchy of corruption and theanarchy of deprivation. You have no time to be boggeddown by the dark side of India’s history because you arebusy making history for the country. Strive for excellenceas Arjuna has done. Excellence is about caring more thanothers think is wise. It is about risking more than othersthink is safe. Excellence is about dreaming more than othersthink is practical and achieving more than others think ispossible. There is an Arjuna inside each one of you. Arjunais in the might of your youthful energy and the purity ofyour purpose. There is a corporate Kurukshetra out herewhere you are now called to do battle for market share,mindshare and hopefully heart share. All I can say by wayof farewell is Arise Arjuna! Arise to fight for a just causeand Rise to your own magnificence!”

Gold Medal Winners

Arjun MohanArjun Mohan has four years of work experience in VLSIand EDA industries before joining IIMK. After graduatingfrom National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC)Electrical & Electronics Department, he had two stints inRambus Chip Technologies and Mentor Graphics Sales and

Consulting. He hails from Kannur, a small town north toKozhikode and has had all his education in Malabar regionof North Kerala.

On campus, Arjun was part of the student placementscommittee and was the student editor of IIMK Newsletter.Arjun had tried his hands at entrepreneurship also andmanages an education business based out of Bangalore.He has used his exposure in education to design careercounselling modules which were given to students in andaround Kozhikode under the banner of SSG careercounselling workshops. Similar modules were deliveredby Arjun under Shikssha, an educational workshop duringBackwaters.

Arjun did his summer internship at HSBC bank and hewas awarded a PPO from HSBC corporate banking divisionfor his project at the company. Arjun has his final placementin TAS (Tata Administrative Services) and is lookingforward to joining the leadership program in June.

Sneha ChoudharySneha is an engineer from VTU Belgaum and worked for Oracle Solutions beforejoining IIMK. She was an active member of the student council and a defaultpresence in all programs conducted by the institute. Be it Calicut Marathon,Echoes, Industry talks or any student council event, Sneha is always there tolead from the front.

Sneha interned with Johnson & Johnson Medical Care and received her finalplacements at Deloitte Consulting. Sneha is interested in Marketing and GeneralManagement.

Best Scholastic Performance

Madhukar AnandMaddy is a pass out of Manipal Institute of Technology. Presently a resident ofDelhi and originally a native of Bihar, Maddy scored the highest CGPA in IIMK.Before joining IIMK, Maddy worked for Freescale Semiconductors for 34 monthsin the automotive division. He interned with Mahindra group and was awarded aPPO in Mahindra Strategy Office.

On campus, Maddy was a member of Madcom (Merchandizing and DesignCommittee) and was one of the organizers of the HR Summit, the newlyconceptualized conclave which aims at making IIMK a Human Resources andOrganizational Behavioural powerhouse. Maddy has done marketing and strategyprojects across sectors for companies like E&Y, Vimal etc. His project on newproduct launch strategy for a Agro based company was highly appreciated.

Nitin Mukesh (EPGP 02)Nitin Mukesh is ProgramDirector in SAP LabsIndia heading SAPCarbon Impact line ofbusiness.

Nitin has about 14 yearsof IT industry experience(including about 12 yearsin SAP) working in andleading cross functionaland cross location teamsextensively on SAP projects and products.

Nitin did his B.E. in Electronics & Communications fromC.R. State College of Engineering, Murthal with Honorsin 1998.

Nitin was born and brought up in Roorkee. He is marriedto Ritu for 10 years and have 2 kids (a daughter and a son).

Nitin’s interviews have been published in Times of Indiaand Fortune Magazine and have represented SAP at variousInternal & External forums (Analyst Meets, CIIConferences). Nitin has been guest speaker in variousManagement Institutes (IMI New Delhi, CMR Bangalore).

Shipra AgarwalShipra Agarwal is an engineering graduate from ThaparUniversity. She has 20 months of experience in AtrentaIndia.

Shipra won many inter college contests at IIMK, the biggestof which were Tata Business Leadership and JPMC Deal.While her team came second at IIMK for TBLA, she wasone of the national winners for JPMC Deal. Shipra receiveda PPO as a result of her efforts in Deal and received finalplacements in Deutsche Bank Corporate Finance.

Tina GuptaTina Gupta is a commerce graduate from Sriram Collegeof Commerce, Commerce University of Delhi. Beforecoming down to IIMK, she worked as financial analystwith Inductis India for 23 months.

Tina was consistently in top 3 throughout her studies atIIMK and had been to European Business School as partof foreign exchange from IIMK. Tina interned withDeutsche Bank and was awarded a PPO for her project.

Jomon P Jose (EPGP 02)Jomon P Jose is currently working as Senior Manager,Quality Assurance at Oracle Solution Services India PrivateLimited. Prior to joining Oracle, he was associated withWestern India Cottons, Kannur as Industrial Engineer. Hehas over 17 years of professional experience spanningacross IT and Manufacturing sectors.

Jomon was born in 1973 as the eldest son of Mary andJoseph Punchatharappel in Kannur, Kerala. He completedhis Secondary schooling from St. Joseph’s High SchoolVayattuparamba in 1988 and was a recipient of NationalMerit Scholarship. After finishing Pre-Degree fromNirmalagiri College, Koothuparamba, he did B-Tech inIndustrial Engineering from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar NationalInstitute of Technology, Jalandhar in 1994.

He lives in Bangalore with his wife, Jyolsna Agnes Joseand children, Megha and Mehul.

The third lecture in CK Prahalad memorial lectureseries was delivered by Theodre Roosevelt Malloch,(Research Professor, Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA).

Coimbatore Krishnarao Prahalad was the Paul and RuthMcCracken Distinguished University Professor ofCorporate Strategy at the Stephen M. Ross School ofBusiness in the University of Michigan. Prahalad authoreda number of well-known works in corporate strategyincluding “The Core Competence of the Corporation”(Harvard Business Review, May-June, 1990), “Competingfor the Future” (with Gary Hamel), 1994, “The Future ofCompetition,” (with Venkat Ramaswamy), 2004. But, “TheFortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid”, riding on anexpression first used by Franklin Roosevelt, made a biggersplash than any before in the age of the internet andmicrofinance.

The impact of Prahalad’s management theories andtrajectories can be seen and felt in many areas. Nowhere isit more visible than in Indian and developing world stores.

His theory affected many Indian and developing world retailoutlets. It was Prahalad’s proposition that businesses stopthinking of the poor as victims and instead start seeing themas value-demanding consumers that drove companies suchas Hindustan Lever and Godrej to come out with ultra-small sachets of everything from shampoo to gutka sparkingoff a retail revolution.

Professor Malloch worked with Prahalad in areas ofemerging markets, corporate governance, business ethicsand strategy and regarded him as one of the best thinkerswho could steer companies to both boost profits and at thesame time benefit the poor–by crafting products fordisenfranchised and forgotten customer bases. His venturePraja Inc served as a test bed for various management fieldsas it allowed common people to access information withoutrestriction.

Regarded as one among the top ten management thinkersin every major survey for over ten years, recipient of

prestigious Padma Bhushan (2009) and Herbert SimonAward by the László College for Advanced Studies (2009)he was a champion of Indian manufacturing and believedin their ability to innovate and compete.

A great teacher, thinker, visionary and a patriot he had anenormous ability to give an idea (so big and powerful),and logically link the idea, break it down and explain howit could be done.

In addition to his huge belief in India and its rich spiritualtraditions, he held the view that entrepreneurs held the keyto prosperity. He once said, “India has got independence,but we haven’t got freedom. Just like the leaders who foughtfor independence, entrepreneurs are the new freedomfighters”. His vision of India at 75 which brought aboutinterdependence of education, healthcare, innovation,manufacturing and services in an integrated way alsoreinforces his belief of metamorphosis of India into adeveloped country by fostering culture of innovation atevery level of society.

He concluded the session by stating that Prahalad ‘one ofthe greatest human beings, a real practioner of wisdom,the world has known in our own times’ drawing parallelsfrom the works of Shankaracharya, Kabir,Vinobha Bhave,Upanishads and Bhagwad Gita, attained the goal of his lifeand that his gift to India, to corporations, to strategy and tothe future of the world was indeed unprecedented.

Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director- IIM Kozhikode, kick started Day Oneby welcoming the dignitaries, speakersand the participants. In his welcomeaddress he referred to women’sdifferent thought and knowledge as aresult of the ‘way women learnt’ ratherthan any physical or biologicalconditions. He also spoke highly ofsome illustrious women leaders whoare paving a new way in academia,such as Harvard’s President DrewFaust and Susan Hockfield of MIT.

Infosys, the chief guest for the evening,expressed his shock at the appallinginfant mortality rate among femalechildren in India. He listed the qualitiesessential to a good HR manager whichinvolved people-centric thinking andskills. He further elaborated oninitiatives in Infosys to encourage andcreate an inclusive workplace for thewomen employees.

Dr. Pallab Bandyopadhyay, Director-Human resources for Citrix, whoincluded lots of poetry in his key noteaddress called attention to the currentHR issues and presented researchevidence that women aretransformational along with beinginspirational and ethical. He opinedthat women play the moral and moralcompass as a manager.

Later in the evening, the paneldiscussion moderated by Prof.Unnikrishnan Nair, saw Mr. AbhayKapoor, VP-HR, Ernst and Young andMs. Gitika Shiv, GM-HR, NTPCemphatically place their views on‘Global trends in growth andchallenges of Women HR leaders’.

Day Two commenced with a sessionon “Gender Stereotyping in HR”followed by one centred around “TheRoadmap to success in HR: DoesGender really matter?”

Mr. Rajesh Nair, Vice-President-Head, Markets and Pursuits, Ernst &Young, began the day with his talk onthe genesis of gender stereotypes. Hereminded the audience that genderroles were formed much before theadvent of technology and commerce.He was optimistic in his views that jobswere becoming more gender agnostictoday which will, hopefully, lead to thebreaking of stereotypes in the societyin the near future.

Ms. Simin Askari, Sr. Vice-President-Human Resources, ApolloInternational Ltd., brought theaudience’s attention towards the largenumber of woman-applicants for HRroles at the entry level and their near-absence in the higher levels oforganizational hierarchy. She went onto explain that most men enter thecorporate arena through marketing,finance or operations and make the

Mr. M.S. Sreekumar, Associate Vice-President-Human Resources atMuthoot Capital Services Ltd. andPresident-National HRD NetworkCochin Chapter, carried the sessionforward with his views on socialconventions, pressures andexpectations faced by women. He saysIndia is a ‘paradox of thoughts’. Withthe rise of market-dictates, there is afeeling that men are more equipped towage the market war. Women can enterthe warzone only when they developtheir own individual sense of identity,clearly define their job and family rolesand know their strengths.

Ms. Garvita Chaturvedi, ChiefManager – Compensation andBenefits, Met-Life Insurance Co., kickstarted the post-tea session with a smallgroup exercise. She went on toillustrate various factors of the femalepsyche that may limit her from

achieving success. She stressed that,while it is important for one to notboast about one’s achievements, oneshould not remain too modest. Mostwomen are alright with workingwithout recognition and maintaining abackseat. The solution lies in changingthis attitude within themselves and notexternal social factors.

Mr. Anurag Srivastava, CEO, HRNext, started his talk with an indicationof how the HR area is often perceivedas a ‘soft career’ for men. HR is viewedas an employee-advocacy role insteadof a bottom-line driven role. Heemphasized that HR professionalsshould lead from front-end. Hepersonally does not believe in genderdifferences but believes there arequalities that both sexes can imbibefrom each other. Mr. Srivastavaspecially lauded IIM Kozhikode for itsefforts towards breaking the genderbarrier.

Mr. Nilanka Chatterjee, GeneralManager-HR (Training &Development) of United Spirits

Limited, opened his talk with areference to Swami Vivekananda’sideas. Swami Vivekananda viewedwomen as the prime ‘Shakti’ of theworld and the root of existence. Mr.Chatterjee correlated this with thepresent day requirement for women totake up productive roles. Heemphasized on the need to strivetowards leadership, knowledgeretention, leveraging technology,connecting and engagement andjustified the influence women can havein this direction.

The event closed with a vote of thanksby the second year student at IIMK andEvent Manager, Mr. Mani Kansal. TheFaculty conveners Prof. ManoranjanDhal and Prof. Manish Kumar receivedpositive feedback on the conduct of theevent from the speakers and delegatesat the event and other faculty whoattended the Summit. They henceforthencouraged and motivated theorganizing team to carry on suchactivities on a regular basis and holdthe flag of IIMK high.

Mr. Saharasri Subrata Roy, Chairmanand Managing Director of Saharagroup delivered a special lecture underIIMK’s Leadership series. He began

IIM Kozhikode signed an Agreement of Cooperation withLeeds University Business School, United Kingdom. TheMoU was signed by Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Directorof IIMK and Prof. Mark Smelik, Associate Dean (ExternalRelations) of Leeds University Business School, UK. Thisagreement enables both the institutions to carry out thefollowing activities:

� Exchange of students;

� Exchange of faculty members; and

� Collaborative research on contemporarymanagement issues.

Prof. Peter Moizer Dean of Leeds University BusinessSchool and Mr. Marc Smelik, Associate Dean - ExternalRelations will be visiting IIMK on 15th and 16th of March2012 to discuss about various activities of collaborationbetween both the schools. International Symposium onPractical Wisdom for Management from the

Indian Spiritual Traditions

IIM Kozhikode has always taken the lead in revolutionizingmanagement, be it gender diversity at workplace, socialsensitivity and inclusive growth or sustainabledevelopment. Continuing in a similar vein and takinganother step forward in this direction with the aim of‘Globalizing Indian Thought’, IIM Kozhikode hosted aninternational symposium on ‘Practical Wisdom forManagement from the Indian Spiritual Traditions’ on 12thand 13th January, 2012. The symposium was held incollaboration with the Yale University, The Academy ofBusiness in Society (EABIS), European Foundation forManagement Development (EFMD) and ConsciousCapitalism Institute.

This was the third of series of conferences organised byEABIS (The Academy of Business in Society) and YaleUniversity on practical wisdom for management from theworld’s spiritual and philosophical traditions, addressing

the central question: “How can we bring back the value ofwisdom in management and management education?” Theconferences were, on each occasion, followed by a call forpapers, a special issue of The Journal of ManagementDevelopment and a book series.

Aimed at bringing together philosophers, theologians,management scholars and business leaders to engage inreflection and dialogue and to find new grounding itencompassed a delectable mix of research papers , spanninginvited research papers on topics such as “The Role ofFaith-based Wisdom in Business Decision-Making”, “TheImpact of Religion on Business Decision-Making”, “Arthaand Globalization”, “Business Ethics in Indian ReligiousTraditions”, “Business in Indian Religious Traditions”,“Management Practices in Indian Religious Traditions”,“Leadership in Indian Religious Traditions”, “Economicsin Indian Religious Traditions”, “Marketing Practices in

of Minneapolis, USA, followed by a conference on Chinesetradition held in June 2010 . Between now and 2013,conferences on the Buddhist, Chinese, Hindu, Islamic,Jewish, Jain and Shinto traditions will be staged aroundthe world, concluding with a comparative conference atYale University in 2013.

As the birthplace of four major spiritual traditions, Indiahas played a uniquely important role in the evolution ofhuman spirituality and this conference was aimed to explorethe nature and contemporary relevance of the Indianwisdom, traditions for management and managementeducation. “Leaders transform by creating new meaningsfor old forms and India, and Indian Management Thoughthas a lot to contribute to the world in this regard” saidProf. Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode.

This symposium was addressed by world-renowned thoughtleaders like Prof Ted Malloch from Yale, Prof. SrinivasanPillay, Faculty of Psychiatry Harvard Medical School, Prof.Prasad Kaipa from ISB India, Prof. Rajendra Sisodia fromBentley University along with talks by other academiciansand practitioners. It brought together the world’s finestminds to examine how Indian spiritual traditions can berepositioned for managing the world in the 21st century.

The event involved discussions on how Indian spiritualtraditions can impact, influence and address issues such asDecision Making, Ethics, Management Practices,Leadership, Marketing and Investment Practices in thecurrent business world’s scenario.

The Role of Practical Wisdom in the

Modern World

Practical Wisdom rooted in religious and spiritual traditionsplays an important role in the context of modern society.In many ways, traditions of practical wisdom still serve asa palimpsest of contemporary cultures. Veiled butnevertheless influential, they inspire education and civicculture, framing decisions even in social and economicorganizations that are reluctant or even hostile againstexplicit religion.

In the context of the globalized markets of the 21st century,the social importance of ‘practical wisdom’ may evenincrease. As legal institutions based on national legislaturesno longer expand their regulatory power, the orientatingforce of overarching notions of practical wisdom mayenable cooperation even in contexts where no common legalrules are available. This holds especially true for businesslife, in which common sense and professional ethics havealways played an important role.

Religious notions of practical wisdom, however, are stillan academically unfathomed area. Modern philosophersand ethicists have tried to elaborate normative constructswhich should serve as a rational substitute in a post-religious era. However, as the artificial language‘Esperanto’ could never displace the real historic languagesof people, even modern normative concepts like the onesproposed in recent years will never displace the orientatingforces that religion and spiritual concepts embody. Bringingthese concepts to light again and illustrating them in theirregulating influence on business practices in certain culturaland historic contexts is indeed an important challenge forcontemporary academic research.

Initiated in 2009 the first edition of the series was based onChristian tradition organized by the Catholic University ofEichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany and St. Thomas University

‘white screens’ where images come and go without leavingan imprint. He distinguished between ‘wish’ and ‘will’:the former being a weak instinct, while the latter is a strongintention of action.

Prasad Kaipa ( Indian School of Business, Hyderabad,India) highlighted that with increasing diversity,interdependence, speed, scarcity and ambiguity, businessleaders in the 21st century have shown increasing difficultyin making meaningful decisions that give them and theirorganizations sustainable growth opportunities. He said“the teachings of The Mahabharata describe many difficultpredicaments that leaders experienced and explain thedecision logic that will help resolving the dilemmas

M.K. Chauhan of Mahendra and Young KnowledgeFoundation pointed out society’s negative perception ofbusiness. He emphasised on the shift towards the triplebottom line: ‘Environment, Finance and Society’.According to him, good governance involves ‘transparency,accountability and equanimity’.

Snehal Shah, founder and CEO, i2V solutions; andProfessor at School of Inspired Leadership, delved intounderstanding yogic philosophy through the Panchakoshaframework and its application to organisational layers.She took the audience through the five layers of

successfully and in turn lead effectively, could be adaptedon various business scenarios to help leaders make wisedecisions and take meaningful actions”. Patrick Nickisch(Religions Initiative Representative to the United Nations,Germany) spoke about the personal life management asfound in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita spoken on thebattle field of Kurukshetra highlighting how such personalleadership takes proper responsibility for one’ actions anddoes translate into a wider sense of taking care and hencecontributes to the attitude found in Corporate SocialResponsibility. He said “one contribution the Gita canmake to management studies is its paradigm ofdistinguishing between the ego, intelligence, mind and body.Further, seeing society as an integrated whole teaches usfor management practices that we are more care-takers ofthe earth and its resources. Along these lines, the teachingsof the Gita can be used as guidelines both for leading a

Speakers were many and so were learnings for futuremanagers. The biggest learning was that there’s no escapingthat doing good is good for the corporate world — and thatspirituality could serve as a guiding light in that direction.A much needed lesson in 21 st century where corporatehas become synonymous to greed and relentless profitmaximisation , plagued the world by scams, frauds andculmination of privatization of profits and socialization oflosses , this was indeed a much awaited redemption call byrediscovering our roots!

Echoes – the annual culturalfestival of IIM-Kozhikodewhich became a successfulphenomenon a year backbecame a bigger and grandersuccess this year. The festivaltook place over a span of 3days from the 13th of Januaryto the 15th of January , 2012and covered hugely popularevents and stage shows. Theentire festival is arranged andorganised by the CulturalCommittee of the institutealong with necessary helpfrom the executive committeeof volunteers who participatefor the organising of theshows and other events.

The thematic ‘Big Bang’ festivallaunched off with the event K-Nitewhich included stage performancesboth prepared and impromptu by thestudents of IIM-K. Apart from the popular events andshows, Echoes also prepared andconducted interesting workshops onSalsa , Video Making and Photographyall conducted and moderated byexperts in the related fields who cameall the way down to our campus tomake our events successful.

Echoes like last year also managed toconduct various informal events for theenjoyment of the students whichincluded the ever popular DumbCharades , LAN computer gamingCompetition , Treasure Hunt and so on.A popular number of online eventswere also hosted to enable participantsfrom outside the campus to take partin them and participate in ‘Echoes’.

The Indian Institute ofManagement Kozhikode (IIMK)played host to Dr. ShashiTharoor who addressed thestudents as a part of the‘Leadership Series onGlobalising Indian Thought’.This session was organised bythe Industry Interaction Cell ofIIM Kozhikode, whichspearheads the student’srelations with the industry.

Dr. Tharoor, Member of Parliament,had a highly interactive session withthe students of IIM Kozhikode. Asmultifaceted personality with vastexperience in international andnational affairs, Mr. Tharoor had a veryfrank and thought-provokingdiscussion on a myriad of subjects such

as corruption, red tapism, womenempowerment, education and internetcensorship. He expressed hispassionate belief in ‘Educate theWomen’ idea for social empowerment.He condemned the paradoxes that existin India, where we have two extremesof everything, that hinders ourdevelopment. He conveyed his sincerebelief that steps were being taken inthe right direction. He emphasized onthe importance of education andvocational training for effectiveutilization of India’s demographicdividend, to eliminate naxalism and puthuman capital to better use.

While addressing issues plaguingKerala such as unemployment,suicides and alcoholism, Dr. Tharoorinsisted that if Kerala does not embracespeedy growth, it would forever beassociated only with beaches andayurvedic massages. He believed the

key remained in implementation,“We (India) are great at idea generationbut poor at implementation”. Asupporter of distributive justice, heencouraged the educated to carefor the less privileged. He alsoadvocated for increased accountabilityand performance orientation forpoliticians.

Answering students’ questions with hisunique brand of humour, Dr. Tharoor,insisted that Indian mentality towardspoliticians should change, and themasses must stop believing that onlythe dynastic elite and anti-socialelements should foray into politics. Hewas confident a change in the politicalscenario is possible only with theinvolvement of the middle class andthe youth. The annual on-campus alumni meet,Nostalgia – an event that brings strongimages, feelings and memories of theAlma Mater to the minds of the alumniwas organized at the ‘Kampus from14th to 15th January 2012. The event

comprised of a host of activitiesranging from Faculty interactions toCorporate dinners to informalinteractions between the alumni. Thetwo day re-union program wasinaugurated by Prof. K. UnnikrishnanNair who enlightened the audiencewith his words and emphasized on therole of a teacher in a student’s life. Hethen presented a token of memento toall alumni. Nostalgia 2012 was aspecial event for PGP 2002 batch as itmarked their 10th re-union with thealma mater.

The esteemed faculty expressed theirgratitude to the alumni for bringinglaurels to the institute and playing animportant role in building its brand.Prof K.K.Ladha also shared hisexperiences and asked the students tothink big in current scenario and nothave a laid back approach by waitingfor incremental change. He urged theaudience to interact and discuss thevarious issues in context and learnfrom the practical know – how gained

A number of issueswere discussed ranging from the needto incorporate an alumnus ID card,Distinguished Alumni Award, openingup of USA Chapter of IIMK AlumniAssociation.

Prof. Joshy Joseph – Chairperson,Alumni Activities, advocated a vote ofthanks towards the alumni gathered atthe occasion and advised the studentcommittee members to take up thesuggestions made by alumni on aserious note and implement them forIIM K to scale new and greater heights.

This was followed by a grand corporatedinner which facilitated networkingand bonhomie among students and thealumni. Late in the night, a surpriseparty was arranged for the alumniwhere everyone re-lived their K-moments by dancing to their hearts.

On Sunday, 15th of January, the alumnihad a freewheeling discussion with thestudents as part of the CareerWorkshop organized by the AlumniCommittee. The students got first-handinformation regarding industryverticals and specializations from thealumni including Mr. Rakesh Bhatia,Managing Director at Real Page India;Mr. Avik Roy - Managing Director atRe-emerging World; Mr. RanjeetPawar, Head, Marketing andCommunications at Experian India,Mr. Abhijit Dinkar Jadhav, AVP, YesBank and Mr. Sandeep Chatterjee,Principal Consultant, Oracle India Pvt.Ltd.

The traditional festival of Lohri wasorganized and celebrated by students,faculty and staff members on 13th Jan,2012 with much pomp and show. Astudent initiative by Asmitaa Kumarand Vikas Rai Arora of PGP 15 alongwith alumnus Mandeep Singh of PGP13, the Lohri rituals were performedwith lighting of bonfire accompaniedwith special Lohri bhangra songswhich saw all dancing and enjoying thecelebrations. Despite being a festivalof North India, campus celebrationsprovided an opportunity for studentsfrom across the country to take a flavorof Lohri and interact. The initiative waswell appraised by one and all whoattended and contributed in building aholistic traditional culture at IIMK.

Religion might be the opium of masses,as Voltaire pointed it out to us, but itsure brings out the best in most of us,so what if the subject in considerationare B-School students.

B-School students are often known toexhibit some of their latent baseinstincts like selfishness, self-servingacts, and relative ranking in theirpursuit to be the best and the brightestin the rat race. Hence, most of theiractions on campus are related to their“CV” building antics where everyaction worth its name is a potential CVpoint.

However, a pleasant surprise awaitedthe students and the faculty of IIMKozhikode on the day of SaraswatiPujan. The essence of spirituality wasin the air. The Bengali students ofIIMK took a suo moto initiative inorganizing a Saraswati Puja for all thefaculty members and the students oncampus.

Considering the fact that about athousand people were invited toparticipate in the puja and the Aartiwhich was rendered by some studentsthemselves, it was a miracle that thingsproceeded smoothly and the entirefunction was enjoyed by all.

Food festivals have always been ameans of uniting communities throughcelebrations of harvests andacknowledging the heavens for aplentiful growing season. In theagrarian country of India, thesecustoms can be traced back to the

earliest civilizations. With the tag ofGod’s own IIM, IIM Kozhikoderecently had its own lip smacking foodcarnival. The students joined handstogether to present a food festivalexploring the diversity of India andtrying to please the palate of quite a

few. The ‘food for thought’ was foughtbetween four camps representingnorth, south, east and west region ofIndia. Among students, NamrataChakravarthy with Kolkata dishes,Umesh Krishna with Kerala cusines,Sneha John with Hyderabadi food andSeema Golekhar with Marathi foodensured that the best of the tastes fromtheir states reached the IIMK students.The camps wrestled for pride andhonour in the culinary domains and yetbacked each other to personify India’s“Unity in Diversity”. The counterswere flocked by the students and manya foodie-faculty. The eateries wereplaced amidst the sprawling lawns, thefood was charged quite nominally andthis event showcased the versatility ofour batch- that students can shine atboth places- the kitchen and theclassroom. The money earned fromthis festival will be utilised to extend ahelping hand to the poor and the needy.

Kozhikode Football League or the KFLas it is popularly called, is the mostpopular sports tournament on campus.This year, the second edition of KFLsaw an increased participation of 84students, over the 48 who took part inthe last years’ edition. Also, during thecourse of this season, some of thematches were played under the newlyinstalled floodlights. After the one ofa kind player-bidding process for theteams, the tournament kicked off onNov 4th where the Brotherhood &more owned team Kodea United theGalacticos 4-0. After 2 rounds ofclosely fought games, Battering Rams(owned by the bong connection) wouldcontest against Seek n Destroy (ownedby High Octane) in the finals, due tohappen in the last week of February.

ITC InterrobangThe ITC Interrobang was a newinitiative from ITC, which wasmodelled along the lines of othercase study competitions. Thiscompetition was conducted onlyamong the top 9 managementschools of the country and IIMKwas invariably in the list.

Interrobang consists of followingsegments:

1. The InterroQuiz daily - A month longQuiz hosted on the Facebook page withquestions posted every day

2. The Interrobang Case Challenge - Acase-study competition for 2nd yearstudents that would give them anopportunity to understand ITC brands.

3. Jam Session with ITC’s marketingleaders - an on-campus event whereITC’s brand pioneers talk aboutbuilding brands from scratch andevaluate the submission from eachcampus.

IIMK celebrated 63rd Republic Daywith ardour and enthusiasm. Theday began with the traditionalflag hoisting by the Director,Prof. Debashis Chatterjee. TheDirector inspired the students with hiswords of wisdom and his witty takeon the present situation in India. Fromthe faculty, Prof. Sanal gave animpromptu speech and asked thestudents to observe the day in themost patriotic way. The student bodyrepresentative – Divya Sreenivasspoke on behalf of the students andpledged to live up to the institute’svisions and serve the country in thetruest sense. The students relished thesnacks that were offered on their wayback to the hostels.

Republic Day

Being an epitome of truly nationalinstitute, the students conducted abarrage of events to celebrate thefestivity. A friendly cricket match wasorganised between the members of thefaculty, FPM participants and PGPparticipants. A large number turned upto support and cheer the teams, thusmaking the initiative a success.Although PGP students won the match,but it was a win too close for comfort– Prof. Rupesh’s histrionics with theball and Prof. Anupam’s droppedcatches were the highlights and werecheered by the spectators. The collegeradio, Kdio played patriotic songs inthe night and thus ended a day ofcelebrations and commemorations.

‘Nte Uppuppakku Orana Undayirunnu’ is one of the mostcelebrated works of the renowned Malayalam writer andhumanist Vaikom Muhammad Basheer. It is keeping inmind the heart-warming bond between a grandparent andhis/her grandchild that a district wide event named afterthis immensely popular book was organized by the SocialService Group, IIM Kozhikode in association with N.E.S.Tof Pain and Palliative Care, Koyilandy.

The competition commenced on 21stof November with thehope of renewing this special bond and increasing socialsensitivity among children and their parents. A three roundessay writing/elocution competition centred on thegrandparent-grandchild relationship across the 3educational districts (Kozhikode, Thamarassery andVadakara) of Kozhikode district. Round one was organizedat the school level with participation open to all students inthe upper primary sections of the 5th, 6th and 7th. Topic forthe essay (English/Malayalam) was “A memorable incident

from the life of my grandparent/s” with registrations forthe event open till 26th November 2011. The winner of theessay competition from each school (restricted to one entryper school) entered round two based on a pre-written essayon “The world through my grandparent’s eyes”. This roundaimed tat rekindling the warmth of long chats thatgrandparents like to have with their grandchildren. Thestudents were then taken on a visit to an old-age home ofN.E.S.T. The grand finale was held on 17thDecemeber 2011.

The success of this event lies in the fact that it touched anumber of parents who realise the widening chasm betweentheir parents and children and the start of beautifulfriendship between the two. SSG will to continue suchsincere effort to achieve its objective of increasedinteraction of kids with elders, developing a sense of caring,belongingness for Grandparents among children anddeveloping them into socially conscious and responsiblecitizens.

Centre for Research and Education for SocialTransformation (CREST) was established by the Govt. ofKerala is driven by a mission to help the marginalized andthe underprivileged gain confidence, build competence andachieve excellence in all spheres of human endeavor, fortheir social, cultural and economic development througheducation.SSG has taken up the responsibility of groomingthe students of CREST by helping them with confidencebuilding, GD/PI training, CV building and helping themwith up-to-date information about the industry andemployment opportunities in companies to which thestudents seek to apply for jobs after graduation. Startingon 8th January 2012, SSG started a series of sessions forthe students of CREST. The first session witnessed eventssuch as mock interviews, extempore competition, teambuilding events, inspiring talks by IIMK students held atthe IIM-K campus. The sessions were followed up byindividual mentoring sessions for each of the CRESTstudents with the help of volunteers from IIMK students.

A mentorship programme has now been started by SSGwhere one IIMK student becomes a friend, mentor andguide to two students at CREST. They interact throughmails, phone calls every 2 days and go for informal visitsonce a month in order to help the CREST students on aregular basis and guide them towards a better and mostimportantly, confident future.

When the lights go out and till the final curtaincall is made, an actor – it is said – lives an entirelife on stage, experiencing a joy or trauma farremoved from his own life. It is truly moving toconvince your audience of the feelings that thecharacter is experiencing and on certain luckyoccasions, stirring a few inside them. At Theatrix– a group of theatre enthusiasts at IIM Kozhikode– we aim to take this powerful medium and speakabout issues that keep bubbling under, yet donot seem to find a voice strong enough. Our lastthree productions — The Importance of BeingEarnest, 30 Days in September, and Kharashein— each shows the world around us in a differentlight — sometimes joyful, sometimes pretentiousand sometimes, plain barbaric.

The Importance of Being Earnest, a classic comedy byOscar Wilde, marked the debut of an all-PGP15 cast onthe campus. The play chronicled the story of Jack – pulledoff brilliantly by Ankur Pandit – who maintained differentidentities in the town and city as a matter of convenience.Echoes ensued as his friend, Algernon, used the samepseudonym ‘Earnest’ to propose to Jack’s ward Cecily.Amid a bout of mistaken identities, sharp banter andcucumber sandwiches, the cast recreated an elegant comedyof errors. Vidya Panicker, as the imperious Lady Bracknell,walked away with the loudest applause with her impeccablemannerisms.

We followed it up with Mahesh Dattani’s 30 Days inSeptember – the play that could leave you benumbed,helpless or transformed. The play introduces us to Mallika,

played by Khushboo Aggarwal, who intensely portrayed agirl confronting her dark past. She feels particularresentment towards her mother, who knowingly orunknowingly, stood silent to her pain. The character,poignantly brought to life by Gargi, hits you hard with hersilence, her resignation to fate and her choosing to beoblivious about the entire incident. A special mention forAshish Tickoo, who played the antagonist with no path toredemption with such brilliance that it sent chills down one’sspine.

What we started with satire, PGP14 wrapped up with apassionate and fervent rendition of Gulzar’s Kharashein.Set against the backdrop of partition, the play addressedthe trauma of the times that still lingers in the collectivemindset of both the nations. Each of the performances – beit Saumya Barik’s Shahini, Sukesh’s Darshan Singh, Anuj’sBhibhuti or Sajal’s Amir – evoked such powerful emotions,stirring every soul present in the auditorium. The dialogues,interspersed with Gulzar’s poetry, will surely echo in theminds of many for a long time to come.

Theatrix started as a vision to promote the culture of theatreon campus, and has been realized to some extent in thepast two years. Celebrating Creativity - we believe that issomething we do best and will keep doing so relentlessly.

SSG organized a project management workshop for NGOson 3rd December 2011 at the IIMK campus. The full-dayworkshop was conducted for 35 NGOs arriving at IIMKfrom all over Kerala by Prof. Saji Gopinath, Professor andDean – Development who has been associated with IIMKozhikode ever since its inception in 1997. Prof. Gopinathis very active in Social Development Projects in the region.The large scale projects conceived by him in the area of

AgriBusiness (SUBICSHA), Handloom (KRITHIKA &THANIMA), Khadi (KUPPADAM), Education (PRISM)etc. are in various stages of implementation with thefinancial assistance of Govt. of India/ Kerala. Of these, theproject SUBICSHA, an innovative rural supply chainproject of developing microenterprises, had bagged thenational award for the best integrated project in NGO sectorconstituted by Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India.

HistoryOn 31st January, 2012, the SocialService Group at Indian Institute ofManagement Kozhikode took greatpride in bringing to Calicut, whichhappens to be the third largest city inthe state of Kerala and the second bestcity to live in India, the first CalicutMini-Marathon 2010, in associationwith Usha School of Athletics andKozhikode District Sports Council.The first ever mini-marathon in Calicutput the city at par with the metroswhere marathons have become anintegral part of their city’s culture. Withthe theme “Be the change”, theinaugural edition of Calicut Mini-Marathon served as a clarion call to theyoung minds of the city to wake up andact and saw over 6000+ participantsrunning shoulder to shoulder.Continuing with this tradition, thesecond edition of Calicut mini-Marathon was conducted on 6thFebruary, 2011 in association withPrasanthi School for Children withSpecial Needs, Calicut. With the theme“Transforming Lives”, the mini-marathon aimed to mobilize the publicto take up the cause of educatingspecially-abled children and creatingawareness and sensitivity about theissue of social inclusiveness ofdifferently-abled children. And thus,the mini-marathon has come to become

an annual event, synonymous withCalicut, IIMK and social welfare.

Park of Kozhikode, promoted by Shri.M.K. Muneer (Minister for SocialWelfare and Panchayat, Govt. ofKerala) and the Kerala Social SecurityMission. With its theme “Empoweringher future”, the third edition of mini-marathon aimed to highlight issues

such as dowry, domestic violence,security, health and economic visibilityfaced by women in our society andpromote empowerment of women.

The Thantedam Calicut mini-Marathon 2012 served as a precursorto the upcoming Thantedam GenderPark, a novel project envisaging acultural centre that will offer womenfrom various strata of society a slewof support systems and services suchas library, juvenile home, health centre,legal assistance etc. all under one roof.The foundation stone for theThantedam Gender Park will be laidat Vellimadukunnu in Kozhikode inMarch, 2012 on the eve ofInternational Women’s day, followedby a week-long national-level genderfestival with the theme “CelebratingWomanhood”. The gender festival willencompass a host of events for womensuch as sports and food festival, healthcamps, self help group supportworkshops, documenting and sharingof stories of women’s struggle andsuccess.

Lead-up EventsIn the run-up to the marathon, IIMKconducted a set of activities at schoolsand colleges in and around Calicut tocreate awareness and provide aplatform for people to discuss women’sissues openly. The first of these events,‘An Open Day @ IIMK’ wassuccessfully organized on 11 Februaryat IIMK Campus. The event witnessedteeming students of Class IX to XIIfrom schools in and around Calicutparticipating in elocution, quiz andposter-making competitions based onthe theme of marathon.

Another lead-up event, ‘The YoungWoman Achiever Award 2012’ aimedto identify and recognize theachievements of girl students acrossundergraduate colleges in Calicut

based on their overall excellence(academic proficiency, extracurricularand contributions to the society). Theevent was conducted in three stages,with the first stage comprising ofonline submission of application formswhich saw 75 online entries fromaspiring woman achievers. The 10 girlstudents, shortlisted on the basis ofobjective evaluation criteria, camedown to IIM Kozhikode campus on

19th February to compete in groupdiscussion, group activity andinterview round. It was a tough job forthe judges of the event who were fullof admiration for the achievements ofthe contestants. Netha Hussain, studentof M.B.B.S. at Govt. Medical College,Kozhikode and Fasna M.P, student ofB.A. at Malabar Christian Collegewent on to win the top honours whilethe Promising Young Woman Awardwent to Archana Karunan of NIT-Calicut and Nimmi K of Veda VyasaInstitute of Technology, Karad. Theevent helped stimulate the girl studentsof Calicut to rise despite theirbackgrounds and hardships, excel intheir chosen fields and ultimately leadthe society.

To further spread awareness about the

mini-marathon, IIMK in associationwith Irshadiya women’s college,Feroke organized a street skit at CalicutBeach on 23rd February to createawareness towards women issuesprevalent in our society. The skit titled‘Out of Coverage’ portrayed themultifarious roles assayed by a womenranging from a politician, a mother, ahomemaker, a doctor, a lawyer and awife in our society. It depicted theplight of women, the challenges shefaces and how she emerges from theshadows of her male chauvinistcounterpart to carve out a niche forherself in her relentless struggle torediscover her potential while servingher responsibilities towards her family.This was followed by a city bike rallyon 24th February which was led bywomen riders from IIMK and itculminated at Focus Mall, Calicutwhere subsequently, a crowd-pullingflash-mob was successfullychoreographed.

Race Day

On 26th February, the mini-marathonproceeding started off early morningat Calicut Beach from 5:30AM withfree registration of almost 6000+participants. The event was attended bydignitaries such as Ms. Revathy(National award-winning actress anddirector), Shri. M.K. Muneer (Ministerfor Social Welfare and Panchayat,Govt. of Kerala), Dr. P.B. Salim IAS(District Collector, Kozhikode), Mr.Jishnu Raghavan (film actor), Ms. JayaM.S. (Director, Social Welfare

Soji Mathew from Indian Railwaysbagged the top honours in the10-km men’s category with 2nd and 3rd

place going to Anil G. Pawar fromErnakulam Navy and Raman Yadavfrom UP respectively. In the 10-kmwomen’s category, Thara M.D. fromPallakad clinched the first place,followed by Shoba V.V. from Pallakadand Danimol Thomas from TSRVimala. In addition, consolation prizes

were awarded to top 4th to 20thpositions in each of the race category,adding up to total prizes worth Rs.2.1lakh. Other awards presented duringthe presentation ceremony included theBest College trophy to NIT Calicut andtrophies to winners of Young WomanAchiever Award.
