SaintJoseph’swilllooktoteamcaptainElizabethFox andtherestoftheeight‐memberseniorclassforleadership.Fox,agrittydefender,wasanAtlantic10All‐ConferenceSecondTeamselectioneachofthepasttwoseasonsandhasstartedall32gamessince2010.Sheledtheteamwith30causedturnoverslastseason,whichstandsasthethirdbestmarkinasin‐gle‐seasonforaHawk.

BetweenthepipesforSaintJoseph’swillbejuniorAlishaAquilino,whohaspostedan8.39goalsagainstaverageinlimitedactionasthebackupthepasttwoseasons.FreshmanNoraMcGeever willstartthesea‐sonasthebackupinnet,asshestartedforthreePhiladelphiaCatholicLeagueandDistrict12champi‐onshipteamsatArchbishopCarroll.

SEASON OUTLOOK

DeniseRoessler returnsforher14thyearasheadcoachofthe Saint Joseph'swomen's lacrosse team. In 13 years, Roesslerhas compiled a 71‐128 record highlighted by two Atlantic 10Tournament appearances and her first A‐10 Coach of the Yearawardin2009.

RoesslerledtheHawkstotheschool’smostsuccessfulsea‐son in2009with their first appearance ina championship final,marking the school’s secondA‐10 Tournamentberth after theirfirstappearancein2001.SheledtheHawkstoaprogram‐best5‐2recordintheA‐10,tyingforsecondplaceandpostinganoverallrecordof10‐8.

A1995graduateofOldDominion,wheresheearnedabach‐elor’s of science degree in sportsmedicine, Roessler previouslyservedastheheadwomen'slacrossecoachatLaSalleUniversity.

SheledtheExplorerstoa5‐9overallrecordintheirinauguralseasonofvarsitycompeti‐tionin1998.Roessler came to SJU in the fall of 1998

and spent three years as an assistant fieldhockeycoachinadditiontoherlacrosseheadcoachingduties.PriortotakingoveratLaSalle,Roesslerservedastheheadjuniorvar‐

sityandassistantvarsity fieldhockeycoachatBishopEustacePrep. In1995,sheledEustacetoa10‐0‐2record.Inthespringof1996,shejoinedthestaffatheralmamater,Camden

Oneofthemostfamousmascotsincollegesports,theSaintJoseph'sHawkhasbeenflappingitswingsfor56years.

TheHawk,whichcelebrated itsgoldenanniversary in2005‐06, isbestknown forstayinginconstantmotionbyflappingitswingsthroughouteverybasketballgameandrepresentingtheSaintJoseph'smotto,"TheHawkWillNeverDie."

SaintJoseph’sathleticteamshavebeenrecognizedwiththenickname“Hawks”since1929.Atthattime,theschool’syearbookeditorinitiatedacontestamongthestudentbodyforasymbol.Morethan100submissionswerenarrowed,with“Hawks”winningoutover“Grenadiers”byaslimmargin.Thenamewasappropriatebecauseittypified“thefightingspiritofourcrimsonandgrayathletesanditissuggestiveoftheaerialattackwhichhasmadeourfootballteamfamous.”Football,ironically,wasdiscontinuedatSJUfollowingthe1939season.

TheHawkmascothas garnerednumerousaccolades in its 56‐yearhistory. It hasbeenselectedasthenation’stopmascotbyTheSportingNews,SportsIllustrated,SportsIllustratedforKids,Street&Smith’sBasketballYearbook,ESPNCollegeBasketballmaga‐zineandwasnominatedfortheMascotHallofFamein2008.

She ranks second on the Hawks’ alltime list for goals against average (8.97),

thirdall‐time in saves (462)and fifthall‐time in saveper‐centage(.510)andgroundballs(126).Thethree‐yeargoal‐keeper currently holds the career (24) and single‐season(10)recordsformostwins.

Herlihy was named the 2009 Atlantic 10 DefensivePlayeroftheYearandistheonlyplayerinprogram’shisto‐rytoreceivetheaward.Sheledtheleagueingoalsagainstaverage(8.48)andsavepercentage(.521)thatseason.

Lindsey‐KateMcCool isa2008gradu‐ate of SJUand returns to the Hawk staffforherfourthseasonin2012.

McCoolgraduatedfromSaintJoseph’sastheall‐timeleaderingroundballs(151),

tiedfortheall‐timeleadingamesplayed(63),rankedsec‐ondincareerassists(65)andfifthinall‐timepoints(140).

Additionally, McCool led the team in assists all fouryears onHawkHill andwas vital to the offense from themidfield position. She also provided excellent defense,causing56turnovers,whichranksthirdall‐timeinthepro‐gram’shistory.

McCool completed her master’s in criminal justice in2010atSaintJoseph’sandresidesinMarlton,N.J.withherhusbandTim.

FinneseyField,currentlyinits83rd year, has been home to 10different varsity squads at SaintJoseph’s. Opened in 1929 ashome to the SJU football squad,the field has undergone numer‐ous changes over the years andhas been home to over a thou‐sand SJU varsity games,matchesandtrackmeets.

The most recent upgradeoccurred in 2008 when theAstroTurf,laiddownin2001,wasreplaced with new, state‐of‐the‐artTigerTurf.

Home to the men’s andwomen’s lacrosse teams, men’sand women’s soccer teams, thefieldhasseenothermodificationssince its inception in 1929. Theprospectofa70,000‐seatbowledstadium for football was dashedwhenthesportwasdiscontinuedfollowingthe1939season.

Baseball re‐occupied the space in 1947, calling Finneseyhomeuntil1959.SaintJoseph’smen’ssoccerbeganin1958andplayedeveryseasonbutone(1960)atFinnesey.In1960,theorig‐inal grandstand, as well as the hillside seating near OverbrookAvenue,wereeliminatedasVilliger(nowPost)HallandtheBluettTheatrewerebuilt.Intheprocessofthe1960construction,thefield’selevationwasraisedfivefeettoitscurrentlocation.

In1990,artificialturfreplacedthegrass,makingFinneseyatruemulti‐purposefacility.In1994theinstallationoflightsfur‐theredtheuseof thegrounds,whilenewbleachers in2003onthehillnexttoMandevilleHallwereanothertouchofrenovationtoahistoricstadium.

Thewomen’slacrossesquadis59‐86in19seasonsonHawkHill.Thebestseasoncamein2004whentheHawkswent5‐2enroutetoan8‐6campaign.ThefirstgamewasplayedonMarch23,1993whenSJUdefeatedGwyneddMercy,18‐4.

Themen’slacrosseteamhascompiledanoverall53‐68markin18seasons.

Thelocationhasalsobeenhometomen’ssoccersince1958and women’s soccer since 1996, while the field hockey teamwrappedupitslastseasononFinneseyin2007.

Overall, the site has seen1,161 gamesentering 2012, andSJUteamshaveputtogetheratotalrecordof526‐586‐49in82years.

The 2011 Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team showedgreatimprovementfromitspreviousseasoninwhichitlostsev‐eralstarterstoinjury.Althoughthesquadwasyoung,withjustthreeseniors,itfinishedwithanoverallrecordof5‐11comparedto2‐14in2010.

TheHawksstartedtheseasonwithalosstoDrexelathomebut redeemed themselveswitha12‐5winon the roadagainstWagner.TheHawksjumpedouttoa7‐0leadandtheSeahawksretaliatedwith a run of their own, 4‐0, but SJU outscored theWagner, 5‐1, in the remainder of the contest to take thewin.JulieMineweaserandJenPetersledtheHawkswiththreegoalsapiece. Junior Carly Kindbom had five caused turnovers whilegoalkeeper Kaitlin LaBarbera made nine saves between thepipes.

OnMarch 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con‐ceived. What started as an eight‐school,men's basketball‐only affiliation has growninto a 14‐university, 21‐sport league that isuniversallyhailedasoneof thebestconfer‐encesinthecountry.

Thatgrowthandprominence isadirectresultofthe idealsandcommitmentsofthemember institutionsof theAtlantic10 ‐ theUniversity of Dayton, Duquesne University,FordhamUniversity,TheGeorgeWashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts, University of North Carolinaat Charlotte, University of Rhode Island,University of Richmond, St. BonaventureUniversity, Saint Joseph's University, SaintLouis University, Temple University, andXavierUniversity.

The14member institutionsof theA‐10areunitedandstrengthenedbytheirdiversi‐ty. Each is extraordinary in its educationalmission,whetherofaCatholicfaith,aprivateuniversityoralandgrantinstitution.Thevar‐iedpursuitsofeachmemberprovethattherearemanythreadsthatweavethefabricforagreatconference.

The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, havemade a strong commitmenttomaking the academic and athletics equa‐tion a successful one. Over the years, theleaguemembershiphasstrivedtobetterrec‐ognize theacademicaccomplishmentsof itsstudent‐athletes.TheCommissioner'sHonorRoll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student‐athletewitha3.5gradepointaverageorbet‐ter,recognized1,162student‐athletesintheFall 2008 while 1,164 were named to theSpring2009HonorRoll.

The league sponsors Academic All‐Conference teams in each of its sports andhonorsonestudent‐athleteper sportas theA‐10Student‐AthleteoftheYear.Moreover,the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduatescholarship grants to qualified student‐ath‐letes. In 2000‐09, 182 student‐athletesearnedAcademicAll‐Conferencerecognition,while Charlotte's Lamarra Currie, ChristaDominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure'sKatelyn Murray and David Zenk of George

Washington received postgraduate scholar‐shipgrants.

TheAtlantic10Conferencehad50teamsamong the767Division I sports teamshon‐ored by the NCAA with public recognitionawards for their latest multi‐year AcademicProgress Rate scores. These teams postedmulti‐yearAPRscoresinthetop10percentofallsquadsintheirrespectivesports.Thisrep‐resentsan increaseof16teamsfromayearago and ranked the league fifth among 31DivisionIConferences.In19ofthe21sportssponsored by the Atlantic 10, the league'sAPRwasatorabovetheconferenceaveragenationallyaccordingtothemostrecentdatareleased by the NCAA. Moreover, 75 A‐10teamsattainedaperfectscoreintheNCAA'sGraduationSuccessRateReport.

TheAtlantic10Conference,withatotalpopulationofnearly74millionpeoplewithinits geographic footprint of eight states andtheDistrictofColumbia,will crownchampi‐onsin21sportsthisseason:baseball,men'sandwomen'sbasketball,men'sandwomen'scross country, field hockey, men's golf,women's lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women'srowing,men'sandwomen'ssoccer,softball,men's and women's swimming & diving,men'sandwomen'stennis,andwomen'svol‐leyball.
