2012 PREVIEW
Head Coach Jonathan Meade has reason to be optimistic for 2012. Meade, now in his fourth season, guided the Panthers to a stellar 2011 campaign and hopes for another excellent season are more reality than dream.
ThePanthersfinished2011withanimpressiveoverallrecordof10-6-3,whichincluded a league mark of 8-4-2, and a GLIAC South Division championship. A remarkable feat, when one considers that the team only began playing at the NCAA DivisionIIlevelin2010,andfacedaschedulestackedwithdifficultopponents.
Highlights of last year’s great run included a nine game win streak and advancing tothesemifinalsoftheGLIACTournament,wherethesecond-seededBlackandGoldfaced third-seeded Ashland University. The match came down to penalty kicks and the Eagles came away with the upset 4-3.

Last season, Patterson started 17 games for the Panthers, ranked second ontheteamingoalswithsix,tiedforfirstinassists(six)andgame-winners(three),including an overtime score that lifted the Panthers over Ashland during the regular season. Other key losses are Jill Davis, Slone Fleak and Marie Fudacz.
“I am excited for this team as we had a productive and enthusiastic offseason that has pushed us to be ready for this season,” Meade said. “Add in a solid freshman class and I believe this team has the capability to be very competitive.

Shefinishedtheyearastheeighth-bestgoalscorer,seventh-bestpointgetterandranked sixth in assists in the conference with Panther team highs of seven goals, 20 points and six assists while ranking in the top eight in the conference in all three categories.
Wharton started all 19 games for the Panthers during the 2011 season. She helped support an ODU defense that ranked second in the GLIAC in goals allowed (15), goals againstaverage(0.75)andshutouts(10).Hereffortsonthefieldwererecognizedasshe was honored with an All-GLIAC Second Team selection and to the NCAA Division II All-Midwest Region Third Team.

Forward Megan Augusta (Lyndhurst, Ohio), forward Danielle Scheetz(Coshocton,Ohio),midfielderChristenAdams(Sylvania,Ohio),defenderMegan Hein (Cincinnati, Ohio),) and defender Natasha Hoffmannbeck (Hilliard, Ohio) will all be expected to assist the team to once again battle for league supremacy and a bid for the postseason.

Mazzi appeared in 19 games for the Panthers, scored three goals, three assists and totaled 19 shots as a freshman. Sautter played in 18 games, started eight and tallied one goal, two assists and four points during her freshman campaign.
Clark, whohadbigshoestofillaftertakingoveringoalforAimeeSimonet, didn’tdisappoint. Clark started in 17 of the 19 games for the Black and Gold and amassed an 8-5-2 record, 65 saves, 0.64 goals against average with a .844 save percentage. She was at the top of the GLIAC statistics in most categories for a goalie, as she was second in goals allowed with 12 (0.64%), third in save percentage (.844) and second in shutouts with 9.0 (.50 Sho/G).
More impressively, Clark went 671:44 minutes of consecutive shutout minutes throughout eight contests from Oct. 5-28. The streak moved her into 24th all-time in Division II record book for the longest streak by a goalkeeper.
FreshmenNine newcomers join the Panther ranks for 2012. Meade has indicated that with the depth on hand, this year may be a learning process for some and maybe all. But he also stresses that big things are projected for the Black and Gold youngsters down the road.
“I am excited about our freshman class. They are all high quality people that have excelledintheclassroomandonthefield.Iamlookingforwardtoworkingwiththem over the next four years as I can see this group pushing our program to a new level.”
Looking Ahead –Much will be known about the fortunes of the Panthers in September. Four of the firstsixmatcheswillbeontheroad,andincludeavisittoreigningGLIACNorthDi-visionChampionGrandValleyStateandalwayscompetitiveTiffinUniversity.GrandValley is once again the pre-season favorite. However, one need only look back to last year, and with similar rankings in pace, the scrappy and determined Panthers took the Lakers to the wire, before eventually falling 1-0 but was brimming with confidence, astheBlackandGoldwentontoamassaninegamewinstreak.
Now, as the new season begins to unfold, the hard work in the off-season combined with the steady improvement of the program makes for optimism and expectation. While Meade is cautious about the early challenges, he also realizes there is a real chance for his Panthers to make their mark for what could be a great 2012 season.
“I believe this season will present itself as our greatest challenge to date in Division II,”Meadesaid.“WeopenupthefirstweekendofplaywiththeUniversityofSouth-ern Indiana and Bellarmine, and then open up GLIAC play with four games on the road one of which is against Grand Valley. This is a tough way to begin September, but I believe we have a team that is looking forward to the challenge.”

Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One full-length basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleach-ers were added to the far side of the court.
