the system shall befunctionally tested usingsmoke generating machines orequivalent as a smoke source.An alarm shall be received atthe control unit in not morethan 180 s for vehicle decks,and not more than 300 s forcontainer and general cargoholds, after smoke isintroduced at the most remoteaccumulator.

Highlighted hereare: Approval standards foressential components such ascontrol panels, detectors,manual call points, and cableshave been def ined;clarification of which other fire

safety systems (previouslyonly fire doors) may receiveoutput signals from the firedetection system; acceptablearrangements for powersupply have been def inedincluding required capacity incase back-up power isprovided from batteries;protection of staircases havebeen clarified (detector at toplevel and ev ery second levelbelow); and ac ceptabletemporary disconnection ofdetectors for particular spaces.
