Dear Foundation Supporter,

With thoughtful discussion and much enthusiasm, the Board met last August to commit to a spending focus for the school year. We decided to emphasize 21st Century learning, which we felt dovetailed nicely with SJUSD superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews’ challenge to district employees to “inspire and prepare all students to succeed in a global economy.”

During the year, we funded a variety of worthy programs focusing on opportunities that enhance students’ experiences with technology in the classroom. I invite you to read through this annual report to get an overview of these programs. Based on the ‘gung ho’ response from students, teachers, and administrators, I’m very satisfied with our efforts and hope you are too.

This year, we also saw increased city-wide recognition of the Foundation’s work. You may have read in the Willow Glen Resident about the Foundation being honored as the District 6 Non Profit of the Year in recognition of our passion for Willow Glen public schools. Thanks to Councilman Oliverio for nominating the Foundation and thanks also to the many talented volunteers who, over the past twelve years, have built the Foundation from a small group of dedicated parents into a vital and vibrant community partner.

Finally, as my two-year term as President ends, it is my great pleasure to announce the Foundation leaders for the 2012/13 school year: Shari Rodenberger will serve as President ably assisted by Christy Schroeder as Vice President. They are both passionate and capable women who will continue to grow our organization to further enrich Willow Glen Middle and High! Please join me in welcoming them and supporting their efforts.

With deep gratitude for your many contributions,

This Just In!7K Grant from the Intero Foundation.

This May, the Willow Glen Foundation was awarded a $7,000 grant from the Intero Foundation to help fund a summer bridge program at WGM&H. The two week program targeting disadvantaged students is designed to prepare incoming 6th graders at WGM and 9th graders at WGH for success in their new schools.

ALLOCATION HIGHLIGHTS 21st Century Learning

REAL TIME TOOLS TO CHECK STUDENT LEARNING. Qwizdom Student Response System.

The Willow Glen Foundation purchased 4 classroom sets of the Qwizdom Student Response System to give WGH teachers another tool to engage students and instantly evaluate their learning of core material.

During a lesson, each student holds a Qwizdom remote and responds to teacher’s questions. Immediately, the whole class can see what percentage of students answered correctly. The teacher can adjust the lesson accordingly and check in with students individually if they are struggling with the key elements of the lesson.

“Qwizdom is an excellent tool for immediate assessment of student understanding,” reported Ms.Green-Lampkin, a high school chemistry teacher who piloted the tool with her students. “I can know how well my students understand the content as soon as they are done with the assessment. This has changed the way I teach since I can now address misconceptions much faster.”

The new Qwizdom devices are being rolled out into the Math, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, and English departments.

“Students enjoy using the remotes,” Ms. Green-Lampkin continued. “When I use them during a lecture, they have an ongoing contest to see how many questions they can get 100% correct. I have even been asked to keep score across my periods. When I use them for quizzes, I often see them pull out their notebooks immediately after seeing their score so they can figure out what they got wrong.”

Four classroom sets of the Qwizdom Student Response System helps Willow Glen High teachers make sure that every student understands.

“This has changed the way I teach.

Now, I can address misconceptions much faster.”

RICHER CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS.iPads for Teachers.

The Foundation is proud to support 21st Century skills by providing iPads for 26 classroom teachers as well as an innovative software application, called Doceri™, that support teachers as they present lessons and collaborate with students.

From chemistry to choir, teachers are using their iPads to help students visualize concepts, provide context for independent learning, and enrich their lessons with tools and applications only available through the Internet.

“Bringing the informational resources of the larger world to the finger tips of teachers and students has been powerful,” said WGHS Principal, Kaia Hamilton. “It’s truly amazing to see the creative uses the teachers have dreamed up in just one year. As they share presentation tips and apps with each other, it’s thrilling to see that enthusiasm spread. And, of course, the dynamic and rich media adds so much to student learning.”

From anywhere in the room, teachers use these tools to launch and project an application up on the wall such as a satellite image, a virtual frog dissection, or a visualization of a trigonometric equation. A teacher, or their students, can draw and annotate the image and then save the lesson and all the steps for playback in the future. Some teachers are even adding audio and creating virtual lessons, posting them online to help students review for tests.

LOVE OF READING. WGMS Author Events & BooksThat Inspire Children to Read. The Foundation, along with Hicklebee’s Bookstore, continues to sponsor special author assemblies at the middle school, that introduce students to talented and popular youth fiction writers.

In October, acclaimed New York Times-bestselling author/illustrator Brian Selznick spoke to a standing room-only crowd in the ‘Little Theater’. The Foundation purchased 120 tickets so any middle school student interested could attend the evening event free. The Foundation also purchased a numberof copies of Mr. Selznick’s latest book, Wonderstruck, for classroom and library use.

In Mid-May, Tony DiTerlizzi, author of the The Spiderwick Chronicles, spoke to middle school studentsabout his work and passion for young adult fiction.

In addition, the Foundation also bought class setsof “The Hunger Games” book at the request of 8th grade LA teachers because of this series’ powerful appeal to middle school students.

The Willow Glen High School Class of 1953 has once again partnered with the Foundation to raise money from its Alumni for scholarships for Willow Glen High Seniors. This year the Class of '53 offered six $1000 scholarships and two $500 scholarships to conscientious students who have overcome challenges in their lives:

Each year, the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund raises money specifically for Willow Glen High graduating seniors. This year, the Foundation Board proudly voted to supplement the fund. Each scholarship recipient was awarded $1000 in recognition of their academic achievement and financial need:

WGM honors students show off their new shirts during lunch.

SMART & STYLISH. WGM&HS Honors Shirts.

It’s cool to be smart. That’s the message 480 honors WGM students deliver as they sport their ultra hip honors t-shirt around campus and beyond. The shirts were provided by the Foundation in recognition of these students hard work during the first semester.

The 213 students who earned a 4.0 GPA received a t-shirt design with a green theme and the 267 students who earned between 3.5 and 3.9 GPA received a t-shirt design with a red theme. Students are invited to wear their T’s, instead of their uniform shirts, on ‘dress downFridays’. As you walk around downtown Willow Glen, see how many honor students who can spot!

Famed HUGO author, Brian Selznick spoketo students about his new book,
